TSB NFL 2011-2012 Buck Rewhawl HIGHSPEED

edited rosters/ratings

updated 11-12 pro bowl rosters

slightly lowered COM JUICE (slightly decreasing overall game difficulty)

updated COM team defensive ultra logic (overall, run d, pass d)

updated sim values for teams and players

modified sim stat ranges (you will now see Brees and Brady throwing for 5500 yards, most of the top RBs rush for around 1500-1700 yds, and top WR get 80 grabs and 1500-1700 yards)

updated some graphics (Tebow intro screen and some of the season league leaders screens)

extra ROM available (NOp2, inside Zip archive) *lacking* the COM v MAN hack - for those with emulators that cannot configure Player 2 controller

Buck, I love your ROMS! This version doesn't seem to play as fast as your 2010 version of HIGHSPEED. Did you tone it down a bit? Maybe I'm just so used to your 2010 version that plays real fast.

Just some notes:

I love how Chad Henne has a Pass Control of 6.

Reggie Bush is #22 not #25.

Clyde Gates #10 WR should be in there instead of Charles Clay or Marlon Moore. And Gates should be returning kickoffs and Bess returning punts. This doesn't really matter to be honest, It might not even be worth changing. it's just like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. 0-3 Dolphins

Some Panthers notes...

FB Rashawn Jackson and FB Tony Fiammeta didn't make the final cuts. Yo should include RB Mike Goodson and FB Jerome Felton instead

DT Corvey Irvin (#93) didn't make the final cuts neither. Rookie Terrell McClain is playing the other DT spot

-Nice job Buck/Rewhawl !

The game speed has an excellent pace, not a glorified space-invaders football.

Like the graphics as well although I thought the Pats alt. tops are a little 'pink'.

Sad to see that you didn't have the chance to implement pre-set defenses, I'm sure it was more work to make it play right.

Playing as the Pats I feel somewhat at a unfair advantage with all the weapons at my disposal. (not complaining)

My only gripes:

Can we add just a notch more MS speed to Edelman. I mean, 13? I'm not asking for a 44MS but a 25MS would be ok.

And if you are going to post an update i suggest you imput WR 18 Matthew Slater to replace the unnamed PATRIOTS guy.

He's the current KR specialist:

With that said, I'm glad you've put your heart out to this, the effort is appreciated!

No need to dish out a 60Burger for Crap Madden now!

PEACE

All this years roms have been fantastic. No disrespect at all to any of the other roms out there. But, this one honestly feels like the best description of today's NFL. The original Tecmo Super Bowl plays like football in 1991. (one reason why I love it so much) This is the best version of today's football. Week 1 I lost to the PATS, (BRADY is amazing, but he's amazing in real life.) Week two, I beat Houston in Overtime 41-35. Those two games were the most exciting games I have played in a long time. week three, Buffalo beats new england by a TD. (dunno why I'm referencing NE so much)

It's the last to be released and you can tell, becuase many of the ROMs out there now play like the 2010 season. This one because it was released last i think plays more current than any other ROM. I can't believe how low the ratings are on some players and they still mirror how they play in real life.

Any chance you can get the refs to hold the first down markers like in the "Official" ROM? That would look more official.

I know that this game is "higher" speed than the others, but I'm not sure "highspeed" is the right name for this version....but I can't really think of another one.

The playbooks and new plays are BRILLIANT. I mean BRILLIANT. New Englad plays like new England. Today's pass happy league with bubble screens and misdirection play action at the line of scrimmage and running out of the shotgun formation are all included.

I love how the players jump instead of dive. This change also makes it feel more like a 2011 version than a 1991 version updated. I also like it because you get more cut scenes of the defender and WR going up in the air after each other and you don't find out who makes the catch until he comes down with it and it says his name. That's my favorite cut screen of all time. I played 28 season in a row over the last year and a half and didn't get that cut scene once. My first game, I got one already.

Also, talking about NE, it might be a good idea to try and incorporate their TEs more in their offense.

Offensive lines should be able to block a little bit better, or at least the dolphins o-line. I'm always running for my life.

And Anthony Fasano dropped every pass that was thrown to him. but he does actually has some good hands.

He did this week 1 monday night:

here's how the teams were rated. this is a technique developed by me (last spring) and rewhawl helped me refine it for the last several months. [this team rating technique was used in the making of our (as of yet, unreleased) Tecmo Minor League ROM.]

this first screenshot shows the "shelves" of teams. the teams on the top are "top shelf" teams and have $1350 to work with (more on this later). the teams in the middle (the majority) have $1000 to work with. and the bottom shelf teams have $650. (some of the player descriptions to the right are out of date...and this portion is an evolving work in progress - as the season carries on)

post-3789-13413730186727_thumb.png

once we decided on what team gets what "shelf" ranking, we go into the team-specific spreadsheet where the overall team is built - and then - every player is rated with an allotted number of "notches". (only cells in green are to be entered. the calculations, error checks, and such are automatic!)

note that a X (or gold) player costs $200, a S (silver) player costs $125, and a Bronze player costs $50...a "bum" costs $0. a gold gets a shitload of notches to distribute to his ratings, and the number of notches descends from there, with a "bum" getting totally shafted.

post-3789-13413730189752_thumb.png

finally, this last screenshot shows an example of how we build a player (RBs here) and the RB backups. the spreadsheet automatically pulls values from tables and only the cells in green need to be fooled with (RS,RP,MS,HP,REC) - the calculations and error checking are automatic. BC is based on player value.

for the backups, a pool of notches are available to distribute between the RB3 and RB4.

post-3789-13413730191277_thumb.png

finally, after a team is built (goes pretty quickly actually), the roster is ready in TOOL format to copy/paste into TOOL.

I just played my first game (preseason) using this ROM without having previously played any versions of it (I did briefly read the 2010 version thread in anticipation for this one), and I did okay, considering I had no idea how the playbooks ran + the general adjustment into some wildly different player stats. Played 6 min. qtrs., as the Broncos vs. the Raiders, and won 58-35.

That said, the way that the ratings get distributed is illuminating.

Some specific team notes on the Broncos:

- WR Eric Decker is #87

- TE Daniel Fells is #86

- LE Robert Ayers is #91

Specific gameplay notes (Granted, it's only one game, but...these are just suggestions. Feel free to consider/disregard the following):

Offense:

- Feels very good, actually, despite the stats. Tebow has the ability to scramble for first downs, and that bubble screen to Lloyd is money if the Teebs doesn't wildly throw it.

- Orton has a generous 13 Max Speed. It should be a 1, but since that's most likely not possible in TSB terms, it should be a generous 6. Same with his Acceleration. And, his Avoid Pass Block rating is also too high; he loves to get his balls batted at the LOS. It should be a 6 also.

- I personally see Moreno's REC to be around 31 or so, and McGahee's around 19.

- Royal could use a boost in Max Speed, to 19 or 25; Acceleration should be around 19.

- Decker's Acceleration should be around 13; Toughness should be around 19.

- Clady could use a bit of a boost -- 19 Speed and 63 Toughness, minimum. I don't know how RT rookie Franklin has better stats than he does, especially this early in his inaugural season.

- I'd up Kuper's Toughness one notch higher, to 56.

- I personally think Walton, Beadles, and Franklin got some generous Toughness ratings, but it's fine gameplay-wise, as is  . Perhaps downgrade them to 44/44/38, respectively, if you so wish.

Defense:

- Downgrade Vickerson's Toughness to 31.

- Dumervil's Max Speed sounds right around 13, if not higher.

- Mays has too high INT. 13 sounds sufficient.

- In no way should A. Goodman have 44 INT. 25/31 is more like it. And his Toughness should be a generous 6, instead of 31.

- I think Champ's speed is a bit too low, but I can understand keeping it as is. His INT is too low as well. Rahim Moore, a rookie, has a higher INT rating than he does. Around 56, if not higher, seems fair for Champ.

It's obvious that there's going to be some sort of adjustment period for me to get used to this ROM, but it plays great, so far. I'm gonna have to spend some time getting to know the formations and the playbooks.

Off one game -- nice job.

my post right above yours explains how the players/teams are rated. If I give a notch of MS - a notch has to be removed from another category. I can't just go and add notches.

but I will see if I can tweak the players in a direction you suggest. actually, I just did this within the spreadsheet, not breaking any rules - check this:

Ok. A new level and yet another first for a play design...coming right up.

WR that drag across the field according to the position of the QB. Or as that jackass ron jawarski would say, extending the play. Will post New rom

tonight.

As expected, I'm loving the rom.

A few questions. Did you change the way HP works? Seems like grappling has become much less predictable. Did you tweak defensive speed? Doesn't seem like the +100 Max Speed for defenders is in place.

if anything, the rating system is different so HP is all over the map and probably pretty low in general for offense. I have noticed this, too - while playing as a CB, a WR will throw me sometimes... but no, I did not tweak the way HP works. I will look into making it more predictable. next update.

regarding defensive speed, again - in general, player ratings are lower so it plays a bit slower. (for example, in the 2010 rom, every defender had at least 31 RS and 31 RP)

I have been working on a speed up version and been play testing it the last couple days - it's almost ready and is working good.

Today, I made a new pass play and modified a couple others in order to implement a brand new thing - TEs and WR that "roll" with the QB! my next post will describe it better.

See first post for new rom

ok, so here's the new play and the new feature - "receiver rolling". basically for a few plays, the TE or a WR will vertically "follow" the QB as you move him from sideline to sideline. the QB can throw to this receiver. this is to mimic scrambling and getting a receiver open who is covered.

-----

new play in pass slot 1 - 2TE SHORT

the TE goes to center field and will mirror QB

other modified plays with the "rolling":

Pass Slot 2 - SG-2B PROTECT

the TE runs his usual route and will then mirror the QB

pass slot 2 - 2TE QUICK

the WR1 comes from top to bottom and will mirror the QB

pass slot 3 - TRIPS DRAG

the WR1 drags across field and will mirror the QB

pass slot 4 - OI 5 OUT

the TE will follow the QB

----

well, these are the first of their kind - let me know how they play (they should work good against MAN, but my MAN is too busy to test with me...so I have just been testing against COM)

My comments:

Offense:

Orton: A better representation than the 9/27 version.

Moreno/McGahee: Cutting their Max Speed for REC. I can live with it.

Royal: A better representation than the 9/27 version.

Decker: I like the Toughness increase. He's a much more capable run blocker than Royal in real life, so that's a welcome change.

Walton: Good.

Beadles: Better than 9/27 version.

Kuper: Good. Stats indicate that he's the 2nd best OT on the Broncos line, which he is.

Clady: Right about where he should be as the best OT on the Broncos line.

Franklin: Well done. He does this move in real-life games where he lowers his head down, charges forward, and whiffs on everything in front of him. He's a rookie, after all, but I laugh when I see that happen. His TSB stats are very much acceptable.

Defense:

Vickerson/Bunkley/Ayers: Clones of each other. I have no idea if it would be possible to differentiate the three. Vickerson is a 3-tech penetrating Under Tackle, but his stats should be the worst of the three. If you plan on making a change there, cut his toughness.

As for the other two:

- Ayers sets the edges, rarely breaks contain, and has sound discipline as a run stopper.

- Bunkley's an athletic guy and just so happens to be the best DT on the Broncos roster.

It might be a case where there really isn't much to be done here as far as TSB is concerned. I don't know.

Mays: Very MUCH welcome changes. (-) INT from the 9/27 version, but in real games, is an explosive run stopper, blitzer, and likely to cause collateral damage. Acceleration and Toughness would be his strengths in TSB terms, so this was a VERY nice, accurate change.

Goodman: Got faster? Wha? I would suggest:

RCB, andre GOODMAN, Face=0xca, #21, 25, 19, 25, 19, 38, 19 ,[1, 42 ]

Champ: Should be faster than 19. I don't like this change. I would suggest:

LCB, champ BAILEY, Face=0x8e, #24, 19, 19, 31, 19, 38, 19 ,[1, 87 ]

I don't think that breaks anything.

Hope you take those into consideration.

Defense def needs a bump in MS across the board.

Cameron Wake is listed as a silver player and doesn't seems to be any better than anyone else.

Same with my O-Line. They are listed in the silver section and right after I hike the ball, i have two guys trying to kill me on every play. Looks like they are coming in from the center and left guard positions.

I dunno what you juiced Peyton Hillis with, but he's faster than everyone on my team. He had three runs where the defense was not gaining on him to catch him. Had the field been 1000 yards, they never would have caught him. And Hillis has some kills, but he's not that fast. Hillis had 213 yards rushing against me with just 10 carries. That might be a dynamic of the defense overall needing a bump in MS.

Brandon Marshall needs some more breaking tackles love. This guy has one hellava stiff arm and is one of the hardest WRs to take down. He will punish you if you tackle him high.

Wasup Buck/ Rehawl!

You guys officially have the ROM to beat for 2011!

Sunday was a great day for my PATs especially since the Bengals did them a favor by beating the Bills up!

Pats 4-1 Bills 4-1 Jets 2-2 (Sanchez looks like he needs mommy without Mangold :LOL) Miami 0-4 (Whack Sporano :LOL)

The day was made even greater when we used your ROM to implement a 6-man tournament with a $20 buy-in.

Some guys haven't played TSB since the 8-bit days and they were impressed by the work going into making it feel modern.

Since I was the only one with the most recent experience playing, I was prevented from using the PATs so i went with the BEARs and a modded playbook..(check below)

Did pretty good but lost the final game vs. a cousin playing with Vikings 21-17 to take the $120 pot!

Thanks for creating an extra element to add to football sundays man!

PEACE

p.s.

A couple of guys lost games because their starting QB got injured and the back-ups just play terrible.

This makes things doublly hard if you're already down more than 2 scores. HERES AN IDEA!

Instead of tweaking the attributes of ALL back-ups, why not make the back-ups come into games already set as EXCELLENT CONDITION.

Then by performance the condition can change.

I mean, some of these guys almost never play in real life, so they should always be in excellent shape!

I'm sure this'll make games much more playable if the unfortunate happens.

PEACE
