NFL 2018-2019 Season Discussion

Recommended Posts

Congratulations, Philadelphia Eagles for ending your 57-year championship drought and taking Super Bowl LII.

Might as well start this new thread for a new season, since Maynard seems to have vanished off the face of the earth at around the time of the Super Bowl.  Hope he's doing well.

So discuss the current NFL season here.

Two good dudes, to two good teams.  I'm calling it.  Case Keenum vs. Tyrod Taylor in the AFC Championship.

And the Browns get their revenge.

Move over John Elway, you prick.

I'm a bit disappointed that Hali and Johnson couldn't finish their careers as Chiefs. I get they want to get younger, but at least keep some semblance of veteran leadership besides Berry and Houston around.

Titans picking up Dion Lewis and Malcolm Butler....I like it. Titans GM Jon Robinson has been doing a great job building this team up so far. I like Butler's tenacity and Lewis' versatility, they should work well in the Titans system. Titans slowly becoming the Patriots of the South....now if only we can eventually get just one Lombardi....then I can die in peace.

Bridgewater is becoming a Jet.  I'm gonna go out of my way to suspect that unless whatever rookie QB the Bills end up selecting in the draft is able to thrive, that they're gonna get royally screwed.

I'm all but guaranteeing that the Browns will select a QB in the draft, even with Tyrod Taylor in their roster.  Because that's all the Browns are good for; destroying the careers and reputations of countless QB's everywhere.  Then again, given that the Browns have well over a hundred million in salary cap space and they haven't spent a dime of it anywhere, it's become especially clear that the Browns refuse to actually invest in any actual talent and that Jimmy Haslam is simply hoarding the money for himself.  Not that most highly respectable players would even want to be a part of that organization.

Teams that still need a QB?

AFC East:  Tom Brady won't be playing forever.  The Jets should at the very least consider finding a replacement for Teddy Bridgewater in case he is incapable of staying healthy.  The Bills literally have nobody to lean on.  And while the Dolphins may have Jay Cutler and Ryan Tannehill on their roster, they can still do better.  As for who should select a QB in the first round of the draft, I'll go with the Bills since they're the one team that doesn't have one.

AFC North:  Similar to Brady, Big Ben isn't going to be in Pittsburgh for very long.  Joe Flacco is pretty mediocre, though a new QB isn't entirely necessary (if they're going to draft one, do so at the third or fourth rounds at the worst).  And the Browns?  Hah!  What they need is a new owner, GM, and coach, and to blow the entire organization up and rebuild in a few years.  The upshot is that the last two teams to go winless wound up making the playoffs three years later though, so perhaps it's not all bad for Cleveland.  Honestly, the only team that really shouldn't be fishing for a new QB is Cincinnati.  Ultimately, I think the Browns will select a QB first overall unless they're delusional enough to believe that Tyrod Taylor will be their lord and savior.

AFC South:  Shockingly enough, all four of these teams look good.  Though if the situation with Andrew Luck looks pretty awful, the Colts might consider looking for a new QB.  But they probably won't since this isn't exactly a Peyton Manning-type situation here.

AFC West:  The Chiefs already drafted a successor to Alex Smith, and the Raiders have Derek Carr as their long-term solution.  Like with Brady and Roethlisberger, the Chargers might consider drafting a successor to Philip Rivers.  Even with the acquisition of Case Keenum, the Broncos should still consider looking for a QB in the draft--even if they believe Keenum is enough to hold the fort for the season, at the very least, trade up so that you can acquire a QB as a secondary concern.

NFC East:  The Eagles have both Carson Wentz and Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.  The Cowboys look set longterm with Dak Prescott.  So that pretty much leaves us with the Giants and Redskins.  Like with Big Ben, Brady, and Rivers before them, the Giants should consider looking for a successor to Eli Manning.  That just leaves us with the Washington Redskins, who are now royally screwed like no team has ever been screwed before.

NFC North:  The Vikings have scored a major jackpot in Kirk Cousins.  Don't fuck this opportunity up!  The Lions look pretty secure with Matthew Stafford.  And the Bears already have their guy in Trubisky, who wasn't terribly awful in his rookie year, albeit played cautiously.  And while Aaron Rodgers can still play at an elite level, some concern should be made for a possible successor to Rodgers, or at the very least, a feasible replacement in case he breaks his collarbone again.

