Join us the night before the tourney for an assortment of NES/SNES games while we set up from 5-9 PM.   Mainly sports and competition games with NHL 94, NBA Jam, Ice Hockey, Tecmo Super Bowl, Street Fighter 2, Mike Tyson's Punchout, etc, etc.

Triple A and Collegiate baseball games in Omaha the night before as well.  For anyone not attending the RBI tourney, the Omaha Beef indoor football team plays that night at 6:30.  Omaha has 2 arcade bars.  Beercade in the Benson neighborhood and Beercade 2 just south of downtown Omaha.

We're getting close to having confirmed players attending from 10 states this year.  The pic below illustrates the states and years that were represented.

Tecmo-Mad-Brad got a reaction from Green Majik in Original Tecmo on NES-Japan Version is BACK!
thats right kiddies, Nate and I have been playing a buttload lately again...we buzzed thru 16 games in 4 days, a great clip for sure.

We have started to chronicle our games now as we been keeping track of every game's score, who was which team, who was home/road, and what were the key notes about each and every game. Since we got the Japan version of Tecmo to play on our NES, we decided to call it "the championship era". below is a brief re-cap of some of our best games and such. we like to call it...............

Legendary Games, Fantastic Finishes, Monumental Moments, Bitter Rivals, Crucial Games, and Classic Re-matches.

    Game #1 CLE( @ SF(N)
The first ever 2-player bizzaro game, turned out to be rather anti climactic. SF torched the CLE D repeatedly, and even managed to turn the ball over a couple times and still blow out the Brownies en-route to a stunning 17-0 victory. The first game, and the first shutout. Yikes! Fear soon ran thru the hearts of SF opponent’s worldwide. CLE had a semi chip shot FG blocked by Charles Haley and turned the ball over on downs in another possession in SF territory. A thorough and sound clobbering!

    Game #4 SF(N) @ NYG(
NYG took an early lead in this bloody battle, and SF struck back in the 3rd qtr to tie things up. Both defenses held, and they went into O.T. In the extra period, Meggett almost broke off a long KR, but was corralled near the NYG 40 thanks to a lucky dive. They traded possessions, and the 2nd time SF had the ball LT just missed a crucial INT thanks to the “jukes of hazard” at around the NYG 30. A Montana toss a few plays later, and SF wins 13-7….LT blocked the xtra, just for the hell of it.

    Game #6 LA(N) @ DEN(
This isn’t too memorable for Nate, but it marked the biggest blowout ever between us. DEN took an early 14-0 lead and headed into the locker room leading 17-3. DEN erupted for a 21 point 3rd qtr, thanks to many turnovers, and finished off LA 45-3. After the game Nate was quoted in saying “the game wasn’t even as close as the final score”.

This record should stand forever as the most points scored by 1 team in our 2-player rivalry. I cant see Nate ever hanging 45 on me. I know he has dropped a score of 27 on me, and maybe even a 30 or 31, but 45 is a long road to go against me.

    Game #8 CHI( @ SF(N)
In a back and forth game, which saw Tillman get a huge return to open the game deep into CHI territory. SF cruised to a 7-0 lead. CHI raced back and manhandled the SF D for the rest of the game, with 3 long scoring drives and determined running by Anderson. Down 13-7 Tillman returned one to the house to take the lead thanks to a missed CHI PAT. CHI struck again with yet another bone crushing drive late in the 4th, but Tillman reared his ugly head once again and got another KR deep into CHI territory where Montana quickly tossed to the house. Singletary miraculously broke thru and blocked the extra point to keep the score tied. In the O.T. period, CHI marched down the field thanks to Anderson’s running and got the TD, to win 27-20

as if SF needs any damn help moving down the field with this version of thier offense...damn Tillman anyways. Tillman should be the missing link to make them a bona-fide favorite to win the whole thing in our upcoming season.

    Game #10 DEN( @ LA(N)
A rematch of the biggest blowout ever, but this one was played in LA instead. This also marks the beginning of the KR era, as they started to score in bunches. LA took an early 3-0 lead, only to have to make a comeback to tie things at 10 midway thru the 4th. Bell then proceeds to take the KO to the house and demoralize the LA unit. Fletcher then gets an INT ret for a TD very late to finish off the Raider’s 24-10.

    Game #11 SEA( @ NYG(N)
This will forever go down as the original “punt-sack” game. SEA got a td early but LT did his work 6-0. NYG scores a TD late 3rd for a commanding 14-6 lead and a likely “game over”. When NYG has a 2 score lead, theres no reason to lose that game. Jefferson then takes a KR deep into NYG land and Kreig leads the charge to pull with in 1. NYG stalls and goes to punt with about 50 seconds left, and Nate lets the meter cycle thru about 3 times trying to eat clock before punting, but a miraculous diver tackles Landeta, and SEA has the ball inside the NYG 40. A mad drive later and SEA takes an improbably 20-14 lead. Meggett then meets the kicker at the 30, but a blocker popcorns him and Meggett goes 70 more to the house. Game Over. NYG wins 21-20

    Game # 12 SF(N) @ DEN(
DEN becomes a bona-fide mega power in this game as they take a 14-10 lead into the locker room, then intercept Joe Cool 3 times in the 2nd half including an INT in the end zone, en-route to scoring 17 unanswered points to finish the game. DEN wins going away 31-10.

Things were looking bleak for the world, but the evil empire that is SF proved they can even get thier can handed to em....also DEN dont lose when its on the good side as player 1 @ home. Eat that SF!

