  1. This format would be quite the opposite of "free". You don't have to buy anyone, but you have the opportunity to buy at least half of every player in the tournament. The prize money will be at least double what it would have been I would guess and now potentially 8 people can cash out instead of just 4. Don't let the format scare you off, it's still drinking beer and playing tecmo against some of the better players within a few hundred miles of Harlan. The auction is optional, but will be a lot of fun for everyone even if you are just watching it.
  2. This is the main problem doing it in a tecmo tourney. To get rid of the "conflict of interest", it would probably be best to still have a small entry fee that would go to the top 3 finishers. If you made it like a $5 entry, I don't think that would drive away the "just for fun" guys. I would think that the odds of a guy not buying himself back actually making it into the money is almost zero. The good players are going to buy themselves back...they'd be foolish not too.
  3. True Calcutta auctions would usually pay out more than 4 places, but for something like a Tecmo tourney, 4 places makes a lot of sense. Every player would be auctioned off, with the higher seeds (probably) going for more than the lower ones. Anyone is allowed to bid on any player they want, but that person must offer the player they buy the chance to buy 1/2 of themselves back. The player purchased can buy half of themselves if they want, but do not have too. So if I buy Knobbe for $100, he has the chance to give me $50 for the chance to earn half of what he wins in the tourney. If he gets 1st place, we would split the 1st place winnings evenly. But if he didn't make the final 4, we would each be out $50. If he declined to buy 1/2 of himself back, he wouldn't owe anything at all. So you have the chance to "bet" on yourself, but you are not forced too. But if you win the tourney and don't buy half of yourself back you won't win anything. So a lot of times at golf tourneys almost everyone will buy 1/2 of themselves back. The beauty of a calcutta is that you never know what the total pot will be until the auction is entirely over. So the order of the players auctioned will be key. I would suggest we start with the lower seeds first, that way we have a good idea of the total pot when we start bidding on the big money guys.
  4. As someone who does one of these auctions for the NCAA tourney every year and has also been in a few golf tournaments that use this format, I think this is an awesome idea! The hardest part will be the auction IMO, just getting people to understand what is going on and to be quiet during the bidding. if you have a good microphone and someone else running a laptop I think it would work. I would be more than happy to help you guys out if you need it. I'd also make people pay immediately at the conclusion of the auction, not settle up when it's all over. This will add an hour probably to the tourney but will keep the non-serious guys interested and put pressure on the "favorites". It also might make some of my degenerate friends want to ride along just to gamble on tecmo. I'm in for sure too, I got permission from the boss this week.
  5. These are some good ones. ATL - I could go either way here, I'd take controller 1 probably. TB - I hate Aikman. MIA - Never seen this matchup called, but I might start since I love MIA and most guys overrate RAI. BUF - I'll take my chances vs QB Eagles here. DEN - BHump is key, plus Elway can scramble on pass plays. Don't throw it unless u have too, McMillan/Clifton can destroy the pass game.
  6. Do I start the Clark Hamilton sponsorship drive here or should I just do a whole new thread?
  7. If Mort handles the $, I'm in for a share or two.
  8. I'll buy you a slice of pizza at 2 am, so your meals for Saturday are now covered. And I'll give you a $50 bonus for knocking out Orenga and another $75 for knocking out Bailey.
  9. We should probably be dead...running a red light going 45 mph on icy roads will get your heart rate up! The funny thing was that he told me when we left the hotel that he was the "worst driver ever" or something to that effect. I thought he was kidding!
  10. It was a good turnout, 38 total players. Thanks everyone who made the drive/flight out, we appreciate all of you coming and we also really appreciate everyone who supplied NES/TVs. There were a lot of weird games, OT games, safeties galore, and even some "doubles" street Tecmo played afterwards. Chet got back on track winning his 2nd Lincoln belt in a row after losing to Orenga earlier in the double elimination final 4. Orenga (2nd place) wins this tourney if it was still single elimination all the way through and the little shit knocked me out (again). Josh takes home a respectable 3rd only losing (twice) to Chet. Chris (Buck) takes 4th place after making the drive from Wichita. Shout out to Brian (Bad Moon Rison) for making it all the way from NY, good guy & good player. The new venue seemed to work well as we had plenty of space, the food was good, the NFL game was crystal clear on their giant projection screen, and the waitresses wore tight clothing. We also managed to raise a little money for charity, so overall I'd call it a success.
