The hack posted here uses the first lines LDY #$08 as the PRs skill index (which was 56 skill) for the CMP BALL_CONTROL_VALUES,Y line.  The QB kept the branch listed about for the skill value.

Its quite possible to hack this using tables for a team's QB and PR ball control value.  Or even to have the PR use their own ball control skill.

@bruddog seems like making punt returners use their own PC might be in your skillset these days

    No

    Your options are

#1 - QB and PR as the same value at 286E7

#2 - PR set to 56 at 286C7, QB value set at 286E7

  3. Ward gets compared to Kyler Murray a lot....multi-sport athlete with questions about their height. Ward was drafted by the Brewers in 93 in addition to football and basketball.

With the 2021 NFL Draft upon us, I wanted to look back at one of the most interesting draft-related stories in the last 30 years. And add a twist.

Former Florida State quarterback Charlie Ward won the Heisman Trophy in 1993 and led the Seminoles to a National Championship in the same season. After throwing for 3,032 yards and 27 touchdowns against just four interceptions and a QB rating of 157.8, Ward shifted his attention to basketball, where he averaged 10.5 points per game.

The ’93-’94 Seminoles basketball team didn’t have much success, as they ended the season seventh in the ACC. But as a result of his defensive tenacity and ability to orchestrate an offense from the point guard position, Ward began generating buzz as a first-round draft pick among NBA scouts. With his collegiate athletic career coming to a close, the two-sport star was clearly more accomplished on the gridiron than on the court. But with Ward honoring his commitment to be there for his basketball brethren in his senior season, his pro football dreams began to wither away.

Before the ‘94 NFL draft, Doug Williams (in ‘78) and Andre Ware (‘90) were the only two Black quarterbacks to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Ward was seemingly on his way to being the third, but, unfortunately, it never happened. Not only did he go unclaimed in Round 1 – Ward wasn’t drafted at all.

    How did this happen?

As the draft neared, Ward was projected to be taken anywhere between rounds three and five in the ’94 NFL draft. It became clear that it made little sense for him to remain dedicated to a sport that would not commit itself to accurately evaluating and appraising his skill set. With the knowledge that he likely wouldn’t be taken where he should have, Ward attended workouts for NFL teams and a medical checkup in Indianapolis whilst sharpening his basketball tools. Ward’s willingness to keep his options open between basketball and football certainly gave some NFL teams pause.

Ward allegedly told NFL teams that he’d choose the NBA if he wasn’t a first-round pick. While this is the story NFL execs of that era tell when asked why Ward wasn’t drafted, others in Ward’s camp have stated otherwise. Regardless of Ward’s intent, the damage was done. Washington took quarterback Heath Shuler with the third pick, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Trent Dilfer with the sixth pick. Meanwhile, Ward’s stock continued to take a beating due to his unwillingness to commit to a game that wouldn’t commit to him fully.

“If he said football was what he’d have wanted to do, he’d have been drafted in the first two rounds,” then Vikings head coach Dennis Green told the AP after Ward went undrafted. The Vikings offered Ward a free agent contract to back up Warren Moon, who was, at the time, being backed up by Gino Torretta and Brad Johnson. Ward instead focused on the NBA Draft.

It wasn’t for lack of talent or “size” concerns that some outlets pointed to in Ward’s not being selected. Even Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Paul Hackett revealed to “Pro Football Weekly” that the Chiefs came close to taking Ward in the draft:

    hackett.jpg

Given Hackett’s description of Ward and his favorable comparison to Joe Montana, one would think the Chiefs would have selected Ward in Round 1 instead of a running back who rushed for 3,218 yards and 12 touchdowns over a six-year career. According to Ward, Round 2 wasn’t at all where the Chiefs were planning on drafting him. In an interview with Dan Patrick in 2013, Ward revealed that the Chiefs reached out to him at a later draft stage.

Despite being the better player, Ward would receive only a fraction of the attention heaped on Shuler during the pre-draft process. Ward didn’t do much to help his cause. When asked in January, before the Orange Bowl, which path he’d take, he replied, “It’s in the Lord’s hands.”

In February, Ward commented at the Davey O’Brien dinner, saying “there are other avenues” to playing in both the NFL and NBA. This heated speculation that he could play in the CFL or even turn to baseball — Ward, the AP pointed out, had recently been drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. “It’s a possibility,” Ward said at the time. “If I decide to play baseball, I’ve already been drafted, so I have a team to go to.”

