With 10 Days to go before the Tournament the Atlanta Falcons come in as #10 on the list of teams to look out for in the Hardcore Format. The 3rd best Wide Receiver in the game, Andre Rison, gives the Falcons tremendous flexibility on offense. Put Andre Rison in at Running Back and you now have elite speed in the backfield tied for the 3rd fastest in the game. With fairly average QB’s to throw the ball to Rison, this is probably the Falcon's best option. Shawn Collins and Mike Rozier still give the Falcons solid speed options at receiver with their 50 Max Speed Ratings. Need a big catch at the end of the half or game? Just sub Andre Rison back in at receiver and chuck up that Hail Mary, he has a 75 Reception Rating. The overall effectiveness of their defense is about the same. They don’t have many options outside of Deion Sanders, but Neon Deion is so fast that he can mask the faults of the entire defense. He is the fastest defender in the game with 75 Max Speed Rating tied with a few other players. An experienced player manning Deion Sanders for an entirety of the game will be tough to move the ball against, so make sure you put a few running plays in your playbook that run up. This could potentially disrupt their entire defensive strategy.

9 Days left until the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship and the Cleveland Browns come in as the #9 Team to look out for.  When it comes to the Tier 5 Teams, QB Browns / Bernie Kosar is going to be the biggest difference maker in the entire Tier.  He is a Top 5 QB in the game with a 75 Pass Control, which is tied for 2nd best accuracy with Warren Moon.  Not only that, he has a 25 Max Speed, which makes him a scrambling QB with the 3rd highest speed for a Quarterback.  With that kind of speed at QB, you can open up the entire playbook, not having to worry about any pesky nose tackles that try to dive at you at the snap of the ball.    The Brown’s offense however is just as slow as the rest of Tier 5.  Their one saving grace is go-to possession receiver Webster Slaughter and his 63 Reception Rating.  QB Browns can throw the ball up to Slaughter when in a bind without much fear of an interception.  The 75 PC + 63 REC combo of these two will result in some covered catches and very few interceptions, especially in this Tier.   As far as their defense, it is lackluster to say the least.  They have a few decent defenders in Mike Johnson and Frank Minnifield with their 50 Max Speed, but they are both on the bottom side of the defense which is not ideal.   This forces you to man top side defender Tony Blaylock with his 44 Max Speed for much of the game.  Even though Blaylock is slow for a manned defender, he does have an above average Interception Rating for a Linebacker at 38.  That could go a long way against the Patriots’ and Colts’ poor QB play in Tier 5.

With 8 Days remaining to sign up for the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship, the Miami Dolphins come in at the #8 team to look out for.  It’s no secret that Dan Marino has the deadliest passing speed / pass control combo in the game.  Many times his cannon of an arm alone is enough to get the win.  Well in this free for all format the Dolphins are no longer one dimensional on offense, which makes them even more dangerous.  Putting Mark “Super” Duper at running back with his 50 Max Speed behind the Dolphins stacked offensive line is the just the help Marino has been looking for.  With Super Sub Jim Jensen coming off the bench with his 69 Reception Rating, the Dolphins don’t really lose anything in the passing game either.  The combo of Jensen, Mark Clayton with his 69 Reception Rating, Pro Bowl Tight End Ferrell Edmunds, and Duper out of the backfield give Marino all the weapons he needs.  Just make sure to use at least 2 Shotgun plays on offense, otherwise Marino is easy bait for opposing Nose Tackles.  He is indeed the slowest QB in the game with only a 6 Max Speed.  The Dolphins defense is laid out nicely with above average defenders on each level of the defense.  Right End Jeff Cross is a huge factor on the line with his 56 Max Speed, Offerdahl is a good speed and coverage linebacker with 56 Max Speed and 31 Interceptions, and Louis Oliver / Jarvis Williams are great interchangeable safeties with the exact same ratings, 56 Max Speed / 56 Interceptions / 56 Hitting Power as their highlights.

