  1. Hey Beef Juice, This is Adam from Cedar Falls. I helped put together the tournament that Spicolies has on the Saturday of the superbowl. I met you at last years madison tourney and we talked about your tournament and opening it up for anyone to play. I was interested in helping anyway I could. At least in getting the word out to the group of guys that come out for the other tourney and see if we could get up to 50 guys or so. Please email me if you would at [email protected] Thanks

Awesome. I sent you an email last week.

  2. I'm interested in playing, it'll give me a chance to see how I'd fair against some better talent. I wouldn't think you'd have a hard time filling your 32 you're looking for, but we have a small group of good guys in my area that enjoy playing, a couple are not good at all but enjoy playing (and drinking), that I could drag along with me if you want more

32 is our goal. If we somehow wind up with closer to 50 we'll certainly look at expanding it. I just want to make sure we don't extend ourselves too far with entries. If you want to bring more people that's fine. Even if some just come to hang out and watch that's cool too. We have a couple people that play every year that are probably there more for the drinking and socializing. Hell, one guy always competes under the name "2 & Out" if that gives you an idea.

  3. Will this be at a bar?

The last two years we've done it at Spicoli's Bar in Waterloo. It's way too early to bug them about it but I don't foresee any difficulties securing this location again. They've been awesome to work with and have provided a nice venue for the event. If for some reason that location doesn't work out we'll find another establishment to have it at.

Is it gonna be ran like the Madison tourney for drawing teams and such? I'm new to the larger Tecmo scene but this is only two hours away so would love to jump in and give it a whirl

For the most part we've taken our gameplay rules from Madison. However we've done team selection using a 5 tier system. Before each match one player will roll a die to determine which tier they get (6=roll again). Then a coin flip determines which person gets to pick their team first. Second person can opt for controller selection if they want. There's no limit on how many times you play a specific tier or team.

Each tier is comprised of 5 teams each. As of right now the Falcons, Colts and Pats aren't included and thus not available. After each tourney I go back and look at all the games played and based on the results will do slight tweaks to the tiers for the next year, usually moving a few teams up or down a level. For the most part the tier system has worked out well. The only real gripes about it come from folks that continually roll the lowest tier and wind up playing most games with the crappier teams.

The tournament has been double elimination every year. So even if you lose once you still have a shot at coming back and winning the finals (granted you have beat the other guy twice in a row). But with the hopes of getting a full 32 to participate we're considering doing a first round group stage with 8 groups of 4 players and then have the top 2 from each group move on to a single elimination field of 16.

  5. Had a blast at my first Tecmo Madison tourney. Going 2-2 my first year I feel pretty good with that performance. Special shout outs to everyone that played in Group E, especially Tony O., who managed to beat me with Al Del Greco recovering his own blocked kick and running it in for a TD. Talk about emotions going from top of the world to rock bottom in a matter of seconds.

Thanks to the crew that set up this tourney. I run a piddly tournament with around 20-some guys and that is a hassle, so trying to organize something as massive as this has to be a huge undertaking.

Thanks to my sponsor Pabst Blue Ribbon for supporting me and getting me shit-housed once I was bounced from competition.

Thanks to everyone I possibly annoyed while filming them with my iPhone. You were all good sports.

Lastly here are a couple photos I snagged. One is during the final match and another is Chet being interviewed afterwards.
