  1. any updates on joe's personal life are up to him. things sound good. is all i will say. Just as many donors want privacy he still has a right to the same about his personal affairs. As for updates you will get check my first post where i update expenditures. that will give you an idea that he is working on his game for madison with the purchase of nintendo original controllers.
  2. we mean from chi to Wisconsin. I avoid that stupid skyway too. The 90 isn't as bad now but 10 years ago it seemed like it would always take us 3 hours to get to or away from the city of Chicago on the toll rd.
  3. That's what I noticed on I94 that it had less traffic and less tolls. Something I've argued for 10 years that was better than tolls and risking sitting in traffic for a half hour to four hours like we had on the way up because it is the shorter distance between two points. Take that Louis.
  4. that list is sickening to be honest. I had this conversation with Ryan McKay in a Cle tourney and I did not realize just how bad the percentages where. I thought it as like 20 or 30 percent to the charity. Not 2 or 3 for example. I find the salvation army store has amazing prices on old appliances and clothing. Same as Buffalo city mission and Amvets. That's what we have around here. When I was in Memphis I went to both Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity to buy some clothes for work. Now they had similar prices on clothes. But the prices for furniture pieces where ridiculously high. Or so it seemed to me.
  5. not all non profits are created equally. One has to look at how much of the donation goes towards operating costs and principal. I'm not claiming to know the bottom line at goodwill. Yet there are a lot of modern charities I would not give money to if I found that a significantly larger percentage of the donation went to operating costs. Technically giving a person money directly is better than any charitable organization. There is no operating costs for this. I mean yes I am buying a share of gas for a trip I would make anyways but also that would be the first thing to be paid out of my pocket if the response had not been so large. Same for the room fee. Since that means 100% is going to the charity I am far beyond the best of charities. As for this trust issue, That's the risk in charity. I don't just plan to give the money away nor do I think the small amount left over is going to go to something counterproductive. I plan to get to know Joe better over the next month to try to assure myself of that but its part of the risk. A risk if I had felt was too high I would have never tried this. In fact i think many of them feed of the tax return aspect to make enough to pay jobs for people. Yes they do some good but a true charity should be about charity first. A tax benefit, if any should just be a consequence.
  6. ok. as of now I would take 2 more paypal donations of $20 and I would call that good including whatever MR. Tecmo would like to send via a check. All donations are anonymous unless you state otherwise. After that I think it will be more than enough to cover the trip and a few items to help Joey get ready for the tourney. At that point I will be good. Unless of course you insist and I would of course forward that towards Joe as a gift along with all remaining money. But as for getting him to Madison and ready for Madison cash wise $40 more will be plenty. If any of you would like to talk to Joe in encouragement I think it would help but that is strictly optional. Hopefully he can get a lot of TPC games in on the original controller I plan to send him.
  7. That sounds like a good ideal as well. I'll wait to I hear more sentiment but that is what I lean towards as well.
  8. I'm still surprised at the amount of the donations and the number. I must admit that anything beyond 500 or 550 dollars is more of an added bonus to help Joeegats. Which brings up another issue. What do I do with any excess money. I plan to use the money as efficiently as possible. I am sure there will be leftover funds. Also I am now convinced we will go well over what is needed for Joe. anyways I see a few options. 1. Try to stop the donations now. Save any extra money for next years donation or give to a charity of great quality. 2. Continue to allow the money to come in and perhaps help a few guys on the edge with travel expenses without affecting the main pot we are collecting to get Joe to Madison and ready to play on game day. A number of people wanted this to happen again. Not necessarily as a charity situation but more to get a buddy they want to be at the tourney that would need a small stipend to make the trip affordable. The advantage is we can get several of our friends to the event. Of course that comes with several difficulties which are better left discussed in detail elsewhere. Please let me know what you think in either email, on this post or a different post.
  9. thank you Ryan. Afraid I will be quite busy this weekend. I will give you a call Monday or Tuesday and see where we are at.
  10. there are a few pieces of equipment needed. Plus perhaps an extengency I do not see now that might arrise. i raised the maximum goal to 450 where it shall stay. I'd like to thank everyone who has helped either with a donation or kind words in support of Joey. Other than the above mentioned scenarios I think we have more than enough momentum to get Joe to Madison even if the donations ended here.
  11. i think support in itself is needed if not more than this event or money, a support group is important in this situation. thanks for the kind words. I think there might be a large fan base supporting Joey in Madison.
  12. I just paid the entry. He will be under Charity entry (joeegats). Make sure you include your email so I can message you in thanks. I was unsure of the name of the first $20 donation
  13. just so you guys know I am not doing any posting of names or recruiting. post here if you feel like it. anyone who does help is appreciated. more than words can express if things go well.