NFC South:  The Falcons and Panthers already have their QB situations secured.  Drew Brees is one of the very best QB's that have ever played the game...and even then, more than anybody else other than the Patriots, the Saints probably need to consider looking for a successor to Breesus.  The Buccaneers?  Eh...they probably should consider finding another QB, but not in the first round in the draft.

NFC West:  Off the top of my head, there are only two NFC teams that absolutely need to pick up a QB in the draft, and five teams in the league altogether--the Jets, Bills, Broncos, Redskins, and Cardinals (I'm not counting the Browns since what they need is a coup d'état to usurp Haslam from power, and a roster that doesn't look like 53 giant pieces of shit with orange hues here and there).  The 49ers, Seahawks, and Rams already have their men in the foreseeable future (although the 49ers spending habits this early on in the rebuild is rather alarming).  The Seahawks are royally screwed in the foreseeable future as well, unless they manage to arrange an elite offensive line to protect Russell Wilson (because he clearly wasn't the issue with the Seahawks last season--on the contrary, he was pretty much the only reason the Seahawks were still in the playoff hunt heading into Week 17) and find a kicker who isn't haunted by a chipshot field goal whiff.

So teams that really should prioritize in finding a QB are the Jets, Bills, Broncos, Redskins, and Cardinals.  And maybe the Browns, though they pretty much need to fix everything, including the front office and owner.  Teams that ultimately should consider finding successors are the Patriots, Steelers, Chargers, Giants, Packers, and Saints.  The Dolphins, Ravens, Colts, and Bucs should consider other QB candidates, but it shouldn't be their top priority.  And the Bengals, Titans, Jaguars, Texans, Chiefs, Raiders, Cowboys, Eagles, Vikings, Lions, Bears, Falcons, Panthers, Seahawks, 49ers, and Rams all look good to go as far as the QB position goes.

So, yeah!  Half the league doesn't even need to worry about the QB position at this point in time.

Nice job, Titans!  I have a feeling both will perform very well with TEN as they did in NE. Solid pick-ups. Really hate to see them go, but this will keep my “around the league” interest up.

Plus it worked out pretty well for the last team who signed two former Pats, RB/DEF (Philly - Blount/Long).

Also Danny ‘Best Hands All Time’ Amendola going to MIA :-(

Guy turned into a juiced Jerry Rice every playoffs. Hate to see him go as well, but I know he’ll crush it in that Miami sun (On and Off the field)

Here's to hoping the Saints don't fuck up everything from last season's success. Knowing their history in the Sean Payton era how they follow up winning seasons by going 7-9, I'm just praying that this isn't another year of Drew Brees' career wasted.

R.I.P. Tom Benson. He leaves behind a rather complicated history in New Orleans. The SB win really changed everything with how he was viewed by pretty much everyone. The biggest issue is almost moving the team to San Antonio in the wake of Katrina. He did the right thing by keeping the team here, as well as rebuilding the Superdome after it's massive damage. I'm praying I never have to witness seeing the Saints move in my lifetime, cause it would be the one thing to make me give up the NFL all together.

I remember back in the day, Benson used to be criticized and labeled a cheap owner. During the 90's, this was the reaction to how quickly the Dome Patrol defense was ripped apart in free agency and due to the lack of any splash signings on offense (This isn't even technically true, because they did sign Michael Haynes and Jim Everett, which everyone forgets about here cause they didn't work out). The major criticisms came with Sam Mills' departure and how badly that was handled by the organization. Mills said that he wanted to stay in New Orleans but felt unwanted when they didn't offer him a contract, and only did so after the Panthers offered him something. Today, Mills has a statue in Carolina and is seen as a hero to that organization (please for the love of everything, get this man in the Hall of Fame. My favorite Saints player back in my childhood, R.I.P.)

The SB win really changed everything for his legacy here. Probably the best thing he did after that was buying the NBA team and then trying to get the rights to the old Jazz name back. Though he failed with the name, he did at least make sure we'd have an NBA team here along with our Saints. R.I.P.

Same here. All arm but no accuracy. Plus he under-performed in Wyoming. People fall in love with the measurables and the arm strength but who cares how far and hard he can throw it if he can't hit the side of a barn?

Not real sure how I feel about the Giants going running back with the 2nd overall pick given how short the shelf-life tends to be.

