  5. Hello Fellow Tecmoers. I hope everyone has been doing well. It was great to see you all at Tomczak Bowl VI in Waterloo, Iowa. Sorry if we missed some of you. I continue to be amazed with how much the Tecmo community grows. With that being said, ideas are always churning through our minds to not only help promote Tecmo Super Bowl and its community, but to specifically better the community by bringing it even closer together. An idea was discussed between myself, Ryan Stewart (Ryan11p) and Derek Ruble (TecmoPsycho) on the way home from Iowa over the weekend that we feel can further the 1991 Nintendo game's reputation and its players from the multimedia standpoint. Can we rally the community together even more as Madison, Wisconsin's Tecmo X approaches? Can we count on you to commit to a fun project that could eventually land itself on a full-fledged, fan-operated, professional Tecmo Super Bowl documentary that me, Derek, Ryan and others from the Tecmo community will put together with our technological resources? WHAT ARE WE ASKING OF YOU? We want you to document your trip to Tecmo X in Madison this coming March. And when I say document, we are asking for you to use a flip cam recorder (or anything that you feel will capture decent quality) and record your trek to Tecmo's Big Dance. An introduction as to who you are, who you are with, and everything in between. We would ask for you to allow us to gather recorded material from your devices at the tournament. We would conduct interviews throughout Tecmo X, grab in-game footage and connect it all together in the making of the documentary. Different segments within the documentary would include (not completely finalized yet): 1.) Introduction of the game itself 2.) The LIVE cult of Tecmo Super Bowl 3.) The ONLINE presence of Tecmo Super Bowl 4.) David Fulcher's persective of the game, as he plans on coming up to Madison with us (Adding other interviews that I could fix up with big name stars) 5.) Collection of personal Tecmo player trips to Madison and how we all come together to celebrate their stories 6.) The Madison tournament itself, the history and 7.) The aftermath of the tournament and its fun (drinking) festivities We understand that this could be a timely process, but if we get groups of travelers to participate, then it would be loads easy to get as much footage as possible. Again, this would be done from a professional mindset in terms of the editing of this feature. We would get consent from all Tecmoers to use their stuff. We thank you for your cooperation in this project, and I hope that we can get you involved one way or another. We look forward to hearing back from you soon. Take care. Tecmo forever. Madden never. 6. Finally finished my weekend recap. Pardon for the delay, wanted to make sure I got this right. Figured this needed it's own I leave Friday around 10am to meet Manyo. He says that he's riding with Dave Murray and Bruddog to Sophie's Bakery to eat, but then says they're closed and they're at Madison Sourdough. Sweet! Kinda stoked at meeting these wizards of Tecmo. I get there a bit hazy, and Dave is wearing this awesome Fett shirt. Introduce myself to these two gentlemen, chat for a while, and me and Manyo are off to the room to play. After a moment of clarity, we sit down and rock out quite a few games, only dropping one to him, but played me tough every one. Pretty soon, Bruddog and Dave show up and me and Bruddog played 2, him whooping me 1st 31-14, with my Cards fumbling to the Jets while he played awesome, just like I figured he would, while I win the next one in a CIN/KC matchup. Louis and Gats, Woodshed, Jimsocks show up. Truly great to meet Gats. Solid dude, and extremely polite. Upset I didn't get a chance to play him, really wish I did. And also Woodshed and Jim, I ended up playing Woodshed twice I think? Winning at least one, and splitting with Louis after winning the first, I call a Seattle/NE where I get some flak for calling garbage haha. My memory becomes cloudy at this point, but I know Diaz, Kevin Cabarello, and Ryan Stewart show up. I introduce myself, instantly knowing who Diaz and Kevin were. Can't miss Diaz with the beard. I'm at a break at this point, and eventually Manyo and I head down to Badger Bowl, where we check in, and meet up with some more Tecmoers. Introduced myself to a lot of people I've gotten to know over the past year and was a truly awesome weekend - Knobbe, Matt and Joey Vogt (met Chris last year) Derek, Mort, Dotdon, Hake, Kweh, Hoigaard, the Tecmo Ninja, as well as Chet and Josh, Daboy... I get a Spotted Cow, and Josh and I play a tune-up game, which was sweet, because I didn't get a chance to play him at Tundra Bowl (damn you, Rico). I play as the Vikings against the Lions, and go to OT where he beats me 20-14. Was a really, really good game! We have a few beers and meet people for a while and eventually head back to the hotel, where more Tecmo was in store. The #315 crew..(kinda neat that its 513 backwards, by the way..) head down sporadically in between their tourney games where I play Chris Vogt and catch up with him. Kamp shows up with Odell and Toolie, and that was an awesome moment, finally seeing him in person after many many chats. Late night pizza was in order while more games are played, and I call it a night after eating, just chilling, talking with everyone. Saturday morning rolls around, and meet up with some more people - Sega, Moulds, Luke Carlberg, Gamehigh, Kyle and Matt Miller, Rico, Troy Hansen, and others, after the opening ceremonies, I find out I got the 1 seed in my group. Wasn't expecting that, but I'll take it. First group play game my opponent Tommy calls CLE-GB, I roll with the Browns. QB Browns and Mack go into Good in the 2nd and stay there all game, I won 42-3. 2nd game I win the toss and call NO/ATL, a matchup Manyo and I played the previous day. I got the Saints, and shut down Jock's Falcons 21-0. I draw Adversity in the final, an opponent I am very familiar with. He calls MIN-MIA. Oof, 2 teams i really like. I said I'll defer. I ended up getting Miami, and after trading scores and him up 14-7 2nd quarter, a Marino INT leads to a 21-7 lead. I get ball and play great D to force OT, where I get the ball and Scott Mitchell of all people leads MIA to a comeback win. At this point, I'm just nuts, because I have achieved what I set out to do - make the 64 man bracket. My first opponent is Ed Grams, or Edisaurusrex if you prefer. He calls a CHI-PHI matchup, where I watched Manyo defeat a guy in group with the Bears, so I figured why not? I roll with the Bears 28-3, Ed was a super nice guy too, and Orenga's posse was right next to both of us, which was loud. My next matchup is against the legendary Bruddog. Ouch. I also find out that this game will be on the stream too. Talk about pressure. He calls a MIN-WAS matchup, and I take the Vikings. We played a back and forth game, where I got a few breaks, such as an early fumble recovery for a TD, and him overthrowing WRs in the end zone. At one point I'm up 17-7..think 4th quarter. Brud scores and immediately I launch a bomb to AC for a TD. He scores again, but takes time off, and I get the onside and run it out. Was a truly excellent game! Now, onto the sweet 16, where I find out I have to play Orenga. Manyo watched this one, due to Tony knocking him out 2 rounds earlier...told me don't give him the Rams..I call the same matchup I just won with, MIN-WAS, and again get behind the Vikes. Orenga drops a monster JJ right away. I hit one myself, while he hits another before half time. Gannon comes in, and throws 2 picks in the 2nd half, but the Viking D steps up, only allowing 7 more points, while Gannon and Herschel lead the Vikings to a tie. In OT, I get the ball, and drive down behind Herschel, and score. At this point I'm beside myself, making the Elite 8! Never did I think I'd make it this far with a field this talented. To Tony and the posse, that was truly an amazing experience playing that day, one I'll never forget. I play skunker in the Elite 8 in a PIT-DAL matchup, and lose 17-10 in another really good game! Babe to Nova, triple covered is all I'll say. Really, James played great, kept me off balanced on my play calling, and picked off Strom once, that was the play that won him the game. It was really great to meet him, especially him coming from Neenah/Madison. Onto my next game against Matt Vogt - elimination game. I've never beaten him in our 3 or 4 times we've played, but I felt I had a call that would work. Too bad he wins the toss and calls DEN/TB. I take TB and lose in a nailbiter 24-21. Wished Matt good luck, and finally was able to relax and have a beer and watch the final games. I meet some more people, such as Bontempo. We managed some pictures of HSTL, all the online guys(except Regulator, one of my 2 regrets this weekend, tried to get everyone). afterwards, I got on the live stream, Which was another great experience! Manyo gave me a lot of inspiration for this tourney, whether he knows it or not. Thanks bro! Mort comes and gets me and Manyo, and we go to the Plaza and the Plaza crew is there. Had a few drinks, and had a blast hanging out with everyone while not around Tecmo! We had that weird situation where Blue Luigi appeared, Louis was all over like 6 women...classic! Louis, I am definitely hanging out with you at the bars more often! And Diaz was giving me a hard time by not talking to the two women by us. We hit Perkins afterwards and Manyo has to duck out early, due to his taxi situation. Sunday Odell and Toolie wake Kamp up and we sit and chat for a bit, and we all respectively go our own ways back to our jobs/families. I say goodbye to Diaz, Ryan, and Kevin while doing the Ric Flair styling and profiling strut. I get in my car and drive home. I get to about Beaver Dam (about halfway home), and it sinks in...did I really play THAT well yesterday? Once again, thanks to everyone I met, talked to, shared a beer or "moment" with, and especially thanks to Chet and Josh, the entire Madison crew, for the spectacular time!! Was a weekend I'll never forget! #134
