Thunderdome VIII: Brackets RELEASED!

Recommended Posts

The time has come!  Brackets are signed, sealed and now delivered to my fellow Tecmo brothers!  I gotta say, putting this bracket together was TOUGH.  I know I probably shafted some of you but there is so much talent in this tournament that somebody has to get the short end of the stick. Please dont take this personally.  This is supposed to be fun! So with that being said, I'll shut up now and let you guys go at it!  Here is what is available to you for viewing:

  • Of course I have to make a video right? ¬†This¬†is nothing fancy or creative and not my finest work, but a simple OG kickoff to the greatest online Tecmo tournament in the world! ¬†Scroll down for the embedded video.
  • Here is the link to the Challonge.com site that will be tracking results of the tournament.¬†http://challonge.com/thunderdomeVIII
  • Here is a¬†pdf of the brackets¬†for easy viewing (you may need to zoom in acrobat reader though). ¬†Thunderdome VII Brackets.pdf
  • Posts 2, 3, and 4 contain¬†snapshots and a preview of each of the region brackets.

Lets hear your opinions about the regions and how awful I did here in this thread or over on discord.  GOOD LUCK and let the games begin!

Midwest Bracket

5691ee369b257_MidwestBracket.png.0d7f5bd

Midwest Bracket Preview:

The #1 overall seed Regulator looks to capture another tournament title to add to his impressive resume.  He enters as the favorite but faces some stiff competition in the Midwest.  This bracket is filled with experienced live tourney players as the midwest is a hotbed for live action.  Ol' Dirty Tecmo, Toolie, and Vikingmoe round out an impressive top 4 and would be favorites in many tournaments out there.  If you think the top 4 is impressive the remainder of the bracket is littered with talented players that could easily make deep runs.  Hoffnasty, Jesus, adversity are all solid players that can win some games against the best.  We shall see if the King can be toppled.

Seeding Conundrum:

VikingMoe as a 4 seed was something I didnt feel great about.  The current HSTL champion is such a great player as proven by his Madison performance last year.  He feels like a 2-3 seed to me but ultimately it came down to he and toolie for the spot but gave the slightest edge to toolie with an impressive resume in the online world.  Diaz, Toolie, and moe were all so close and this took some advice from alot of other folks out there.  Many differing opinions but nothing but respect for these guys.

Upset Alert!

Maybe its my rustiness in OG ROM but I played Rockman in tpc and man that dude is solid!  As much as I would love to blame it on rust, I got my ass kicked a few times so I have to chalk it up to the mans skill.  As an 11 seed he will be a tough matchup for Nos and this matchup should be on upset alert.

Darkhorse

It's tough to pick someone on Regulator's side of the bracket and Ryan11 would be a good choice but he faces some stiff competition in Moe and Regulator on that side.  So I will go with Neerrm since he has been playing well and brings an A plus tapping game to the table.  If he can get by Adversity, Diaz looms in round 2 but with a tapping edge anything can happen!

West Bracket

West.png.09759f589f460a33901c2b4fee6fd53

West Preview:

The reigning world Champion Tecmo Psycho heads West as he looks to keep his 2015 momentum going into 2016.  If he makes it out of this region, it would be impressive as the West features many of the PNW crew which should make for some interesting rivalry games.  And oh yeah, this region has Coconuts as the #2 seed which is like having two #1 seeds in the same bracket.  GoNick as a 3 seed could pose a threat on Psycho's side of the bracket as he is as tough as an out there is.   Top to bottom, this may be the deepest region when you have GoNick, kamp, manyo, gipsmoke, ziur, and jfag all in the top 8.  There's alot of online hardware and successes in this group which should make this a fun a region.

Seeding Conundrum:

Grip, Ziur, Kamp and Manyo was a tough decision for me.  In the conversations I had with other people, this group seemed to have the most common response: "Man this is tough, theyre all so close".  Ultimately, I went with online success and had to roll with that.

Upset Alert!

With some solid players in this region seeded fairly low, there are many candidates in this one.  Gamehigh is a staple in HSTL and has shown he can compete well.  Manyo will have his hands full for sure.  BigHock has always seemed on the brink of playoff berths but seems to fall short.  He has done well with elite QB's so the tier 1 matchup may be tough for Gripsmoke if Hock can get his hands on QB Bills.  Player121xk can also win a big game as he always plays tough on OG ROM in our TTL battles.

Darkhorse

Ziur is always a guy I seem to struggle with.   It's sometimes easy to blame the lag on the losses, but the skill is there and hes a very good player that can beat anyone when he's on his A game.  He's in coconuts side of the bracket which will be an interesting matchup in round 2 if they can get there.

East Bracket

East.thumb.png.74a8e83e5df1b72bc05ac494e

East Preview:

The East has a great mix of talent from the online and live world.  You have top seed Daboy who is among online's best, you have Carnage who is one of the great live players, and of course you have GOD!  Those 3 could win this tournament and nobody would blink an eye.  Arncoem and DT are also great live players with arncoem also doing well in online play as well.  Clarkhamilton may be polarizing but the dude can play and OG ROM is his specialty.   You have someone like Oklahoma who has won online titles and Bradbears who has made some deep playoff runs which shows how tough this region will be.

