I’m thinking about coming down on Friday. Is anyone interested in playing a couple of games? I really need the practice. I haven’t played the game since 2004, the NES version since 1999, and against live competition since 1996. Also, I’ve never played by tournament rules. The only rules we had were to rotate controllers and first pick (the person with first pick could choose any team they wanted and the other person could choose any of the remaining teams).

I'll write a short re-cap later as I am truly exhausted.  But I now know how difficult it is to organize a tournament (Chet and Josh H, Chris V and AJ - you guys are pretty awesome for putting really huge tournaments).  But a special thank you to those who helped me out today (Jonny, Isaac, Robert, Ernie, Dan) and thank you Jesse James Comics.

First off, thank you Jesse James Comics for hosting us and being so cool.  Thanks to the Phx Tecmo Crew (you know who you are – for helping me run the tournament, I was stressed out/nervous and that’s just me in a nut shell).  To the new breed, we appreciate you guys for showing up and throwing down your Tecmo skills, it’s just nice to see this tournament grow in size and everyone was just so cool with each other.

World cup group play worked out well as we had exactly 16 players.  I ended up winning my group (I actually had the highest point diff of all 16 but the spreadsheet I was using actually capped 28 points for maximum point diff so Diastamasta (Isaac) received the 1 seed and I had the 2 seed – lesson learned, check spreadsheet calcs).

Round Robin

My first game was with Marcus (MIN) and I was WAS.  A few early stops made the game deficit too much for a comeback.  31-0. Appreciate you showing up for the 3rd event, you are a staple to the AZ tourneys.

Second game was against Don P (KC) and I was CIN.  Fulcher was insane and the game was in hand by the 1st qtr.  Don, I’m glad Nate Gunn (ngunn) introduced us and it was a pleasure meeting you and I know you will get better with more play.  I truly didn’t mean to run up the score and it the end it didn’t even get me the 1 seed – doh!  55-0.

Third game was against Robert H (PIT) and I was NYJ.  Very tough game, as Robert knew how to use the Steelers D very well.  I managed to move the ball well, but 2 fummies hurt and I had one called played INT.  My defense managed to keep PIT from scoring a second score so we went to OT at 7-7.  Robert won coin toss, but on 3rd down I was able to read a pass and go for the INT on his side of the field.  Few plays later I was able to run it in to win 13-7.  VGG and thanks for finding us on FB and playing as well as helping input scores.  I’m sure you will be at AZTSB5

Single Elim Bracket

Jerome E (HOU) and I was the 9ers.  Again, the outcome was decided after the first qtr. with some long JJs and CCs to Rice and solid pass defense.  Second half Jerome was able to adjust and moved the ball well, but it was a little late.  It was nice meeting you for the first time along with Don and Robert.  35-7

Double Elim Bracket

Dan W – founder of AZTSB (NFC) and I played with the AFC.  Fummies gave the momentum shift for the AFC as they rattled 21 points in the second qtr.  Dan played well with clock management but with the deficit, it was hard to make a comeback.  24-14. I am sure you will catch me and give me my first loss against you…I can’t give you anymore tips.

Rana (PIT) and I was PHX.  Rana hasn’t played live tecmo in 18+ years, but he picked up the game play like riding a bike.  If he keeps at it, he will be very solid in future tournaments.  7-7 game but then a fumble by me gave an opportunity and Rana took it.  I believe PHX had a manned INT and another lost fumble happened in the second half, and again he made me pay.  7-28 was the final score, and I have to say, this one was tough to swallow.  But all credit was due to Rana, he stuck to his guns and learned so much in 24 hours from our scrims.

Luke (CIN) and I had DET.  DETs tough defense forced punts and scrambling with Peete and a couple of big runs by Barry helped build a lead.  It was good chatting with you during our game and hopefully you’ll be around for the next event, good luck finishing Pharm school.  24-7.

Clint (MIN) and I was running with (WAS).  A good back and forth game, and the Tecmo gods were shining on me with two fumble recoveries, one recovery @ the one yard line (real close to a TD score) late in the second half that would have given Clint the one point lead.  A final drive and FG makes it 16-7.  Great seeing an original tournament participant and again, hope you can make our future tournaments.  You taught me to ‘work’ for my scores and I appreciate it.

Loser Bracket Final - Rana (KC) and I had CHI.  All Bears as the defense play call was on point.  Okoye had some nice runs but when it came to key 3rd downs, I was able to stop Rana.  42-7. Rana ended up taking 3rd and I was happy that he quickly learned enough to make it deep in his first AZ tournament (first live playing experience in 18 years).

Championship - Isaac (DEN) and I played with SD.  All Isaac after I tied it 7-7.  He score before the half (times 2 TD) and I wasn’t able to put points on the board before half.  Scores again in the 3rd and it was out of hand afterwards.  I threw an INT and had a fumble loss b4 half but I don’t think I could keep up with Disastamasta.

Three runner ups to him really is tough to swallow, but I mean to be the best you have to beat the best – no excuses.  Congrats champ and you definitely deserve all the credit.  Hope you and I can rep Arizona if Madison XI is a go.  Regulator have any tips how you overcame two runnerups to Chet at MadisonVIII and IX?  J

Onto AZTSB5…Have a great rest of the summer fellas.

No doubt it is a bit stressful running a tournament as I put one on last month (Swamp Bowl). From getting trophies made to setting up the venue to playing games, all the while keeping things in order during the tournament.  Not to mention the ordering of T-shirts for my tournament. I have a ton of respect for all the guys who do their best to put a tournament together. Hopefully I can get more help next tournament of mine. I must note that my wonderful wife helped out a ton with registering players on tournament day and doing the spreadsheet input during the tournament.

Keep up the great work Will. It will pay off eventually, I in a way it already has because your tournament was a success with 16 guys playing.