  7. Thursday: Didn't sleep much the night before because I always have to spend hours cleaning my place before going on a long trip. It's weird. Struck a convo with the guy next to me on the plane for a bit who looked strangely similar to dave murray sans beard. I told him where I was going and what I was doing and told me he had heard of the tourney on Deadspin and told me he used to play in a madden league at his local bar. Got into Madison at around 4:30. My bag already waiting for me off to the side. That was a FIRST for me. Tried the spotted cow and talked to a few locals as I mentioned in another post. They were amazed to hear of a tecmo super bowl tourney. We talked some NFL and about the local breweries around. I thought the spotted cow was just OK and grabbed a 7 & 7. Feeling pretty tried at that point and knowing that murray nor anyone else was do in for hours I went to the super 8 and crashed out for 3 hrs. Woke up and Murray was still en route and watched the Spurs beat the Heat. Finally Dave arrives pretty late and is as good/cool of a dude in person as I expected. As he mentioned his wife forgot to pack his pants so he was walking around in shorts. But hey I saw a few girls walking around in skirts so if they could do it...um but no 5 degrees is REALLY COLD when you are used to 60 at night. LOL. The first place we stopped at had no food so we both got a few IPA's. At one point I see my terrible Lakers had gone from up 10 to down 40. Oof. After finishing my beer I tried the vanilla porter which was excellent and then we went in search of the place the bartender had recommended. As Dave mentioned we found the Natt Spiel and found a VERY close parking spot. We were seated by the dJ who was spinning some old school rap and some techno stuff if i remember right. It did look kind of like a date place. The pork sandwich did hit the spot. Had to take a piss at one point there was this odd picture hanging in the bathroom. Kinda made me a little uneasy. LOL We headed back to the Super 8 as Manyo had been messaging us about some games. Dave wasn't feeling well and he headed off to bed. Headed down to Manyo's room with my Bose and a nice big bottle of hop therapy IPA from Cali. Manyo had a couple pages of tecmo numbers(rosters) as well his little black book or in this case green book of tecmo. He had some Dre playing already so no need for the Bose. He had the blue luigi sweatshirt on then as well I believe and I was rocking my P.Willis 49ers t-shirt. We got 3 games in and I think I won one handily and he won the next one. And I won the rubber match I believe. Feeling tired it was time for a nice beer induced sleep Friday: After a nice beer induced sleep I was tasked with find a breakfast spot for the day. Being a fan or a good breakfast on vacation I thought with the help of YELP I had found a good spot. After grabbing Manyo, we rolled downtown to where this place was. It was closed. What I didn't mention at the time to Dave and Manyo was that I had read it was only open weekends. But my brain not realizing it was Friday and thus not the weekend... screwed that one up. We found another spot. Manyo was all but done with his breakfast before we got ours me and my heaping pile of sugar...chocholate mocha and french toast with whip cream and strawberry. Coco showed up and Manyo headed off with him as he was done and we were still eating. We head back to Super 8 and room 134 and I think I got a contact high upon walking into the room where Coco and Manyo were there with the nintendo on. No worries its all good guys. I got 3 more games in and went 2-1. I think I won 2 handily and then Coco beat me soundly in a CIN vs KC matchup where the tapping was a big problem as CIN. Coco was another guy I had to add to the list of guys I likely wasn't going to win a tap against using the nes controllers. Matt and his buddy Joel show up and it's off to Carbon 4 for some beer. Got a flight of 5 beers. The fantasy factory IPA and coffee stout were my favorties. I did not like the dark IPA at all ad gave it to Dave. Good times shooting the shit about beer and various things. Dave gets a text from Chet about heading to Badger Bowl to help set up so we finish up our beers and all decided to head over there. Making a last stop at Super 8 we ran into a couple tecmoers who had made the trek to Madison. I forget their names but good guys. Walk into Badger Bowl and behold the Madison X crew setting up shop for tomorrow and witness TV upon TV with COM tecmo games playing on most of the screens ... to be continued.
  8. Knobbe, I'm sorry if this post needs to be edited to be appropriate for Tecmobowl.org. But this is what live Tecmo looks like to me. Let me know if ESPN.com calls. "In that moment, at a live tournament, when you've just achieved Tecmo immortality. And there's a hundred people over your shoulder screaming, and cheering you on. You're like a God. At home, while online, in that exact same moment. Your wife is usually just pissed, and rolling her eyes." I'm going to make this recap very personal and very real, and very long. I will try to keep it interesting. What happened at TecmoX will be impossible to re-create for many reasons. Many first time competitors we may never see again, and if we do, it's unlikely we'll see them all at the same time. When will we again get Bruddog, Gats, Kamp, Manyo, and so many others all together at the same time? Looking at that awesome picture will live forever in infamy one clear regret does come to mind. Where the fuck is our champion? All I can assume is that the Tecmo mystique had something to do with this. Perhaps, in avoiding this pic, he avoided the Gods attempt to reap his Tecmo soul. Or maybe he was just falling out of a chair, splashing water on his face, or getting some last minute advice from Mr. Tecmosuperbowl. Whatever the reason. I'm sad Kyle is missing. He is clearly, playing Tecmo in a different picture from the rest of us. OK - So travel. Friday 3/7/14 I leave for Columbus to meet Ryan11p, Tecmo Ninja, and Kevin C at 8am. For Kevin and I this is our 2nd Madison. Ryan and Ninja's first. Mrs. Ninja had a schedule hiccup so Mr. Ninja was over an hour late. Very un-ninja like. But I appreciated the early material for later abuse during our adventure. Kevin C. and I snuck in a couple matchups and I was able to test out Miami/Raiders. This proved very valuable as I ultimately used this matchup to limp my way into the Sweet 16. Thanks Kevin! We took turns driving Ryan11p's Dodge Nitro while he and Tecmo Ninja argued Tecmosis like an old married couple. We recorded some interviews and continued to talk shop. Arrival at Super 8. I'm mostly excited to meet my online brothafromanothamotha Kamphuna. However, he's getting in late but his roomie Manyo was already posted up in #134 with Gats, Coconuts, Jim Socks, Woodshed, Lou, Mort and several others. Meeting Joey Gats was so freaking cool. He was very quiet, gracious, and extremely polite. We hang for a minute then go to our room #309. Just a couple doors down from the Vogts at #315. We head to Badger Bowl with Gats for early check-in, drinks, games, and bull-shitting. The place looked great just like last year. The people at Badger Bowl are always so cool and accommodating. When I checked in I accidentally tried to check-in under the name Diaz, instead of Swayze. Atmosphere was loose and everyone was having fun meeting each other. I saw Trevor O. from my group last year. We had some laughs about me working him last year and so we played some more. He joked about how bad I own him, which I do. But he made a great run in the tourney. Good player, great guy. Gats played Chet tough. He looked poised for a big following day. I don't remember much else. We head back to Super 8 to get ready to prep. Kamp had text me so I knocked on #134, Kamp answered, and we immediately hugged. It was totally homo. NTTAWWT. Most of the OGP (Online Garbage Players) were having a little trouble with timing kickoffs and FG's. Many kicks were not reaching the endzone and most FG's were sailing North. Good thing OGP's always go for it on 4th down. Hashtag 134. I'm not smart enough to churn out the numbers but the "feelsies" of it is that if you were OGP, Super 8, Midwest, and/or named Matt you were poised for a monster tournament day. I went 8-1 in practice games on Friday night, finally falling to Kamphuna. It was cool to bullshit with everybody but we didn't do our real bonding until business was over the next day. On tournament day I felt okay. A little tired but I scraped together 4 hours of sleep which was plenty. We show up at Badger Bowl and the mood was very different. We were tired but there were definite nerves in the air. The Madison Crew did an amazing job of handling the crowd and making everyone feel welcome. We went over some rules and watched some LT footage. Gotta admit, I was pretty pumped up after watching all the crack-induced LT tackles. At this moment I realized I was the #1 seed in my group 13 and would be playing first. I played Bob Gee (I think) and routed him 42-0 TB over Jets. The #2 in my group James fell early so I was salivating at the idea of getting some great point differential and a nice big bracket seed. But in my second game I called Miami Detroit and won with the Lions only 27-14. In the championship group play game Justin called SD/Rams. I take the RAMS. Everett throws 3 INT's and misses on 3 pretty easy TD passes. This whole game made no sense and this matchup will be expertly practiced before my next tourney. We both chatted later and both knew he shouldn't have beaten me. But he totally beat me and I was legitimately happy for him. I lost 14-24 and have lost in Madison to only people named Justin. I move over to the loser's bracket and Gil calls... SD/Rams. SAME EXACT MATCHUP. I was impressed by the strategy. He claimed to not realize. But wow! Anyway, I took the Rams again. And again I struggled. Luckily, I'm obnoxious on D and I win the game 14-0 to advance and earn myself a 12 seed in the big bracket. I play #5 seed Matt B. (Heechy) in the round of 64. We played at Ohio V group play where I won but I picked the matchup. Here he picks PHX/PIT and we grind it out. This game was stupid. I felt outplayed the whole time but the Steeler D kept bailing me out. I absolutely claw my way to a 3-0 nothing win, and back to back shutouts. I had 77 yards of total pathetic offense. If I remember right my FG was after a fumble and his FG attempt was missed. Me, an OGP makes a FG!!! Looking back on Ohio V that group had Me, Lefty, Rico, and Heechy. No wonder my tournament record leave's much to be desired. Wait... who's Lefty? Round of 32. Guess who? It's Rico. I really like Rico. He's fun to bullshit with but you also know he's there for business. I called Miami/Raiders after testing it with Kevin while waiting for Ninja to ever show up. He complimented the matchup pick. At this stage in the game you can't really believe anything that is said or happens. But he said he's not great with either team and would like to defer. He moves to take P1 then also says