With 7 Days to go before the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardocore Championship, there are 6 spots open on the day of the deadline for us to offer some awesome extra prizes.  The team that comes in as the 7th team to look out for in the format is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Wayne Haddix the top cornerback on Tampa is arguably the best defender in the game.  He is the fastest defender with a 75 Max Speed and #2 in Interceptions also with a 75 Rating.   When Haddix is manned by an elite player, he can simply shut down your whole offense.  The rest of their secondary isn't super fast, but they all are a 50 Interception Rating or higher.  This makes Tampa Bay one of the absolute best teams to defend high-powered passing teams.  Robinson also provides Haddix with some solid bottom side of the defense help with a 50 Max Speed and 56 Interceptions.  Tampa's offense isn't anything special, but the 31 Max Speed of their QB Vinny Testaverde gives them a fighting chance on offense in any game.  He is tied for the second fastest QB in the game.  Vinny also has slow passing speed and above average Pass Control Rating with 56, which makes him a dangerous thrower for random jumping catches.  Their Running Back Gary Anderson with a 50 Max Speed at least makes them respectable in the running game even though their offensive line is one of the worst in the game.  Mark Carrier is the one wide receiver with a decent 44 Max Speed and 63 Reception Rating, which gives Vinny one guy he can throw to that can make a difference.

It's now 6 days before the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship, so who is the #6 team to look out for?  The Los Angeles Raiders!  The Raiders simply have the fastest offense in the game including the fastest overall player.  You might have heard of this guy named Bo Jackson with his 75 Max Speed!  Supporting him is a whole arsenal of Max Speed Players: Willie Gault (63), Sam Graddy (63), Marcus Allen (56), Tim Brown (56), and Mervyn Fernandez (50).  With that kind of speed in the Hardcore Format the configuration possibilities are endless.  If the Raiders had a better QB with some accuracy, they would easily be a Tier 1 team, but they certainly can compete with any team in the game.  The one strength of their QB Jay Schroeder is his Passing Speed with a 69 Rating, so he's able to get it out quick to all these speedy players.  If you want a slightly more accurate QB, then back up Steve Beuerlein will increase your pass control at a 38 rating which is by no means good, just better.  The Raiders defense is lead by star safety Eddie Anderson with his 63 Max Speed, 69 Hitting Power, and 50 Interceptions.  Overall their speed on defense is fast, but they don't have any one player with a high interception rating.  Thankfully they get some coverage help from Linebackers Riki Ellison and Jerry Robinson with their 44 Interception Rating.  Where the Raiders really shine on defense in this format is on the DLine.  The Ends, Greg Townsend and Howie Long have defensive back type speed at a 56 Max Speed Rating.   With that kind of speed on the DLine and the freedom to attack an offensive play in any way possible, their value increases exponentially.  They will be terrorizing QB's and RB's all day long and can even drop back in coverage as they both have a 31 Interception Rating.

With 5 Days to go before the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship, the Green Bay Packers come in as the #5 team to be “very aware” of.   So why be so aware of the Tier 4 Green Bay Packers?  The answer is Nose Tackle Bob Nelson.  In this format anything goes and Bob Nelson is the single greatest threat as a pass rusher.  His odd ball 69 Rushing Power, which in Tecmo jargon means acceleration, gets him going faster than anyone after the snap.  Basically Nelson is the #1 guy that could take advantage the NT Dive, which is also called a lurch.  If you end up playing against the Packers and your QB isn’t at least a 25 Max Speed, I recommend putting at least 2 Shotgun passing plays in your playbook.  If you don’t, then Bob Nelson could potentially dive in and sack your quarterback before you even have a chance to throw a pass.  The only other defensive player worth noting is Linebacker Tim Harris since he is the fastest player on the D with 56 Max Speed.  On offense the Packers get a boost in this format.  The QB, Don Majkowski is one of those 25 Max Speed scramblers, so he doesn’t have to worry about opposing Nose Tackles diving in at him.  This opens up the playbook for the Packers.   Star Wide Receiver Sterling Sharpe with his 50 Max Speed gives the player an option of having a faster Running Back.  It might not be worth it though as Sharpe has a 75 Reception Rating tied for 2nd best in the game.  Also, their starting Running Back, Keith Woodside is a 44 Max Speed already.  So Sharpe is only 1 notch higher than Woodside in the speed department.   Full Back, Michael Haddix is great on kick returns and in short yardage situations as his 94 Hit Power Rating allows him to “popcorn” defenders without even getting a chance to take him down.  The Packers are now a force in Tier 4 and a sneaky good team overall in this format, especially if your opponent’s playbook is not ready for the wrath of Bob Nelson.

