View File Tecmo Super Bowl 2018 Presented by TecmoBowl.org Tecmo Super Bowl is the greatest sports video game of all time. This site's 11th yearly iteration updates Tecmo's NES classic with up-to-date rosters, graphics, schedules and play books for all 32 NFL squads. Playable on multiple platforms and operating systems via NES emulation software, Tecmo Super Bowl 2018 brings Nintendo's bone-crunching classic to today's computers and handheld devices. Prior to 1912 there was no end zone and the goal line and end line were the same. With the introduction of the forward pass, the end zone was devised as a way for a receiver to catch a ball inbounds. Goal posts remained on the goal line until 1927 when they were moved to the back of the endzone. While they remained there in the college game the NFL in 1933 moved them back to the goal line until 1974 when they were once again moved to the end line. Thus Super Bowls 1-8 plus any AFL seasons would have goalpost located at the front of the endzone and @fgqb#19nyj was kind enough to put together a tutorial on how to easily add this to your custom rom.

This is our annual collaborative Tecmo Super Bowl release of the current NFL season which is rated in what is considered to be "OG Style" which is another way of saying the range of ratings reflects the original release. This is very much a collaborative release as up until about a week ago I don't think I'd ever personally edited a mini-helmet and tend to stay away from graphics in general. Hopefully you'll enjoy and check out the other roms listed here which can have very innovative modifications, styles and advanced difficulty levels. Guys, For many years you have asked to make a Knobbe.org/TecmoBowl.org shirt. Well, guess what?! It finally happened! This is a ringspun cotton shirt with a soft ink print. It is super comfy. 100% of all shirt proceeds go to T-Borg. This is important because there is a big site upgrade coming and with that comes added expenses. The goal of this is to offset its cost and to help paying for all server costs moving forward. We have big plans for the Borg coming up. Let's do this! You can scoop the shirt here: tecmobowl.co/TborgTee $22+shipping $24 for 2XL & 3XL.

For as long as I can remember I have never thought that the official North American release day for Tecmo Super Bowl for the NES was known. Wikipedia, your encyclopedia in the cloud has always listed the North American release as "December, 1991" while listing a very specific "December 13th, 1991" for the Japanese release. Any other sort of internet deep dive would come up with the same result: no one listed the specific day on which this game was released. Try searching for "Tecmo Super Bowl release date" on Google or Bing now. The result is quite different because wikipedia is now different. I had noticed back in Oct of 2018 that the Tecmo Super Bowl Wikipedia page had been updated with the North American release day. Anyone can update a Wikipedia page and anyone can view what has been changed and who changed it. It's possible to create an account on Wikipedia and this will show you what pages or talk has come from this specific user. If you don't create an account, you can still update a page but the site will list your IP address instead. On Dec 10 of 2017 someone updated the release date of Tecmo Super Bowl from December of 1991 to Friday, December 13th, 1991 The updated user wasn't a registered account on Wikipedia so the IPv6 address "2600:1700:8880:6410:3935:833B:C73E:466F" was credited for the update. This is an address registered through AT&T and unless there is some other record associated with this address around this time there is no way to trace this short of having AT&T search through there records for it. When you drill down into the contributions of this user, you find a pattern: This person, or bot, systematically updated 23 different game release dates over the course of an hour on Dec 10, 2017. One could surmise from this list of completely random games that this was the work of someone with a general interest in NES games, not a Tecmo Super Bowl enthusiast. Why were these particular games selected and if someone did have a list of releases dates for video game in North America 25+ years ago where exactly did they get it? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/2600:1700:8880:6410:3935:833B:C73E:466F At the end of the day though the question remains: Was Tecmo Super Bowl released on Dec 13, 1991? The answer is doubtful and let me explain why. Tecmo was a Japanese company and like many while they maintained a office in the U.S. most were headquartered out of Japan. If you look through dates for video game releases you'll see a couple of things. Japanese video games are most often released on a Monday or a Friday US releases rarely, if ever, occur on the same calendar day as the Japanese release. It makes sense for a release to occur before a weekend, right? Friday before a weekend seems the most logical as a person might purchase the game with the intent of playing it for the weekend. You'll see that December 13, 1991 is a Friday. However, while it is Friday in Japan it's actually Thursday in the US. As you start to find some games with actual release dates in the US you'll see Thursday and my guess would be because this is Friday to the bosses back in Japan. If there was an official release date for Tecmo Super Bowl that paralleled the Japanese release, it would most likely be Thursday, Dec 12, 1991. It's most probable though that even though this would have been a very highly anticipated sequel worthy of an official release date that the company most likely shipped product to retailers to be sold upon arrival. While unsatisfying, "December, 1991" probably is most accurate. I would welcome any sort of help in answering this question and please comment on this article or send an email to [email protected]