he'll take the Raiders. I said that's cool and reminded him that I'd be taking P1, since he didn't really defer. I respected the attempt to take what he could get. But I think he forgot it wasn't group play anymore. Rico takes P2 and Bo Jackson and runs for over 350 yards on me. He played really well and was dominant on offense. I got a gift turnover early which put me ahead and we went back and forth. I score late in the 4th to go up. But with about 90 seconds left Bo breaks free and he's brought down inside the Miami 20. If it were a season game I'm certain he would've broken his hip. Rico's run/pass ratio was 9:1 in this game. I think he took 3 cracks at it and I picked run, run, pass. I believe I contained the first run, picked the second run, then picked pass and played centerfield. I was ready to out tap Bo and was really scared Bo was about to walk in the endzone. Rico also picked pass and was able to cover well enough to break rhythm and bring him down on a scramble to advance 24-17. I sneak by in another and advance to the Sweet 16. Good thing I'm OGP so I knew to pick pass after defending on 27 run plays. I've been outgained in both games. Three Matt's represented the Dom in the Sweet 16. Toolie and Vogt went head to head and I got Chet because of my group play loss to Justin (thanks Justin!). Well, that loss and Chet's win of the wimpy coin toss sealed my fate. He picked Rams/Cincy and I chose Cincy because of my previous struggles with the Rams that day. He skips the kickoff screen (completely legal) and is kicking off to me immediately. From the get go I know I can't move the ball and wished I had L-O-ellard to "Back and B" to. I punt, Rams fumble. Here's where the punt coverage picks up the punt and runs it in for a touchdown, right? Wrong. The lazy Cincy drones and the Rams just kick at it for awhile until it rolls out of bounds. The Chet magic is there and for me to beat him in this matchup, I really would need two, probably three big breaks. They didn't come. Chet very skillfully cut me up while I was primarily Fulcher on D. I showed resistance, but he was methodical and would cut when given the opening. On his other sequences I would occasionally mix in Francis. When the opportunity was there Chet would give Ellard a deep look and it was successful. He added two extra JJ touchdowns perfectly timed. A couple times I had him backed up and he timed Shotgun to Flipper for diving CC's each time. He swiftly knocked me down 21-10. Chet is the total package and it's no surprise he's had so much success. He can tap (almost) like Reg, has the patience of Toolie, the knowledge of Mort, and Orenga-esque timing. Playing him fucking sucks! I'm twice his size and could snap him in half, but I was the one intimidated. It was still very fun! And at least I can say I lost to Chet. At this point I disappeared for awhile and thought about what could've been if I could've selected the matchup. I thought about if I hadn't lost in group play, or if I'd had a better seed, or if I was in a different region. Then I realized I just tied for 9th out of 256 people. So, I called my wife to share the awesome news! And I spent the rest of the time getting pictures and swapping all the dream crushing stories with my Tecmo brethren. Soon, I look up at the big screen for the finals and see that Kyle is at P1 which means he picked the matchup. After a lucky garbage win over Chet's Dolphin matchup he was ready for his first Madison victory. I see Den/SD up on the screen and a sober Regulator. Even with Chet's skill and everything that makes him great this matchup can't work for him. Not against Reg. Ironically, Den/SD seemed to be the matchup of the day. It was surprising to see it still available for Kyle just like Chi/KC was available for Chet against BigMV. Looks like they were all saving them for each other. That's why they're the best. Josh was hilarious at closing ceremony and made mention of a well deserved win for Kyle. It was awesome and Chet was visibly very happy for Kyle. Which is what makes our community so fucking cool and the best there is, period. But then there's the Player's Party... But for me, that doesn't happen for about another two hours. Somewhere along the line Tecmo Ninja picked up a stray, Hankdewild. Hankers was pretty much in the bag... No wait, back that up. Hank was drunktarded and we needed to get him back to his friends house. No way he could drive. So Ninja drives me, Kevin, Ryan, and HanktheTank out near the Oscar Meyer Wiener Factory. I mean, after a day of homophobic innuendo... where the fuck else would we be? The Wiener Factory, I'm crying. We get to Hank's friends house and he's not home. Information, that would've been helpful a half hour previously. Hank apologies, slurs his words and appeared even more drunktarded. I'm frustrated because I want to get to the Player's Party, not watch Hank slip around on some icy driveway by the wiener factory. We take hank to Super 8 where he'll hopefully be picked up quickly. Ninja and Ryan stay back to rest and babysit. Ryan graciously trusts Kevin and I to take his Nitro out on the town. We were of course very cautious of this kind gesture and didn't do anything stupid. Kevin and I leave. The Plaza. Madison Crew: Thanks so much for hosting. You guys are awesome and I hope more than anything I'm back in Wisconsin in March of 2015. #CliftonHanger OGP: You guys are the best you bunch of online garbage pieces of ... well, trash. You have no skill and you're all a bunch assholes. You know who you are. LATE NIGHT PLAZA. The Men have now been separated from the boys. All the men, have responsibly either started traveling home to their families. Or are resting somewhere getting ready for their long journey home tomorrow. Then there are the boys... Me, Kevin C., Manyo, Coconuts, Moulds, Mort, Louis, Knobbe, Bru, Nate B., O'Dell, Toolie, and of course Dave. I'm sorry if I forget someone. #shots All I remember is Manyo and Coco talking shit about approaching some girls. It was awesome! I felt like I was in high school again knowing that they were full of shit and it would never happen. It never happened. HOWEVER, a pretty pretty-girl does walk up to Manyo. It was late. Louis was passed out on the table and we had formed a semi-circle to block his view from the bar. So we wouldn't get kicked out. Louis was pretty hanked out of his mind. We were strategizing how to get Louis back to the Super 8 when this girl tells Manyo that he looks exactly like Blue Luigi. Random gamer reference from stranger #1. I'm fucking crying. We're all fucking crying. Then she looks at his 8-bit Seahawk helmet jersey and says: "What the fuck? Who are you? Why are you a Blue Luigi AND you have a pixilated helmet on your shirt?"(Or something like that.) BAM! Random gamer reference from stranger #2. At this point I intervene and ask her who she is. And how she knows what Blue Luigi and pixilated is? Chicks don't talk like that. Turns out her boyfriend owns an arcade in town. Instantly he appears! Of course, because his GF is talking to a creepy Blue Luigi. It's late AF. Her BF was super cool and was also very Ken Doll-esque. Especially for 2am, or 3am, or whatever was happening. His hair was perfect. It was very Raguse. We talked Tecmo and shared some laughs and I did a good job distracting him while Manyo continued hitting on his girlfriend. Thanks Manyo for wrapping that up so quickly. That wasn't weird at all! Dick. CONSIDERING THAT: 1. THE BOYFRIEND OWNED AN ARCADE 2. WE JUST PLAYED AN 8-BIT VIDEO GAME TOURNAMENT 3. EVERYONE WAS HAMMERED 4. AND MANYO LOOKED LIKE A BLUE LUIGI I WAS CONVINCED WE WERE ABOUT TO FIND OURSELVES IN SOME CRAZY VIDEO GAME CUCKOLD ROLE PLAY INVITE THAT WOULD INVOLVE SOME SORT OF S&M BOWSER, DECKED OUT IN ALL LEATHER. IF VING RHAMES AND LAWRENCE TAYLOR WOULD'VE WALKED IN WE WOULD'VE BEEN GONE. So we left. Kevin and I started to go get the car so we could carry Louis a short distance instead of two blocks. We walk outside and Mort is just waiting like some kind of God. There was a beam of light from the heavens just showering down on his beautiful face. It was amazing. Louis, who hadn't moved in about two hours somehow Jeditexted Mort to pick him up. I don't think it happened. I think that's what Mort told me so I wouldn't figure out that he's actually Jesus Christ. At Tecmo Madison, even Jesus Christ gets knocked out in the round of 64, once in awhile. Mort comes in, I keep my distance from 8-Bit Bukkake, Blue Luigi, and the Cuckolds. Mort yells at Louis which was hilarious. Following, I did imitations of it all night at Perkins. We say our goodbyes and bounce ... Me, Kevin, Coco, and Blue Fucking Luigi. We try to hit Taco Bell but the evil Madison medians keep me from finding an appropriate left. We decide on Perkins along with 150 other people at 3am. We order, nothing happens, I'm still waiting for my fucking food. This was a common theme even at Badger Bowl. I digress. Blue Luigi nearly misses his cab which is going to drive him so he can nearly miss his flight. I'm not sure how a guy who looks like an 8-bit terrorist can even get thru TSA in under 6 hours. AND THAT'S COMING FROM ME!!! We finally leave Perkins and I make mention that if hankthetank is in my bed when we get back to Super 8 that I'll be going to prison for a very long time. Or delivering him to the Bukkake Arcade back near The Plaza. I cling on to a couple hours of sleep and we drive back with Ninja and Ryan. They slept a lot that night during the shenanigans so Ryan was solid and he drove the whole way home. That's my boy!! Ryan and Tecmo Ninja argued Tecmosis like an old married couple almost the whole way back, again. It was very similar to playing Chet. I learned some stuff but mostly was just miserable and wanted it to be over. This community fucking rules. We're friendly, hospitable, charitable, ball-busting, loving, hating, whatever. It's very close to a family. We are dysfunctional and we care about each other we haven't seen in years. Or possibly even met. These people I consider my good friends. Many, I'll be friends with for a very long time. Unless I have to ride in the car with them. Then fuck those guys. =) Seriously, if you are my Tecmo brethren and especially if we shared time at TecmoX. I think you're the tits and thanks for making Tecmo so awesome in all your individual ways. If we missed each other please find me next year. Gats, welcome to the Force. You've now seen the light. Moulds, Kamp, Diaz, Coconuts, Psycho, Manyo, Dotdon, Leonardite's head. TL; DR: Live tournaments and the Tecmo Brotherhood is the shit.