Latest buzz has them looking to trade out. Guess we'll find out tonight ;)

I was hoping Anthony Miller could be Anthony Miller's son,

but it turns out he's just another 5'11 WR (Anthony Miller), 30 years Anthony Miller's junior ...

I bet there's another potential draftee Tecmo-kid, though, we just haven't found yet

Week 2's now in the books.  Now it's time to pick the Week 3 games.  I'm gonna follow schedule from Tecmonster's 2018-2019 rom from now on, so here's what I've got:

New York Jets @ Cleveland Browns
New Orleans Saints @ Atlanta Falcons
Green Bay Packers @ Washington Redskins
      Indianapolis Colts @ Philadelphia Eagles
      Buffalo Bills @ Minnesota Vikings
      Oakland Raiders @ Miami Dolphins
      Denver Broncos @ Baltimore Ravens
      Cincinnati Bengals @ Carolina Panthers
New York Giants @ Houston Texans
      Tennessee Titans @ Jacksonville Jaguars
San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs
Los Angeles Chargers @ Los Angeles Rams
      Dallas Cowboys @ Seattle Seahawks
      Chicago Bears @ Arizona Cardinals
New England Patriots @ Detroit Lions
Pittsburgh Steelers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

      So come on in!

      @bruddog
      @gojiphen malor
      @Knobbe
      @BigCat71
      @manYo720
      @Miles Prower

Also, for future reference, if you don't specify who's going to win by game time, it counts as a loss against you.  If you honestly cannot bring yourself to guess right away, you have until the games start to come up with a winner.  Or you can be the gutsy one and call a tie.

Anyways, I'll make my picks later.  I need to think about my choices before I settle on anything concrete.

Time for Week 2, everybody!  Here are this week's games:

      Baltimore Ravens @ Cincinnati Bengals
      Carolina Panthers @ Atlanta Falcons
Los Angeles Chargers @ Buffalo Bills
Minnesota Vikings @ Green Bay Packers
      Houston Texans @ Tennessee Titans
Cleveland Browns @ New Orleans Saints
Miami Dolphins @ New York Jets
Kansas City Chiefs @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Philadelphia Eagles @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
      Indianapolis Colts @ Washington Redskins
Arizona Cardinals @ Los Angeles Rams
Detroit Lions @ San Francisco 49ers
      Oakland Raiders @ Denver Broncos
New England Patriots @ Jacksonville Jaguars
New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys
      Seattle Seahawks @ Chicago Bears

      Make your picks!  Here's mine!

Ravens, Panthers, Chargers, Packers, Texans, Saints, Jets, Chiefs, Eagles, Redskins, Rams, 49ers, Broncos, Patriots, Giants, and Bears.

Survival pick for this week would have to be the Saints or 49ers.  A lot of tossup games this week as well.  Though the biggest question mark is the Packers.  If Aaron Rodgers is ruled out for the week, I'm gonna change my pick to the Vikings.

Edit:  I changed one of my picks.  Instead of thinking the Falcons will win, I am now leaning more towards Carolina.  Hopefully, I don't regret that pick.  And since Aaron Rodgers is back out on the practice field, I am still leaning more towards Green Bay.  But if he ends up getting ruled out tomorrow, I'm gonna change my pick to Minnesota.  Everything else will be left as is.

I'm going to simply keep track of everybody's scores manually.  Each person has until five minutes before the game starts to put their Pick'ems in.  And I'll be keeping track of the tallies for each week, and for the whole year in general.  As an added bonus, I'll even keep track of how many times somebody wins a particular week.  But with the highest tally after the Super Bowl wins.

Two rules!  You got until five games before the game starts to put a pick in.  Otherwise, it will be treated as a non pick.  In addition, every pick must be made in a single comment.  You can discuss things if you want.  But for the sake of keeping track of everybody's choices, all picks--even if you change your mind later on--must be located in the same comment.  Otherwise, it will be treated as a non pick.

With that said, let's cover the games that are to take place in Week 1!

