PART 1

Gannonball Run - Madison Tecmo X - A Tecmo Christmas

Madison prep tends to begin at the same time that the official announcement comes down - usually just around the new year. This year was no different. Madison prep encompasses many things, including umpteen online pick up games, live console get togethers, outfit considerations, among many other rituals. Fortunately, for many of us in the midwest, there is sure to be a tournament nearby leading up to the big one, as a precursor to Madison in March. In Detroit, we host the Tecmo Kumite.

This past February was the 2nd annual tournament O’Toole and I have hosted in Detroit, in preparation for Madison (in addition to one in Chicago in 2010). O’Toole and Mort threw down, in 3 straight 1 pt. ball games, crowning Mort the 2014 Kumite champion, and sending O’Toole off as the runner-up for the 2nd straight year. We hadn’t discussed this together, but Regulator and I both learned on that day, thanks to 32oz. craft beers in Mason jars - that large consumption, and Tecmo do not mix. A big thank you to my beautiful wife, Megan for her help throughout the tournament, and for taking care of me that night. God knows I needed it.

Fast forward to the second weekend in March. Madison Tecmo X weekend is upon us! O’Toole and I have several hours to kill before we pick up tecmobowl.org do it all - Kamphuna8, at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. The number of hours this guy has put in for the greater good of Tecmo cannot be measured. Snagging him from the airport is the least we can do. We hook up with Flo for some ‘street tecmo’ as we like to call it, at this coffee shop in Wicker Park, The Wormhole. The establishment had a rich theme, chalk full of 80’s swag, such as a DeLorean from Back to the Future on a loft, a Castle Greyskull on a nearby shelf, a framed NES gaming collage, and of course an old school wooden boxed in 27’ TV set, with a top-loading Nintendo sitting atop of it.

They only had a copy of Tecmo Bowl, among many other titles, so I just had to run to the car to grab my copy of the game we were committing the entire weekend to: Tecmo Super Bowl.

The Tecmo sparring among the 3 of us was a great way to shake off some of those console cobwebs, atleast for Flo’s sake - in preparation for Madison. The coffee was great, as was the nearly 5 hours of gaming we got under our belts, prior to departure. Thanks a ton to Toolie’s buddy for showing us such a cool place, that I unfortunately missed out on while I lived there, a handful of years ago!

We depart for O’Hare at around 5:30pm cst, with plenty of time to grab Kamp, considering Chicago traffic, for the arrival of his 6:27pm flight from Seattle. Kamp lets us know via text, that his flight was actually arriving 15-20 min early, which was just absolutely perfect timing! As we pull up to the terminal, out comes Kamp. If it weren’t for security ensuring we didn’t violate the No Stopping, Standing, Parking sign, certainly big bro hugs would have occurred. It’s a quick sub-3 hour drive up to Madison, and it passed ever so quickly, meeting Craig for the first time, and getting to know him a little better. Despite a couple of failed off-ramp exit attempts, at about 9:45 we finally reach the Friday night, Tecmo Mecca, that is the Super 8 east. We quickly check-in, drop our bags off, and grab the 12 pack of Founders All-Day IPA, I’ve got chilling in the trunk, as we take foot for Casa De Vogt, on the 3rd floor. We are greeted by many great friends, and Tecmoer’s alike within those 4 walls, including Vogtcd, BigMV, Joey Vogt, Daboys, Ruble, Hake. Throughout the night, several other Tecmoers dropped by, including Mort, Louis, Jeff B, Lucas S, and surely others I am leaving out. The amount of talent in that room was pretty incredible, as at one point, I came to the realization that 8 of my hand selected Madison Madness Sweet 16 were in that room.

The delicious Founders IPA that was being consumed would be my first sip of alcohol since the Tecmo Kumite, in early Febuary. It went down ever so smoothly, and the lesson learned at the Kumite was evident - Tecmo and suds (in large quantities) do not mix. It was nice to get it out of my system the night before, rather than continuing the usual tourney day debauchery that tends to go down.

I don’t recall the results of the Pre-Tecmo X Chrysler Town and Country Miniature 9-man tournament, but I know Joey Vogt played really well, as we had heard he did on the car ride in.

It was a great couple of hours of Tecmo there, before we headed over to Manyo’s room, for even more partying and Tecmoing.

Despite O’Toole’s wishes for us to get to bed, I reminded him of my personal submission that 2-2:30 bedtime would be sufficient enough sack time. Things began to become a little hazy, but there were many other Tecmoers partaking in Friday night festivities over at Manyo’s, including Coconuts, Ryanp, and many others. Sure enough, we stayed up partying, and getting in a handful of great games until just about 2:30, and then it was off to bed for a couple hours of rest, before the 9am SAT morning check-in at Badger Bowl.

