What is the best playbook to make the CPU difficult to play against? Original plays only please, no hacks.

I noticed that the playbooks on the current base (one from download link in the first post) are mixed up. For example the QB bootleg run that’s normally in slot 4 is now in slot 2.
Is there a version where the plays are in their original slots? I saw a few posts up with some updates to helmets and names etc, and that version seems to have correct plays in slots.
Also is there a list of what hacks are on this rom (in original post link)? (Tapmeter, flicker, PA/PC, etc.)?
I didn't even see this comment before I made mine, so as of April back when I commented this was still in the "base" rom. I just went back and found cxrom's actual original 32-team rom and put in the NFC West fixes, the player 2 fix, and the TE fix myself with no other changes. I haven't tried downloading a rom from the first post here since April, so I don't know, maybe someone fixed it between then and now, but no one ever replied to my comment.

Thanks a lot. This works. I greatly appreciate it. a Bug here and there does not bother me but it s good you are working on it I am just thankful You had one. The bug with the clock the rom locked up on me when I went in there. i reset left the clock a lone the rom was acting fine.
Thanks again for this.
Yeah the clock thing is annoying. I didn't make the rom, I just took one that was originally from 2007 I think and edited rosters and ratings for 2002. If I knew how, I would remove the clock option entirely.

This threads dispels several huge misconceptions that we had for over a decade. It should really be pinned.

I'd be interested in joining this if you have room for more owners.

Here's the 2002 32-team rom I just did. I'm still working on the sim ratings, so if you play a season expect to see some weird stats and team records, but player ratings and rosters are good, and all the teams are in the right place. The only glitch I know of is there's an option to change the time, but it sets it a minute lower than the time you pick. If you want 5 minutes per quarter like on the original, you have to set it to 6 mins. This rom lets you change playbooks in the middle of a game, but it's the original plays and there's really no other hacks.

@malferds found out awhile back that the ratings aren't team offense and team defense.
Its team rush defense and team pass defense.
Just seeing this for the first time. No wonder the results are always so messed up. Fuck.

You also might have to set the 4-WR teams to the all star team id unless you actually have 3 4WR teams.
Oh right. I want to use the pro bowl teams, also, though. I tried just putting in a random non-team number at the locations. I used 30, and that set the teams back to normal. Would you anticipate that affecting anything else? It seems okay so far, but I haven't tried playing games yet.

@BO FB Offtackle Left yes refer to the second post in the thread . I just edited pampozos post because it was missing the 3WR team position abbreviation information.
You have to hand edit the values manually at 0x31007 and 0x3100E
For some reason on the original rom. San Diego is given a a 3WR player change screen but not for the position abbreviations. Possibly intentional...possibly a mistake who knows.
Thank you! Now I get it. That's why the Raiders are correct, they are 0E on this rom. Also just noticed that the Giants are 11 so they had the position swaps. I just changed that 11 to 19 for the Saints and now everything is right. I don't know what I would have done if I had more than 2 teams, I guess one of them would be wrong, but this works out perfectly.
You wrote 0x3100E here, by the way, it's 0x3100B. But thank you so much.
The Chargers were confusing in real life. It looks like they mostly used a 2-TE set. Bernstine was a backup RB who rushed for over 500 yards. If I remade the original I would probably just give them a standard formation and raise Bernstine's MS to 38. I have no idea why Early has a running play, he didn't carry the ball at all in 1990.

If you just have the two 3wr teams than its just a matter of changing the team ids.
Are you talking about the info in this thread? Because this appears to just be for the original 28-team rom. The hex locations for the 32-team rom I am using are different, and I have no idea how to find them, except for the one place I already said that just changes formations and not positions. Do you know what all the correct hex locations are to do the things talked about in this thread?

I know whats going on now....there is a different check for the team formation setup for drawing the player position abbreviations. (RB,WR,TE). It is currently still set up like the original check for the 3 4WR teams HOU, DET, ATL (team ids 07, 14, 1B) and the 3Wr teams WAS,PHX (team ids 0E,11).
Okay, I sort of understand that, but how do I fix it?

I was only asking you to post to see what the issue with the 3wr saints was....
lol sorry, I know, thanks, but I'm almost done so I figured I might as well finish it, but I'll post it here now. I also wanted to make sure I wasn't changing any other formations in case that affected it. I looked it over, and I'm not. Just the Raiders and the Saints have the 3 WRs. FYI, the hex location of the offensive formations on this rom begins at x3f940, in case that's helpful. Here it is:

Will do, I'm still working on the NFC West, then the rom is done. It should just be a few more days.

