Just a picture example of how far I've come with reverse engineering the tecmo into readable source. Basically going from meaningless variables/labels into something readable.

Thanks. Added to download section and updated threads.

Also, @Maynard_G_Krebs & @buck put in a ton of work on this ROM too. They also deserve the praise. Thanks, gentlemen.

GameplayLoop got a reaction from DFM in GUIDE: New to TecmoBowl.org? [Read me!]
Welcome to TecmoBowl.org: the greatest place on Earth. Ever.

When I asked site owner, Knobbe, to describe why he chose to create TecmoBowl.org in five words or less, he answered, "To hack Tecmo Super Bowl." So it was, and hacked it has been. TecmoBowl.org has it all!

Go on and give yourself a pat on the back, because if you're reading this, you should know that you've stumbled upon both the largest community-driven Website and Tecmo Super Bowl hacking documentation resource on the Internet. Period. Above all else, everyone here wants to enjoy Tecmo Super Bowl for what it is, one of life's pleasures. So relax, enjoy your visit, and congratulations; you've found the Holy Grail of Tecmo Super Bowl.

    TecmoBowl.org Forum Content (w/ link & description):

You might be saying to your self, "There's so much to read about! What do I start with?" Well, that would depend on your interests...

    1. First thing's first: read up on any practical piece of information that you think will help guide your journey in the Getting Started pinned threads of the TecmoBowl.org forum. Something tells us that you've already begun.

    2. Tecmo Super Bowl Game Forums: Oh-my-god, you're so excited--we know, we get it: other people actually want to spend their time keeping conversation about the classic Tecmo Super Bowl franchise alive. Wanna talk about the old days of Bo Jackson, QB Eagles, and The Nigerian Nightmare? Got an axe to grind about the Playstation and/or hand-held versions? Looking for news and/or information about the potential of an upcoming release? This is the all-purpose retro and contemporary Tecmo Super Bowl general discussion forum headquarters for you, fan.

    3. Live Tournaments: For those looking to find or post a notice about a live tournament or meetup. And, yes, there are a ton of people looking to create a live tournament. Generally, these events will have specific rulesets in place during play that have been acquired from widely-regarded leagues across the United States and beyond. Typically, larger events are hosted in a venue that legally sells alcohol and food, such as hotels, bowling alleys, and etc. event spaces. Check the Tecmo Players Map, and maybe you can find someone(s) near you who wants to kick your ass in a game of TSB. If you can find enough people, hopefully you can setup your own regional tournament or league!

    4. Online Leagues/Tournaments/Pick-up Games: If you weren't aware that this was possible, your head must be exploding. Yes, you can play Tecmo Super Bowl online against human opponents. Getting setup can be difficult for first-timers, but we're all first-timers at some point, right? If you have a question, or if you're looking to explore how far to take your interest of playing TSB online, you're going to want to check this forum out. Feel free to ask for help! There are plenty of TecmoBowl.org members who would be happy to oblige.

    5. Download Custom TSB Game Files (ROMs) and/or Game Management/Editing Programs: If you're looking to play custom Tecmo Super Bowl ROMs created by community members just like yourself, then this is the place for you. Here's where you'll find our forum dedicated to uploading/downloading game ROM files, Tecmo Super Bowl hacking information, "How-To" answer threads, user-made TSB editing and game management programs, and all sorts of information on playing Tecmo Super Bowl using your PC, MAC, new and old game console, hand-held, and smart phone!

    6. The Off-Topic Forum: If you just want to chill out and write about whatever. Your topic could be about NFL football, or pirates, or the latest movie release, et al. The only requirement is that you not be a douche. If you're the kind of person who is a douche at heart, that's O.K., we're not here to judge; just be smart about it. Generally, inflammatory rhetoric or just common douchery is frowned upon. TSB fans come in all ages, and all ages are welcome, but TecmoBowl.org is an adult-centric forum.

    7. TecmoBowl.org Feedback: Have a question or comment about the Website? Maybe an idea to throw our way? Looking to help out somehow? Have a notion on how to organize the forum content with more precision? Got an idea for the TecmoBowl.org homepage? Drop us a line. No idea is irrelevant and all opinions are welcomed!

And finally, we'd like to take a moment to point you to some of our favorite forum topics located across multiple boards...