There are 4 Days remaining until the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship and the #4 team to look out for is the Philadelphia Eagles.  It’s no secret the Eagles have the Ultimate Weapon on offense with their Quarterback, Randall Cunningham / QB Eagles.   His 56 Max Speed is by far the fastest of any QB making him just as fast as some speedy running backs.  As a passer, he is one of the best with a unique combination of 69 Pass Control and 63 Passing Speed.  This makes him a dual threat and the most difficult player to defend in the game.  In the Hardcore Format, the Eagles have the option to put star tight end, Keith Jackson at running back with his 50 Max Speed, 63 Hitting Power, and 63 Receptions.  Thankfully, running back Keith Byars can fill in the hole in the passing game with his 69 Receptions in the Wide Receiver slot.  Byars’ 31 Max Speed isn’t as big of an issue here since QB Eagles can buy a ton of extra time with his scrambling ability.  With Jackson at running back, the Eagles have to be respected when running the ball, which makes them virtually impossible to stop on offense if controlled by a disciplined player.   Defensively the Eagles talent comes from their front 7.  Reggie White is their best overall defender with a 56 Max Speed, 69 Hitting Power, and can even help in coverage with his 31 Interceptions.  White can bring the heat all over the field and is probably the best guy to man on defense.  Often times if Reggie White is not the defensive player of choice, linebackers Jerome Brown and Seth Joyner can be manned as well.  Jerome Brown has identical Max Speed and Hitting Power Ratings to White and Seth Joyner has a 50 Max Speed and 31 Interceptions and is another good option on the bottom side of the defense.  Eric Allen is the one decent corner for the Eagles with 44 Max Speed and 50 interceptions, but overall their secondary is awfully slow.  The Eagles face the tough task of being a Tier 1 team.  Overall they will have the best playbook flexibility and the player that chooses the Eagles will have to play highly disciplined Tecmo.   Sometimes the best defense is keeping the ball away from the opposing offense and that’s what will have to be done with the potential opponents of 49ers, Oilers, Giants, and Bills.  The goal when using the Eagles is to score every possession on offense and force one big turnover to change the fortune of the game.

I subscribe to the the Son Goku mentality of no cheap victories.  So I'm going to toss out you guys a proverbial sensu bean and give some observations I've made in my hardcore prep.

1. Certain plays are highly susceptible to the nose dive bomb.  Pro-form and I form up the middle plays.

2. A 6 ms qb is a dead duck.  A 13 ms qb is 50/50 on escaping a lurch.  25 ms and above should be close to unlurchable.

3.  The best DL for lurching are GB, Pitt, TB. The worst two are KC and chi.

4. Lurching take a bit of skill.  It's not automatic.  My best advice is to tap b right at the snap if you have a top level NT.

5.  The run and shoot runs really help to offset the lurch game.  To be honest there are few lurches in most of our practice.  It just leaves you too wide open.  Plus it's better saved as a surprise to lurch.

6.  Field position and defense will mean more.  Starting a drive on the 5 yard line in has a much higher chance of a safety.

7.  Wr at RB will be big in this format.  Jerry Rice, Rison and Hill can salt away wins in the 4th quarter as RB.  Also I'm pretty sure there are unlimited subs.  So that means if your in the red zone you might rotate a Jerry Rice to RB.

8.  The best games are going to be in tier 2 and tier 3.  I think tier 2 offers the most even matchups.  Avoid tier 5.  Everyone should play at least one tier one hou vs sf for the fun it offers.

9. The food at dmen tap is amazing.  Phil runs a great food truck and has an exciting menu.  The wings are amazing with a unique hot sauce.  I also highly recommend the cheese curds and the donner bowl.

10.  For those who don't get the DBZ reference some find me the clip of Goku giving Cell a sensu bean before fighting his son in a death match.

