  1. Patriots are bad not terrible, although they're one of my favorite teams to play with in a crappy team vs crappy team matchup. I always put Marv Cook at RB, his backup Sievers isn't bad. I don't know how you can ever say Grogan prevents picks... but Wilson is one of the better backups in the league. The longbombs are really your only way to score against better teams and Wilson's good at that. I think of them as the poor man's Tampa Bay. Good CB on defense (Lippett instead of Haddix), a QB with decent pass control but slow pass speed, and a go-to WR (Carrier and Fryar), and that's really all they have going for them. I don't think the Packers are worse than the Colts though. Majkowski to Sharpe is one of the best connections in the game and Nelson/Harris or even Noble are good MAN defenders. In my opinion every team in the league has at least something going for it except the Colts (maaaybe a passing game but it's not enough). If I had to I'd put Browns 2nd worst but even they can be made good by an experienced player.
  2. I had a copy many years ago when I was a young 'un and lost it after moving a couple of times , then a while ago I got a copy off of Ebay for $4 including shipping and everything (dream deal). I've been trying to get another copy (1 for season mode, 1 for man vs man) but it sells for at least $12 now and usually more. Sure that's not much for the best game ever made, but that $4 deal I got has spoiled me.
  3. So my friend and I were playing Tecmo tonight and after our 5th or 6th game of 49ers vs Giants trying to prove who's best (see other post) we decide to finally switch it up and play Green Bay (me) vs Washington (him). We both know the ins and outs of the game and have a ton of experience against each other so we both expected him to win as he had the better team. I effectively use Sharpe and Nelson and Majkowski's 25 MS and play a good solid game. Final result: 14-7 Green Bay. "That was a fluke" he says and challenges me to a rematch. So we play again and by half time I'm up once again 14-6. I had a pair of longbombs to Sterling Sharpe and he had two FGs. I scored both TDs on fake plays; I have two running plays that go down on the two left slots and a pass play that starts off like those two and then has Sharpe going long and two other receivers going short. Then I can either scramble, pass short, or pass to Sharpe when he's open or in one on one coverage. It worked quite well. Nelson meanwhile was stuffing the run and even doing a good job in pass coverage. "He's hungry for an interception," I said every time he broke up a pass. The second half starts and I start with the ball. On the first or second play I call a pass play and, seeing that nothing else is open, throw a long bomb to Sharpe in double coverage in hope that he will jump for it. The super jump sequence happens and Sharpe comes down with it. One of the defenders was my opponent and he wrapped me up and we went into a button mashing battle. The other defender ran up and bounced off of us. I emerged the victor of the battle and ran the rest of the way for another touchdown. On his next drive, he manages to score a touchdown. From here on out everything becomes wacky (Sharpe's domination I figured wasn't too extraordinary). First I block the extra point with Tim Harris; in what has been easily over two hundred games that we've played against each other I've seen an XP get blocked by anybody but LT, and even then that was rare. He hit A as fast as he could but Harris must've been in excellent and managed to get it. On my kickoff return with the score at 28-12, I fumble and for a second am afraid I might let him back in the game. It bounces around a bunch of Redskins until finally Sharpe picks it up and runs it back the rest of the way for another TD, 35-12. Now in the 4th quarter without much time left, my friend starts to get desperate and rely on longbombs. After a few failed attempts, he throws a pass in single coverage with Mark Lee vs Gary Clark and Lee, one of the worst CBs in the league, intercepts it! I get within the 20 with some run plays and then make a deal with my friend. I call a play that has Sharpe stationary in the end zone, and he calls a different play with a promise from me that I will throw to Sharpe no matter how covered he is. I call the play and Sharpe is standing there covered by Darrell Green, Martin Mayhew, and some other guy. I throw the ball anyways and Sharpe comes up with it, his 6th TD of the game 42-12. With under a minute on the clock my friend continues throwing long bombs. On the last play of the game he chucks a 60 or 70 yard pass to Gary Clark again who is covered by Mark Murphy and Bob Nelson (me). The interception music plays and I anxiously wait to see who had the ball... it was Nelson! I finished the game up 42-12 with Majkowski 5-5 with 278 yards and 5 TDs. Sterling Sharpe 278 yards and 5 TDs with a 90+ yard fumble return. Bob Nelson and Mark Lee both with an interception. Tim Harris with a blocked XP. Surely the strangest game I will ever play.
  4. I think Eagles definitely depend on how well you can use QB Eagles and how well your opponent can adjust to him. Some times the Eagles are unstoppable, but in my experience nothing is unstoppable as a team overwhelmed with talent. Plus although the defense isn't terrible, the secondary does suck and Reggie White/Jerome Brown just aren't the same as the Fulchers and Taylors and Lotts in the league. As for the Bears, yes sometimes they're very good but come on they seriously don't have a passing game at all. Even if you put in Tomczak, you're only like 50/50 to complete a pass to wide open receivers and a smart opponent will know how to stop you from rushing every time for first downs. I do admit they are a great team, against lesser offenses they will get a shutout and against lesser defenses they will run all over the place. But I can't consider the team to be the BEST team in the league. PS: Charles Haley is just as strong and faster than Seth Joyner, so I don't see the problem in using him. Why you'd pass up on Ronnie Lott though is beyond me.
