Ken Griffey Jr Baseball - All-Time Greats

View File

This is a custom hack of the original KGB SNES game, but with all-time legends on every team's roster!

I tried to include a bit of every championship era a team had on each roster, spanning all 98 seasons in MLB's live-ball era from 1920-2019.

ROSTER STRUCTURES

I kept the game's basic structure and fundamentals for rosters intact. What this means is that every team has 5 starting pitchers, 5 relievers, 8 (or 9 in the AL) starting position players and 7 (or 6 in the AL) bench position players. I also stayed true to the original's roster makeup so that nearly every bench has a backup catcher, 3 backup infielders and 3 backup outfielders -- except in the AL, where the DH's natural position dictates the remaining bench positions (example - David Ortiz's natural position  was 1B, so the Red Sox only have 2 IFs on the bench). I think there are 1 or 2 teams that may have 4 OFs or 4 IFs on the bench, but the rest stay true to that formula. Generally, a player appears on the team he played his best seasons for. But there are some exceptions in order to get as many deserving players in the game as I could (example - Mike Piazza had his best seasons with the Dodgers from '93-'97, but he is the Mets' starting catcher in this game). Also, I made a rule that no player can appear more than once in the game. So you will not see Barry Bonds on the Pirates and the Giants, Reggie on the A's and Yankees, Bic Mac on the A's and Cardinals or Frank Robinson on the Reds and the Orioles.

PLAYER STATS

Player's stats are based on their 7 peak consecutive seasons of their career, with the majority of those seasons for the team they represent in this version of the game. For example, Frank Thomas' stats and ratings in this game are his 1991-1997 seasons averaged out. These same basic rules apply to pitchers as well for their ratings, ERA, Wins, Losses and Saves stats. Also, in order to really see every player on an equal playing field, the 7-year peak season stats/ratings are pro-rated. So for instance, if you look at Tony Gwynn's stats in the game, those are his 7-year peak numbers pro-rated to 500 ABs. All position players' stats are pro-rated to 500 ABs. All starting pitchers' stats are pro-rated to 32 GS. And all relievers' stats are pro-rated to 60 G. This allows you to look at the players on even ground, so a player who may have usually had 720 plate appearances won't have bloated stats over a guy who may have only normally had 500 plate appearances during his 7-year peak.

PLAYER RATINGS/SKILLS

Player's skill ratings also had a specific system I used. Using players' 7-year peak season numbers and pro-rated to 500 AB/32 GS/60 G, here were the ranking systems I used for each skill rating:

HITTERS

BAT uses the hitter's batting average in their 7-yr peak. Depending on the era the player played in, this can slightly change. So for example, if a player played during a high offensive era like 1919-1940 or 1994-2005, it's slightly adjusted and accounts for that.

POW uses the hitter's home runs as well as Isolated Power and Slugging% in their 7-yr peak.

SPD uses the hitter's Stolen Base attempts + 3Bs in their 7-yr peak

DEF uses the hitter's fielding percentage as well as DRS (Defensive Runs Saved), dWAR in their 7-yr peak. In addition, I also took outfielders' assists into account. Likewise for catchers, their CS% was also used and plays a part in their DEF rating. With some exceptions here and there (like Jeter), most players with multiple Gold Gloves almost always received a 8 or better DEF rating. However, there are a few players who had great defense (9 or 10) that never won a GG and also a few who have won GG and had mediocre or only slightly above avg defense (Jose Altuve and Derek Jeter are good examples of this).

PITCHERS

SPD uses the pitcher's SO/9 innings pitched in their 7-yr peak.

CON uses the pitcher's WHIP as well as FIP in their 7-yr peak.

FAT uses the starting pitcher's innings pitched per games started in their 7-yr peak and a reliever's innings pitched per games played in their 7-yr peak period.

PLAYER'S PHYSICAL APPEARANCES

I tried to be as faithful as I could to all player's physical appearances. Whether that was physical stature and physique, batting stances, hair length and color, facial hair or skin tones. I think I did a decent job and hope you feel like the players match their real-life counterparts as much as this game allows it to. If anybody notices a mistake or something that may need to be fixed, please let me know! I will fix it and re-upload an updated version.

Please leave any feedback, criticism, suggestions or comments on here! I'd love to know what anybody else thinks that downloads and plays this. Also, please check-out my '98 expansion teams addition where the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Devil Rays are represented.

