CoachK - The official project thread

Recommended Posts

Since I've gotten a lot of steam on this project lately, I've decided to make an official thread. In the past, we communicated via email, PM, and forum posts, and a bunch of information between hurricane and myself either got lost, or never discussed.

The MT boys are busy with their TSB3 ROM, so rather than risk losing it again, I broke down the talking point. Here they are:

Things the editor can do
Team info (city, arena, mascot, ranking team attributes)
Player info
Import player data from CSV
Home/Away uniforms (web-based)
Court colors (web-based)

Editor to-do list
Note which palettes the historic teams share
Ability to swap palettes (for moving teams around)
Ability to copy/move team

Need discussion
These are things I haven't touched because I don't understand the notes hurricane gave me
playbooks
Tournament setup (does this mean setting up the seeding?)
Starting lineup pointers (along with just needing some discussion on how they work, hurricane also noted there was a bug that needed fixing. See note in bugs section below).

Things not known, but would be nice
Setting the schedule for playing a season
Finding Sim Values
Finding Palette Pointers For all team colors (no more Sharing)
Check if there are built in playstyles
Work on updating uniform styles (sprite artwork)
Fan palettes? My notes have a hex location of EAC5E...are these mapped out?

Bugs
The starters will be the first 5 players on the rosters.....Guard,Guard,Forward,Forward,Center. On the pointers in the team info this is reversed because the names scroll top to bottom (Center,F,F,G,G) Does that make sense. The next 7 players are the bench players, i think in order of 6th man thru the 12th Dud biggrin.png. Pallettes are correct, I might see what all the bytes do between palettes to see what effects it has on game. Will give you feed back on that. The new sheet i sent also has my logo finds so far I'll break down the bytes for that this week. I am still trying to figure it out myself. For future info, we might want to add a default playbook. That i should have tomorrow night...just putting the pointers together now. Also maybe play styles for each team as well, again just some slider stuff maybe, will let you know what i find on team AI....i think there is something in those 12 unknown bytes on team AI i haven't found. Took a break to watch NC game.

Editor Notes
I suck at anything dealing with UI on a windows app. I'm debating on porting the whole editor to be a web-based thing. If enough people eventually care about that, I'll upload it somewhere and make it so people can edit their ROMs as desired. For this first one though, I won't have time to do that, so it'll have to just be a community project.

P.S. as far as the ROM goes, I know we're going to need some help with editing because I'm not going to be able to rate all 480 players. In fact, my hope is that a few volunteers step up and do the ratings so I don't have to do any, as some people have expressed interest in that.

We should have a discussion on the teams included. 32 regular teams, and then 8 teams that were historic teams that share palettes with teams from the 32 main ones (unless MT can fix that).

If we don't get enough help, we might just create some team profiles and apply ratings to teams based on a profile so we don't individually rate each player.

We've got time.

I posted the file I have in the top post. Like I said, I can't remember if this is the latest or second latest, but one hur will be able to tell and fix it as I think the last change was a minor one.

I'm very excited to get this project a-rolling.

I think the very last and lowest priority thing is to get logos done. We can always blank them out or make them generic...it's more important to me that we get all the data sorted out. Hell, i can draw logos too. I have fun with that...

I have a version of the 2010 rom that has almost all of the logos Canes worked on. There are maybe a handful that need adjusting but it's really close. Some great work put into it. Can we use them from the rom or do we need the art from Canes?

Most of the big teams left out of the original game (Georgetown, North Carolina, Marquette, Texas, Baylor, etc) are done here.

Here's the list from the rom (by rank)

* = new team to game

Kansas -

Kentucky -

Duke - new logo

Syracuse -

Kansas St - new logo*

Villanova -

W. Virginia - new logo*

Ohio St - new logo*

Georgetown - new logo*

New Mexico - new logo*

Baylor - new logo*

Pittsburgh - new logo*

Vandy - new logo*

Purdue - new logo

Wisconsin

Maryland

Michigan St

Temple - new logo

Texas A&M - new logo*

Butler - new logo*

Xavier - new logo*

Marquette - new logo*

Tennesse - new logo*

Richmond - incomplete (shows st. mary logo)*

BYU - incomplete (shows gonzaga)*

California - incomplete (shows WV logo)

Gonzaga - new logo*

Texas - new logo*

Northern Iowa - new logo*

Wake Forest - incomplete (shows vandy)

Louisville - incomplete (shows NM)

Florida -

St. Mary - new logo*

Georgia Tech - incomplete (shows vandy)

Washington - new logo*

Cornell - new logo*

North Carolina - new logo*

Miami - new logo*

UConn

Nebraska - incomplete (shows cornell)*

So that's the 40 teams, not sure how the extra teams (32-40 here, looks like some previous teams were shuffled to these spots?) can be incorporated into the tournament, etc.

At least a discussion point for which teams to keep and get rid of.

I wonder if we can save these logos off for reuse later...I think so, because I believe all the logo palettes share the same thing, so we'd just need to export to bitmap and then reimport later if we needed to...

Probably just a thread or two...in fact, everything can be contained in this thread...I see two threads:

1.) Project thread (hacking/editing, etc)

2.) The actual ROM thread where people can comment on teams, download it, etc.

I mainly needed a centralized location for storing everything we know about the game and what's left to do on it before it becomes something we can put out as a release every year.

The teams that share logos are still an issue on the front end menus. The in game is correct though. And they are different layouts right now. I might be able to move to a universal one. My 600thwork post:)

I'm mostly interested in these, as I see them as big deal for editing the ROM.