The weekend after the NFL Championship games and before the Super Bowl is a football dead zone that is normally filled by the Pro Bowl game that most of the players don't take seriously and most football fans don't care to watch. It also happens to be a good time to put on a Tecmo Super Bowl tournament and this year there are three in different time zones for people to scratch that football itch. With that, let's take a look at this Saturday's upcoming tournaments in Seattle, Green Bay, and New York City. The Sixth Annual TUNDRA BOWL in Green Bay, Wisconsin under @RetroNathan has grown into one of the largest tournaments in the country and with the recent news of TECMO MADISON relocating to NYC it may proof to be the biggest event in the state for 2019. In terms of game play this is a very standard type of tournament where competitors play in pool play for seeding into an elimination tournament. A twist this year is the inclusion of a "Division 2" section for guys who want to play some Tecmo in more of a leisure instead of a competitive environment. Additionally, there is a blown out Friday night that will include a "2 ON 2 TECMO TOURNEY" where competitors will pair up on teams and RETROMANIA, an 8 game battle of overall video game skills. The events are open to walk-ins and more information can be found on the Tundra Bowl website A new event from a well established group is this year's BRONX BOWL. Typically we've seen a fall tournament from the NYC group but an expansion of @Bad Moon Rison favorite neighborhood bar and this relatively slow sports weekend were the inspiration for this event. The new venue was also the inspiration for a twist on format as group play will consist of matchup cards and the single elimination tournament will feature drawing teams to use for the rest of the tourney. You can still register here Last but not least is the very active PACIFIC NORTHWEST TECMO GROUP, known to many as the PNW. Long time member @DT. has come up with PNW HONBASHO I - BEHIND THE WOODEN SHED introducing some radical ideas. Play will start first with groups based on skill and then matchups will be determined based on your record and rank coming from these groups. If that wasn't enough action for you, the competitors will also be playing regular season games and whatever matchups might occur on the system they find themselves at. The plan is to end in a tourney that should culminate in championship games played during Super Bowl matchups. Show up and you're in. Find out more from the forum thread.

It's been known for a while that Tecmo Super Bowl had some text in it relating to penalties in addition to unused "Sound 32" You might have missed, like I did back in 2009, that there was an actual set of penalty cut screens still in the game. Today I stumbled across this and thanks to this handy spreadsheet, inserted them in place of the intro screen event to see them in action. Here's a video [size=4]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4iEaHDEp54 Also I've uploaded a rom where the intro and start screen are replaced with the penalty cut screens in case you want to see it in action. MARCH: 2. Jstout makes it so the computer QB will try to throw to an open receiver rather than relying only on the random chances set in the play design http://tecmobowl.org/topic/53837-cpu-find-open-receiver/ JUNE: 3. My hack allows for seperate pass block and run block skills. HP vs HP is used for run blocking and offensive RS vs defensive MS is used for pass blocking. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/55420-run-blockpass-block-hack/ 4. My hack that lets you throw lob passes by pressing the start button http://tecmobowl.org/topic/55448-use-start-instead-of-b-button-to-throw-lob-passes/ 5. My special teams hack that lets you return punts out of the endzone, fair catch punts, touchback kickoffs, take instant timeouts by pressing start, and down the ball by pressing select. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/55558-time-out-touchback-fair-catch-kneel-hack/ 6. Jstout posts a great guide about programming the NES complete with various examples. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/55469-nes-programming-info/ JULY 7. I post information on how to change the fumble and onside kick recovery time. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/55841-change-average-fumble-and-onside-recovery-time/ 8. My hack that lets you load in conditions at the start of a game. This makes it possible to have online leagues that carry over conditions week to week. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/56044-hack-to-load-in-starters-playbook-conditions-at-game-start/ AUGUST 9. My no huddle hack that gives the defense 1 second after the offense has picked their play to pick a play or else they get a play picked for them. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/56328-no-huddle-offense/page-2 SEPTEMBER 10. xplosv' hack that lets you jump and dive for passes by pressing B. He also creates a hack that lets you throw to receivers in "madden style" by pressing a button that targets a WR. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/57066-tsb-passing-revolution/ 11. I found a way to change the success rate when trying to bump a player off a grapple. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/56716-changing-the-bumping-probability-success-rate/ 12 My hack where diving ability is based on HP. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/57169-diving-time-based-on-hp/ OCTOBER My amazing hack where players engaged in grapples move forwards or backwards. This makes OL play look very realistic. It also allows high HP RB's to push low HP defenders forwards. http://tecmobowl.org/topic/57127-push-pull-hack-by-bruddog/ In progress 1. 2pt conversion- I just need time to work on this and squeeze it into the 32 team rom somehow Future ideas: 1. Ability table for certain teams to be better at causing fumbles 2. Ability table for player specific injury rates If I forgot anything major let me know