Ward spent the days before the NFL Draft participating in the Nike Desert Classic, a basketball showcase for college seniors. He told The San Bernardino County Sun that if he didn’t get drafted in the NFL, “I’ve had a great time, and that’s all I ask.” However, the same column featured a quote from Marty Blake, the NBA’s director of scouting at the time.

“He is a very, very good basketball player,” Blake said of Ward’s performance at the Desert Classic. “The problem with Charlie is he’s an NBA prospect, but he has to decide where he’s going to go. Charlie has to take a look at football, too.”

His basketball coach at Florida State, Pat Kennedy, saw things from a different perspective than most, praising Ward for putting himself in position, “to be drafted by both” the NBA and NFL, and “see who wants him the most.”

In May of 1994, weeks after the draft, the AP ran an NFL notes piece with a section titled “Goodbye, Charlie.” In it, the AP bemoaned Ward’s fatal flaw: “telling the truth” — not declaring which sport he preferred. But they did bring up a clever solution to Ward’s conundrum, pointing out that he could play in the NBA for a year and still have a future in professional football, “particularly with Jacksonville and Carolina joining the NFL next year.”

Ward went on to be selected by the New York Knicks with the No.26 pick in the ’94 NBA draft and would sign for over $5 million. Ward made the only logical choice for him and his family, but that hasn’t stopped people like me from wondering what if the Chiefs would’ve selected Ward in Round 1 (or any round, really) as the heir apparent to Joe Montana. Is it possible that the ’94 NFL draft missed an opportunity to launch the career of its second African American Hall of Fame-worthy quarterback? I think so. Here’s how Ward’s NFL career would’ve played out as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. Or, perhaps more importantly to many readers, as a member of your fantasy football team.

Charlie Ward, NFL and fantasy football superstar, 1994-2003

    1994

Given that Joe Montana was still making plays for the Chiefs in his final season in the NFL, Ward would’ve likely spent the entire 1994 campaign holding the clipboard. In 1995, he would’ve been handed the keys to the offense after soaking up knowledge from one of the best quarterbacks ever to play the game.

    1995

1995 would’ve been Ward’s first season as the Chief’s full-time starter, and while they didn’t have many playmaking threats on the flanks, they still had Hall of Fame running back Marcus Allen on the roster. If you know how cerebral Marshall Faulk is and how he helped Peyton Manning become a better quarterback as a rookie in Indianapolis, I believe Marcus Allen would’ve had the same effect on a young Charlie Ward, given Allen’s on-field smarts. Not only would Ward be learning from Allen, but Allen would’ve also seen more open space on the swing and angle routes due to defenders being overly concerned about Ward’s ability to make plays with his legs.

Chiefs quarterback Steve Bono posted 3,121 yards and 21 touchdowns against 10 interceptions in 1995, leading the team to a 13-3 record and an eventual 10-7 divisional-round loss to the Indianapolis Colts. If Ward were the QB in 1995, given his skill set and the weapons at his disposal, his stats would’ve probably looked something like this:

    Charlie Ward, 1995
YEAR TEAM GAMES COMPLETIONS ATTEMPTS % PASS YDS PASS TDS
    1995
    Kansas City Chiefs
    16
    280
    414
    67.6
    3207
    25
    6

As for his rushing yards? 75 attempts for 560 yards (7.4 YPC) and six rushing TDs.

I also have the Chiefs defeating the Colts and eventually falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game, with Ward at the helm. As a result of his impressive numbers and his ability to guide his team to a deep playoff run, Ward is selected to his first Pro Bowl and is joined by Drew Bledsoe, John Elway, and Dan Marino.

    1996

Debates are sparked in fantasy football circles about Ward vs. Brett Favre as the better QB pick. Ward’s rushing prowess is giving him an extra 4-6 points per game, on top of great passing numbers.

In his third season, the Chiefs take a bit of a step back as their lack of talent on the perimeter finally catches up with them. Ward posts similar statistics to those that earned him a trip to the playoffs and the Pro Bowl a year before. Still, their defense’s inability to stop opposing offenses limits his possessions, as well as opportunities to build on last year’s success.

    1997

Recognizing that the team needed to retool in the offseason and give Ward another weapon to throw to, the Chiefs brought in Andre (Bad Moon) Rison, who significantly upgraded the Chief’s passing game. The nine-year veteran hauled in 89 catches for 1,092 yards and seven touchdowns, becoming somewhat of a security blanket for Ward. In this season, the Chiefs go 13-3 for the second time in three seasons and defeat John Elway’s Broncos and then the Pittsburgh Steelers en route to facing the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII.

Despite Desmond Howard’s MVP performance, Ward steals the show, capping off an amazing season with 304 yards and two touchdowns through the air and 12 rushes for 95 yards and a score on the ground to secure a 34-24 victory over the Packers and MVP honors.

    1998

Here at the halfway point in Ward’s career, the Chiefs double down on weapons for Ward and bring in Derrick Alexander and draft a former NCAA basketball player to play tight end for them.  While Ward was equipped with new weapons, the team also adopted a new offensive philosophy, going from a West Coast offense to more of a vertical passing game. As a team, the Chiefs regress somewhat as they finish just 7-9 on the season, but Ward’s production is again among the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. Despite missing the playoffs, Ward puts together another 3,000-yard season with over 20 touchdowns, fewer than 10 interceptions, and at least 500 yards rushing. He is fantasy football gold and sparks debate about how early quarterbacks should be taken in drafts.

    1999-2002

Ward is now becoming frustrated with his team’s inability to get to the playoffs consistently. Still, a couple of players allow him to remain hopeful that the team is in a position to make one final push for a title before he hangs up his cleats. Tony Gonzalez (the basketball player) has since turned into a Pro Bowler, and players like Priest Holmes and Dante Hall can make big plays for their team on any given down. Unfortunately, the talent at this juncture isn’t translating to wins, but with a little more patience and perseverance, another winning season may be just around the corner.

    2003

Ward plays the best season of his career, throwing for 4,106 yards and 27 touchdowns. At 32 years of age, he’s not quite as mobile, but he’s still able to put up 346 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground while leading the Chiefs to a regular-season record of – you guessed it, 13-3.  Ward and the Chiefs outgun and outrun Peyton Manning’s Colts in the divisional round of the playoffs by a score of 38-31, then breeze by Brady and the New England Patriots 24-14 to meet the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Late in Super Bowl XXXVIII, Jake Delhomme launches a 12-yard pass to Ricky Proehl to tie the game at 29. That’s when Ward displays Joe Cool-like traits former Chiefs offensive coordinator Paul Hackett felt he had upon entering the ’94 draft. Ward marches his team down the field and gets kicker Morten Andersen in position to win the game with a 41-yard field goal with just four seconds remaining. Anderson nails the kick with no time left, and Ward and the Chiefs win Super Bowl XXXVIII 32-29. Ward ends his career on top after claiming his second Super Bowl.

    Charlie Ward’s Would-Be NFL Numbers

    • Career Passing Yards 33,950
    •  Touchdowns 268
    • Interceptions 76
    • Rushing Yards 4,725
    • Touchdowns 67
    • Fantasy titles won: Innumerable

    Accolades

    • 2X Super Bowl Champion
    • 2X Super Bowl MVP
    • 9X Pro Bowl
    • 3X All-Pro

Watching Ward in college, I never thought football would lose such a great quarterback to basketball – but it happened. I and so many others have had to imagine what his career would’ve been like had he gotten a true opportunity to play quarterback in the NFL. Sadly, fantasy is all we have left, and while playing out his NFL career in my mind certainly helps, some wounds never heal. Not only did the NFL derail a potential Hall of Fame career, but they also robbed the fans of an opportunity to see a truly unique quarterback in his prime.

Thankfully, Ward had basketball to fall back on, but hopefully, current and future professional sports leagues learn from this cautionary tale and properly evaluates their incoming talent moving forward.

I'm encouraging myself to embrace the detail. Race color, closest player portrait--I'm going for it. That level of granularity is kind of what I'm trying to do with this ROM. I'm using your roster spreadsheets with the O.G. TSB rosters for reference of the original player attributes, while looking up stats on a few different websites, and drafting edits in TSBToolSupreme to build a first draft of the rosters. I also think there are a few interesting graphical tweaks in the older ROMs I made that I may wind up incorporating. Generally, I've been allowing myself to take my time, which has helped to get through it all.

Assume you're already on the way otherwise I can say that mine should be accurate with jersey number.

I've also been tinkering with the small helmet logo all week but can't seem to get a design that feels "right". I wish the logo could shift over to the right one pixel but there's only so much room and pixels to work with.
