MVP / ROY Watch

With just 7 days to go in the season, here are the front runners for the end of season hardware.


Offensive MVP


QB Jim Fassel (BAL) - Leads the league in rating (145.7) with what appears to be conservative game managing (1697yds, 17td 1int)

QB Archie Manning (DAL) - 2nd in rating (133.8, 24td, 3int) and led jesus to the NFC East crown. That last fact might be the key (ahhhhhhhhh).

RB Marv Hubbard (SF) - Has the inside track to lead the league in rushing (5 games to go).  Missing the playoffs could hurt his chances.

RB John Riggins (MIA) - Leads the league in rushing yards and rushing TDs as a B back.


No WRs or TEs really have the numbers to compete for MVP I'd say.


Defensive MVP


DL - Joe Greene (MIA) - will get a mention but doesn't have the huge numbers (10 sacks) to warrant a win.

LB - Jack Lambert (OAK) - with six sacks, three picks, and four games still to play, he could win ROY and MVP.

DB - Pat Fischer (DET) - will have a strong case for his second defensive MVP with 15int (next highest INT total is 11). 


Offensive ROY


No rookie QBs are having strong seasons. 

RB - Mark van Eeghen (DET) and Delvin Williams (DAL) have similar numbers (~980yds), but Williams has one game left to play. 

WR - Lynn Swann (SD, 955yds) and John Stallworth (RAMS, 834yds) both have three games remaining and could contend for the award.

TE - Dave Casper (HOU, 1135yds) is the current favorite and has two games left to add to his total.


Defensive MVP


DL - Ed "Too Tall" Jones (CLE) has five sacks.

LB - The award should go to Lambert (OAK).  He's dominating. 

DB - "C" back Eddie Brown (MIN) had a nice season with 5 picks and a sack.