  5. I looked back through the message board to see if there were any topics on this but I haven't seen any so I figured I'd start off of a discussion. Which team do you think is the best in TSB (for man to man play)? My college roommate and I disagree on which team is the best so I want to get a few second opinions. I think the 49ers are the best team in the league; they're amazing on both offense and defense. They have the best passing QB in the league, the best receiver in the league (who becomes Barry Sanders-like if you use him at RB), one of the best defenders in the league, and a number of other good players on defense for support. Their O-line is one of the best in the league so blocking is top-notch. The kicker is pretty good and the punter sucks but who cares, so long as you max out the punt you can place the ball within the 20 most of the time. My roommate thinks the Giants are the best team in the league. Disgusting linebackers make for a great defense and LT is the best run stopper in the league. The two-pronged running attack is brutal at times and the passing attack features a pretty good QB and speedy WRs who will make you pay for calling running plays too much. Plus the special teams unit is pretty good, Landeta is unreal and LT makes kicking FGs so fucking hard. I think despite all this that the 49ers are a better team, and even think that you could make a case for the Oilers being better. When you put Drew Hill ar RB they become amazing as I'm sure most of you know. I've been winning most of the games with 49ers against the Giants but we've only played a few and he refuses to change his mind. So anyway, which team do you think is the best? Or is there another team that comes to mind?
  6. If you kick when you're just past your own 35, you are not kicking a 74 1/2 yard field goal but rather an 80 yard field goal. The ball is snapped back to about the 30, and the kicker has the kick the ball through the goal posts which are 10 yards past the goal line. 20 to get to half field + 50 to get to the goal line + 10 to goal posts means you'd be kicking an unheard of 80 yards. I've personally ever been able to kick more than 70 yard field goals, even with Lowery and Christie. As a general rule of thumb I consider myself within range if I am past the 50 yard line. With especially good kickers I will kick if i have the ball a couple of yards behind the 50, but any further than that and I kick short.
  7. Not much you can do with 75 pass speed if your PC is 19. I use Strom over Brister every time I play with the steelers assuming they're in equal condition, not only can Strom throw the longball well but he won't get picked off anytime a defender is anywhere near the ball. In my opinion pass speed is not nearly as important in season mode games as it is in MAN vs MAN games (and even then i might choose Strom instead).
  8. Dave Meggett does not have 69 MS, maybe you're thinking of Barry Sanders. In the game Meggett has 56 MS which, as you said, is not too high for him. Also since the Giants were superbowl champions the year Tecmo came out I think the makers of the game had to embelish the ratings of the reigning champs just a little, which is why Otis Anderson and David Meggett both have good speed. Remember, MS doesn't reflect how fast players actually are, but rather how effective they are. I'm sure some of the backups in Tecmo were faster than some of the elite backs in real life, but you need to give the better backs better MS regardless of how fast they actually are because MS determines how effective an RB is. Think of MS as more of an "overall" rating than a rating determing speed for running backs.
  9. I don't think I've ever heard of these bugs before, has anybody else ever seen this happen? 1. If you try to sack the QB on a pass play and start grappling with him and then lose the grapple in one way or another (either you don't hit A or a blocker comes by and helps) then the QB will emerge facing the wrong direction and will not move or pass the ball until he is swarmed by other defenders. 2. On reverse plays, if you start grappling with the ball carrier right before he tosses the ball off one last time, he will still be able to lateral the ball (although you won't see it happen). I was grappling with this one guy on a reverse play and the WR who was supposed to get the ball ran by him and all of a sudden he had it and broke a huge gain. Normally you're supposed to see the ball get thrown back from one guy to the other on that play, but that time it magically teleported.
  10. I agree with T-bob, I really doubt the creators of the game intended the NTD to be used and the fact that you can do it seems like a glitch. Also timing isn't needed to do the nose tackle dive, all you do is move diagonally as soon as the snap starts while hitting B repeatedly. Eventually you will dive for the quarterback and when you do you will sack him every time. It takes very little skill and winning in Tecmo should be decided by skill not cheap moves. Rather than resort to using the NTD constantly and base your entire offense around avoiding it if your opponent uses it, play Tecmo the way it was meant to be played. Trust me it is much more fun.
  11. i see what you guys mean but I still don't think he merits such a bad pass control rating. maybe the developers meant to make up for his weak PC by giving him a high accuracy of pass, although then it turned out accuracy of pass does nothing so Elway never benefited from it.
  12. In the past I used the nose tackle dive all the time. I did it against the computer and I did it against friends (naturally they did it back). But one day we decided the nose tackle was kinda cheap so we stopped doing it for a while and had to look for other players on defense. All of a sudden all these fascinating non-shotgun pass plays became possibilites and running up the middle wasn't an automatic 2 yard loss. We discovered defensive greats like Haddix, Fulcher, and Woodson and learned how to play defense with LBs and DBs instead of NTs all the time. This made Tecmo a much more enjoyable experience for everybody and defense became more dependent on skill and focus than on jamming the B button. In fact, I'd probably say that my defense is more effective now without the NT dive than it was with it, because with a dominant defensive player I can play some really great defense. I'm glad to say I've stopped using nose tackle dive and I've never looked back. NT Dive doesn't require any skill, doesn't give the offense a chance, and it doesn't reflect the actual ability of your Nose Tackle at all, so why not play some real defense? PS: Alright so maaaaybe I use NT dive (it's just easier) from time to time against the computer but never against friends
  13. Why does Elway suck so much in Tecmo? Whenever I play against a friend using a team with an interception machine (woodson, fulcher, haddix, johnson, carrier) he destroys me whenever I try to pass. I'm starting to wonder if it'd be better to simply use his backup who lacks the MS and passing speed but at least has a little better pass control, considering the importance placed on PC. I'm thinking he might limit turnovers while I use my running game for most of the offense. Also can anybody explain why Tecmo might have made Elway so bad? I mean he led his team to two superbowls at that point and was already considered a great player and likely hall of famer at that point wasn't he? If he had PC of at least 50 Denver would be a far better team.