  9. I’ve always been infatuated with statistics/demographics, etc and this tourney is no different. I wanted to post some stuff about the tourney but didn’t want to clog up the main Madison thread, so I thought I’d start this one as a sort of repository for any posts/discussions about “Madison, By the Numbers.” Things like team usage, player stats, locations, many of the things that Josh tweets from Madison Tecmo Twitter acct, etc. If you find any stats/numbers you think are interested, add them to the thread. To get us started, I’m going to re-post a couple things that I posted last year: To preemptively talk myself off the ledge after a disastrous showing on Saturday (especially after the first two “major” previews *Flo & CVogt* predicted me to advance), here are some numbers to put in perspective the difficulty of leaving this tourney in good standing: 25% of the field will go 0-2. 25% of the field will go 1-2. 12.5 to 25% of the field will go 2-2. Half of the field will leave with a losing record, and only 25 to 37.5% of all entrants will depart with any semblance of a "winning" (above .500) record. Next, I wanted to see what the general rate of team selection has been in the Madison Tourney, as well as team winning percentages. Tony O started designing a page for that but I don’t believe it’s quite ready, so I did some pen/paper/Excel work. Here's what I got: Data collection information- The current method of team selection started in Tecmo VI, so for this study, I only looked at Tecmo VI, VII, and VIII (*Note, this study was done prior to Tecmo IX, and I haven’t updated. I think the general theme/trends would hold, even if I did). I chose not to look at tournaments from other cities because I wanted to limit this strictly to Madison (you can be certain to a strong degree that most of these numbers would hold across multiple tourneys). From my shitty math, there were 796 games played in Tecmo VI, VII, and VIII. To get a reasonable sample size w/ 90% accuracy, I needed about 200 data points (roughly 25%). I chose, at random, various guys' results from those tourneys (making sure not to duplicate. Made-up example: Say Joe Blow beats Jim Balls in Tecmo VII. I would not count that same result if I was tallying Jim Balls results). Things this study did not factor in- Strength of player, Who called the matchup, Early-round games vs late-tourney games (many instances teams weren't listed in the results, so I couldn't use them), Controller 1/2, etc. This was strictly "What were the two teams selected, and who won that particular game?" Results (let me repeat: This was FAR from an exact science. It's possible a number or team was screwed up here or there, but all in all, it gives you the general idea of what we're looking for)- Total # of Uses: Total Uses (Usage %)... SD 24 (11.62%) Min 23 (11.14%) Cin 22 (10.66%) Den 22 (10.66%) Dal 22 (10.66%) Wash 21 (10.16%) Det 20 (9.68%) Rams 20 (9.68%) Jets 18 (8.72%) Phx 18 (8.72%) Atl 17 (8.24%) Mia 16 (7.74%) TB 16 (7.74%) Cle 15 (7.26%) KC 14 (6.78%) Chi 14 (6.78%) NO 14 (6.78%) Pit 12 (5.82%) GB 12 (5.82%) Buf 11 (5.32%) NYG 10 (4.84%) Phi 10 (4.84%) NE 9 (4.36%) Oak 8 (3.88%) Sea 8 (3.88%) SF 7 (3.38%) Ind 5 (2.42%) Hou 5 (2.42%) Winning % of Teams: Wins (Win %) SF 6 (.857) TB 13 (813) Phi 8 (.800) Pit 8 (.667) Buf 7 (.636) Rams 12 (.600) Hou 3 (.600) Cin 13 (.591) SD 14 (.583) GB 7 (.583) NO 8 (.571) Min 13 (.565) NE 5 (.556) Cle 8 (.533) Wash 11 (.524) Phx 9 (.500) KC 7 (.500) Chi 7 (.500) Dal 10 (.455) Det 8 (.400) Ind 2 (.400) Mia 6 (.375) NYG 3 (.300) Atl 5 (.294) Sea 2 (.250) Den 5 (.227) Jets 4 (.222) Oak 1 (.125)
  10. Ok. I had a long conversation with Joe and we will give this a try. Here is the background. About five or six years ago my own issues with depression nearly got me to kill myself. I nearly threw myself off a large incline in a fit of rage with the people i had gone to for help. I have many issues with ECMC hospital besides that incident. The point was I was antisocial to a T back before I went to my first tourney. The process of breaking myself out of that and suicidal depression wasn't easy. Tecmo helped a lot and playing live helped a lot. Joe is the same age I was and has many of the same problems. Which is why I am convinced. You read his post about how he understands things are wrong. Yet at the same time he has been burnt by people trying to be his friend. A stolen car and stolen money most likely are the tip of the iceberg. He also understands that winning Madison won't change his life. Making better friends of all of us will. Which is why I am asking for people to donate 20 dollars apiece to support his journey and entry to Madison. Your entry buys a bus fair to Cleveland round trip. He will then carpool with my brother in my car to keep costs down. He will split a room with Louis, myself and El Tecmo. Of course he asks that in the time before the tourney he be allowed to play as many games as possible. We will also need to buy a nes controller and a nes adapater so he can practice with tpc games as he gets ready. 40 dollars for entry fee. Also some grub money. all this will run around 450 dollars. Anything more I will pay or he will. In the meantime I have given him some new job goals and life goals to get him out of the low wage trap he has been in. Hoepfully with our encouragement and a bit of luck he can make something good of himself. Anyways if you want to send a 20 dollar share. or more. Please send it via paypal to [email protected] The payback we agreed to was that in the event of 1st place he would pay back all of the sponsor ship money. In any other position we will allow him to keep the winnings to help him out with various life needs he may have. Thank you for your consederation Francis Buennagel PS. This is a serious effort. I expect there to be not one post in a non serious manner. donations recievied xxxxx $50 xxxxx $50 xxxxx $40 xxxxx $20 xxxxx$50 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxxx $40 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxx $20 xxxx $30 total 510 of 510 nes controller 8.95 usb nes adapater 13.75 madison entry fee 40 money order $41 shipping fee $5.8 shirt $5 bus ticket 30.5 money order 61 total 206
  11. Mark Clayton Region Projected Group Winners Group A - Chet H. (holzy11) Group B - Sobhi Y. (bestinworld) Group C - Matt M. (Ones11fahzu) Group D - Joseph N. (nomad) Group E - Eric O. (tecmodell42) Group F - Erik M. (ARNCOEM) Group G- Travis R. (Moulds33) Elite 8 Favorites Chet H. (holzy11) Matt M. (Ones11fahzu) Darkhorses Todd D. (imimmortl) Jonathan B. (QB_Browns) Best Names Erik B. (Butt Douglas) James K. (Tobin, She Rote) Jordan W. (Don't Go Chasin Atwaterfalls) Dave M. (Balloneous Assault) Jason P. (Marc Vlasic Pickle Defense) The Clayton Region seems the most predictable in terms of projected group winners which probably means we'll see some upsets. Defending champion Chet is the biggest favorite to make the Elite 8 and it will be interesting to see who can challenge Matt M and Sobhi Y to make the double elim. While former champ Sohbi is considered one of the greatest Tecmo players ever, Matt gets the nod due to his impressive year of tournament play including last year's Madison Final 4 run. Eric O and Erik M are perennial Top 16 players who are capable of making a deep run. Travis R and Joesph N represent some of the Nebraska talent finally making it's way to Madison. Mark Duper Region Projected Group Winners Group H - Luke C. Group I - Jon J. (daboy) Group J - Jeff B. Group K - James T. (skunkerofbestinworld) Group L - Chris V. (vogtcd11) Group M - Matt O. (LuckyTool) Group N - Adam G. (Garbage) Elite 8 Favorites Jon J. (daboy) Luke C. Darkhorses Ryan K. (Hoigaard2) Jess S. (Schuk) Jay H. (birdhas_uwl) Tony J. (Dotdon) Justin O. Taha Y. (Monkimanmanmonk) Best Names Corey L. (Hingle McCringleberry) Jon S. (RogerCraig'slist) Brett Michael S. (Jesus von Fitzenhopper) GARY M. (SEXY LOVES SANDWICHES) Gabriel J. (Likesbutts) Realistically, I have no idea who will make the Elite 8 from the Duper Region. I went with Luke of his showings in Iowa and Nebraska (only loss was to Chet) and with feared Jon (Daboys) J who is potentially due for some damage in his second Madison showing. Jeff B, who made the big Elite 8 run last year in dominating fashion and Midwest Tecmo Tournament organizer Chris V are itching to prove they belong among the elite. Hometown Shunker and Garbage are always a threat to go on run. Matt O was one win away from making Mort one of the best players to never win Madison. The one thing this region lacks is clear favorites. Expect major upsets here but be surprised if someone from the Duper Region wins the tournament. Ferrell Edmunds Region Projected Group Winners Group O - Kyle M. (Regulator088) Group P - Francis B. (mort) Group Q - Seth B. (Virtuoso) Group R - Erik J. (rikfenny) Group S - Kevin M. (buzzsaw) Group T - Tony O. (AverageTSBPlayer) Group U - Troy H. (PrimeTime) Elite 8 Favorites Kyle M. (Regulator088) Francis B. (mort) Darkhorses John H. (ButtonSpaz) Tom B. (8-bit) Ed G. (edisaurusrex) Best Names Luke L. (DutchHammer) Brad A. (Rypien Brawler) Patrick D. (Anders to the Top) Jordan K. (Showtime Loo) Barry K. (Brute Farce) Potentially the best player never to win at Madison, Kyle (Regulator) was one win away from fulfilling the 10-0 t-shirt he wore last year and is the clear favorite of the Edmonds region to make the Elite 8 and to win the entire tournament. The other clear favorite in the region is Mort, who has won most every tournament of note not featuring Chet. Which local player can knock one of these guys out of the tourney? Seth B., Erik J., and Troy H. are elite lWisconsin players who play online. Their unique play will throw someone for a loop. Tony O. and his entourage is one of the most intimidating plays in all of Madison. While he might not be favored to win his group, Ed G is certainly capable of ruining any of these player's day. Jim Jensen Region Projected Group Winners Group V - Matt V. (bigmv54) Group W - Rico R. (ryanr33fulcher) Group X - Louis B. (red98sethuthut) Group Y - Brent B. (bgboud2) Group Z - Derek R. (tecmopsycho) Group AA - Josh H. (sonofpatbeach) Group BB - AJ B. (adversity) Elite 8 Favorites Louis B. (red98sethuthut) Matt V. (bigmv54) Darkhorses Steven M. (Meest) Kyle F. (Flo) Barry A. (Bob Nelson) Lucas S. (Breaker) Adam L. (smoolorf) Josh H. (Houlie) Best Names Isaac L. (SEX PANTHER) Dan D. (Child of Destiny) Brock F. (Brock Lobsters) Jake I. (Beef Juice) nick t. (The Pecan Sandies) Big time tourney player Matt V is the favorite to win the Jensen and he's joined by probably one of the most improved Tecmoers in the last two years, Louis B. Typical favorite and former champion Josh H not only has to battle travelling to his own tournament but also running the mike before every round. If he can get past the distraction monster he is one of Tecmo's elite. Brent B and Derek M are two tapping tournament veterans who play a ton of games and are capable of running with the best. AJ has completely revamped his game from last year and is hungry to prove himself. Speaking of tapping, Kyle F will give Louis all he can handle and has the game to make the Elite 8. Thanks to the guys at Tecmomadison.com, especially Tony, for their awesome tourney site that made this breakdown possible. View full article
