  1. I thought it might be fun to get 1000 yards receiving and 1000 yards rushing with Ricky Sanders, using only the WR reverse play for the rushing yards. Get 15 TDs running and 15 in the air. Also get 1000 passing yards each for Monk and Clark and 500 for the TE, and 1000 rushing yards for Byner. Except for keeping the WR reverse, use whatever plays you want if you think this is challenging. If you think it's easy, keep the original playbook. Obviously, the 49ers are a fun team to kick as much ass as possible with. Before setting goals for them, I'd be curious to see some people's best performances using them. I know some have surpassed 8000 passing yards, a mark I've never come close to. What about TDs and number of receptions? Anyone ever get 3000 yards with Rice and 3000 yards with Taylor, plus 1000 rushing with one of the backs? What other goals should there be for a 49er challenge?
  2. The high performance Houston challenge got me thinking about doing similar things with other teams. The 2000/2000/1000 RB challenge was one thing, that was fun with the Raiders. One I came up with now is getting 1000 yards each with the 5 starters on the Giants, and 15 TDs with each, without changing any of the receivers' positions. In other words, Ingram has to stay the top receiver, Baker bottom, and Bavaro as TE. Do what you want with the playbook. You must also average at least 20 yards on KO returns, or at least as much as you can get. You can also try to get 50 catches with each receiver. This would probably be easy for a lot of people on this board, so things to do to increase the challenge would be to also get 500 yards passing with each starting back, or 1000 with each if you're that good. Another alternative might be to get 1000 with each starter and 500 with each backup. Or in addition to the 1000 yards for each starter, get 1000 yards rushing with Simms, and 15 rushing TDs with Simms. To further increase the challenge, you can try not using any LBs or the NT on defense. Or only use Gary Reasons on defense (as he is the worst Giants LB, even though he's still better than most of the rest of the league). I'm not doing any of these variations, I'm having enough trouble just meeting the basic yardage goals.
  3. I'm in the middle of a high performance Giants season, where I'm trying to get 1000 yards with each starter. On the ground with Ottis and Dave, in the air with Baker, Ingram, and Bavaro. At the same time I'm trying my best to avg at least 20 yards on KO returns. If I have time at the end I'll try to get 500 passing yards each for Ottis and Dave also. Anyway, it's all I can do to restrain myself from using Ottis Anderson almost all the time. I actually had to play an entire game using only Meggett just to keep him even. When I run across the top aiming for defenders, half the time they don't even hit me because of his speed. Unless someone manages to wrap me up from behind, there's no stopping him.
  4. OK, I have never been good at getting interceptions. I always figured people don't get a lot of sacks when they go for picks. I always blitz the QB whenever I can, even against shotguns if that's not the play I called. I never took note of the most sacks I've gotten, but it has to be in the 70s or 80s with LT. But now I see you get an insane amount of interceptions, and also a decent number of sacks. If you're going for as many picks as you can get, why go after the QB at all? How do you decide when to blitz and when to hang back and try for a pick? Is it whim, or is there a strategy behind it? When you do go for the pick, how do you decide who to control, and where do you position him? The few times I hang back is usually when I haven't been paying close attention to the other team's play book and am not sure what the play is from the formation. Then I'll just try to stay somewhere in the middle of the field until the receivers get deep, then chase after them.
  5. Like I said, invite me over, the NES comes with me
  6. not only that, but i just remembered he seems to be one of those guys that just comes alive on kick returns. i always use him if bailey goes into bad or injured, which usually happens for at least 3 or 4 games.
  7. No it's not. Stephens, Mack, and Word have 31 MS (with 50 and 75 HP, at least). Hoge has 38. Bentley has 44. And Hampton is totally screwed with 25. you're right, sorry. i forgot to consider HP, because that is also a major factor as to how effective a back is in tecmo, though admittedly not near as important as MS. Word is only 31 MS in avg? He always seems faster than that whenever I play the Chiefs, though that could be because I usually face them with the Raiders, and the last game of the season is against them. The computer must always put him in crack mode. Anyway, so they gave Mack and Word power instead of speed. I can see that. I'll agree that Hampton got totally shafted by Tecmo (even though I can still run back KOs for TDs with him), but Bentley did have a higher avg than Stephens and Hoge. So I think his 44 MS is justified, especially since that's the best on the Colts. Mack didn't have that much higher of an avg, and the HP makes up for it. Word with 5.0 yds a carry probably should have been made faster.
  8. How did you manage that? Their secondary was totally disrespected by Tecmo. Eric Allen and Wes Hopkins are too slow (19 for Hopkins!) and low rated in INTs. I just completed a season with the Eagles and only logged ONE INT. Guess whose it was? reggie, seth, or jerome.
  9. Koz, right, forgot about him. Of the guys mentioned so far, he's the only one I've played with. When I use the Bears he has made some good plays for me.
  10. I noticed Bad Moon is from da Bronx and TSB CKY is from Rochester. Someone just posted about a possible Jersey tourney, what about NY? I could bring the console, game and/or controllers if necessary, but I don't have a place I could host. Anyone willing?
  11. OK, I don't know what the designers of Tecmo used as a criteria, but if I was designing a football video game the main stat I would use to determine how good a RB was in the game would be avg. yards per carry. Given that, according to the season stats from 1990 that you've given, the order of these backs from worst to best is: Stephens, Hoge, Bentley, Hampton, Mack, Word. I don't have the game in front of me, but I think the order from worst to best is the exact same in the game, going by MS. So I think Tecmo was right on, at least with this set of players. What exactly is your complaint?