Nerves set in, as I didn’t get great rest, but alas, Tecmo X was upon us. Many of us grabbed the free continental breakfast at Super 8, before heading over to Badger Bowl, sans fresh coffee, or OJ, to our dismay.

Upon arrival at the Badger Bowl, there were many hellos to friends and Tecmoers alike. Both rooms were set up to a level of extraordinary brilliant execution. I double checked with tournament organizer Jon Bailey, aka QB Browns to see if he needed my system from the car, and then headed over to the stage where Dave Murray had the stream set up. Despite being sick all week, this guy did not think twice about being there for this community. His set up for streaming the games live at twitch.tv/tecmobowl was pristine, and just all around very asthetic, and user friendly. In addition to this, his wife unfortunately caused him to mistakenly leave all of his clothing behind for the weekend! But he was still dude enough to tote with him the Bo Jackson jersey that he had been promising me, that he had ordered that was too small for him. A very cool gesture. It looks great bud! Thanks again man! I never got a chance to buy you that beer(s), so I will definitely take a rain check, til next time!

Near the end of our conversation, Dave made a reference to another Dave - Bruddog.  I asked where he was, what he was wearing, and he quickly pointed him out.  So I ran over to say hello to the guy that has done so much for Tecmo and this community.  Dave (Bruddog) - It was great putting a face on a dude that I've played with for over a decade, and has contributed so much!  it was so awesome that you were able to make it out, and it was great meeting you man!

We were graced with a wonderful Tecmo X introduction by Josh H, including an awesome Lawrence Taylor tribute/highlight reel. You almost forget what football was like back then, and how violent, and dominant that man was. It’s sad knowing that the NFL no longer allows that style of play. The tone was set however. It was business time. Gannonball Run, Madison Tecmo X was underway.

Group Play: Double Elimination, mini-bracket
Group 6:

I am the favorite, and the top seed, along with the Juice-Off, defending champion, Adam G. (Garbage) as the #2. The top seed kicks off group play with the 8 seed throughout the entire session, with games scheduled accordingly throughout the mini-group bracket, 2v7, 3v6, etc.

A matchup, suggested by Hake and Joey Vogt the night prior, in which I didn’t love at the time upon announcement, ultimately was very fitting to my style of play - so I gave it a shot, as I call the RAI / MIA matchup. Kevin B takes the RAI, and I get a couple of JJ’ing DBs, and my guy, Dan Marino, and the Dolphins. I was able to bottle up Bo Jackson and the Raiders run game, while I got a JJ pick with Jarvis Williams (as discussed the night before), and rolled to the 28 max pt, differential victory.

Following the game, I learned of many first round upsets, including Orenga, Moulds, Kamphuna, BgBoud, and a near Rico loss, in which he bypassed a game tying FG, and scoring from inside the 5 on the final play. There was also a rumor going around that Troy H. (a player that has knocked me out of two previous Madison tournaments in the final seconds) had been upset in the first round as well, but that turned out to be a false report. Kamphuna suffered the dreaded fate of The Jealousy (a term coined at Chicago I, that essentially means: fumble) four times in game 1. G.O.O.B. was the only comfort, and criticism I could offer my fellow car-mate, but unfortunately things never got better for Craig. Below is an image of Orenga’s posse and his frustration with his Game 1 loss to Bryan P.
f41SkSKtISi0SPHaO4v8aL4V_h1hMnKlTZ6XPLG4

Game 2: I win the toss again, and call a MIN / TB matchup. Nathan W. takes Tampa, in which I was hoping for, but I was happy taking the Gannonball Run karma - Vikings club. Nathan and Haddix played some very good defense on the first drive, where I completed at least one 4th down, and a couple 3rd and longs - but eventually scored, taking up nearly the entire quarter. I was worried. Nathan seemed like a real solid player. Tension was high, but eased substantially as, I caught a glimpse of his playbook, featuring plays I would never use, especially if I am the inferior tapper (which I am most of the time, but not in this matchup). Gannon serves as a mere cheerleader on the bench, but Wilson / Anthony Carter was able to take advantage of an out of position Haddix a number of times, en route to my second shutout, and max pt. diff victory.
2Xcl6WG6IjHWLDj2ElEhhXJeLA_QzDh6_rekQM0J

Game 3: Living up to my newly laid out ritual of no alcohol during tourney play, I hadn’t put anything into my system other than coffee and water. It was beyond 2:00pm, and breakfast was a long time ago. I ordered some greasy food to combat the hangover from Friday night, prior to kickoff of my 2-0 v.s. 2-0, Game 3, to crown a group champion. Unfortunately however, the food did not arrive until I was about to kick off with Kris S (Sammie Smith). The bar counter was in a close enough distance to my corner station 6, in that Peter was able to partially understand my gesture, of “I’m scarfing down some food, please let the losers bracket game play before mine.” He didn’t fully grasp my sentiment however, as they just left the system open, awaiting my consumption, but it worked out well anyway. As I finished up, and headed over, as did my opponent, Kris S to battle it out for the Group 6 title.

