Magic coverage?

When the defense calls a pass play that is not the same as the offense, the game designates a certain defender to cover a WR.  Its an absolute that works based on the combo of what the defense and offense call.

On rare occasions though, the defense will get a 2nd defender that goes in coverage...which we have dubbed "Magic coverage".  Very curious what determines this?  I know that in RBI baseball a random number generator determines whether or not an error will be made on a hit ball.  I have to assume something similar occurs in Tecmo.

When you play a style with NO QB runs, or limited QB runs as we and the Canadians do, this can be a major deciding factor when Magic coverage decides to get involved a little more than usual.

Its a great wildcard at times, especially when it happens on 3rd down.

The defensive play design has randoms and jumps based upon the week that produce the various tasks like what you described.

An simplified example of IND calling Pass #1 and the defense calling Pass #2 has the defense:

RE   = ZigZag or Rush

NT   = Rush

LE   = Rush

ROLB = 12% Chance to Man to Man RB (else turn and later rush)

RILB = Rush

LILB = Rush

LOLB = 12% Chance to Man to Man TE (else turn and later rush)

RCB  = Man to Man WR1

LCB  = 12% Chance to Man to Man WR2 (else move and stop)

Interesting!   Pass 1 features Dickerson coming out of the backfield, and 4 targets in total.

Most typically "it appears" that when Magic coverage strikes, its just one extra defender.  In the heat of the battle we've encountered situations where for a moment we thought it was a playpick by the defense, because it looked like there was a lot more coverage going on than just the extra defender.  That confused us a little, as we never knew you could feasibly have 3 guys covered...I assume that's right, or by chance you could even have all 4 covered?

Do the percentages stay the same when the offense calls a pass play with only 3 targets?

That really puts things into perspective.  We've had nights where magic coverage was off the charts and wreaking havoc, and also had nights where it occurred maybe once in 6-7 games.

The percentages can be changed with each player on defense but overall 12% seems to be the normal amount set.

If IND calls Pass #2 and the defense calls Pass #1:

ROLB = 12% Man WR1

RILB = Rush

LILB = Rush

LOLB = 12% MAN WR2

RCB = Move Turn

LCB = MAN TE

However if the defense calls Run #2 (nobody gets man to man):

ROLB = Turn Rush (if COA/COM and week 5 or more then 12% rush else vertical mirror ballcarrier)

RILB = Rush

LILB = Rush

LOLB = Turn Rush

RCB = Move Turn

LCB = Move Turn

Yeah, Run calls only create pass coverage when the combination of calls is diagonal....defense calls run 1, and offense calls pass 2 will create coverage.

oddities of coverages...

-Calling SF's/MIA's run play gives you NO coverage on any pass.

-Calling Pass 1 and being the top MLB allows you to go unblocked against only MIA's run play(Not SF).

Always surprised that calling run there never gave you any help against the pass happy teams, but you could do some decent game-planning against MIA run game, unlike SF.
