    Unused Penalty Cut Scenes

    It's been known for a while that Tecmo Super Bowl had some text in it relating to penalties in addition to unused "Sound 32"
    You might have missed, like I did back in 2009, that there was an actual set of penalty cut screens still in the game.

     

    Today I stumbled across this and thanks to this handy spreadsheet, inserted them in place of the intro screen event to see them in action.

    Also I've uploaded a rom where the intro and start screen are replaced with the penalty cut screens in case you want to see it in action.

    Cool find.  Any guess how they would use it?  My guess it would of been one of those Tecmo Gods Probabilities.  Where you would have a big 4th and 3 play and get called for offsides.

     

    Potentially randomly though either could involve pre-snap arrow use. If you think about how awful this game would be if you had to play a chess game in patience in order to draw/avoid penalties by pre-snap movement, it makes me glad they didn't figure out how to implement this.

    When CX_ROM or Jstout (whichever one actually did) made this aware to me years ago, I thanked God this didn't happen. Why put any penalties in the game if you're only going to put two line-based ones in? Penalties would kill TSB.

    I think offsides and false start COULD work ok.  It would have to be random right after the ball was snapped since there is no play clock for hiking.

    Ha ha Ha!!!!!!!  ^^^This was FUNNY!!!....................................BTW, F*CK penalties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  (p.s.   I always wondered what sound 32 was...now the mystery has been solved!)

    cxrom found a bunch of 'deleted' scenes (including these penalty scenes) back in 08 that happen during play like telling you when you reach 100 yards rushing, 150 yards passing, etc. that i believe are found in the later games.


     


    try using 4E and 5D-6A for your event and see the other things (the incorrect tileset will show just like the penalty ones)


    check the spreadsheet for what does what. its on the 3rd tab in it's own box towards the bottom.

    looked at the spreadsheet and messed around with the ROM.  it was pretty fun!  awesome work!  is there a way to specify a specific halftime show to play during halftime or does that fall under the in-game cutscreen category?


     


    speaking of, any plans to break down how to implement the unused in-game cutscreens or at least examine how to replace them?  i guess that could be outside the scope of your ambitions.

    yes.  I have exploited this in my street rom (2012 and the 2013, and this years which is still sitting on my desktop).  even made a new song for the halftime.  I have heavily tweaked cutscreens in the street rom.

    awesome.  i've had that rom on my comp for quite some time now...mostly unplayed.  do you have ambitions to break down how it is done? :D