Seeding Conundrum:

I really wanted Carnage to be a 2 seed because the man is talented and may not get his due among the masses.  After TSBGOD dismantled me in HSRL Super Bowl and his recent rejuvenation with success, I had to give the nod to him.  These two are on a collision course in round 3 which will decide whether I made the right call.  That would be quite the game!

Upset Alert!

Purplehaze is a solid player and I am locked in against him.  When I started playing online last year, he was one I played alot as I was coming up.  All of our games were always close battles with us splitting alot of games and series.  We havent played in a while and this one should be close, so this game can easily go either way.

Darkhorse:

Clark is someone who could make some noise in this tournament.  He runs the Tournament training League (TTL) and has won it a few times so this is right up his wheelhouse.  A matchup with TSBGOD in round 2 could be in play and man would that be a fun clash of personalities!

Other than confusing TSBgod for the #2 seed instead of #15 seed, it looks pretty close

Haha..... Wow he showed up for a post....I have to give him credit :) I bring the best out of people.

Overall pretty good seeding, a few misses, but it is impossible to get everyone right. Great job.

9 out of 24 games in almost 3 days with some good activity on discord.  I am pleased but hungry for more.  Just a reminder that deadline is 1/20 so still a week left but lets get some games in (myself included but its getting in tonight).  Please let me know if you are having trouble connecting with your opponent.  If I have to sim the game, it will go to the one making the effort.

Good Luck!

Here are some final thoughts as I wrap this baby up.

      The CHAMP
What more can be said of your Thunderdome VIII Champion Regulator?  After another live tournament championship, he came out of online retirement to participate and showed why he is hands down the best player right now.  He was put to the test by Coconuts and got a little lucky in the NYJ-PIT game, but the great ones always find ways to win.  He is just on another level.  Madison is on the horizon and it would be difficult to take anyone else to win.  Congratulations!  You deserved it.

      The MVP's
      1.  Coconuts:  Not many can go toe to toe with Regulator and play as well as Coco did.  He had the NYJ-PIT game won and in the bag and lost in possibly the craziest sequence of events.  It was amazing how he was able to put that kind of loss aside and beat DT twice in that same night.  His determination and ability to focus on the task at hand was phenomenal as many wouldve just crumbled in the aftermath of that crazy game.  He seems primed for another deep Madison run and maybe we can get a Thunderdome rematch with Regulator?  If it happens, the call has to be NYJ-PIT!

      2.  DT:  There was a lot of chat in the thunderdome discord chat room about the perceived underselling of DT's ability.   As the person who created the seeds, I have egg on my face for that.  Going in, everybody including myself knew he was a great player but being new to the online world, that had to play a factor.  BUT, to beat heavyweights like (3) Carnage (2) TSBGOD and (1) Daboy was an incredible performance.  No other person went through this gauntlet of great players to get to the point he did.  He just ran into a buzzsaw.  Respect to DT, that was quite the performance!

      3. Prime/Storksdaman:  The two Cinderella's spoiled many tournament dreams.  They combined to knock out a 3, 4,5, and 6 seeds throughout their deep runs.  Prime gave Coco a scare in round 3 and just ran out of time after making a comeback.  And he almost didnt join the tourney!  Storksdaman beat two live tournament veterans in VikingMoe and Ryan11 which was an impressive accomplishment.  Unfortunately, Regulator was next in line but storks put up a valiant effort in defeat.  Great job guys, you definitely opened up some eyes!

      The LVP's
      1.  The West region high seeds outside of Coconuts and Tecmo Psycho:  This region was a complete bloodbath.  (3) GoNick, (4) Kamp, and (5) Manyo all suffered first round upsets.  (6) Gripsmoke lost to (14) Prime in round 2 which really opened up the region for Coco and Psycho.

      2.  TSBGOD:  For choking!  See below

      3.  The final 3 format:  I goofed, sorry!

      Games of the Tourney
      1.  Regulator (NYJ) vs Coconuts (PIT):  The game of the tournament with two of the best players delivered in spades.  A heavyweight fight that came down to some fortunate events leading to a miraculous ending.  When i got the nsv to make the video, my jaw was on the floor with that ending.  http://tecmobowl.org/forum/topic/67676-thunderdome-viii-final-3-video-recaps-and-information/?do=findComment&comment=465876

      2.  TSBGOD (MIN) vs DT (Rams):  An entertaining game that featured two great players.  The game went deep into overtime and featured two epic choke jobs by TSBGOD! :).  DT was able to capitalize on the choke and complete his 2nd upset of the tournament.  Somewhere, Blair Walsh is smiling.  http://tecmobowl.org/forum/topic/67528-thunderdome-viii-video-recaps-round-3-det-min-rams-sd-deadline-23/?do=findComment&comment=465362

      Final Thoughts
Not going to lie, I have a big sense of relief that this tournament is over as this has been a busy month!  I know some people have praised me for running a nice tourney (thanks by the way) but honestly, its because all of you were great participants.  My #1 goal was to have no sims/forfeits and full participation and you guys delivered.  We also finished before Madison which was a long shot when I looked at the timing of each round.  But everybody played their games and met deadline well in advance.  The Thunderdome room in discord was also very active and it seemed like there was interest outside of the remaining participants.  It made my job easier and fun so THANK YOU!

I will run more tournaments this year with the next one likely in April-May timeframe. I will try to keep the formats different from each other to keep things fresh.  More to come in the coming months.

      Again, thank you!