      ATL @ PHI
      PIT @ CLE
      CIN @ IND
      TEN @ MIA
      SF @ MIN
      HOU @ NE
      TB @ NO
      JAX @ NYG
      BUF @ BAL
      KC @ LAC
      SEA @ DEN
      WAS @ ARI
      DAL @ CAR
      CHI @ GB
      NYJ @ DET
      LAR @ OAK

Here are my weekly picks:  Atlanta, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Minnesota, New England, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Baltimore, Chargers, Broncos, Cardinals, Panthers, Packers, Lions, and Rams.  My Survivor pick of the week, however, is Pittsburgh over Cleveland (yes, a road team being chosen as the Survivor Pick of the Week; it is the Browns, after all).  And my toughest pick to make was Arizona over Washington.

Ok.  Before the Season starts, full-throw I gotta grandiose little idea for a "game" we could play.

Name a number - 1 through 99 - and the Player you FIRST associate with it.  YOU CAN BE SELECTIVE, THOUGH!  If, on first association you think of a player you don't like (for whatever reason), you can think the next player, and speak it, instead...  We only want players you associate in a GOOD way!  [NOTE:  Doesn't have to be "the best" player you think of for a given number, though.]

By the end, we'll tally all the numbers, and define - by observing who had the most repeat associations among us - the Goodest *Player*... by jersey-number;  and, overall.

Here, I'll start randomly and begin with the # 75.  You all chime in with your 75 (can be the same as mine/ anyone else's), and then throw out some #'s/ players you think of.

For me, when I think of 75, I immediately think:  Joe Greene

There are 4x roms in the zip - actually, only two games (ROM 1 and ROM 2), but see below for reasoning for the extra two roms
the zip also contains a basic readme, and a png image of a playbook key

View attachment: Street Tecmo 2013 v1 also with no p2.zip

View attachment: tsb street var shots 1.png

      Documentation

There are two ROMs, each with 16 NFL teams.
The only difference between the ROMs are the teams/rosters/names, etc. and the color of the endzones.

Based on Jstout's "CIFL 7-on-7" NES Tecmo Super Bowl ROM
Upgraded plays (enhanced for the street)
      50 yard "field"

COM v MAN (you can play as player 2 if you set up your emulator)
Competitive COM for challenging Season fun

No "Out of Bounds" - you can run into the walls

New Halftime and New Halftime Song
      Reduced Cutscreens

Game plays very fast (almost every variable is sped up greatly)
      Turnovers and scoring are common
      No punts (just "kicker")
      Countless Graphic changes

      In-game playbook changing
Cool new Uniforms (some throwbacks in there, too)
      12-game season with 8-team playoffs

      "Heroes" - it's like a mini-game
I have set up the heroes from the original Tecmo Super Bowl game
AFC and NFC - using their original ratings (although some are decreased because it's played as pro-bowl game)
but, it has a totally different feel and challenge than the other modern "street" teams

      Pass Accuracy is completion/int variable
KR return at their own Max Speed
      Player 2 condition indicator fixed

      No pass-defender auto-dive
      Quicker dives for defenders

      AI hacks
      Passing Game Hacks

Bruddog's OL/DL Differential (more random popcorn in the trenches)

HP Hack (MAN v MAN "popcorn" and/or "mash")
Also, HP is quantized to a scale of "0 to 3 extra presses" that are added to grapple counter)
      6-25 HP = 0 extra press
      31-50 HP = 1 extra press
      56-75 HP = 2 extra press
      81-100 HP = 3 extra press

      -----
EXTRA ("no p2" versions): the (main) 1st version of TSB Street posted on 9-5-12 has a very cool hack (thanks xplozv) that lets you play as the 2nd player (2nd side) vs COM (also in season mode).
A requirement is that you need to have your emulator set up such that you have control of the 2nd player controller (or if using an actual NES, a controller in port 2!) . In the emulator I use, I have them both programmed to the same controller/buttons.
If you use an emulator that will not allow you to program or play as a 2nd player controller, I have provided a set of roms with the additional "no p2" characters in the rom filename. this "no p2" will play just like the original TSB - MAN will always be player one side when playing COM.

Therefore I have updated the zip to include these "no p2" versions. I also updated the readme in the zip. No other changes have been made.
      --

We must thank the following, because this rom would not be possible without their past or present help:
jstout, bruddog, cxrom, bad_al, average tsb player, elway, knobbe, bodom, and xplozv

(jstout did not have any direct hand in the making of this ROM, but we thought we should credit him because we used his CIFL 7-on-7 ROM as our base)

      --

it's a party, jerk. so enjoy it.