  11. I think BeefJuice may have actually coined the phrase, it's a little hazy for some reason.
  12. Maybe we can all chip in and "sponsor" Gats. He can pay us back by hustling peeps pre and post tourney. I don't think he plays with a NES controller though, he'd probably need some training.
  13. I sent a few of you guys emails to try and round up systems for Saturday and Knobbe is going to Goodwill to snag another TV or two so hopefully we are almost good to go with equipment now.
  14. Last year at Waterloo, I played CHI vs PHI 2 times in group play and I won both with CHI. (we kept rolling tier 2 in our group and the other guy always picked PHI first, so I took the Bears thinking they matched up the best) Neal was hard to stop with the PHI D (CHI O-Line is legit) and QB Eagles threw some picks to that good CHI 2ndary. For me, it's CHI every time in this one. Most people over-rate their own ability with QB Eagles IMO, I know I did myself in the past. Remember, your opponent will NEVER call run so his odds of calling your play are higher than usual. I don't think it's a bad matchup though if you are great at defending the Bears running game.
  15. I'm hoping I can make it again this year, it's a fun time for those of you on the fence. Just trying to decide when to tell my wife I'm going, might have to be the morning of.
  16. Come on Iowa, somebody car pool with Hawkeye! He needs to make it down for this one.
  17. Also, unless we get way more people than we expect to show up, we WILL do double elimination starting at the Final 4. So pool play, single elim til Final 4, then double elim to determine who wins the belt.
  18. There's 2 hotels within walking distance for around $100/night that are nice. The Holiday Inn isn't as new as the Hilton, but it's very clean. There's also a lot of new bars/restaurants right down in the Haymarket area there for you guys who are staying the night and want to explore the "star city". If you want prime rib, go to Misty's. It's within walking distance of the tourney venue.
  19. There were a few different reasons for the move. Lucky's has good food and has been good to us in the past, but this place has a lot more space and is right downtown. It's very easy to find (take downtown exit off of I-80 and you can't miss it) and there's a parking garage right across the street. I actually asked the parking attendant today and she said it'd be around $5 for 6 hours of parking. Knobbe and I went down there today for lunch to check it out further and the way the place is setup should work really well. We will have our own bartender and waitress for the entire tourney, they will let us set up the night before, and clean up the day after. They will also have a couple of big screens showing the NFL playoff game that day. They have a few projector screens, so maybe we can shoot the final few games on that so it's easier for everyone to see the action. Some of the proceeds are going to the Boomer Esiason Foundation this year which runs the Rimington Trophy (nation's best center) and we have been and still are attempting to maybe get an appearance by a former player from the Tecmo era to show up. Since this place is only a few blocks away from the awards ceremony that same night we thought it was worth a try. So far, it's not going very well as I just received a rejection email from Anthony Munoz who is one of the speaker's that night. This is the first year that we are trying to help them raise money though, so really we are just trying to establish a good relationship with them and get our foot in the door. There may be other reasons I'm forgetting, but the space factor and the willingness of them to work with us on setup/clean up were key. If we can get a former NFL guy to walk over and say "hi" also, it's just gravy. It's good to see we are getting closer to 40 guys, I think Knobbe is gonna make a late push to try and get it over 50. Looking forward to seeing you all next week!

  21. I just talked with Knobbe and just to clarify, those WR rules are old. We will be using the Madison rules this year, so no WR runs except for reverses. We just hadn't updated since they changed them last year. I'll post a list of guys signed up soon, we have 33 right now. I'm hoping for at least 40. Good to see the wave of Iowans signed up, just need a few more local regulars and some Wiscy guys and we'll have ourselves a tourney. It's not too late to sign up, come get some!!!