  14. I know that is true. thank you MrTSB. I'd love to see you out there too bro. Where we will discover if you have legally changed your name to Mister Tecmosuperbowl.
  15. Ok. I had a long conversation with Joe and we will give this a try. Here is the background. About five or six years ago my own issues with depression nearly got me to kill myself. I nearly threw myself off a large incline in a fit of rage with the people i had gone to for help. I have many issues with ECMC hospital besides that incident. The point was I was antisocial to a T back before I went to my first tourney. The process of breaking myself out of that and suicidal depression wasn't easy. Tecmo helped a lot and playing live helped a lot. Joe is the same age I was and has many of the same problems. Which is why I am convinced. You read his post about how he understands things are wrong. Yet at the same time he has been burnt by people trying to be his friend. A stolen car and stolen money most likely are the tip of the iceberg. He also understands that winning Madison won't change his life. Making better friends of all of us will. Which is why I am asking for people to donate 20 dollars apiece to support his journey and entry to Madison. Your entry buys a bus fair to Cleveland round trip. He will then carpool with my brother in my car to keep costs down. He will split a room with Louis, myself and El Tecmo. Of course he asks that in the time before the tourney he be allowed to play as many games as possible. We will also need to buy a nes controller and a nes adapater so he can practice with tpc games as he gets ready. 40 dollars for entry fee. Also some grub money. all this will run around 450 dollars. Anything more I will pay or he will. In the meantime I have given him some new job goals and life goals to get him out of the low wage trap he has been in. Hoepfully with our encouragement and a bit of luck he can make something good of himself. Anyways if you want to send a 20 dollar share. or more. Please send it via paypal to [email protected] The payback we agreed to was that in the event of 1st place he would pay back all of the sponsor ship money. In any other position we will allow him to keep the winnings to help him out with various life needs he may have. Thank you for your consederation Francis Buennagel PS. This is a serious effort. I expect there to be not one post in a non serious manner. donations recievied xxxxx $50 xxxxx $50 xxxxx $40 xxxxx $20 xxxxx$50 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxxx $40 xxxx $50 xxxx $20 xxx $20 xxxx $30 total 510 of 510 nes controller 8.95 usb nes adapater 13.75 madison entry fee 40 money order $41 shipping fee $5.8 shirt $5 bus ticket 30.5 money order 61 total 206
  16. to be honest my conversation with Joe makes me think he might actually need a bunch of friends like us to just hang out with once in his life. so that is where I am throwing my support. it may go for naught but I am about to make this official.
  17. don't you have tons of money in swiss bank accounts???? on a serious note my plan is to cut joes costs down to a t. its not a plane ticket. I'm going to have him ride a bus and car pool to keep the money down. If not for that I would not be posting as it would not be feasible. Yet if you want to raise some money on here for a flight go ahead. I'd love to see you out there bro.
  18. I'm still of the opinion we should help him come. Joe's had some bad experinces with people who claim to be friends and use him. To say he can't go in public as it would shock his system is the last thing he needs now. Instead he needs a support system to let him know that he is among friends.
  19. I should have known that might come up. I think things are looking up for Joe as our conversation has been quite different from posting on here. I really do want to help the guy get a job more than anything. Than the tourney is like an added bonus to give him a boost if he can win.
  20. Ok. I am talking to Joe about getting a new job. He was a dishwasher and lost his job. I'm trying to get him to go to a temping firm for a few weeks before hand and after to cover some expenses. This encourages me that perhaps if he can do some work on his end we can trust him more. Honestly trying to move up in warehouse work will do more for him than winning a tournament prize.
  21. that's on your own buddy. you just make sure you get enough food to move your fingers to play tecmo.
  22. do you think you could collect the money yourself and that anyone would trust you Joe? I almost guarantee in that case you take the money and run. The reason i am doing it as no one trusts you. If you trust gats with 400 dollars please post now..
  23. there is no gym membership this is why it is in my name. Bs like Gym memberships are not happening. I will take it from the initial response that these guys will settle for money back. That means we can go as soon as you message me on aim. Now look if I stiffed you. Which I won't. Everyone on here knows who I am. They know where I live, the tourney I run and all the other things I do. The last thing you have to worry about is me stiffing you. It would ruin all the good will and friends I ever generated on here an I won't do that for a measly 2,000 dollars or 2,000,000 million dollars. As long as you have an account I can put the money in (cause I won't be able to cash it till Monday as banks are closed on Sunday and ATM's are not giving out that kind of dough. Nor would i have you risk being robbed.) A simple paypal account and I will transfer funds or get you a money order. Whatever works the best for you