“We try to ensure that brothers and other guys traveling together don't end up in close proximity to one another,” he added. “No one wants to travel a long distance just to encounter one with whom they are familiar.” Chet Holzbauer, last year's champion, is the favorite in the Mark Clayton Region. He wouldn’t be mistaken as this year’s overall favorite either. He is 42-1 in his last six major Tecmo tournaments. "The Mark Clayton Region is stacked," said Tony James, a TecmoIX analyst. "This region is the home to defending Madison champion, and you would have to believe the overall No. 1 seed." Along with Chet, there is another Final Four participant from TecmoVIII in Matt Miller in the Mark Clayton Region. Another player in the Clayton region that reached the Elite 8 at TecmoVIII is Jeff B. "Getting out of this region will be nothing short of amazing," James said. Among three of last year's top eight is “Best in World” Sobhi, who is a former champion and four-time Final Four participant at Madison. He once made the finals three years in a row. Eric O'Dell, Detroit Kumite's fearless founder, is a force to be reckoned with, according to James. Alongside him is Louis Buennagel, Francis Buennagel's brother. Louis is looking to get out of his sibling's shadow. He’s coming off a finals appearance at the Boneyard Bowl in Cleveland. "I've gone this far without even mentioning some other strong players like Erik Merliss, Johnny Bailey and Immortl," James said. Like every other region, the Jim Edmunds Region has a lot of power players sprinkled throughout. Groups O and P contain two online virtuosos who have proven their ability to back up live play in other tournaments. Kyle Miller should plow through Group O with little resistance, much like last year's group play where he only gave up 3 points in all three games, according to TecmoIX analyst Erik Bergstrom. Francis Buennagel — also known as Mort — who was featured heavily in the NFL Films documentary, will be the one to watch in Group P. He's the lone participant with Madison experience against virtual unknowns in that group. "Whether this helps or hurts him remains to be seen," Bergstrom said of Mort. "It's possible he may have to rely on his lucky cartridge lick sooner than he anticipates." Only one participant in Group Q comes with no Madison experience. It may be a wild chase to see who advances from there, Bergstrom noted. Could it be Eric D. who shocked the world by beating Sobhi in last year's tournament? Perhaps the returning Seth B. is ready to continue his winning ways, going far in TecmoVII. He was absent in last year's bracket. In Group R, Erik J. stands as a favorite, and being a Madison native, he's got home field advantage in a group of mainly newcomers. Another former Madison champion resides in Group S, Kevin Miller, of Milwaukee. A somewhat early exit last year should have Miller hungry to 'buzzsaw' through his group, according to Bergstrom. Group T should prove to give off the most volume out of the Edmunds region, with every participant coming with Madison experience, including Tony Orenga and his cheering faction of followers. Group U comes with perhaps the most participants with something to prove, mostly all having wins in tournament play. Troy Hansen is the one to keep an eye on out of this group, with a solid third place in last year's Madison tournament. Hansen hit a snag in the Midwest tournament in Ohio afterwards and will most likely be looking to the hallowed grounds of Madison to return to glory. Luke Carlberg and Jim Bontempo, the only two-time Madison winner, highlight the Mark Duper Region. Carlberg is 26-2 in his last four major Tecmo tournaments. "With the exemption of a hand full of online players, this has to be the greatest assemblage of Tecmo Super Bowl players ever,” Carlberg said. “The competitive skill level is so high that once you get to the field of 56 every game is a dog fight. Jon Jones, better known as Daboy, is always a player to look out for every year. He also can make a run in the Duper Region. Other notable players in the Mark Duper Region are Chris Vogt, who is fittingly labeled the “Dan Marino of Tecmo,” James T. and Matt O’Toole. Juicer Adam G., better known as Garbage, also has a shot at advancing far in the Duper region. The Jim Jensen Region appears to be the least likely group up for the task, said TecmoIX analyst Matt Knobbe. While group bye favorites Josh Holzbauer and Matt Vogt have a great shot at making the Elite 8, it's simply been a while since either has been crowned a champion. Well known for their online as well as tournament play, Derek Ruble and Brent B. are threats to go on long tournament runs, said Knobbe, who operates TecmoBowl.org. With over 30 tournament games under their belt, Madison veterans Rico R., Kyle F. and former champion Peter K. are capable of running the table into the finals if they've worked off their rust. The tournament format has changed for the first time since TecmoIII. "Rather than dividing participants into groups of four and conducting a round-robin, this year's group play will consist of various 8-man double-elimination tournaments," the Madison website said. Group Winners and Group Runners-Up of each double-elimination tournament will advance to a larger “Bracket”. The initial rounds in the Bracket will be single-elimination. Double-elimination will be introduced for the Elite Eight Bracket, and the TecmoIX champion will eventually be crowned. “Having a double elimination final eight,” Knobbe said, “will possibly be the greatest display of Tecmo Super Bowl talent of this century.” Chris Vogt is a national Tecmo Super Bowl writer and can be followed on Twitter @@vogtcd. Matt Knobbe, Erik Bergstrom and Tony James contributed to this story.