  12. “We try to ensure that brothers and other guys traveling together don't end up in close proximity to one another,” he added. “No one wants to travel a long distance just to encounter one with whom they are familiar.” Chet Holzbauer, last year's champion, is the favorite in the Mark Clayton Region. He wouldn’t be mistaken as this year’s overall favorite either. He is 42-1 in his last six major Tecmo tournaments. "The Mark Clayton Region is stacked," said Tony James, a TecmoIX analyst. "This region is the home to defending Madison champion, and you would have to believe the overall No. 1 seed." Along with Chet, there is another Final Four participant from TecmoVIII in Matt Miller in the Mark Clayton Region. Another player in the Clayton region that reached the Elite 8 at TecmoVIII is Jeff B. "Getting out of this region will be nothing short of amazing," James said. Among three of last year's top eight is “Best in World” Sobhi, who is a former champion and four-time Final Four participant at Madison. He once made the finals three years in a row. Eric O'Dell, Detroit Kumite's fearless founder, is a force to be reckoned with, according to James. Alongside him is Louis Buennagel, Francis Buennagel's brother. Louis is looking to get out of his sibling's shadow. He’s coming off a finals appearance at the Boneyard Bowl in Cleveland. "I've gone this far without even mentioning some other strong players like Erik Merliss, Johnny Bailey and Immortl," James said. Like every other region, the Jim Edmunds Region has a lot of power players sprinkled throughout. Groups O and P contain two online virtuosos who have proven their ability to back up live play in other tournaments. Kyle Miller should plow through Group O with little resistance, much like last year's group play where he only gave up 3 points in all three games, according to TecmoIX analyst Erik Bergstrom. Francis Buennagel — also known as Mort — who was featured heavily in the NFL Films documentary, will be the one to watch in Group P. He's the lone participant with Madison experience against virtual unknowns in that group. "Whether this helps or hurts him remains to be seen," Bergstrom said of Mort. "It's possible he may have to rely on his lucky cartridge lick sooner than he anticipates." Only one participant in Group Q comes with no Madison experience. It may be a wild chase to see who advances from there, Bergstrom noted. Could it be Eric D. who shocked the world by beating Sobhi in last year's tournament? Perhaps the returning Seth B. is ready to continue his winning ways, going far in TecmoVII. He was absent in last year's bracket. In Group R, Erik J. stands as a favorite, and being a Madison native, he's got home field advantage in a group of mainly newcomers. Another former Madison champion resides in Group S, Kevin Miller, of Milwaukee. A somewhat early exit last year should have Miller hungry to 'buzzsaw' through his group, according to Bergstrom. Group T should prove to give off the most volume out of the Edmunds region, with every participant coming with Madison experience, including Tony Orenga and his cheering faction of followers. Group U comes with perhaps the most participants with something to prove, mostly all having wins in tournament play. Troy Hansen is the one to keep an eye on out of this group, with a solid third place in last year's Madison tournament. Hansen hit a snag in the Midwest tournament in Ohio afterwards and will most likely be looking to the hallowed grounds of Madison to return to glory. Luke Carlberg and Jim Bontempo, the only two-time Madison winner, highlight the Mark Duper Region. Carlberg is 26-2 in his last four major Tecmo tournaments. "With the exemption of a hand full of online players, this has to be the greatest assemblage of Tecmo Super Bowl players ever,” Carlberg said. “The competitive skill level is so high that once you get to the field of 56 every game is a dog fight. Jon Jones, better known as Daboy, is always a player to look out for every year. He also can make a run in the Duper Region. Other notable players in the Mark Duper Region are Chris Vogt, who is fittingly labeled the “Dan Marino of Tecmo,” James T. and Matt O’Toole. Juicer Adam G., better known as Garbage, also has a shot at advancing far in the Duper region. The Jim Jensen Region appears to be the least likely group up for the task, said TecmoIX analyst Matt Knobbe. While group bye favorites Josh Holzbauer and Matt Vogt have a great shot at making the Elite 8, it's simply been a while since either has been crowned a champion. Well known for their online as well as tournament play, Derek Ruble and Brent B. are threats to go on long tournament runs, said Knobbe, who operates TecmoBowl.org. With over 30 tournament games under their belt, Madison veterans Rico R., Kyle F. and former champion Peter K. are capable of running the table into the finals if they've worked off their rust. The tournament format has changed for the first time since TecmoIII. "Rather than dividing participants into groups of four and conducting a round-robin, this year's group play will consist of various 8-man double-elimination tournaments," the Madison website said. Group Winners and Group Runners-Up of each double-elimination tournament will advance to a larger “Bracket”. The initial rounds in the Bracket will be single-elimination. Double-elimination will be introduced for the Elite Eight Bracket, and the TecmoIX champion will eventually be crowned. “Having a double elimination final eight,” Knobbe said, “will possibly be the greatest display of Tecmo Super Bowl talent of this century.” Chris Vogt is a national Tecmo Super Bowl writer and can be followed on Twitter @@vogtcd. Matt Knobbe, Erik Bergstrom and Tony James contributed to this story. View full article
  13. Made a couple calls to people who know people who know people, and got the early lines on some of the more intriguing prop bets for Tecmo X. Feel free to weigh in on any of these, or if you "hear" (read: "think") of others feel free to post them here. (***Legal reminder/disclaimer that this post/topic should be used for entertainment purposes only***) Tecmo X Champion’s State: Wisconsin 3-2 Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky 4-1 Minn/Iowa/NE/IL/Dakotas 8-1 Field 10-1 (While your first glance would be to look at this and say making Wisconsin nearly a 1-1 favorite is foolish, realize that in the 9 tournaments so far, 7 have been won by a Wisconsinite. Mort (NY) and Sobhi (MN) are the only outsiders to break through, and Sobhi will not be at TecmoX. Beyond the past WI winners, the overall depth from this state is universally known. Just when you think you’ve named all the WI contenders, then you realize, “Oh yeah, that guy could do well, too.” The Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky contingency is strong, with the Millers, Vogts, DaBoy, Psycho, et al, so they are a very worthy #2 choice and would shock nobody to claim the title. Some may look at the Minn/Iowa/NE/IL/Dakotas group at 8-1 as a sucker bet, but based on sheer quantity of competitors coming from those states and the fact that NE/Iowa/Minnesota seemingly host more tournaments than all the rest of the states in the union combined, someone could sneak through. The Field, while a longshot at 10-1, could provide great value. You get Mort and Lou, Toolie, O’Dell, BGBoud, Arncoem, some online West Coast guys, as well as the mysterious Gats… ***Apologies if anyone felt slighted about not getting their named mentioned in this section. Too many to sift through. This was just meant as a jumping-off point, and outside of clicking on every player’s name, Vegas does not know the origins of every contestant) Will the Winner of Tecmo X be a Repeat Champion? Yes +500 No -375 (Based on sheer numbers, the odds favor a new champion. But the roster of former champions still in their prime is intimidating. The “Yes” odds took a hit with rumors of Peter K’s tournament departure. The smart money would seem to be that a new champion places their name in the Badger Bowl rafters, but who’s *really* comfortable betting against Chet these days?) Of the Top 64 Seeds (#1 & 2 in Each Group), How Many Make it to Single-Elim? +/- 59.5 (No clue what this number was last year, but traditionally this is not a tournament filled with early upsets. The Vegas line allows for 4 “unseeded” players to break through, but do we see a 5th?) Total Combined Losses for the Remaining Players as The Elite 8 Double Elim Begins: +/- 1 (Last year, only group winners made it to the Elite 8, so there was not a loss among them yet. Vegas nearly made this number 0.5, but a firm 1 was eventually settled on. Can group winners make it two straight years of an undefeated Elite 8 field? To do it, they’ll need to go a combined 48-0 to open Tecmo X.) Who Scores the Most Points in Opening Double-Elim Play? Chet vs Regulator (This stat blew Vegas away: In Tecmo IX, Chet and Regulator both scored 104 points exactly in opening round Double-Elim play, en route to meeting in the finals for the 2nd straight year. Very evenly-matched duo here. Who lays the hammer down harder in the Tecmo X opening round? Vegas gives a slight nod to Regulator, who you have to assume comes into Tecmo X with an enormous chip on his shoulder after 2 straight runner-up finishes. Beware, all who find themselves in his group.) How Many Guys Will Wear Drag in an Attempt to Win the $100 “Best Costume” Prize? +/- 2.5 (This is an interesting bet. There are a couple schools of thought- If someone went all-out and dressed in a Cannonball Run style of drag, they’d be almost guaranteed to win the prize based on guts alone. But, if they do, what route do they take? The sexy vixens that eventually win the Cannonball? Or Farrah Fawcett’s character? The 2.5 line Vegas set was under the assumption that two guys would make a “team” costume, leaving the window open for someone else push this over the #. All that said, Vegas likes the under. An awful lot of testosterone among this group.) How Many Burt Reynolds Costumes? +/- 5.5 (This line assumes that one of every 50 entrants will attempt a Burt Reynolds costume, many of which may or may not even be inspired by the actual Cannonball Run film. Vegas likes the over and anticipates a Burt Reynolds army wandering the Plaza at Midnight.) At What Time will Twitter Lock Chris Vogt’s Account Due to Excessive Tweeting? +/- 7:45pm (Vegas isn’t sure what time Twitter eventually locked Vogt’s account last year, but with a year under his belt and the fact that Tecmo X will be the most social-media-heavy Madison tourney yet, don’t be surprised if this goes under.) At Its Peak, How Many Members of the Orenga Entourage? +/- 10 (Again, Vegas isn't sure on the history of this bet, but if you were to base it on sheer decibel level, you would put the +/- at 1,596 members) Who's got more action or thoughts on these so far?
  14. So with a bunch of us staying at the Super 8 on Hayes, instead of a mini-tourney, was wondering if a team thing would be interesting to you guys. Maybe pairs or groups of 3-4 and duke it out. I still would have to think about stuff, but figured I'd throw this out there if we're gonna have a bunch of guys playing anyways..any takers?
  15. This is my recap of my tecmo pilgrimage to THE tournament of tournaments, Tecmo Madison v10.0 The Gannonball Run. (sorry it's taken so long, but I came home to a sick wife, daughter AND mom-in-law, and then ended up sick and delirious myself, only coming out of it today) I had spent a couple Saturdays leading up to TecmoX rassling up some mayhem at Manyo's in preparation, and felt very good about where my game was at as a result. The days leading up to leaving, I had a void of playing games online, not on purpose, as I held out for league games and had a busy couple of days prepping for the voyage, and couldn't match time with opponents. My wife was very supportive even though she would be very happy if I dropped tecmo altogether, and she knew how much making this trip to the Tecmo Tourney Mecca meant to me. I had made promises online that I would be at TecmoIX but the birth of our first child, my daughter Josie, in February made the choice easy for me that I would be watching the live stream for the 3rd straight year. And each year, the presentation was better than ever. After watching the end of TecmoIX (we had friends over that day so I really only caught the end of the tourney), I laid the groundwork for punching my ticket to Madison for TecmoX, by getting the boss on board with me going the next year. The 2 months leading up to TecmoX were wrought with nervous anticipation for the experience of a lifetime. Playing and watching tecmo alongside so many guys I've built relationships with over the last couple of years, and partaking in the Madison experience in general. I was just as excited for the tecmo to be had on Friday night as I was for the Saturday throwdowns itself. My flight left SeaTac on Friday afternoon and touched down early in Chicago, which worked out perfectly time wise for my ride to pick me up. Here's a pic from the plane as I'm arriving showing what a frozen tundra Lake Michigan is I had the pleasure to ride from ChicagoLand to Madison with the Michigan set, the O Brothers, O'Dell and O'Toole. I couldn't have asked for a better pair of guys to usher me to my first Madison. Giddy with anticipation that arriving at the Super 8 was only a couple of hours away, we chatted about life and tecmo, and it was so cool to be able to be in their company. After a stop at the Ginger Burger Chain, some Ill Communication was cued up and I was getting more and more pumped. Arriving to Madison was a bit anticlimactic initially as we took a couple of wrong turns trying to navigate our way to the Super 8 on Hayes with dwindling E-Navigator juice. BUT WE MADE IT! My roomies, Manyo and Coco were at the Badger Bowl, as was my brothafromanothamotha DiAZZhole hisself. We got to the O'Crew's room and I received intel from Derek aka tecmopsycho that a welcoming tecmo beacon was a couple floors up in 315, where the Midwest contingent was preparing a Chrysler T&C tourney. We ran into Joey V on the way upstairs, who had an impressive run of games on the drive to Madtown, and then... Wow. I was very excited to meet Derek and Jon (daboy) who I've had plenty of chats with, and Chris Vogt just bleeds brotherhood as well. Aaron Hake and Matty were in there too, and it was really great to put a face to the names. These guys are all cool as shit and it was a pleasure to hang out tecmo style with them. Chris hugs me, Jon and Derek shake my hand and we're all just grinning. Matty was on the other side of the room trying to beat a TCS deadline on a shitty connection, and Aaron and I break the ice a bit later (sorry I didn't sooner, I was kind of in tecmobrotherhood over stimulation). I wish I had taken a pic. Jon and later Aaron get in on some FG challenge action, showing off their keeker skills and Chris sets up the live stream of the Chrysler T & C challenge. I finally pop my live vs online cherry vs Matty, the guy I had probably played the most recently online in an OT Mia-Chi affair. We played a tight game where he was able to utilize a blocked FG Kicker scoop and score on his way to a 21-14 victory. I get word a few minutes later that the Coco Manyo punks are back at the Super 8 and I make my way down to the 134. I arrive and it's just smelling awesome in there (was that Axe body spray?). I get to meet Coco in person and we're hitting it off and all of a sudden, a room of 3 just morphed into a room of like 13. Mort was like the first to show up, and after some brief introductions, it took us no time to agree to play. I don't remember the matchup, but I do remember getting a fumble to get the edge and then getting another fumble to seal it late. Meanwhile the tecmoers keep streaming in. Jim Socks was one, along with Woodshed. I had a fun game with Jim Socks. I got lucky as QB Bills missed like 3 open receivers in the back of the end zone to give me the ball late and help me pull out a Giants Bills slugfest. Very cool dudes. Joey Gats makes his way in and I didn't see him play much that night, but he had held his own at the Badger Bowl vs Chet and he was very quiet yet very friendly. My main man Diaz shows up, and a big old bear hug proceeded (no homo!) and I mean shit, there was a ton of guys in there. I think I lost a game and thus my spot in the games (or maybe I just left) and headed back up to 315 to see what was going on with the Chrysler T & C tourney. When I got there Ryan Stewart was there, I think Kevin Cabarello too (how did I not introduce myself to you this weekend?) as well as a couple of Elite Eight tecmoers from TecmoIX from Kiel, Lucas and Jeff I believe? Hey Ryan, I'm better at introducing myself than you #whothefuckareyouguys? I got to play Derek in the tourney, and he waxed me, racking up a ton of rushing yards with Byner after getting a stop on my first drive. I bombed it a bunch to score some TDs, but I had no answer for his O that game. And thus ended my (tuck tail and?) run in the Chrysler T & C tourney. I headed back to the 134 for some more tecmo action. The Michigan O'Crew eventually found their way down there, and so did Mort's brother Louis. Let me just say I was excited also to meet these two guys, the Buennagel brothers. Like the Vogts, these guys are the epitome of brothers in tecmo arms. I am so impressed with them and how they just made the Gats to Madison thing happen. Big BIG props to both of you. A real pleasure to meet you face to face and to play together. I got to play my man Diazz in a Pitt Dallas Matchup. I'm pretty sure I got to be Pitt and gave Sir Mattrick Swayze his lone loss of Friday Tecmo. The Blue Moon and a trip to the bathroom area left me a little foggy for what happened the rest of the night. All I know is I wanted to play more, and this was after Manyo had just beaten me twice (and he was running on fumes I'm sure) the 2nd one a 24-0 blowout that I was not wanting to end my night with, but it was 2:30 and the tournament was early. So bed it was. Woke up early on Saturday wanting to make sure I wasn't late. Felt kind of like crap (hello captain obvious #consequences) but a shower helped that a bit. After retrieving my NES from the 315, we eventually embarked on our way to the Badger Bowl, with the Man, the Myth, the Legend Segathon sharing the back seat of Coco's ride with me. Another guy I was pretty pumped to meet. Sega might have some rare sightings for games at times, but he always brings it with his posts, and I for one would love to participate in an actual Segathon as