The bar only has frozen pizzas, chips, etc. As mentioned previously, we are bringing some food to munch on. I believe Dotz has a couple pork loins he is smoking and my wife and I are bringing some scotcharoos, chips and some buffalo chicken dip that pretty much rocks. If you want to order pizza from around town, they will deliver right to the bar and Don doesn't mind us eating in there, especially if we're drinking. There are more options than just pizza around town but I believe they are the only places that will deliver so you don't have to miss any Tecmo action. Some of the guys can comment from last year about the food we will have there. Basically it's not a full meal but it is enough to munch on that you won't be hungry if that makes sense.

Knobbe, You are correct but to be fair, you'll have to see the set up. It has been tradition for us to play our last game or two of the tourney on the big projector screen. I think you'll like the way things are set up. We did forget to mention the trophy that the winner gets to take home. They get their name on the trophy that stays at the bar as well as their own piece of hardware for the mantle. And again I'd like to say that we would appreciate any and all of you in attendance thanking Don (bar owner and bartender) for allowing us to have the Tecmo tourney at his bar. Harlan, IA doesn't have a huge selection of venues but we believe the Lounge is as good as any place around for this sort of an event. See you all Saturday!

The tourney will not be canceled because of the weather. It may affect the turn out but it will go on as scheduled. As mentioned, we will be setting up and testing on Friday night. I think all but two of the TV's we plan to play on were there last year. We have some TV's to bring in if we feel the delay affects play. These are 20+ year old systems, games, controllers, wires, etc. Keep in mind that some are in better shape than others. We will do our best to give the best equipment/play available at each station but there may be subtle differences. If we feel it will cause problems/issues, it will be fixed Friday night. We can't make everyone happy but we are trying our best to address any issues/concerns we are made aware of. We are playing in the tournament also so understand we want the best conditions as well when we play. With all due respect to Madison, we haven't had as many tournaments and we are more limited to our venue/equipment/etc. If you plan to have a good time playing Tecmo on Saturday, you will have a good time playing Tecmo.

We made a walk through last night of the Lounge to make a game plan of which TV's we wanted to utilize. Our plan is to have 8 systems going to help really speed up the group play. The plan is to play the final 4 on the projector screen again which is around 5' x 5'. Don has updated most TV's to flat screens and at least 6 of the systems will be on 32" or larger screens. We ask that you all show up at least 15 minutes before 1 p.m. so that we can get the groupings matched up as best as we can and start promptly at 1 p.m. If you're running late, just let us know by calling the bar phone 712-755-5050 and asking for Dotz or Mike. We've heard from a few new faces that plan to make the trip to the tourney so that should make our Calcutta and whole tourney experience the best yet. So far we've heard from players coming from 4 states. See you all Saturday!

One other thing to keep in mind for guys that haven't played in our tournaments in the past, when we have a system/TV open up, we go to the next game on the bracket and that's where they will play. This keeps things moving along so we can get the tournament finished up. Will Palik be able to repeat and add his name to the trophy a second time? Or will Moulds avenge his back to back losses in the title match from a year ago and put his name on the hardware? Will we have a local show up that hasn't played live tournaments and dominate? Will Dotz be able to finally tally his name as a tourney champ or will he drown in his adult beverages again after the first round? Will the Calcutta prize pool bring in more money than the entry fee prize pool? See all of these questions answered February 8th at the Lounge in Harlan, IA. We hope to see you all there.

We really don't have a "list" per say of registrants as we haven't put a website together or anything. We have a pretty good idea of talent level of the local guys and of the guys we've seen play at other tourneys so I think the grouping shouldn't be a problem figuring out in a short period of time. With the weather and other factors and unless we charge the entry fee online to 'guarantee' the entry, it's all shot out the window the day of the tourney anyway. I'd guess we should be in the 20-25 range of registrants. I hope this answers your question. As far as everyone bringing systems, the more we have available, the better. We SHOULD have everything covered but again, it's always nice to have a plan 'B' or 'C' in the case of Murphy's Law. We appreciate all the offers of NES systems, games, etc. The help offering is what it's all about. Thank you! The excitement is continuing to build here for our 4th Annual tournament. I was told we may have an appearance by the sports writer for our local paper to do an article on the tournament. That sort of thing is unheard of in Harlan as it is usually 100% local sticks & balls. Hopefully we don't scare him too bad and give him some positive things to write about if he shows. If anyone happens to come the night before (1 week from today), we will be setting up a couple of systems at the bar for an open practice and to try and rope some more peeps into playing.

Dotdon, Please bring any/all if you can. It is always nice to have a plan 'B' in case of equipment failure or Murphy's law. Thanks! Knobbe, That is awesome! It will be our pleasure to welcome the Godfather to our tourney. We have been having a group practice once a week for the last month or so. For some reason the 'practice' is usually delayed or forgotten about all together due to the cardboard boxes containing aluminum cylinders that keep showing up.