He was featured on NFL Film's documentary on Tecmo Super Bowl. It was only fitting that he become the first person known to propose via Tecmo Super Bowl. After receiving a beatdown from his soon to be fiance, Chris brought up a hacked rom popping the question. Congratulations from us all. You can see the full video here

I don't know if Ken Stabler plays Tecmo, but in this video Tecmo plays Ken Stabler. This reenactment of the Holy Roller play from 1978 is a teaser for the upcoming installment of the Tecmo Legacy League ahead of its own 1978 season. Be sure to check out at http://www.scottzolak.com/tll/index.php. We're just about to begin the 1977 playoffs, so visit the site for live games, historical news article, stats, and more

We've recently been advised that NFL Films' piece on Tecmo Super Bowl will air on the following dates: 10/22/12 @ 12:30 a.m. EST (ESPN 2) 10/24/12 @ 2:30 p.m. EST (ESPN 2) 10/26/12 @ 4:30 p.m. EST (NFL Network) 10/27/12 @ 1:30 p.m. EST (NFL Network) These are tentative dates/times, so "check your local listings." Run time is 30 minutes (really 22 mins of air time), so we're not sure how much time will be devoted to the Madison Tournament or its participants. That this is even airing, however, is pretty amazing.

All, Before this site existed, Puretecmo was around allowing people to connect via 56k modems to play Tecmo Super Bowl over the internet. In the following decade the site as helped many players, both offline and online, become better Tecmo players by honing and fine tuning their strategy over the years. For the last several years I've been running both sites to a point and the various disconnects between the online playing leagues and the producers of hacked roms has always confused me a bit. Finally we have the capability to marry these two sites and I've scheduled it for this weekend. This has been something that the members of Puretecmo have known about for a while but I wanted to wait until I finalized a moving date to announce on this site. Be prepared for downtime all Saturday and to welcome the new and old members of Puretecmo.
