  1. Just a quick update. I plan to have formal registration up pretty soon. There's been some internal discussions over the date of the event. I was apparently a bit presumptuous with my scheduling before it could be discussed. In the end I really don't see the date changing at all. I'll post info about registration when I have it ready.
  2. 32 is our goal. If we somehow wind up with closer to 50 we'll certainly look at expanding it. I just want to make sure we don't extend ourselves too far with entries. If you want to bring more people that's fine. Even if some just come to hang out and watch that's cool too. We have a couple people that play every year that are probably there more for the drinking and socializing. Hell, one guy always competes under the name "2 & Out" if that gives you an idea.
  3. Yeah I met a guy in person a few months ago and somehow Sporcle came up and he said he played a bunch of my quizzes before. I haven't made very many new ones in recent months.
  4. That's TBD. In the past we asked money from people to cover a couple kegs worth of beer for the group to drink during the contest.
  5. The last two years we've done it at Spicoli's Bar in Waterloo. It's way too early to bug them about it but I don't foresee any difficulties securing this location again. They've been awesome to work with and have provided a nice venue for the event. If for some reason that location doesn't work out we'll find another establishment to have it at. For the most part we've taken our gameplay rules from Madison. However we've done team selection using a 5 tier system. Before each match one player will roll a die to determine which tier they get (6=roll again). Then a coin flip determines which person gets to pick their team first. Second person can opt for controller selection if they want. There's no limit on how many times you play a specific tier or team. Each tier is comprised of 5 teams each. As of right now the Falcons, Colts and Pats aren't included and thus not available. After each tourney I go back and look at all the games played and based on the results will do slight tweaks to the tiers for the next year, usually moving a few teams up or down a level. For the most part the tier system has worked out well. The only real gripes about it come from folks that continually roll the lowest tier and wind up playing most games with the crappier teams. The tournament has been double elimination every year. So even if you lose once you still have a shot at coming back and winning the finals (granted you have beat the other guy twice in a row). But with the hopes of getting a full 32 to participate we're considering doing a first round group stage with 8 groups of 4 players and then have the top 2 from each group move on to a single elimination field of 16.
  6. I made this quiz on Sporcle a few years ago. I thought I'd share it here. I'm sure some of you can ace it in your sleep. http://www.sporcle.com/games/ironsij0287/tsb_offense
  7. Awesome. The tourney has mainly been just friends and friends of friends so far, with around 20-24 participants. I would like to get 32 this year. If there's overwhelming response I'll see about expanding beyond that. Much like Madison, our location and time of the year can make the weather sketchy.

  9. Once again it'll be held at Spicoli's Bar & Grill in sunny Waterloo, IA Any and all info can be found at our web page at http://tecmotourney.blogspot.com/
  10. Sorry the photos are so huge. Right click on them and view in a new tab or window to see the full thing.
  11. Had a blast at my first Tecmo Madison tourney. Going 2-2 my first year I feel pretty good with that performance. Special shout outs to everyone that played in Group E, especially Tony O., who managed to beat me with Al Del Greco recovering his own blocked kick and running it in for a TD. Talk about emotions going from top of the world to rock bottom in a matter of seconds. Thanks to the crew that set up this tourney. I run a piddly tournament with around 20-some guys and that is a hassle, so trying to organize something as massive as this has to be a huge undertaking. Thanks to my sponsor Pabst Blue Ribbon for supporting me and getting me shit-housed once I was bounced from competition. Thanks to everyone I possibly annoyed while filming them with my iPhone. You were all good sports. Lastly here are a couple photos I snagged. One is during the final match and another is Chet being interviewed afterwards.
  12. So, at the tournament. I'm assuming this is a given but before any games are played we are going to make sure that any seasons on the game cartridge are reset so all the players' are set to AVERAGE and nobody is injured.
  13. Roughly what time does this thing start? I'm only a 90 minute drive away but want to figure out how early I'll need to head up there.
  14. Signed up yesterday. This will be my first Madison tourney. I'm looking forward to it and am just hoping I don't embarrass myself completely.
