How do you make one player seasons interesting?

Recommended Posts

Hello Tecmo faithful!

I just got done playing a season only running the ball with Joe Caravello of the San Diego Chargers (allowing punting, FGs, and returns by other players). It was ABSOLUTELY the most exciting and entertaining season I have ever played and I cannot wait to find other ways to switch it up. (Thanks to the Proehl reverse thread for the idea btw)

Playing with an ass-terrible RB was a great learning tool and promoted some pretty bizarre strategies that I had never thought of before. If you have a thumb of iron, I would strongly urge you to try it (and post your results)!

So what methods have you heard of / used to make a season interesting? Field goals only? Defensive scores only? I'd love to hear what other fun challenges there are!

Yeah, I went 19-0 with Pitt without running an offensive play. Def TDs, FGs, Safeties and Kick/Punt Returns was enough. It's pretty easy the first 10 weeks or so, then gets more interesting. Take a worse D for a bigger challenge I guess.

I worked with Joe Caravello in El Segundo California back in 2007.  He was a refinery operator for a while and now I believe he is a Maintenance Supervisor.  He was also part owner or owned the liquor license for the Stick and Stein restaurant around the way from the refinery on Highway 1. Last time I talked to him he told me how much he disliked Dexter Manley while on the Redskins.  Used to go against him in practice every day being Dexter was a DE and he was a TE.  Said Dexter got away with what ever he wanted to, while guys like him were held accountable for everything.  I guess that is what you call Talent Tolerance. Any way when I saw the name it made me think of that.

Try getting to the Super Bowl using only the qb sneak up the middle with Grogan on offense. Nothing is more frustrating.

That sounds agonizing! Thanks for the suggestion! I'll get right on that after my Johnson-less Cardinals season!

Interesting! I was curious what he got into after the NFL.

Thanks for sharing!

Dong, another idea to tug on:

Try taking whatever team you most recently won on OG TSB with, grab a rom for each year thru the present-day, and give it a tractor-pull, seeing how many championships you can win with the same team

My brother and I tried a few different things growing up to make it more challenging. Obviously, the "no offense" challenge is a very good one, as are the "one play" ideas like Proehl reverse and others. We did a combination of some other things:

  • Play with all offensive back-ups in
  • No scrambling with the QB passed the line of scrimmage
  • No controlling a defender in the secondary
  • No controlling a defender in the secondary or LB (DL only with no lurch of course)
  • No running out of bounds (more fumbles)
