problems using tsbm 2000 to edit tsb 1 for sega

I've tried to edit tsb 1 for sega and everytime i tried to import the data I got an error message basically stating that the file was not supported. I think it was a .smd file. I tried downloading a different tsb 1 sega rom, this time a .bin file and it imported the data but not until I told the manager it was a tsb1 sega rom on the menu, autodetect would not allow me to import it giving me again the same error message. After I edited the rom I tried playing it and loads okay until it is supposed to display the start menu with the nfl shield then the game locks up and the screen goes black. The second tsb rom I downloaded works perfectly fine on my gens as long as I don't edit it. Anybody have a clue about what I'm doing wrong?