Now 3 Days to go before the Tecmo Super Bowl Hardcore Championship and the #3 team to look out for is the Detroit Lions. What can I say? The Lions are built for this format. They have the 2nd Fastest Running Back in Barry Sanders with his 69 Max Speed, the 2nd fastest Quarterback Rodney Peete with his 31 Max Speed and 2nd best overall Nose Tackle Jerry Ball with his 44 Rushing Power, 44 Max Speed, and 69 Hitting Power. Offensively the Lions are able to completely open the playbook with Rodney Peete’s speed and the option of back up QB Andre Ware and his 25 Max Speed. They aren’t the most accurate QB’s but they can scramble all over the place with a good array of receivers to throw to. Utility Player Mel Gray has a 56 Max Speed and 50 Reception Rating, so he can be used as a wide receiver or running back. WR’s Robert Clark and Richard Johnson both have good hands for catching the ball. Clark at a 69 Receptions Rating and Johnson at a 75 Reception Rating. Just beware that Johnson is slow as molasses. Barry Sanders can break a big run at any time, so the attention will be on him by opposing defenses. This will allow you to have a balanced offensive attack. Defensively the Lions have great options on every level of the D. Jerry Ball at Nose Tackle is an excellent option to surprise your opponent with a lurch. At the second level, Chris Spielman gives the D help in the run game with his 50 Max Speed and 56 Hitting Power and Michael Cofer is a superb coverage linebacker with 56 Max Speed and 31 Interceptions. At Safety William White is your #1 star defender with 56 Max Speed / 56 Interceptions / 56 Hitting Power and he should be manned often. Overall the Lions have tremendous balance on both sides of the ball. In Tier 3 they are definitely a top option. Also, they are a good fall back team against Tier 2 teams if you aren’t comfortable with all the slower QB options in that tier.

Only 2 days away now from the Chicago Tecmo Championship Explosion!  The #2 team to look out for?  The San Francisco 49ers!  The 49ers are arguably the best team in the game led by their two stud offensive talents, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice.  Joe Montana is tied for the best accuracy in the game with an 81 Pass Control Rating.  To top that off he has an incredible 75 Avoid Pass Block Rating and a 19 Max Speed to make him a mobile QB.  Jerry Rice is simply the most talented offensive position player in the game.  He has a phenomenal 81 Reception Rating, a blazing 69 Max Speed and 81 Ball Control, which means he will fumble less than other players.  At receiver no one is better than Rice.  Combo his 81 Receptions with Montana’s 81 Pass Control and you will be catching almost everything including passes in double coverage.  In this format, Jerry Rice is a great option at Running Back, as he would be the 2nd fastest player in that position in the entire game.  If you do choose to put Rice at running back the other position players on the 49ers have the hands to fill in for Rice.  John Taylor has a 63 Reception Rating, Brent Jones a 69 Reception Rating, and Tom Rathman has a 56 Reception Rating.  The only drawback in this scenario is that you will lose some speed at wide out as your fastest options would be John Taylor and Roger Craig at 50 Max Speed.  Coming into the tournament, you definitely want to have a game plan on how you want to configure their offense as they will be used often in Tier 1.  Also, don’t forget back up QB Steve Young has a 25 Max Speed, which allows him to escape nose tackle dives if you want to open up your playbook options more.   On defense the 49ers are stacked at every level.  Michael Carter and Pierce Holt both have a 69 Hitting Power on the D-Line, Holt also having some wheels at 50 Max Speed.  Linebackers Bill Romanowski, Matt Millen, and Charles Haley patrol the middle of the field.  Haley is the most talented of the bunch there with a 56 Max Speed and 63 Hitting Power.  Millen can also help in coverage with his 31 Interception Rating.  The backfield is defended by blazing fast Safeties Ronnie Lott at 69 Max Speed and Dave Waymer at 63 Max Speed.  Lott is the enforcer with a 69 Hitting Power and Waymer is the #1 ball hawk with a 69 Interception Rating.  The 49ers don’t really have a weakness on defense.  The only thing you can really say about their D is that the Interception Rating overall isn’t as high as you would like it to be to combat some of these other Tier 1 passing attacks.

Talking to some of the players that have registered, we most likely will not have 12 players for the Friday Satellite Tournament.  If this is the case, we will reschedule it on a Saturday in August for the registered players of this tournament.  Mort, DMen Tap owner Phil, my brother, and I will still be there Friday setting up, playing, and streaming some Tecmo action.  So come join us anytime after 6pm for some games.

As far as getting to and parking at the event, make sure you are coming down Belmont Ave. heading west.  There is construction blocking cars that are going east down Belmont.  There is a lot of free street parking in front of DMen Tap all the way down to the Burger King on the same side of the street as the bar.   If that does get taken up, then head west down Belmont and park on the street after the construction.  DON'T park on the North side of Belmont opposite of the bar as that is currently a tow zone.  You will see the signs, just wanted to give you guys a heads up.