    Game # 16 SEA( @ DAL(N)
A fairly uneventful game, that featured the 2nd shut out in Bizzaro Tecmo history. SEA managed to play-pick DAL around 10 times and they Cat and Moused their way into totally avoiding run plays and shutting down the passing game. This was possibly the most dominating defensive effort in the history of Bizzaro Tecmo. DAL did show up and play great defense themselves, but SEA kept DAL out of scoring reach all game and took it 10-0.

those are some of the better games we have had, out of the 19 total we have played. As opposed to the U.S. version, SF is now hands down the best team on the game in Bizzaro Japan version. SF has the most potent and fast offense, they have a top 2 or so defense, and they best FG kicker, a top notch punter, and a awesome returner who almost single handedly willed the 9ers to a win over da' bears in game #8. While NYG/CHI/DEN are all log jammed at 2 thru 4. Kick returns are the premium and so is offense as opposed to defense being the key in the U.S. version. So the scoring is definately up. Lately the scoring has somewhat returned to almost normal proportions.

Great time in Green Bay at this tourney.  Troy got us involved with an original Tecmo Bowl tourney friday night.  Took part in the 6 game swiss format of Tecmo Super Bowl on Saturday.   Great weekend of TB & TSB.  A guy in our crew won a SNES clone system, and I won a large Mcfarland Aaron Rogers figure as well.  Lots of prizes given out.

Definitely worth the 10 hour drive from Omaha with the crew.  We packed in a trip to Lambeau for a 30 minute tour of the stadium.  Excellent weekend.

I feel like more people need to hear this.  The stigma around hardcore is absolutely ridiculous, and I used to buy into it.  If you're good at non lurching rules,  you'll still be good in hardcore, but it does require some consideration and some risk/reward that wouldn't otherwise be a factor in other tournaments.

Obviously if you're playing against teams like the Lions or Packers, and you have a slow QB, the risk is greater, and thus your playbook needs to take all of that into consideration.

We had at least 6 people who made it to their first ever GBLAN event, and they all had fun, and didn't complain about the rules one bit.  In fact, I think not having any gameplay restrictions went a long way into easing their transition into Tecmo.  In the last few games of group play, they were all playing their peers in ability, which is the beauty of Swiss rules.

I'm excited as we carve our own path in Tecmo, seeing where it leads.  I'm also looking forward to expanding the original Tecmo Bowl tournament moving forward.  Those of you who didn't participate in that event really missed out.

Great tournament run by Troy.  The value was unbelievable really.  For $20 - $30 entry you got entered into a free raffle with some great prizes (I won the signed Andre Reed jersey and $35 gift certificate to the bar), got a free drink, and there was free pizza coming out for hours during the tournament.  Top 2 players took home some good cash prizes as well.  The guys that came were all laid back and fun to hang out with.  Troy set up and tore down the whole tournament himself, set up the stream, and sat out playing to commentate all day and enter all the scores on challonge.   We were done with the whole tournament in less than 7 hours and everyone got at least 7 games in.  Truly an impressive effort.  Also, the bartenders and patrons of the bar were extremely friendly which made for an excellent time in-between games.   If you haven't been to a GBLAN Tournament yet, then I don't know what you are waiting for.  Troy's a one man show.  Oh yeah he sang the national anthem too.

Using Cleveland, I played Minnesota last night in the Divisional playoffs and holy crap were they tough.  Every few plays, though, they'd leave the top wideout open (Slaughter), and this is how I eventually got some yards. They key to beating them offensively is to hit the top wideout on Pass 2.  They completely shut down Pass 1 and Run 2 every time.  Run 1 will only get you a max of 2 yards.  I beat them 24-0 with all extra points blocked.

However, the biggest takeaway is that you cannot, cannot give up any points.  I shut their offense down by calling Run 2 every time, using the bottom DB and aiming at Hershel Walker every time.  They don't throw to AC very much (though they should), so I covered Jordan and got a lot of picks.  I also punted 6 times in the game (a record for me) and pinned them inside their 15 5 out of 6 times.  That set my defense up for success.

With Chicago in the title game, it was a little easier, but not much.  I beat them 30-0 calling Run 1 every time and shutting down Anderson.  Again, I used the bottom DB (Minnifield) and aimed for Anderson every time to stop Run 2.  When they passed,  I covered Gentry.  I didn't get as many interceptions, but I made them punt the whole game.

Offensively, SIngletary is coming free every play.  What I did was move to the top of the pocket a little and I hit my topside WR or bottom side TE to get yards.  You can run on them a little more than Minnesota, but not much.

Tecmo-Mad-Brad got a reaction from TheFes75 in Best team on original tecmo bowl japan version
49ers for sure as the absolute best in the 1990 Japan version.  Juggernaut team all around.  Vikings certainly rank fairly high up with a beefed up defense, and faster Anthony Carter.  They are so strong that they can still overcome the WR run play and beat most teams.  Minnesota however has an Achilles heel with the worst punter in either version.  49 yards max really screws them with field position.

I'd still go with NY & LT and Chicago as 2nd/3rd teams...really in either order.

As for the original 1989 USA version you can make a legit case for New York, Chicago, and San Fran as the best team.  However in the Japan version its clearly SF.

Tecmo-Mad-Brad reacted to TheFes75 in Players speed
Was talking with a friend the other day and before we knew what any of the player attributes were for the original Tecmo Bowl, we would try and figure out who was faster. Of course you could use the stats that the game provided and it gave you an good indication of the faster players, but no a true indication.  Another way was just the eye and feel test.  If he looked faster and moved faster then that was probably so.  The other way we tested to see the speed was to score a touchdown and as soon as you crossed the goal line, start running the other way, the further you get away from the goal line the faster the player.  We actually did this for every team and every offensive player to "rank" them.  Little did we know that there were attributes that make players faster from the get go vs after say 3 yards.  Anyways just a stroll down memory lane, before the game was vetted out down to the tiniest detail.
