  1. It's interesting how much fullbacks carried the ball in 1976 compared to just 14 years later in 1990. I decided to give all fullbacks between 81 and 94 hp and just vary rs/ms like this:

Halfbacks range mostly between 19 and 38 hp, with a couple of outliers up to 63 hp. Their ms is 31 to 63. Kick and punt returners in a rb spot have 56 hp, and i'm thinking of giving them 63 rs.

    On to the QBs.

  2. I'm planning to re-rate the 1976 rom. Everything's a little too high for my taste. I'll probably also change the playbooks. I've moved towards making all playbooks similar and playable rather than historically accurate. I'm excited that all the teams are in the correct divisions, though, and everything else looks good so far. This is the year I was born and the Raiders won the Super Bowl for the first time, so I always wanted to have a rom for this year. If you want to give any suggestions for ratings, I will consider all opinions.

I'm actually one of those people who got rid of their Facebook account years ago. Can I watch without a Facebook account? Sounds like Twitch will be my best option.

Oh wow, I just assumed everyone has facebook. Yeah, Twitch is the same deal as facebook, though, I think you need to create a free account. My name on Twitch is rodneyrigoli with no space.

I'm not looking to play against people right now, I'm not that good and haven't set that up here. I might look into playing online again, but right now I'm just offering to livestream myself playing a rom you made, or any rom you'd like to see me play, for that matter. People always want feedback on the roms they created, so this is a way to offer that in real time.

Sure! I've not gotten into the whole live stream phenomenon so I'll need the 101's to figure it all out. But it would be cool to see a breakdown of the game, any feedback is appreciated!

It's pretty simple to watch. If you already have a facebook account, you can watch there. I broadcast to both facebook and Twitch. On facebook my page is called Rodney Rigoli Video Games. Just go to my page at the scheduled time. Then scroll down below the Spotlight videos. When I am live it should be the first video and it will be marked Live. When is a good time for you, and what is your facebook name?

Is this an easy hex fix? I'm not too concerned about the other bugs, I've been playing with them forever and barely noticed, but I like end of season stats to come close to what I expect, so this is something I would like to implement. It'd be nice to see the best kick and punt returners near the top of their respective leader boards each season.

Pretty much all of these have been talked about at one point.

    1. Im saying that the calculation for whether or not a pass is an int when the wr isn’t determined to be close to the ball is total garbage. There is a post on here that explains it. But basically its using a total bogus value for the qbs pass control because they forgot to load it for that calculation.

    4. Yes it uses the worst AKB all the time.

    5. There is an error with the arrow location calculation that adds some randomness to the location which would be ok except that there is no rhyme or reason to how it does so like a 50 KA kicker gets the least amount of randomness.

    6. The players rushing sim ability is used for sim kick returning and sim punt returning BUT the game uses the player put at kick return SIM values for BOTH kick returning and punt returning.

    1. Well, that's pretty interesting.

    4. Didn't know that, okay.

    5. Hmm, okay.

    9. Ah, that's why the returners on the rom I just did don't make a lot of sense. I chalked it up to Tecmo randomness and possibly matchups. I was going to use one player on each team for both kick and punt returns, but at the last minute I decided to use what the teams actually had as much as possible. Guess there was no point to that lol.

  8. Have 1, 4, 5, and 9 been talked about on here before? I'm not really sure what you mean by any of these.

    1. Are you talking about when the QB throws the ball miles beyond the receiver into the waiting arms of a defender for an int? Are you saying that's a bug?

    4. What do you mean it uses the worst AKB all the time? Are you saying AKB doesn't actually function and everyone has the same low value?

    5. My understanding of the arrow is that the higher the Kick Ability, the less the arrow moves, so it doesn't go as far to the top and bottom, making kicks more accurate. It also moves slower, which can make kicking harder for better kickers. I know this can be changed in various ways, but I didn't think of it as a bug. What exactly is the fix that you have put in?

    9. I thought sim kr is how often a player is targeted, and sim pr is yards. What is the bug you are talking about?

  9. I wasn't going to get that deep into it. But it's a simple matter to see, oh I gave that team a 44ms RT, so I'll give the returner a 15 in Sim Rushing. Stuff like that.

One big factor in return averages is the schedule because returners are pitted against also determine the outcome of a kick/punt return

    Via @bruddog

(kr/pr skill + condition adjust + random) - (opponent run defense + random)

You come up with a value which then determines which bucket of return lengths you will get

Here is an example of some logic for that.

