    Rules:

    1. Tier list for group play.  Winner of coin toss is player 1 and chooses tier.  Loser of coin toss chooses team from tier player 1 selected or a lower tier.  Winner of coin toss chooses team second from tier originally chosen or lower tier.

    No photo description available.

    2. We will not keep track of teams used during group play.  Choose the team that best suits you in group play under the tier list guidelines.

    3. Customizing Playbooks and Lineup Changes.  You are allowed to change your selected team's playbook before each game.  Checking the change / substitution screen is allowed during gameplay.  Once per quarter for each player is the recommendation.

    4. All substitutions of any player in any position is LEGAL

    5.  No ties. If a game is tied when regulation concludes, competitors will proceed to OT. All OT’s will be 5-minute sudden death periods. If no one scores in the first OT, the second OT will be only the first quarter in a new game. This process will be repeated until a winner emerges. So that one competitor does not start with the ball in every OT period, the receiving team (i.e. team that gets the ball first) shall alternate beginning with the second OT period.

    6. Defensive Lineman Lurching / Nose Tackle Dive / Any D-Lineman Dive is LEGAL

    7. Nintendo Malfunctions: If there is an equipment failure in the first half, games will be replayed from the start. If equipment malfunctions in the 2nd half, only the second half is replayed. In that event, the scores from each half are added together to obtain a final score. If the game was uncompetitive or the equipment malfunctioned due to human error, the tourney organizers reserve the right to declare a winner without replaying any portion of the game.

    8. Tournament Disputes: Troy GBLAN aka Trojan1979 is the sole tournament referee. He will decide all disputes as he is not a competitor in this event, unless there are an uneven number of players.  Substitute officials may be appointed by Trojan if deemed necessary.

    9. Competitors are allowed to bring their own controller, but it has to be an official Nintendo rectangle controller, official Nintendo dogbone controller, or a Hyperkin, Cirka, Gamerztek, or Old Skool 3rd party controller.  We reserve the right to inspect and deny use of any controller for any reason.

    10. All systems are either original NES consoles, or compatible top loading clone consoles , all hooked up via composite connection on CRT screens.

This professional live coverage will be voiced and broadcasted by Troy GBLAN aka Trojan1979 on The Retro Sports Gamer Channel. He is also organizer and voice of the GBLAN Online Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament.  Troy will be showcasing the best players this tournament has to offer from opening kickoff until the champion is crowned!   Additional coverage may also be provided, details will follow if this is the case.

I was 10 once.  I thought about being 6'3", decided height was a spectrum.  I've been to MN and IL.  We must be brothers.

I'm looking forward to the stream.  Have fun!

Doing My first live tournament and Don't know what to expect. (Tecmo Madison rules) any advice?  Another main problem I have is, I have no one to practice against except the computer. But that's way too easy. Any roms that would be comprable to playing a live human opponent? Or anyone in the Baltimore area want to get together for some games? Thanks

Trying to help a new bud here...

Are you saying you are hosting, or participating in your first tournament?  Each Tecmo tournament varies, but typically speaking most established tournaments will ban defensive line lurching, and allowing a WR or TE to run the ball on non reverse plays.  Outside of that it's basically game on.

This site is a great resource, but there are a lot more people out there that are fond of Tecmo, that don't visit this site on a regular basis, or haven't ever discovered it.  I'd suggest making some posts in some video game related groups in your geographic area.  Try to find a local pub or sports bar that you can gather at with a couple of TV's and make some friends.  Usually that bar can help you get the word out and help draw in some new players.

Playing against the CPU only does so much.  You don't account for the variable coverage and movements from a man defender, or the mind games played in the passing and juke games on offense.

You may want to brush up on some videos of high level play.  Head on over to the Retro Sports Gamer Channel on youtube, and watch some amazing Tecmo being played.

There is the TPC2 championship video which just happened in April :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGk4vlME4wQ

and it's associated championship series between Darthrockman and Mort here :

There is also an online tournament with lots of commentary that's actually in progress right now.  you can catch the weekly vids in this playlist :

    Good luck!

We held our very first event on Saturday and things couldn't have gone any better.