Having just discussed it with someone, a DEN / SD matchup is what came to mind. Kris takes Elway and the Broncos, while I was happy to take Gil Byrd, and the superior Charger defense. Byrd gets a JJ pick of Elway on the game’s first play, and the defense is able to pick off Elway 3 more times, en route to victory. I did however, come up just a yard short of a TD as time expired, and a max point differential (Max: 28 x 3 = 84). But 3-0, and a 77 pt. differential, I will take however, leading to the field of 64.

I was very proud and happy to remain unbeaten in Madison Group play, at 15-0, whilst not allowing a single point in the 3 games thus far.

YGYLRsMNdfv36rI6YRnpJlxH2vfCdl_7EQ15U9Fc

I was able to get over to Group 12 to catch the finale. Toolie is able to remain unblemished in Madison group play, knocking off the Godfather, aka Rod Woodson, aka, Matt K, earning a 80 pt. differential in the 3 games. Mort also earned the same 80 pt. differential. While I was happy for my Tecmo brethren, I was worried my 77 would drop me further down the seeding that I would like to be.

We’ve now got about an hour until the 64 man, single elimination bracket is announced. However, there were some great 3-1 games going on, that would crown a runner up in each group. I caught most of Kamphuna’s unfortunate loss to Edward S, DAL over NYJ, where he just couldn’t get anything going. It was a very sad moment, seeing Kamp go down, as the Tecmo gods were just not going to allow this to be his day. He certainly has more to prove, and if anything, it all but ensures a return visit to Madison.

During this downtime, I was able to say hello to many Tecmoers that I hadn’t had a chance to say hello to just yet (some for the first time), including Segathon, Gats, Hoigaard, among others. Segathon caught a nice selfie of a handful of us (Left to right: Luke C, Sega, O’Toole, O’Dell, (unknown), Mort). I apologize to the unknown for not introducing myself.

As Bailey, and massive tourney helper, Larry input the players onto the 64 man bracket, we were graced with the best costume contest. There were some great ones out there, including the circa 2009 Tony Orenga, Beaker from the Muppets. Tecmo Ninja had been the clear cut favorite throughout the day however, to run away with the $100 prize. But at the last minute, a new candidate appeared. The Tecmo Bunny captured many people’s attention, and his 3 minutes of anonymous costume get up was able to pay his beer tab, leaving the star throwing Tecmo Ninja searching for answers as to why he wore his uncomfortable costume for the entire 12+ hour day.

64 man - Single Elimination bracket
My group play success earned me a #2 seed in the Burt Reynolds region, as it did with Toolie as well in the Dom DeLuise region. I was very happy to see Regulator, as the top seed of the region, far on the other side of the bracket, where I wouldn’t have to play him until the Elite 8, if I were to get there.

PART 2

Round 1 (64):

I draw #15 Peter B., one of, I believe, 4 Burkhardt brothers to make the single elimination bracket.  Very impressive indeed!  Peter wins the toss, and calls MIN / RAM.  I’m a guy that is best with a good QB, so I take Everett, and the high powered Rams attack.  Peter and the Vikings put up a tremendous fight, trailing just 17-14, early 4th.  I am faced with a tough decision, a 4th and 4 from around my own 30, with the games’ worst kicker.  I decide to put confidence in my defense, that I wouldn’t allow a TD, and decide to attempt to get the 6 pt. lead, ensuring a FG doesn’t tie it.  Lansford bangs it through, the D gets a stop on downs, and a late insurance score, as I take this one. Over on the other side of the 64-man bracket in the Dom DeLuise Region, #2 seed Toolie wins his group play rematch with #15 The Godfather, in round 1 as well.

