From a MAN v MAN standpoint, TSBIII has the fun factor because it is simple in its play, yet deceptively complex, due to the immense variation.  This includes anything from the well-timed spin move to the combinations of where the defensive players run to after a defensive call is made to the heat-seeking fullback that won't leave your MAN defender alone.  Also, there is great variety across opponents, so you cannot play everyone the same.  It seems like the game would eventually dry up, but as simple as the game is from a 'play' standpoint, new combinations and events arising keep it fresh.  Coaches learn your tendencies and you learn theirs so one must always evolve.

    Shlabotnik-

Awesome you are playing our ROMs!  That makes me excited to hear they are getting use.  I, along with Matt Bird (faulkner), make the rosters for our league (TLL).  We split the positions half and half.  I believe starting in the 1980 season I started doing the entire offense, while Matt does the defense (before that we each were responsible for positions on both sides of the ball).  We do put a lot of work and research into making the players.  So glad you are digging it.  Let me know if you'd like any other season ROMs.  We just started the 1982 season.

I haven't seen that glitch you speak of.  It was MAN v CPU, and not CPU v CPU, right?

I have a feeling that if you can accomplish even %50-%75 of the changes you're envisioning, this version will see a MAJOR spike in popularity. As a true bridge between NES Tecmo and Madden, I think it would be too tempting, even for the NES diehards...

DH, good job bro.  What you are involved in is historic, and takes a ton of dedication and hardwork.

James Baker: pump the brakes and get over yourself.  Your backtracking and highlighting of yourself isn't doing you any favors.  Just sit back, stop patting yourself on the back for doing nothing, and let DH and company work their magic.

#1- I don't think there is any speed boost by pressing "a", but sometimes I do that too for anticipation purposes

#2- The audibles are a bit limited as they correspond from pass to run or run to pass, and are direction specific.  Meaning, if you pick "up and a" (a run play) and complete the audible, you will audible to the corresponding pass play, "up and b", and visa versa.

#3- Punting can be tricky, and I actually like that about the game.  There is a delay on the meter, so you have to anticipate.  You only need to hit the button once, but the meter keeps going a few notches after you hit it, so thus the needed anticipation.

#4- I don't find the "lob" pass to be much of an advantage.  The only* instance it might be is toward the end of a half where you only have time for one play but not enough time to let your WR get far enough.  The lob will allow a WR to get further downfield (b/c it is slower), thus allowing you to actually have a shot at a last second CC TD.  Although this only comes in if you don't have enough time to let WRs get far enough downfield.  * Really, the major advantage of the lob pass is that is it comical to watch unfold, so it provides a break in the tense action (it is a Tecmo version of comic relief if you will)

CheapCatch reacted to TecSpectre in TSB III Top 20s By Position - Running Backs
The biggest factor for HP in TSB3 is that HP actually matters. So it doesn't matter how fast your hit the A button to shake a tackle, if your HP is 13 and your opponent is 31+. Generally, you need to be within 1 bump in HP in order for the A button to really factor.

There are times when it seems the computer gets bonuses. I've seen 50hp guys solo tackle 75hp guys when the 50hp guy is comp controlled.

There are other instances. I've seen 63hp, man controlled LBs, toss 75+ HP fullbacks to the ground, solo, without any real grapple happening... but this has only occurred when behind the line of scrimmage.

Knobbe, as to the drag thing. I believe there is a set speed for the drag. Because some guys, when they drag, get faster... and others get slower. The biggest issue in determining these factors is that I have always found that created players, modded players, seem to play differently than base guys in the game. This might be due to hidden factors in the game, I don't know.

However, the base design of the game is that fullbacks have the HP, running backs have the MS... and there are a few players that bridge the gap (Jerome Bettis, Byron Morris, Barry Foster, Natrone Means)

CheapCatch reacted to deadfaulkner in TSB III Top 20s By Position - Running Backs
I was thinking about the earlier forum thread started by Spectre about the best TSB III teams, and I thought we might break it down further by debating the top players by each position.  Running backs seem like a good place to start.  For one, they might be the most important players on the offense, though that's certainly debatable.  Also, it's one of the more difficult positions to rank, since there are many different styles of running backs that can be effective - pure speed guys like Barry Sanders, power guys like Rod "the Lesser God" Bernstine, and spinny-jumpy guys like Eric Metcalf.

I revisited my rankings, which try to put players on a 100-point scale (a la Madden).  I won't bother getting too technical, but I rate guys in four areas: Speed, Elusiveness, Power, and Hands, and I create my rankings based on those.  From there, I use a slightly complicated formula to derive an overall rating.

I should note that the rating I give is geared toward MAN-MAN play.  I'm no expert in playing the COM, but my gut feeling is that against the computer, pure speed is a little more important than elusiveness and power, while that's not quite as true against a human.  Again, that's just my gut feeling.

Also, my rankings don't take into account the playbook of the offense in which the guy plays, since our league allows full playbook editing.  So, with a crappy playbook, some of these guys might not be as effective.

Here are the top 20 TSB III backs according to those rankings:

FirstN LastN           City                Sp       El        Pw      Ha     rate

    Emmitt Smith           Dallas             93.0    93.0    70.0    82.0    96.5

If we broaden it to include all skill-position players (including WRs and TEs), a few new names pop up:

FirstN LastN           City              Sp       El        Pw     Ha       rate

    Ben Coates            New Engl       74.0    55.0    87.0    72.0    78.3

    Mel Gray                 Houston          81.0    91.0    45.0    76.0    76.7

    Rashaan Salaam    Chicago          74.0    78.0    70.0    76.0    76.6

In our old TSB III leagues, Ismail was always slotted in at RB for the Raiders; the other four weren't often put in the backfield because they were too valuable as pass receivers (though I did have New England, and I probably should have used Coates in hindsight).

So, what do you think?  Does this jive with your experience of these players?  What stars have you found that don't show up on this list?  Is there someone here that shouldn't be?

I'll keep these threads going, and eventually I'll attach my full rankings - I'm still fiddling with the other positions to find numbers that I like.

CheapCatch got a reaction from DeBerg in Who IS the best team in TSB3?
I respect your opinion DeBerg, but I bet if you look at sheer ATT numbers for RBs across the league, the Packers will have the worst stable of running backs.  Without looking, I am boldly claiming they have the worst run game in the entirety of TSB III.  And if that is too strong, I will say at the most they are not above the bottom five.

The defense speaks for itself:  Reggie White is a beast as everyone knows, but again, I bet the Packer LBs are Top 5 worst in the league, if not the worst.  Maybe someone like the Saints has worse LBs.  Butler is a poor man's Atwater as DF mentioned.  The secondary overall is so weak.  The DEN offense, with just Miller alone, would pick that secondary apart in a hurry.

well, this is fun anyway....nice to revisit TSB three, OG

Many of the Tecmo Legacy League's games are streamed live on twitch.tv, for anyone interested.  Often, the games are fairly impromptu; when we notice a scheduled opponent online, we'll decide to play a game. The best way to follow is on our Twitter feed, which sends out notifications each time we start a broadcast: @tecmolegacy.  But sometimes we arrange games in advance, and I'll use this forum to let people know when those games are happening.

WIth MS being the godstat for rbs in this game,  I guess they couldn't just give him 63-75 like they did Bo, Thurman and Barry who were actually having 100 ypg seasons.   Since he never really had a great season as a RB, mainly just as a return man.