When you actually decide to throw one of this tourneys, the first question is will anyone show up? Optimistically hoping for 16 players, we had 10 who had RSVP'd in one fashion or another, and ended up with 12 come kick off. Thus, the turnout was great and it included some very good experienced players like Mort, Madtown Spliffstars, Tundra Yeti, Hank the Tank, and Troy Evers. We also had a couple of players who hadn't played the game in years.

The team balance was randomly determined, but ended up with three solid teams. Tundra Yeti and Troy Evers, Madtown Spliffstars and Hank the Tank, and Mort and Derek Snyder. A tip of the cap to all these players who were very open, sharing their knowledge of the game with their partners. Mort truly was in his Tecmo College element tutoring Derek with things that work and why things you thing work won't.

The tournament setup, logistics, and flow all went without a hiccup, which is a big fear going into your first event. Hank and Troy ended getting there early, and came with extra equipment graciously supplied by   GBLAN. The owners of Village Lanes also owned Badger Bowl, so they asked if we knew of the film from those tournaments and it was fun telling them one of the stars of that, Mort, would be playing today. I'm pretty sure the bowling alley made a few bucks on food and drinks. And speaking of drinks, Hank did manage to behave himself! Everyone helped setup and breakdown much to my delight.

As we were setting up and talking about who is currently in Troy GBLAN'S online tournament, it was revealed Madtown was undefeated in the opening rounds, 6-0. This hot streak continued as he along with partner Hank, went undefeated through the tournament.

Once partners were drawn, each team sat down for a game so the players could talk strategy. Things officially started with a round robin round. Bracket play followed with teams seeded according to their round robin results.

During bracket play Tundra Yeti and Troy drew a tough second round matchup against Madtown and Hank, which they lost, 28-21. After dismissing the PunkyQB and Travis in the opening round, The Tiffler and Jay, fell a FG short of beating Mort and Snyds, 24-21. Tiffler and Jay fell a FG short again in the loser's bracket to Troy and Tundra who moved on to the loser's final. This too was a close game but this time Mort & Snyds held the three point advantage, 17-14. The final was not quite as close for Madtown's dominance was delivered, 24-21.

The best part of the day though we're easily the vibes. Every player told me thank you for putting the event on and to a man, they all said they had a great time. Nonetheless, this great time wasn't a lucky fluke it was a team effort. First and foremost, thank you to our sponsors Village Lanes Monona and Video Game X-Change Madison. Thank to all the players, for you made this event - without your friendly demeanors and you're shared knowledge of the game, it wouldn't be possible. Special thanks to Mort, whose name alone gave us credibility, but Mort did more than that, he taught Snyds a lot, definitely a lot more than a player picks up at a tourney, and he streamed us live on the Retro Sports Gamer YouTube channel. Thanks to Troy GBLAN'S who offered his equipment and any support I needed from a far. Thank you to anyone who shared the event or mentioned it on Discord. And finally, thank you from the bottom of my heart to all those friends who showed some support whether it was to come out and play or just drop in at Village to say hi that day.

We had a great day and for that we are so grateful, PunkyQB may suck at Tecmo, but his heart is filled with love!

Thank you Village Lanes - Mary, Video Game X-change, Alyssa, Leo, Scott, Nicole, Russ, Will, Rianna, the Tiff spawn, Sarah, Tricia and Mike.

Thank you Troy & Tundra Yeti, Tim & Scott V, the Tiffler & Jay, Travis, Hank & Madtown, Mort & Snyds, Troy and Retro Sports Gamer Tom.

    Long live Tecmo,
    PunkyQB

I really wanted to make this.  Kids + May = busy, so really sorry I couldn't do more.  Hopefully you can attract more regional players moving forward.  That being said, 10 for a first time tournament isn't bad.  Keep the dream alive bud.

great tournament and incredible payouts! $500 for 3rd place are you kidding? awesome sauce!

    congrats to

@Darth RockMan for bringing home that trophy!  hopefully next year we get a bigger turnout

@Darth RockMan was big time in this tournament.  Taking two from @Tecmo Psycho and Mort back to back is no small feat.  For those that were looking for the stream link, it's here....

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGk4vlME4wQ

Due to the length of the event, and upload limitations, Youtube deemed it necessary to end things after game 1 between Rock and Mort.  It's my goal to have that footage separated from our local recording and uploaded as a separate video this week.

For those that might be wondering what the longer pauses might be for, it's because of the round robin nature of the tournament, and the format itself.  Because you couldn't call a match up your opponent had played in, as well as yourself, additional time and consideration was needed to determine what would be permitted.  Due to the marathon style of the tournament with 10-11 round robin games plus the bracket, people needed a brief pause in between each game.  I did not witness or hear about many blowouts, so the nerves of each player were certainly tested.

As this continues to grow, I would imagine reducing the number of RR games will be a reality.  I'd also imagine a possible reduction in play in games down to 1, as well as earlier bracket rounds potentially to accelerate the timeline before going best 2/3.  Those decisions take place elsewhere of course.

Congrats to the RSG guys for putting on another great event.  It was fun to be there.

On another note, someone had the bright idea of playing "Goodbye Horses" again.(Buffalo Bill cross dressing scene from Silence of the Lambs)  This happened during the TPC I during bracket play last year.  @toolie and I noticed it, and despite his absence this year, I let him know it happened again.  Here was his response.

"Would you lurch me?  I'd lurch me..."

I know @joeygats likes huge turnouts.  Marginal growth of even just 10 people would add another $1,000 into the prize pool.  The tournament is all about quality of competition, combined with quantity of games.  Sure, your buy in is essentially doubled when compared to other national tournaments, but you get more than double the games, so keep that in mind when contemplating attending this in the future.

    GG everyone

Why is there a gas mask? What's with the Soviet theme? This is a trophy?

I can answer those questions with:
    1) I don't know
    2) Why the hell not?
    3) You bet your ass it's a trophy

Some lucky son of a bitch is taking that thing home with them on Saturday.

If someone could pull this anthem performance off prior to the event that would be legendary.

  8. Wow! What a great tournament everyone! We set a new GBLAN/Edge Tecmo attendance record at 28, for a warm up tournament! Congrats to JoeyGats on his first GBLAN tournament victory! Green Majik took 2nd, and NMUFred took the D2 Championship prize home! Thanks to all of our sponsors and players for making it a great night!

More coverage from Venture Wisconsin will follow in the days and weeks ahead!  I'll provide a more formal recap as time permits, as the dust settles, and we return to normal life once again.

  9. It's with a sad heart I must report Ahman Green had a death in the family this week.  The wake is Friday, the funeral is Saturday.  As a result he cannot be with us during this difficult time.  Any one that was coming on the basis of his appearance will be offered a refund if they no longer wish to participate.

Super excited about Barry Melrose next weekend!!!

This will be my second time coming to an Edge of '94 event. Last year was a total blast. Got a lot of NHL games in and had a lot of fun watching a very competitive finals.

I am excited to play in the Friday night Tecmo tournament for the first time. During Tundra I was pleased to find there is a strong core or solid Tecmo players in the Green Bay area. I hope the GB guys are ready, cause the Chicago boys are looking to make some noise!!

I'm also looking forward to all this pizza that is being mentioned. Looks like I just need to bring some coconut water and I'll be good to go :). Props to @trojan1979 / Troy for always having awesome sponsors, prizes, and an overall well-run tournament.

I'm looking forward to seeing what all Edge VR Arcade has to offer. Last year I played some nifty VR games - one of them was a flying sim. I was too chicken to follow through with it, but I'm looking to be braver next year!

See you all next weekend !!

Thanks for the kind words GM!  So far we are rocking about 27 players for Tecmo, and about 31 for NHL94.  Definitely could use more, but the overall participation is up from last year's weekend.  We are hoping for a few more 94 players to come out of the woodwork and get their sign ups in.

  11. Our current TSB cap is 32 players for this tournament due to time and space(estimated room for 16 setups)  Between playing sponsors and paid players, we are at 27 players.  While two of us(Myself and Baconfan) can step out to allow someone else paying in, we are still getting close to full.  We are not competing against the Brewers this time, and we are only allowing digital payment, so we don't expect many(if any) cancellations from currently signed up players.

We don't wish to turn anyone away, so if you were planning on being a part of the fun, please sign up!