  12. In a 70-0 romp of the Cowboys in my Pittsburgh No Offense season they had 0 completions, 0 rushing yards, 0 first downs. I had no picks though because I used the NT dive on most plays. I did, I think, return 2 KOs (off of safeties so they were extra short) for TDs, and also returned a short punt for a TD.
  13. It posted twice again. Before there was an option to delete a post, but I can't seem to find it now. I tried erasing all the text, but it doesn't let you send a blank post, either, so I'm just filling space here.
  14. i'd prefer new york, but anything within an hour or two (no traffic) of the gwb toll would be possible for me. i would make every effort to attend a tourney because i don't know anyone near me who plays tecmo. i've never actually played against a good human opponent, meaning i would probably get my ass kicked, but i'm willing to give it a go.
  15. Does anyone know how a quarterback's rating is determined? i don't mean any of this tecmo shit, i mean the actual "rating" stat. does tecmo use the same formula as the nfl?
  16. that's cool, but i'm curious. why did you run hampton for 200 more yards after he got his 1000? did someone get injured?
  17. yeah there's a max for every stat, depending on the position of the player. if you go beyond you have to keep track yourself. someone posted a breakdown of all the maxes somewhere on this board. offhand i know it's 63 for TDs, apparently 4095 for rushing yards, 255 for number of runs, passes, or catches. and i'm not sure of the rest. the only one i ever broke personally was number of rushes, but this is because i always try to keep as balanced a game as possible, otherwise it gets boring. obviously if i can get 5000 total rushing yards spread around 3 players, i can get way beyond that by just using the best RB on the team. hey, anyone know if avg. yards per carry stays accurate after you get more than 4095 yards and 255 carries? i know it does if you stay under 4095, because when i was over 255 i divided total yards by avg. yards and got the number of runs. i have to try this out now, because it would be easy to count how many times you run, then just muliply it by avg. yards. otherwise keeping track of how many yards you run would just be a pain in the ass.
  18. OK I did not purposely post the same thing three times. I clicked the submit button once, and I didn't get a session interrupt or anything. Everything looked normal when I posted this. Knobbe, do you know why this happens? Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening in the future?
  19. I posted about this in another thread, but I used Washington one season because I wanted to try out their crazy pass plays. I changed the second run to FB Offtackle L and replaced that ridiculous reverse with something else, but I kept the rest of the playbook. I didn't keep stats, but I know I managed to go undefeated and win the Superbowl. I actually liked playing with Washington. I don't have a problem leaning on the run if the passing game isn't there. Byner was a workhorse for me, and Sanders had the most passing yards. Clark and Monk did about the same, but I'm sure I had much more yards running than passing. I don't remember what I did on defense, but unless I'm doing a specific challenge that says not to lurch, I lurch. So I was probably the NT a lot.

  22. Oh, and I meant to ask if Andre Tippett should have been made better. I just tried the "Just Be New England" challenge (holy crap these guys suck) and he is not good at all. Lippett was pretty good, and I remember people talking about Tippett and Lippett back then, but I thought Tippett was one of the better LBs in real life. Also, John Stephens was in Bad condition for probably at least 10 games. WTF is up with that? The team sucks as it is, how are you supposed to do anything with their leading back in Bad?
  23. I think Rypien was easily one of the worst quarterbacks in NFL history to win a superbowl...he wasn't that good. Monk is a legend but the game was made pretty late in his career and he had lost a step. I find both of their ratings well represented. I agree that Rypien wasn't that good, but then I'm a Raiders fan whose earliest football memory is the picture in SI of a Raider holding a shredded 'Skins jersey after the Raiders won the Superbowl. However, I think Monk should have been given better stats. In the one season I played as the Redskins I kept the default playbook and went undefeated, including a win in the Superbowl over, yep no lie, the Raiders. During my season Sanders put up much better numbers than Monk, and I thought that was wrong. Monk and Clark were about equal, and Monk should be made much better than Clark. Byner I thought was decent enough, not really familiar with him in real life.
  24. that's excellent for the rams. i never really thought of the rams as having a run-centered offense. i just wrote this whole long post, but got an error when i tried to submit. now i have to try to remember everything i wrote about. it's not on the thread now, so don't blame me if it shows up later. anyway, here we go again. i did it with the raiders! i had 2000/2000/1000 after 14 games. the best game was against Seattle, i think week 11, over 580 yards total, with over 540 for Bo. i'm glad i got it done early, because the chiefs shut my running game down in the last game of the season. i threw one int, and fumbled twice - one was run back for a TD and one gave them possession inside the 20, and led to their second TD in a 17-7 loss. Bo and Marcus both got hurt in the first half. it was my only loss of the season, including the playoffs and superbowl. Final season stats: Bo Jackson - 181/2321 yds* 12.8 avg 26 TDs Marcus Allen - 216/2111 yds* 9.7 avg 33 TDs Steve Smith - 217/1002 yds 4.6 avg 19 TDs *#1 and #2 in the league Postseason stats will be posted later. My basic strategy was to use Smith almost exclusively in the beginning of the season, when the games are easy. I only used Bo on fourth down. Smith got his 1000 yards before I had played half a season. This should be even easier with the Bears, as Muster has nearly double the HP of Smith, and I believe he is also faster. I can get over 400 yards in one game with Muster. He should break the 1000 mark by game 3or 4. Then all you do is alternate between Bailey and Anderson, saving his oneness for those tough games towards the end of the season.