ENJOY!!!!

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you guys are enjoying it! Also, I will fix the error with Killebrew being a lefty in the game.

Speaking of updates, I actually did a more recent version of my all-time release over this past summer.

A few roster changes here an there, some lineup shifting and rotation shuffles. But the biggest change I did was regarding player ratings. I originally used player's 5-yr career best averages, but felt like there were too many red and orange (i.e., really darn good) guys in the game and it was slightly unbalanced. On this newer version, I decided to take a players' 7 year career best seasons instead of just 5, as well as making the rule that the 7 seasons had to be in succession or in a row (exceptions were military service or if a player missed the majority of a season due to injury). I also made it a rule that whichever team the player represented, his 7 year span had to mostly be on that team. So for instance, Mark McGwire is on the A's in the game, so his 7-yr span is 1989-1997 (1993 and 1994 were skipped since he missed most of those seasons).

The result of using the 7-yr spans instead of 5 definitely made the game more balanced with less red and orange players and even some lime and teal green players appearing.

I also fine tuned how I determined a player's skill ratings, which also helped balance the game out more.

Anyways, I will post the new updated versions if anyone has interest on here. I feel like the new versions are a much better experience and more balanced and fun. Some teams are still better than others, but overall, there are not as many near perfect players and this makes for a more even playing field and enjoyable game.

Let me know and I will post the new versions!

Been a long time since I have posted on here. So I recently went over my all-time greats hacks and started "updating" the rosters to be a little more modern. I was watching a YT video of someone playing the hack and noticed some comments were saying they felt as though some more modern players should have been in the game.

So basically I am removing most of the dead-ball era and pre-expansion era (before 1960) players unless they are huge household names. So guys like Ruth, Williams, Musial, Gehrig, Mantle, Cobb, etc. will still be present. But the lesser known today (but still great) players have been removed. Not sure if anybody has interest in this, but I will post it for on here if enough people reply on here. I also have added a few players to the teams that now have a good 4-6 yrs of MLB experience and are worthy of making these rosters now (for example, Tatis, Judge and Lindor are now all present).

One other thing I decided to do for this newer version of the hack to sort of add more excitement to the game is apply the Game Genie codes that give you a strikeout after only 2 strikes and a walk after only 2 balls. I also applied the cheat code on this new version that basically fixes the SPD and DEF for players on defense. So SPD now affects a player on the basepaths as well as out in the field and the DEF rating is now strictly for the player's arm strength only. So now a player like say Don Mattingly or Pulols will be amazing in the field but will still be semi-slow like they were in real-life.

I am going to post the roster lineups I am probably going to go with in the next few days and would love any feedback or criticism. Let me know if you think a player doesn't deserve to be in this game. Or a player who you think does.

So sorry for the delay, work got super busy and just never got around to posting.

So here are the rosters I currently have in place for the new and revised All-Time Greats mod. I welcome any feedback! Let me know if you think someone should be replaced or changed.  I'll post the NL rosters tonight and post the AL rosters tomorrow morning.

Here are update mods for the All-Time greats hack. This version has way more modern players on the rosters and is basically an expansion era game (1961-now), save for a select few HoFers from the 1915-1959 era of baseball (guys like Cobb, Ruth, Williams, etc. are still here). As I mentioned before, I also applied the Game Genie code into this mod so the Speed and Defense ratings are unique and separate. So now the player's SPD rating affects their base-running on the basepaths AND their defensive speed out on the field, and the DEF rating now only affects their throwing strength/accuracy like it was probably meant to. Also, applied the mod where 2 strikes gets you an out and 3 balls gets you a walk. This makes the games even quicker and more balanced and slightly more low-scoring and stats a little more realistic (just a little lol, c'mon, this is Griffey!).

And just like the previous version, I have an expansion one where the Astros are replaced with a roster of Rays and the Rangers are the Dbacks. I did those teams in order to get the stadiums and team colors similar, even though I realize the Rays and Dbacks are in the wrong leagues they are from. If stadiums don't mean anything, I can do another version where maybe the Expos are replaced by the Dbacks and the Mariners are replaced with the Rays? That would have them in the correct leagues at least and similar team colors still.

Let me know if you think I should make more roster changes.  Enjoy and...PLAY BALL!!!