On kick returns if i had things turned all the way up I could notice a guy always being towards the top consistently 20+ yards per return.  I'm not sure if it's anecdotal but it seems like more RBs are towards the top of the current season i'm looking at and they tend to have higher rushing numbers than wrs)

On punt returns the averages are so bunched together it we're talking about the top guys at 10-11 yards per return. Not a lot of juice in the squeeze there.

  10. TSB 2002 Old School

The 2002 NFL season was one of my favorite seasons ever. It was the first year the league went to 32 teams, and it was the last time the Raiders made it to the Super Bowl. They did lose, but it was against the Bucs and their old coach, now current coach, Jon Gruden. The Bucs had one of the best defenses ever, with Simeon Rice, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, and Ronde Barber. Rich Gannon had the best season of his career, and the Raiders also had Jerry Rice and Rod Woodson. In their first year in the league, Houston Texans QB David Carr got sacked an NFL record 72 times on the way to a 4-12 season. That is reflected in the rom with the worst OL in the game. They did manage to beat the Cowboys in their first game, who finished with a 5-11 record. The Jets had a magical year, led by Chad Pennington (playing with a 25ps/81pc QB is so much fun), Curtis Martin, and Laveranues Coles. They beat the Pats and Packers in weeks 16 and 17 to clinch the division, and knocked the Pats out of the playoffs. It was the only year in his entire career as a starter that Tom Brady missed the playoffs, and the Pats had won the Super Bowl the year before in Brady's first year. The Jets went on to crush Peyton Manning and the Colts in the playoffs 41-0! They lost their next playoff game to the Raiders 30-10. That entire division was good, as the Jets, Pats, and Dolphins all finished 9-7, while the Bills ended 8-8. The Giants also made the playoffs as a 10-6 wildcard behind Tiki Barber and a sick defense led by Michael Strahan. There was serious talk in NY about the possibility of a Jets-Giants Super Bowl. This might have been the closest we've come to that. The Giants lost their first playoff game to the 49ers, who would then lose to the Bucs.

Something else happened in 2002 that had a big impact on everyone reading this. Matt Knobbe created the Tecmo Repository.

About the rom: I call this an old school rom, because it is cxrom's original 32-team rom with no graphics or playbook changes. Cxrom put in the ability to change plays in the middle of a game, and an options menu that lets you change the time. The weather option is a placeholder and non-functional. It was implemented in later roms, but I didn't particularly want it. The NFC West bug fixes are in, the TE sim fix is in, the player 2 condition fix is in, and that's about it. It's Tecmo, just 32 teams. Player attributes are largely based on the original, except FBs and returners in a RB slot have 44rs and 50hp. The only FBs with more than 50hp had a significant amount of rushing yards. Returners in a WR slot with 13hp have 50rs. I did the sim ratings on a painstaking team by team, player by player basis. Team and individual stats should usually end up pretty close to how they actually were at the end of the season. The only thing is Marvin Harrison and Randy Moss typically end up with over 2000 receiving yards, and receiver yards are a little higher than reality in general. QB Rating and Passing TDs are also a little high, but RB yards are pretty spot on. The Saints seem to go deep in the playoffs a lot, probably benefiting from the 3-WR set. Oh, and that AFC East is always up for grabs. You try making 1 of 3 9-7 teams always make the playoffs while the other 2 don't. That's just not happening.

I'm going to have a lot of fun playing this, and I hope you do, too.

I never really thought about this before, I generally just ignored sim values for returners because it's such a minor part of the game, but I can easily utilize this. I put most returners in the RB3 or RB4 spot, so inflating the rushing value of elite returners will have little effect on the offense. Good to know.

Yeah this is the one you gave me a little while ago. @Knobbe this is the one that had that minor quarter length glitch I was talking about in another thread, but if people want the updated helmets and whatnot with the original playbooks, it would probably make a good base rom.

I noticed that the playbooks on the current base (one from download link in the first post) are mixed up.  For example the QB bootleg run that’s normally in slot 4 is now in slot 2.

Is there a version where the plays are in their original slots?  I saw a few posts up with some updates to helmets and names etc, and that version seems to have correct plays in slots.

Also is there a list of what hacks are on this rom (in original post link)?  (Tapmeter, flicker, PA/PC, etc.)?

I didn't even see this comment before I made mine, so as of April back when I commented this was still in the "base" rom. I just went back and found cxrom's actual original 32-team rom and put in the NFC West fixes, the player 2 fix, and the TE fix myself with no other changes. I haven't tried downloading a rom from the first post here since April, so I don't know, maybe someone fixed it between then and now, but no one ever replied to my comment.