well! We get to the Badger Bowl and holy crap the parking lot is seemingly already full. I check in for the tourney and find out where I'm supposed to play and just meet a ton of tecmo brothers, including the Miller brothers, as I first meet Kyle and then Matt, two guys I've had a ton of online rivalries with, as well as shared a lot of words with, re: tecmo and life. Really great to finally meet you guys as well. As we wait for group play to commence, I watch Regulator and Gats battle a matchup involving Detroit and maybe San Diego, maybe Miami? It took me a bit to figure out who was who as my Tecmo OCD kicks in (player 1 SHOULD sit to the left of player 2!) which it seemed like the Holzy brothers seemed to stick to, while a lot of players broke my secret code of tecmo Obsessive Compulsive honor. Anyway, I find out that Gats was Detroit and he handed Regulator his only loss of the day (that I could tell), in a tight one. Ryan Stewart was there too and we fired up a game after, but then it was time for group play and we cut it off pretty early. Time for some Madison Action! Game 1 was vs a very friendly dude named Matt. He was from Missouri and had been to Madison a couple times before as well as some other tourneys. He picked a Cincy SD matchup and I went with SD, liking the better speed at RB and WR, and a bit more options on D. He wins toss and kicks. I get the ball and drive. I'm down to his 10 and running along the bottom sideline with Billy Joe Tolliver when... FUMBLE! Of course it bounces in bounds and is recovered by the Bengals. I am able to recover however, somehow getting Leslie O'Neal to get a pick off of Boomer. Back in business. I drive, get a score. Then Matt beats me cheating a little too short and ties it up on a nice pass, 7 up. My next possession, it happens again, I suffer the dreaded jealousy. I'm able to hold for a FG. Getting the ball back, I got a dive play started but a drone from the bottom beats his man and meets me in the hole. In comes Fulcher and he separates Butts from the ball, it's picked up by Cincy and housed. 17-7 just like that. Trying to keep my cool, I try to set up a good hail mary attempt with Vlasic, but it's no good. 2nd half starts with Cincy getting the ball. Boomer tests the waters deep and the Chargers secondary makes him pay with an INT. I go to change Billy Joe back in and check the conditions when another guy (in our group I believe) starts saying something about only checking/changing players twice per game. I'm not dawdling as I'm checking and changing, but this had an effect later in the game. To Matt's credit, he said it didn't matter to him. As I learned through the day, he's a very cool dude, and was hanging around all day, filming much of the elite 8 games on his camera. Back to the game. I make the INT count and score, cutting the lead to 17-14. Then force a 4th and short in his own territory and he decides to punt (I'm thankful for this). Unfortunately I fumble it away again. Matt scores and pushes the lead to 24-14, and we're in the 4th quarter. I'm a bit in shock. My best bet is to put Butts at WR (and in the future I will) but I'm only able to manage 10 yards at a time with Billy Joe running as the Bengals focus is on Butts the runner and down to almost 2 minutes left, and getting desperate with time, I need to take some chances. The first chance is picked off by Fulcher, no surprise and my hopes of pulling this game out evaporates. I congratulate Matt on a good game and wander off and around in a state of disbelief. I've got a while to wait, and I get nothing but support and encouraging words from just a ton of guys. I'm pretty sure I meet Boud at this time and we commiserate for a bit. And I try to separate my mind from what just happened tecmowise and try to approach the rest of my group play with steely reserve. The winners played out of turn according to alphabetical order, so I had to wait a little bit longer than expected to play again. I checked my man Manyo and saw some of his first game. Here's a pic of either his 2nd or 3rd game. Witnessed the Orenga Posse. Here it looks like Orenga is telling me to eat shit (not sure if this was his game 1 loss) Stopped by and introduced myself to Dave Murray (you rock man, thanks so much for what you do and did for those of us that are at home during Madison, the evolution of the stream is incredible!). And then BRUDDOG comes up and introduces himself. I was so glad to meet Bruddog as well, we've had some epic late night chat sessions and he's done so much for us online garbage players (AND CONTINUES TO DO SO!) I really can't thank him enough. It was great to shake his hand, and eventually made good on buying him a beer. He was insistent on buying round 2, but I eventually declined (I only had a couple beers on the day, kind of still hung over from Friday Night Lights) Here's a pic from where Dave was sitting and streaming and you can see Bruddog, Mort and Chris Vogt all in game. Finally I get to game 2 after a looooong wait. I play a guy named Jeremy. He was another cool dude, and again I lost the toss. He offered up GB and the Jets. I went with the better D in NY. This was an ugly affair. He scored first, getting a FG. I got a TD after we traded possessions I think. To end the first half, he lined up the FG, I blocked it, and then his kicker picked it up! I had visions of my Matty V Chrysler loss running through my head as he zigged and zagged, but somehow, the Jets corralled him near the 5 to avert disaster. The 2nd half was all ugly. I actually got a FG blocked and MY KICKER housed it for the final score. Both offenses sucked, and I grinded to a 14-3 win. There was much relief though, as I was able to get a W and walk a slip up to the table. This I think was where I actually introduced myself to Dave M. Game 3 was one where I won a toss. Not really having a great plan for picking matchups this early, I went with Wash Minny, and my opponent Johnny (Johnny Tecmo) took Wash. Johnny's been to every Tecmo Madison but the 1st, and his resume includes wins over Louis B (redsethut) and Flo, as well as a 6 point loss to Regulator. I was able to get the turnovers with the Viking D and Hershel did most of the damage en route to a 24-14 W (my memory of this one is the most hazy). While waiting to see who my next opponent was, I watched the Winner's bracket final between Matt (Heechy) and Edwin (Technical Difficulty) who had traveled with his brother and friends all the way from NY, arriving at 1am in the morning on Saturday. They played a tight one, with a Jets and SD, and watching it unfold, and seeing Heechy pull it out, I started thinking a bit about how I might try to beat Edwin if I got to that point, as I noticed he was trying to run around the offset toss play vs Butts, instead of under the blockers. Anyway, the next game was to decide who I would play next, and it was a matchup between Matt (who had beaten me in game 1) and Ross (the Passion and the Fire). If that's not a great nickname I don't know what is. Ross pulled out a tight one, 10-7 with Washington over San Diego, scoring a late TD and preserving it with the D. Gametime vs Ross came and he won the toss, picking KC CIN. I just have a dislike for Cincy, mostly due to the lack of speed at the Receiving positions, so I went with KC. Then I proceeded to pick the dumbest playbook ever, using the two proset sweep plays, which were totally ineffective as Ross won the taps vs me. I don't know what it is, but I know I should go offset vs Cincy (unless I'm detroit). Anyway, it was a struggle throughout. I got one key breakaway with Okoye to end one of the quarters (the 3rd I think) and utilized Deberg to Paige in true garbage fashion to pull out a 17-7 win that was closer than the final score, much closer. That was a great game Ross. So it's on to the win and your in, also the 4th straight lose and you're out game for me. I win the toss and think of a matchup that I could run offset offense with both teams and go Jets Dallas, hoping he'd pick NY like he did in the SD Jets matchup heechy offered. He didn't, but I'm cool with it, thinking I can utilize the offset and get the inevitable LVP throws from Aikman into the Jets coverage that should make the Cowboys pay. Well, it started out pretty tight I believe, we might have traded possessions with no scores, or maybe I turned it over then he scored a FG. Then I screwed the pooch. Offset pass 2, I have an easy dumpoff to RB over the middle but double tap and throw it to the covered RB at the bottom of the screen and of course the Dallas D picks it off! Edwin is able to take the lead into halftime and get the ball back. Early in the 2nd half, Gats is there, Odell is there, I'm feeling the support from my tecmo brethren, but I can't get the tecmo gods to side with me in this one. I'm able to get Edwin to throw a couple of passes into coverage, but they just bounce away harmlessly and he eventually is able to score, forcing me to get desperate and force it to Al Toon, but he didn't catch it once and I have to accept the fate pretty early in the 4th that my day of competition is over as I suffer through a 31-7 loss, in which by all means, I was outplayed. I got to talking to Edwin's brother Edward and we exchanged numbers and talked tecmo, which was great therapy after the disappointment of not advancing to the bracket. Edwin played Joeygats in the round of 64 and won after Joey made a couple of poor choices (not exchanging the controller [i wasn't much help, I'll admit at the time] and then not punting late when it was tied and near his own end zone). Edwin then went on to play Matty V and I saw Matty chatting them up a lot after the game, giving him a lot of props. So for final words of my Madison play before moving on to my Madison spectatorship, I got 3 words. Grinding not grooving. I can't expect to do much better if I don't play better, although the losing 4 fumbles in the first game was kind of a shock to the system. On to the Bracket! Man, all of a sudden