The logo sharing are the greats. In main menus they use the normal teams logo, but in game it is a logo with the year. With some some research, i think i can find why it loads a different one for each. That will also be where it is loading pallete info as well. Only the 32in normal teams can be in the tourney. Greats are exhibition only. Later.

For the tournament setup, it was the same default (depending on # of teams) but the player could customize. I'm guessing there's some built-in logic in the rom that we need to sift through?

For the season schedules, if possible, I would leave the logic as-is. It was pretty random IIRC.

Re: the 32 - this makes sense for tournament (and season) eligibility. Maybe in future versions we make all-time college teams (or just select years) with these slots?

This is good info. All stuff I wasnt sure of and didn't have the time or experience to know for sure. He has some locations noted, but if the schedule was already random, then we probably can leave that one alone. The tourney setup...if that can be customized that's good. It would be nice as a user to be able to set it thoug in case the teams move around.

Only thing we would need to find is for the CPU teams when they get simmed in tournament. There is some value i haven't located that controls teams probability. It does not use the actual player ratings. IE, i can change Kentucky from that year to all 30 rated players, but they will still win most of their tourney games. So there is some sim value somewhere that controls this. Would be nice to find if we cant fill all 32 slots for the boards tourney and need CPU teams to finish it. And i may have accidently broken the season mode, so somoeone needs to check, as i lost my rom file with my old pc.

Very new to this, but have been enjoying the TSB updates for the past few years and was curious if anyone had created an update to my favorite sports game ever - Coach K Basketball.

We still play it  2 on 2 on the Wii, and we were planning to play it tomorrow during the Final Four. So these threads hinting at an updated version got my hopes up, but I can't find the rom anywhere - can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Big Fan

That update has bugs. Editor is 90% finished, but I need drunken and hurricane to get me the remaining info. I gave up.

Too bad. A yearly coach k tourney would be awesome.

I think cane55 lost the info when his cpu died. Too bad. I agree a yearly update would rock.

      Requirements:
A PC with .NET Framework 3.5 or greater
** YOU MUST USE THE VERSION OF THE ROM THAT HURRICANE55 POSTED. THIS IS THE ONLY ROM THE EDITOR CAN READ **
Alright, the first edition of the editor is here. It's not a 1.0 release because there are a few things it doesn't do. My goal for this initial release was to create the architecture for it, and learn some WPF. After a few weeks of doing just that, here is the result...currently, it does the following:
Allows editing of Team Information (Name, Mascot, Conference, Arena, Indicator Color, Rank, Wins, Losses, Scoring rank, Rebounding rank, Ball Control rank, Defense Rank rank, and Home/Away uniforms.
      Things left to do:
Add a "create base ROM" feature that basically spits out a new ROM as is so you dn't need to go hunting around for the hurricane55 version everytime you want to edit
Give proper acknoledgement to Hurricane and the NHL94 guys...
      Playbooks
Player Information (abilities, heads, numbers, etc)
      Edit court/fans/stand colors
Ability to edit the "previous year" e.g., 09-10 (I don't know where this exists yet)
      Edit offense/defensive playbooks
The color chooser doesn't remember your color which is lame. I used an open source library for that...I plan to look at the code and add that functionality if I can.
Edit remaining text throughout the game
      Clean up the UI
I did a lot of testing, so this should be functioning properly, but I'd backup your ROM just in case. Please report all bugs to me. Remember, this is an early release and will go through more changes as coding continues. From the "left to do" list, I plan on hitting up player attributes, playbooks, and court colors next.
I'm going to take a few days off and rest my weary head...probably fire some questions off to Hur to get prepared for when I do come back to this...

This is a 80% beta. I have just started ot figure out the logos, so they are not complete. The rosters are reorganzed, but not ACCURATE...I used the orignials, just tried to match up to this years teams(ie Kansas uses Arkansas, Nebraska is a mix of backups from arkansas and virginia). Uniforms are not 100%. Got the team colors, but not the style down. Again this is just a beta to see if it gets enough hits. Plus me, Drunken_honkey, and TecmoTurd really wanted to do this. Tecmo Turd is using this beta as a base for an editing tool. He just got my info yesterday, but he says it is coming along. I started on this about 2 weeks ago, and have really made progress, by next year will be able to efit everything in game, including graphics! Hopefully i get the hack done on the graphics, so i can turn that info over as well for someone to create an editor for as well. So enjoy the MAdness!!!!!!
      notes 4-3-10
Just found an issue with Texas, let me know if you find any, i changed alot of pointers, so it is going to be buggy....i did some byte checking, and forgot to change a few back. Pointers are right, jsut some player AI and Team AI stuff. I wll go through it one team at a time next week. Sorry, again any Ai problems let me know ASAP.
Had to chagne the ROM file, corrected issues with the Team AI.

Changed out Beta 3 today---4-6-10...fixed some shading issues on courts.

      4-10-10
Done With Logos......Deleted old Beta....Thsiversion is playable
Let me know of any bugs and i will address ASAP.
      Left For future Version.
Thanking NHL94.com EA gurus for documents that led to hack.
Thank TecmoTurd and DrunkenHonkey for their creative support.
      Finding Sim Values
Finding Palette Pointers For all team colors(No more Sharing)
Find Pointers For Logos For All Teams(Hopefully to help create a logo editor)
      Updating Rosters
Check if there are built in playstyles
Work on updating uniform styles(Sprite artwork)
      4-14-10 Update
      Updating Coach K notes
This in progress now. Pictured Below.
Tecmo, I'll get you the pointers, i evened it out so each team has the same space, each line has the same space. I will PM Tecmo