So to sum things up with what he has written above: The tournament is the SAME as it has been billed. Entry fee is $20. Group play will be played to determine tournament seeding. The tournament will be single elimination down to the round of 8 persons left. At that point, it becomes a double elimination tournament. Once down to 8, we will conduct the Calcutta (should take 15-20 minutes tops). Like Dotz said, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE. The last thing we were after was to scare people away from the tournament and we hope we didn't do that. As noted on the front page, we will start with registration at 11 and begin the tournament promptly at 1 p.m. We will have more systems this year which should allow group play to move along much faster and speed up the entire tournament. If you are running late that day or have questions for us, please call the bar phone at 712-755-5050. We will obviously be there by 11. Your $20 entry gets you at least 4 games and you'll have at least 2 chances to make some money. We pay back 100% and the tournament winner goes on the permanent Tecmo Tournament Champion's trophy that stays at the bar year round. Dotz and I will provide some sort of grub for us to munch on during the day. We are donating our equipment, time & money here because we love the game of Super Tecmo Bowl and want to celebrate this game with others that have the same passion for the game. All we ask is that everyone shows good sportsmanship (please keep heckling & smack talking in good taste) and thanks 'Don' the bar owner for allowing us to have the tournament at his bar. Thank you to everyone planning to participate. We hope the 4th annual tournament is the best yet.

tecmoman1, Would you still play with a Calcutta AND a small entry fee? As I mentioned, the idea behind the Calcutta with no entry is not for the experienced gamers that can play good Tecmo. It is to make sure we still have the 'also ran' participants that know going into it they are just donating their time/money. If the money/entry aspect is taken away, they have no reason not to get in and play 'free' games at the bar while they enjoy their favorite beverage and watch college basketball. How many is in your group and where would you be coming from?
-
DotDon, Good point and as Moulds pointed out, a small entry fee may also be a good idea to help eliminate this from happening. In all of the Calcutta tournaments I've seen, this potential has come up several times but I have yet to see someone 'forfeit' just because they thought they would win more money. That is where the buying half of yourself back comes in. If you can win the tournament, you're going to win it in order to collect. Another thing not pointed out is that anyone can purchase themselves during the auction. Then you would take all of the risk on yourself.
-
tecmoman1: I understand your concern completely. Maybe the best thing is to have a really cheap entry fee and the Calcutta. Or not to change it at all. We are throwing out this idea because we want you all to understand our concerns and then brain storm to the best ideas/format. I can assure you that with a Calcutta in Harlan, IA, no one will be playing in a "Free" Tecmo Tournament. I'd be willing to bet that there is more money in the prize pool with a Calcutta than if we were to just have an entry.
-
Moulds, great to hear you have clearance from the boss (a.k.a. Mrs. Moulds) Paying attention during the auction usually takes care of itself when it comes to money. I have been a part of several Calcuttas here locally as several of us really like to gamble. And yes, depending on who is all there that day, there could be some that participate in the bidding but have no interest in how the games turn out. Once the auction is completed, the pay will be collected. In the case we aren't able to collect right away, that player will go up for bid right away again and money will be immediately collected. We will be in charge of the prize pool so we will make sure it is collected so it can be paid out. The person doing the bidding is the one responsible for the FULL amount of the final bid. If the player he/she bought wants to buy up to half of themselves back, it is up to that player to get with the bidder and make payment/arrangements. The Calcutta will no doubt add another excitement to our Tecmo tournament and should keep more people interested in what is going on.

Okay guys, we are considering doing something sort of unique with the entry fee. Our concern is that as the tournament continues to grow and bring in a larger number of solid players, we will lose out on our local 'beer drinking' contingent. Therefore we want to make it more desirable for them to also participate and not simply 'quit' because they don't want to get embarrassed by 40 points which just cost them $20. Keep in mind that nothing is set in stone yet. I want to stress that. However, we do want to make this tourney fun and get as many participants as possible. Therefore, here is what we are thinking. We charge NO ENTRY fee. It costs you nothing to play if you decide you do not want to invest any money. We have our group play to determine the seeding. When the seeding is determined, we will have single elimination down to the final 8, then will be double elimination from there. BUT, BEFORE the tourney starts, we will have a quick Calcutta (auction) for each player. Anyone in attendance whether in the tourney or not can participate in the auction. Each player will be bid off and that money will make up our prize pool. Out of the prize pool, the top 4 will be paid in the tourney (40%-30%-20%-10%). As in true Calcutta style, a player may buy him/her self back for up to half of the auction amount. For example, if I were to buy a player 'A' for $30 and player 'A' wanted to buy half of himself back, his share of the $30 would be $15 and we would split any winnings that player 'A' accumulated in the tournament. We are asking opinions and thoughts of those that are interested in playing in this tournament. As we mentioned, anyone that shows up can essentially play for free. And anyone can bid on the guy that they want to cheer on in winning the tournament. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks for looking. I'm also going to post this in the forum for more input.

I'll check with Dotz and see if we can get permission from the bosses to attend. Less than an hour away is like a sore peter, can't beat 'er.
