  1. That's interesting you say that about the Chiefs. Last year they went 3rd to Rico (after Houston #1 and a ridiculous Washington at #2). Mort seemed very happy to land them at 6th (I'd probably take them 5th or 6th with these teams available), citing their balance. They definitely aren't the sexy pick, but if you're considering having to use them in multiple match-ups they're unlikely to get exposed and made one-dimensional offensively. But I'd feel better in this respect with RAI.

  5. This is a new level of tournament flaking for you. Normally you just RSVP and then back out within 24 hrs of the event. Props to playing half the event this time!
  6. You could most likely count myself and @modeezie in. We run a Detroit area tournament every winter/spring (last one was in march).
  7. Back then I was actually running the run 4 reverse but the one in run 3 is a better play, especially with the rest of the motion runs in there. But it sucks having to go without the standard run 3; worth it if you have a fast wr (63+) and a slower RB (44 or maybe even 50). Getting yards / scoring TDs with the reverse is great for laughs! I had a blast gaining Sam Graddy in WTF Retro by racking up the rushing yards.
  8. Ha! They were never bad as above! Sometimes a weird play is effective just because your opponent isn't used to defending it. Like the wildcat, though, they catch on quick and then it's back to the old standards. Being able to build a team and position your players makes some weird plays useable.
  9. Well against a man I would put the matching run 1 with your pass 2 and flea-flicker with the motion in pass 3. Then you could blow up pretty much any play. My buddy and I once played a game where it was Pats Colts and we chose each others' playbooks. He beat me 13-10 and he had 0 yards of offense. I don't remember exactly what happened except I fumbled in OT! Against the CPU, any pass play can be effective; this setup is pretty terrible since you're toast on any called play. The runs are pretty awful as well. Good job! I kind of wish on those three matching plays (pitch, reverse, pass 4) had the number above the runners head (who had the ball) delayed showing up a bit longer. Then they might have been a bit more effective.
  10. Is this for play against another human or against the CPU? Could be worse if you're playing a man opponent.

  12. @OL' Dirty Tecmo had a 28-0 loss as TB in a CIN-TB match this weekend. When I asked what happened he said Tampa let him down, but I didn't get the full story. Care to share the details? Did it poke a hole in your "good match-up" feeling or was the game pretty fluky?

  14. Fantastic weekend in Detroit; thanks mainly to a lot of hard work from O'Dell, with myself and a few others playing supporting cast, we were able to pull off a very fun event. Bringing it back downtown, specifically to the Detroit Beer Co., was a good move. We had a very nice space (the third floor of the joint to ourselves) and enough equipment / tech to keep things moving and people in the loop. Facilities could not have been better. As far as my day: I played OK during preliminary rounds, but nothing to hint that I might walk away the winner. My first game I lost to Moskwa 21-10 (14-10 with a fumble TD on a last play punt), then bounced back with a 21-0 win over a fellow from Cleveland and a 14-7 win over Jaimen Allison (thanks to the Allison Bros. for making it from Ontario) where I had to hang on late. Then I got smoked by Louis and finished with a pretty comfortable win over Ryan McKay (who called kind an outside the box matchup in NO/DAL). If I had lost that last game I would not have finished in the top 16. Winning that game got me up to #7 overall. This is where things broke my way. I got a pretty good draw as the #7, as the #2 was a local player who found us on Craig's List and showed up to our pre-Kumite event and had a 4-1 day beating Diaz soundly, Rico closely, and then getting waxed by Coco. Jaimen as my first opponent was no pushover, and Rico or Hendershot were the known guys I could face in the semis. The other half of the bracket was more stacked, IMO. Then the unthinkable happened and the Raiders fell to me as six teams were chosen ahead of them (SF, BUF, GIA banned to begin with). I think the order was HOU-WAS-KC-CHI-PHI-MIA-RAI. Plus the local guy took the Skins, so if I could get past Jaimen I'd at worst be playing against WAS. From here the games were not incredibly memorable. I got up big on Jaimen (CIN) with some stops and big plays. Round 2 I faced Nick D. with his Skins and won 24-7. Against Rico (KC) I got a stop right away and then built a 10 point lead. He kicked a FG with about 2:30 to go and got me to punt, but I was able to get an interception and took a safety to hang on 17-12. This game was the closest I played in single elimination. In the championship, I won the toss and took P1, Diaz took the Vikings. Had we not done the pre-determined final match-up of MIN-DET we would have played CHI-RAI, so still a very even game. We traded stops to open, then I got a TD, a stop, and hit a FG before the half. The second half opened with a sack-fumble-TD to all but seal the deal. Diaz got a TD at the end of the 3rd quarter to make it 20-7, but then a strange play happened. I broke a long run with Barry where his defender appeared to get chop blocked by the WR, but neither of us thought he touched one of my guys. When watching the playback the stream messes up there, so it must have been some "Contact"-esque alien intervention. Shortly after I punched it in. It was funny, because I was handling a lot of the mic duties all day and had been ribbing Diaz over the P.A., so it was funny we had to play in the final. Watching the stream games with the chat replay is hilarious. People made fun of my "tap face" (the face I make while tapping), which is ridiculous. I think everyone should have a candid shot of their tap face posted to the site. <-------------- dude, you're not going to win; you may as well stop making that face... The event on the whole was a blast. O'Dell put together a really sweet raffle portion that sent a lot of people home with some goodies. Thanks to Dave Murray for hooking us up with some Retron systems that allowed us to add a couple of stations. The venue and all their staff were lights out and we didn't get squeezed by ravenous Pistons fans this year. They had great setups for audio and visual and a nice WIFI connection for the stream. If we can have next year's tournament in the same place I'll be thrilled. Many thanks to all that made it out and those who watched on the stream (I hope you make tap face for your next drivers license photo). One month to go until Madison, the ultimate Tecmo party.
  15. The garage for the Detroit Opera house is very close to Detroit Beer Co. Also, there is a People Mover stop close by, so that is an option as well.