Is this the case on the default 32 team rom or a different rom?
One way to reverse engineer the location is to search for the pattern.
0 = 2rb-2wr-1te,
1 = 1rb-4-wr-0te
2 = 1rb -3wr-1te
Then you go down the line in the AFC first on your rom and make a note of which teams currently have which formations and then do a hex search with those values.
Let's say for the first 8 teams only Cincy has a non-1-2-2 formation and theirs is 3 wrs
The pattern to search for would be 00002000. The more teams you use for a pattern to search, the easier it will be to find. Also I believe the Pro Bowl formations are listed before the NFC West
I'm only finding the formations with that method. I'm not having a problem changing the formations, that works fine using Tool. When I look in a hex editor, all the 2RB-2WR-1TE teams are 00 except the two I changed to 1RB-3WR-1TE are 02. That's all good. It's just for some reason when I changed the Saints to 1RB-3WR-1TE, the player data screen for the WR in the RB2 slot is still listed as a RB. Here are screenshots of what I'm talking about:
This is the rom I used before I made any changes:

OF FORMATIONS SETUP
Each Team has an Offensive formation depending on the position of their BACKS on the field:
3 WR: 1 Rb / 3 Wrs / 1 TE - (Chargers, Redskins, Cardinals)
4 WR: 1 Rb / 4 Wrs - (Oilers, Lions, Falcons)
PRO: 2 Rbs/ 2 Wrs / 1 TE - (All of the rest)Chargers x21647 (0C)*
Redskins x2164B (0E)*
Cardinals x2164F (11)* *Changing to a differtent Team's number at this offset, will make this team have a 3 WR formation ( team 00=BUF, 1B=ATL)Oilers x21654, x30FFB (07)**
Lions x21658, x30FFF (14)**
Falcons x2165C, x31003 (1B)** *Changing to a differtent Team's number at these offsets, will make this team have a 4 WR formation ( team 00=BUF, 1B=ATL)OR YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE EVERY TEAM by entering the code provided by jstout:
At x21642 input: 8AA66EBCD09FAA4C5096 * (this will redirect to TEAMS' FORMATION at x21FE0)
At x21FE0 it will be the new FORMATION SETUP for the Teams in BUF-ATL order. (00=pro, 01=4wr, 02=3wr-1te) Here you have to input 28 values (+ 2 for All-PROs)At x30FF8 input: 8AA66EBC709EAAC001F011C002F0134CFE8F * (this will redirect to x31E80, where PLAYERS' POSITION (WR,RB,TE) is assigned for the NEW FORMATION )
At x31E80 it will assign the CORRECT position for each new FORMATION SETUP. BUF-ATL order. (00=pro, 01=4wr, 02=3wr-1te).Here you also have to input 28 values (+ 2 for All-PROs)
This is still only for 28-team roms, correct? Does anyone know what the offsets are for a 32-team rom?

I've been catching up on Tecmo stuff this year after being inactive since... well, I guess 2013 at least. I'm excited to see you can edit Pro Bowl rosters in Tool now. I know I figured out how to do it with hex a long time ago, because my old NCAA rom has edited rosters, and I even changed "Pro Bowl" to "All Amer." But I've completely forgotten how I did all that. And that was on a 28-team rom, also. This will make things much simpler.
I'm glad you figured out the team formation fix, as well. I'll have to check that out and experiment with it. Thanks for all the updates, @BAD_ALI'm still having the same issue with 1RB-3WR-1TE formations. Some teams it correctly shows the receiver in the RB2 slot as a WR on the player page, but some it shows him as a RB. The formation is correct, so it's not that big of a deal. To be more specific, on a 32-team rom I'm doing, it shows correctly for the receiver on the Raiders in the AFC West, but not for the receiver on the Saints in the NFC South.

There is no point to this. It's already set so that 50rs=6ms, which means 100rs=56ms. If you want your rs to be 13ms, you set it to 56. If you want it to be 25, you set it to 69. If you want it to be 56, you set it to 100. All the values you could need are already there, no hacking required.

Out of curiosity I counted, because I came to the end of the faces I had prepared, and I made 30 separate "Face of the Day" posts. I could probably come up with something to say about pretty much every Tecmo face, and I may change my mind and post again tomorrow, but that seems like a good place to stop.
If there are any faces you like that I missed, or if you just want to keep this going, feel free to add to it. Thanks for following along.

The Sneer
sneer /snir/ noun
1. a contemptuous or mocking smile, remark, or tone.
Yes, that is Jack Trudeau at the Playboy Mansion while he was at the U. of Illinois in 1983. Or 1984. It was New Year's. Check out the story: https://www.thesportsbank.net/illinois-illini/playboy-mansion-party-illini-football/. You're welcome. And that is Paul Skansi in... a denim ad? I have no fucking idea. And Boomer looking like Gary Busey over here:

You know, there are a lot of downright hysterical errors in this video game, but there are moments when I think the programmers were mystical prophets who existed out of time. What a great expression for these three.

Face=0xba is similar to several other faces, but there are a couple of details that make it a little unique. It looks like slight tweaks were made to look like a specific player. It's one of the few faces with that receding hairline, and it has a different stache and mouth than similar faces. They really seem to have had an eye for detail on this one. There's only one problem. This face is not used for anyone in the game! Why go through the trouble of making such a unique face, only to not use it? Was it intended for a certain player, and then they decided on a different face? Or a bench player who was going to be in, but then got cut or something? I'm so curious about this face.

I'm putting Jamie Williams first, as it's a little clearer. In the photo you can clearly see long hair coming out the back of his helmet. In the video interview below that, you can see his hair in the photo on the wall behind him. All I could find of Leroy Irvin was a football card from 1989. If you look closely (zoom in) you can see his long hair coming out on the right side:
