Tecmo Super Bowl was snubbed :(

Recommended Posts

I think the hall of fame is trying to recognize games that impacted the industry as a whole.

Pong WAS the first generation of video games. It is basically what paved the way for what we have today.

Pac-Man was the first game using a microprocessor that could be considered "Wildly successful." It paved the way for how programming in general is done on consoles today. Previously, you had to wire everything inside the arcade machine.

Super Mario Brothers was the face of the console that singlehandedly saved the video game industry. Without Mario, I don't think the NES could have been as popular as it was, and without the NES we would not have many consoles that we have today (or Tecmo Super Bowl).

Tetris was a revolutionary puzzle game which helped open up developers to new types of games. This was one of two achievements, the other being the fact that it saved the original Gameboy. This is, again, something that paved the way for hand-held gaming.

Doom was the frontrunner for FPS style games, which is the most dominant form of gaming right now.

Finally, World of Warcraft perfected the MMO style of gameplay which is now flooding markets. It is definitely a front-runner for the current era.

Other games I would consider are Starcraft, Metroidvania (either/or), and and probably monkey island. These games solidified or created their genre.

WOW made the video game HOF, but TSB, Legend of Zelda (OG or Ocarina of Time), and Pokemon didn't get in?

All they woulda' had to do was remind the voting committy that Johnny Johnson was in Tecmo Superbowl.........that woulda' done the trick.

FIFA, no? EA's largest franchise and the world's #1 sports game year in and year out for 20+ years?

While that deserves props(thought Madden was EA's biggest - learn something new every day), IMHO it didn't change or innovate the industry enough to warrant going into the 1st HOF class alongside Pong, Mario, etc.

I agree.

In addition, FIFA is popular because it is the mainstream video game for the most POPULAR SPORT IN THE WORLD. It's like Madden, except it's bought in 40 countries instead of just one.

Minecraft I say no, because if you;re going to induct a "world-building" game, then it HAS to to be Sim City or the Civilization series. They did more for that genre and have been around much longer than Minecraft. That one can wait it's turn, if it ever gets one.

It's not about world building. It's about changing an entire generation of gamers. The reach Minecraft has is unparalleled.

yeah, I always thought WoW was a poor man's Everquest.  but I guess when you get a south park episode for your game, you get in the hall of fame.

speaking of video game movies, anyone see King of Kong documentary?  classic.  anyways, Donkey Kong probably ate a lot of people's quarters.

yeah mk2 was the one I played the most in arcades, a little of 3.  but dudes, mostly asian, would be piled up laying quarters down while people were playing...winner stayed on.  pretty exciting times, if you were a noob, you got totally destroyed.

snk made sweet games.

the arcade scene is still booming.  especially in japan, but also US.  around here, midwest, a lot of arcades are just inside a mini-golf/go-cart businesses.  but I haven't since witnessed the man-v-man arcade action like I saw back in the early/mid 90s.  I'm sure it's around.

I also played a shitton of Arch Rivals during the summer at a gas station down the road from my grandpas house.  and I would never deny popping a few quarters in Raiden if I saw it (still do).