Tourney Format: Format will likely be double elimination.  All rookie players will be randomly assigned another rookie player and all tournament veterans assigned a tournament vet for the first round as space permits. All winners of first round matchup will be randomly assigned another winner of a first round matchup (same for loser’s bracket). Each round will be randomly assigned until only one Champion remains!

Prizes: Cash prizes will be awarded to top three participants. All participants will be eligible to win a raffle prize just for entering.  Top first time player will receive one free future entry into any Northeast Tecmo Tournament!
Equipment: We need Nintendos, TVs, Controllers, Carts! If you are able to bring any of these in working condition, please let us know what you can bring and how many of each. How to Register: Register here:  https://smash.gg/tournament/long-island-retro-gaming-expo/register

Team Selection for Each Matchup: A coin will be flipped before each game. The coin-flip winner will choose the matchup (i.e. the two teams). The coin-flip loser then selects either (a) one of the two teams or (b) his preferred controller. If the coin-flip loser selects his preferred controller, the coin-flip winner selects a team first.
Note about Matchups: The coin-flip winner can only select a particular matchup once throughout the entire tournament. For instance, if Player A wins the toss and selects Rams-Broncos, Player A cannot call that exact matchup for the rest of the tournament. Player B, however, is free to select that matchup later in the tournament.

    Rules:
Equipment Failure: If equipment fails during the game, games will be replayed from the start unless it is halftime. After halftime, scores are taken from the half and another half is played. Scores from each half are added together to form final score. Ties are allowed in pool play.  If the game is tied in elimination play, then a new game is started with the first person to score being the winner.  Any malfunction caused by human error may result in an automatic forfeit due to the discretion of the tournament organizers.
Onside Kicks: Onside Kicks are okay anytime (aka, "at your own risk").
Lurching: Lurching is not allowed (dive tackling over the line of scrimmage with a DL). DL use is allowed, but you must either go outside the Offensive Tackle or grapple an OL to rush.
WR/TE at RB: Running the ball with a WR or TE from the RB position is prohibited.  WRs or TEs are allowed to run the ball on reverses.

Questions: Feel free to post questions about the tournament below or you can direct them to NYTecmo at tecmobowl.org

GameplayLoop got a reaction from Tunnelrunner in CPU Logic for Play Selection?
This question is directed at the coding gurus (or anyone who might have information about the subject):

What do we know about how the CPU selects offensive and defensive plays? Are these bytes editable to streamline the logic to which the CPU selects offensive / defensive plays? Is it based purely on what offensive / defensive pattern the player selects, or is it situational?

    [Example]

I've been scanning over my knowledge base and trying to pinpoint any future edits I'm still interested to make for Tecmo Super Coach. This is the last 'topic of interest' that I know nothing about, and could go a long way into making playing the computer more interesting / challenging.

    Bueno for any education provided.

Congratulations to Shawn S. @stalltalk for his impressive win in this year's New York City Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament. He led the Bucs to a 17-3 win over Brian R. @Bad Moon Rison in the final. Jim T. @powerade took down Louis B. @red98sethuthut in the third-place game.

We were unable to stream from the event this year, but @suicideking81 recorded a lot of games and is planning to make those available soon, so look for that forthcoming.

Here is an interview I did with the champ and runner-up:

I did a few other interviews throughout the day that I'll follow up with as I get them uploaded.

Here also is the final bracket:

Thanks to everyone who participated, both those fellow NYers who joined us and those who traveled to be with us. Thanks to Brian, Ryan K. @hoigaard, and everyone else who put in the work to make this event so much fun. And lastly, thanks to Raven's Head Public House (http://www.ravensheadpublichouse.com/) for both saving our butts at the last minute and for providing a great new venue for our event.

All these years messing with TSB, making ROMs, participating in front and behind the curtain of TB-org, and never once going to a tournament? Ridiculous. I'm pumped to end that streak in NYC!

    To All Participants:

Our location for this year's tournament has changed!  If you have already signed up, you should have received an e-mail already.  Here is the new location:

Location: Raven's Head Public House, 3804 Broadway, Astoria, NY 11103
(Approx. 15 minutes from Midtown Manhattan, Uptown R train to Steinway Street in Queens)
    Website: http://www.ravensheadpublichouse.com/

This should not affect anyone's travel plans as the new venue is only 5 blocks away.  We will have our own private room in "The Attic."

I'll be getting groups out in the next couple of days!  If you have not signed up, please do so!  The field this year is currently just under 30.  If you are traveling with someone, let me know who so I don't place you guys in the same group.