there's just a ton of games going on and I don't know what to pay attention to. I'm perusing and then I hear Manyo is taking on the Orenga Posse. Boom, gotta be there. If there's anything that can take your mind off of a disappointing showing at your first Madison, it's watching your homeboy take on the Orenga Posse in Madtown! WITH a side of Sega with some inspirational words about a certain BSD. Unfortunately, Manyo did not heed the warning to not give Orenga the Rams and paid the ultimate price. My other 134 mate Coconuts did however take on the Orenga Posse and emerged victorious. One of my biggest regrets is not getting to see more of Josh's incredible Elite 8 run. Vs Orenga I couldn't get to a spot where I could see. I did see most of the end of the game vs Bruddog on the big screen, especially the dagger Whiskey Wade to AC JJ late with a 3 point lead that all but sealed it. While watching this I was kind of hovering around O'Toole playing a game that earlier he seemed to have in the bag, but as you know in tecmo, that can quickly turn for the worse, and all of a sudden he's losing late in the game, but pulled it out with a decently long pass (non bomb) to an open CHI WR (BURNER ALERT!) and he pulled it out. Luckily I was able to help stop a tragedy when Edwin's brother darn near walked right between the players and the TV, probably tripping over the controllers and knocking over the system. I had earlier watched a bit of Daboy vs Josh H and Chet vs Derek Psycho, and Louis' Dal Pitt Matchup in the same round. The theme is, even if you're there THERE'S JUST TOO DAMN MUCH TECMO TO KEEP ABREAST OF! Also too damn many tecmoers to meet in one day. As many guys as I finally met, there are just as many I didn't and wish I had. Here's hoping for TecmoXI Well things got interesting late. In the sweet 16, the best view I could get was behind Diaz vs Chet (TAKE THE RAMS!) with a kind of view of Louis vs Chris Vogt and Josh vs AirBonTempo. The best of these games that I could see was the Louis and Chris Vogt game. I stood kind of next to Mort and caught a joke one of the brothers made regarding which team Louis was in reference to the Mort game vs Skunker a few years back. Chris pulled it out and for each of the winners, the Elite 8 meant you had the luxury of double elimination. During the first round of the Elite 8 I believe (since noone was in danger of being eliminated), I finally got some food and took a load off, hanging out with Psycho and Gats. Was nice hanging out and breaking bread in a manner of speaking. Derek is an outstanding person and I'm really glad for that time (and the beer earlier, which was soon followed by the Tecmo Bunny ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT!) From here on out, there were still a lot of great games. Probably my favorite to watch was the Chet vs Skunker matchup. Cleveland vs Green Bay. Skunker got an early advantage, and then toyed with the tecmo gods and paid for it, in more ways than one. Skunker took a lead into halftime getting the ball to start the 3rd. The first half was chock full of hilarious back and forth Wisconsin style as Skunker would make a play and then get up and (for lack of a better description) juggle the balls? of the tecmo gods maybe? IDK lol. Anyway, with the lead and the ball in the 2nd half, Skunker took forEVER with the ball in his own end zone running to the line of scrimmage and then back again with QB Browns planning a deep heave, only the drones knocked it down BACKwards out of the back of the end zone for a momentum shifting glitch safety! This cut Skunker's lead to 10-9 and quickly turned into a 16-10 lead for Chet, complete with his own answer of juggling the balls. Skunker drives and cuts it to 3 and Chet drives late and is forced to a decision at 4th and 9 from about 20 yards out? FG gives you a 6 point lead, but you already got a 3 point lead. Chet goes for it, and the Majik Man pulled another rabbit out of his hat, only this time it wasn't to Sterling! CC in the endzone for the 10 point lead. Dagger! That ended it essentially and Chet enjoyed many of the local fans, family and friends uttering "GARBAGE!" throughout in good nature. Also of note, the Elimination game between Odell and Chris. Just watching the 2nd half, I could tell Odell was the Bucs (it was on the big screen, and I only knew they were playing not who was who, but I could figure it out from style) and I saw Haddix just being a menace and the dagger Gary Anderson JJ in JJ grill in the end zone. Another great tecmo moment. I then watched Odell and Skunker duel, but while this one was a good one early on, the game got decided relatively early, and thus I walked around to see... Battle Royale part 1 One great game that I haven't seen hit a lot of the recaps was the first game Winner's Bracket Final between Regulator and Chet. It was Mia vs Rams, with Chet as MIA and Reg as the Rams. This one was a doozy. It ended 20-14 as a last second hail mary into the endzone went to a diving WR but was PICKED OFF! Here's a shot of the crowd as Regulator was forced to punt with 2 minutes left and up 20-14 in the 4th. The Matty V vs Skunker game that followed was also EPIC! Then Chet beat Matty to set up the rematch for the 3rd year running. Before that we did our HSTL and Online Garbage pictures. I also managed to Photobomb the Chrysler T&C crew's group pic Moulds style! Regulator was on a true mission, and I regret not having a chance to play him or Matt live. Some other guys I met during the day. Knobbe - Obi Wan So great to finally meet you sir! You are kind and wise and have been a huge help to me figuring some commish things out and helping leagues go along. And the repository! I mean TBORG! Great things man. Great things! Rico and Heechy. I wish I could have played Heechy in group play, but I was definitely glad to meet him, and Rico. What a couple of great guys. I saw Heechy suffer the fate of playing as the Cards vs Diazzhole with the Steelersand missing a last second fg to lose 3-0 BRUTAL! Then Rico suffers a loss at the hands of my brothafromanothamotha on his sweet 16 run. You couldn't meet 3 cooler guys anywhere. Boud - Great to finally meet you. I feel you're pain. Ashman - Supersonics NOT PACKERS lolz. Great to meet you and hope to see you in ETC Reboot! Chet - Wishing you the best and like I said, you guys ever come out here, just give us some notice and we'll make something happen. Shoot that goes for everybody. Great run again and congrats! Josh - Thanks for helping settle that WR running issue and great to meet you. Both you Holzy brothers, that Madison tournament is something else man. It's not like I'm telling y'all something you don't already know! Hendershot - Fuck that tecmo bunny! The bunny was dope, but he wasn't a ninja! Airbontempo, ChaosRison, shit I'm just name dropping here, but really, it was great to share some time talking tecmo and otherwise. Anyone I met. For those that I didnt' , I"LL BE HUNTING YOU DOWN FOR A HANDSHAKE OR A BEARHUG at the next one, whereever whenever it is! Ryan - Great to meet you. I wish we could have finished our game. I heard you killed it on the stream. Look forward to queuing that up. Kweh - My first TPC game EVER vs the Mongrel and I get to meet him! Great to meet you man, and also heard you killed it on the stream. Good stuff! To wrap it up (WRAP IT UP B!) I ended the evening in heroic fashion (No Tecmo Brother left behind X2) We cooled it, literally, in coco's ride for awhile waiting for the fog to clear and making sure not to leave any Sega behind. Feeling wishy washy about the Plaza, I decided to hang out with JoeyGats and knock out some more tecmo, and we did, like a dozen games worth. Great playing with you in person man. You're a good dude and keep your head up. You never know what you can accomplish in life unless you try. Stayed up late, helped Mort carry a TV to his car after he got back from the Plaza. Saw what I thought to be like a BLUE LUIGI bounce in and snatch up a red Johnny Johnson shirt. Saw Coco in and finally was off to bed. Woke up to Odell and Otoole at the door, missing 4 texts from Odell in the process. No I obviously was not ready to go After a quick shower and packing up, I said my good bye to coco (thanks for all your hospitality, driving and great RUN! man) waved bye to Ryan and whoever else was in his ride, hopped in with the O Brothers and put the Super 8 in our rear view. We needed some grub and hit the BIGGEST CULVER'S in the WORLD! And it did NOT disappoint. Good eats. Then the O Brothers and I had another nice ride to O'Hare as I learned a couple things. There's a Depeche Mode song with a subliminal message. Something about the singer wanting "Dick in my arse"? Listen to it. See if you don't hear the same thing. And also. Tolls. We here in the NW haven't too many tolls to worry about. Not even a troll toll. But damn Illinois got a ton. As we got to a coin only toll, Me and O'Toole observed O'Dell's hidden stats. Let's just say he's the Cleveland Gary of the Coin Control. We exchanged our bro hugs and good byes and I proceeded (by sheer luck) right to my gate, which had a flight to Seattle at 3 or so and was boarding within minutes of me getting there. I asked if there were any openings on this flight since I had a ticket for a later one and I think they had to hold back their guffaws. Oh well, I had a nice restful stay at O'Hare. Tweeted a couple times. Got home super late to a super sick house and got sick a couple days later. Long live tecmo. Any and all tecmo. Especially live tecmo. Kamp out. Hope to see you in XI.
  16. I still have to go over plans with my sparring partner Toolie, but as of now, we could have anywhere from 2 to as many as 5 hours to kill, up until about 5:00-5:30 cst on FRI evening, just before we grab Kamphuna from O'Hare, enroute to our trip to Madison! Anyone down for some Tecmo, with maybe a console or two at a pub for a few hours? Drop me a PM if you are interested, and we'll be in touch by tomorrow. #TECMOX