  18. So here's the idea. You have N guys playing, where (N-1) divides 28 evenly. So this could be played with 2, 3, 5, 8, 15, or 29 guys. (Any number would work, but this ensures a balanced schedule). Each TSB28 game has 28 rounds of Tecmo games (potentially). Every round you play one game. Player 1 chooses his team first, then player 2 chooses his team. You can be each team only once. A win gets you 1 point, a tie gets you 0.5 points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the 28 games is the winner. The game can also end when one player has first place locked up. For example, in a 2-player game, the first person to 14.5 points wins (but this wouldn't be the case with more people). If P2 can choose a team different than whoever P1 chose then he must. If he cannot, then the game is automatically a draw (this could only happen in the 28th round). So it's simple, games could be uploaded to TPC, and all you'd need is a shared Google Doc to keep track of points and who has chosen which teams. Some interesting things about this setup are... 1. The dynamic of team choosing would be new and some out-of-the-box matchups would get played. 2. The best player wouldn't necessarily be favored, since his opponents would try and give themselves a leg up (team advantage) when they're P2. Conversely, a weaker player would play more games with a better team and would receive sort of a built-in handicap. But it's dynamic, because if that player starts to lead in the standings the other players would start policing him. 3. Games could be immediately conceded to save time; say I'm playing somebody and he takes SF as P1, I could, say, take IND and concede if I felt like not burning one of my good squads in an attempt to beat SF. Of course it would take some commitment from the players, but that goes with anything beyond basic TPC. You could also choose a subset of the 28 teams for a shorter game. Anyone interested in trying this out let me know and I'll try and organize it!

If winner goes a) or b), then coin flip loser gets his choice of controller AND a ) his pick of team from the winner's matchup choice or b ) has to call the matchup, and then coin flip winner gets his choice of team. If winner goes c), then loser either calls the matchup (and winner gets his choice of team) or forces coin flip winner to call the matchup and loser gets his choice of team.

Since everyone would prefer to be P1, there are really two types of people: those that strongly prefer to call the match-up (I am in this camp), and those that strongly prefer to not call the match-up (I can't imagine any "upper-level" players in this camp, but maybe there are... and the rules shouldn't only cater to that group anyway). Under old Madison rules (and buck's equivalent system), a player that hates calling match-ups might get double-boned by "winning" the toss (they have to call the match-up and they might get stuck with P2 as well). A player that likes to call match-ups is guaranteed to get a match-up call or P1. I understand the complaints. Under the new system, a player that prefers to call the match-up automatically gets double-boned by losing the coin-flip (they don't get to call and they are P2). A player that hates calling match-ups gets a push regardless of who wins the toss. Here is my suggestion for a more equitable system where neither side gets double-boned. There are two choices: 1) choose your controller or 2) choose who has to pick the match-up (the person who doesn't pick the match-up will get their choice of team). Whoever wins the coin toss gets to choose one of these and the coin toss loser gets to make the other choice. Here, if I strongly prefer calling the match-up and I lose the toss, I at least get player 1 and my choice of team as a consolation (I get my 1st and 3rd ranked choices or 2nd and 3rd ranked choices). If I hate calling the match-up and lose the toss, even if homeboy forces to call the match-up I get P1 (again, I get 1st and 3rd or 2nd and 3rd ranked choices). Neither type of person would get stuck getting their 3rd choice only. Coin toss winner gets their pick of the litter and the loser gets the other two. The coin-toss winner could still get two of his three preferences if the players have different tastes. Nobody gets double-boned. At Kumite we used the new Madison rules (essentially), but we needed to save some time because our process of drawing ping-pong balls each round was lengthy. This year we are not drawing ping-pong balls and there will be a coin flip, so O'Dell and I will have to determine how it goes down. If this system has any glaring flaws that I missed please let me know!