Round 2, Single Elimination (32):

During my round 1 game, I couldn’t help but look over to my left to see how Jeff B. was doing.  I kept telling myself to cut it out, and take one game at a time, as I still have to get by Peter B, before even thinking about what my next opponent has going on.  Jeff B. is the guy that knocked off BigMv in the NFL Films documentary, KC over CHI, a couple years prior, and last season was among the Elite 8 finalists as well.  I didn’t know a ton about his game, but knew he liked to pound the rock, and play some great defense (a characteristic of many perennial top contenders).  I knew I wanted to give him someone that wasn’t going to kill me with the run (similar to the thinking against Troy H. in the past).  I begin to realize the importance of winning the coin toss, as you get deeper into these tournaments.

I do infact win the toss, and debate a matchup for a good, solid minute+.  I came up with an HOU / NYG matchup call.  I think most people like HOU in this matchup, but if he decides against it, I know I’ve got a great shot at it, getting that potent pass attack for myself.  He decides on the Oilers.  Behind an early turnover, I was able to maintain ball control with the Giants ground game, and quick strike attack.  In the 2nd quarter, both Simms, and Meggett get into good, and a last second CC to Meggett at WR gets me a 2 score lead, and the ball to start the 3rd.  I believe Jeff gets a stop of me on my opening drive of the half, but Moon could never get it going, with a defense hounding each and everyone of his passes.  By the 4th, I believe Simms, and Meggett both get into excellent, and the Giants shut the door midway through the 4th - taking out a great opponent in Jeff B.  I seemingly got each and every single break in this one.  I am certain, we will meet again.

The Michiganders are performing well.  Toolie also advances past Justin E. and into the Sweet 16!

Round 3, Single Elimination (Sweet 16):

I draw the Rikster.  Rikster is a great player that is playing in his 8th Madison tournament.  I am aware how solid of a player he is, however, I have never played him (outside of maybe a short session at Orenga’s in years past), and don’t know much about his game.  I seek the council of a couple players that are familiar with his style of play, that will go nameless.  I am advised not to give him someone he could chuck it with, and that he hates the Cardinals.  Unfortunately, I too hate the Cardinals, as Johnny Johnson single handedly cost me a Final Four appearance, and victory over eventual champion in Tecmo VII, Jimmy B, with his 2 fumbles in the final minutes.  However, I did like to think I enjoyed playing with them, prior to that unfortunate circumstance, and felt that a PIT / PHX matchup would fall under the advice I was given.  Rikster takes the Steelers.  Donning the 90’s Apex One, Wayne Fontes, Lions polo all afternoon - I ask Rikster permission to allow me to run to the car for a change attire.

I come back with the shirt that I pitched to Flo to create for the tournament.  The shirt was the Johnny Johnson “Hidden Attributes” tee, inspired by tborg’s infamous TBK - to the gathering crowd’s approval and also dismay.

Pittsburgh strikes first, “eating out” much of the first quarter.  Upon gaining possession, I couldn’t have gotten into a worse conditions situation offensively, as at the start of the second stanza: Rosy, Johnny Johnson, Sikahema, and E.Jones all go into bad, and remain there the entire game.  The 44/38 Tupa was going to have to move those chains on his own, keeping it tight to the cuff.

Tupa plays a very conservative game, throwing just one 3rd down, desparation INT - I believe, my very first of the tournament.  Rod Woodson is able to come away with the INT, but on the return, the Jealousy strikes the Rikster!  Who picks it up you ask!?  None other than, Johnny Johnson, putting out his cigarette right on the palm of those who have mocked him, and TBK’s declaration of anyone possibly playing above their Tecmo given attributes.

Al Del Greco boots his 3rd FG of the contest, with about 4:30 to play, giving O’Dell/PHX their first lead.  A nice KR, and a few chunk plays, gets Rikster inside the PHX 35 yard line.  A Brister scramble to the left (upper) sideline gets Rikster even closer to that GW FG, but he fails to G.O.O.B, and the QB coughs it up, with just under 2:00 to play!  PHX pounces on it, and later gets a pretty ridiculous CC to my only guy in good, a 75rec Ricky Proehl, to milk away the clock, and my second Elite 8 Madison appearance.  I’m sorry about your misfortune in this one Rikster, but honestly considering the conditions I was dealt - it definitely went both of our ways.

After the game, I unfortunately learn that O’Toole gets taken out by BigMv in the Sweet 16, as just one Michigander remains.

Elite 8, Double Elimination

Regulator

A point mentioned earlier, it is just so crucial to win the toss as the tournament gets deeper.  Regulator calls a NYJ / DAL matchup.  I take the Jets, as I feel I play well with them, and I don’t want to give him the better of the two defenses.  As we all know Kyle loves these types of matchups, and has beaten me a number of times in these contests in various tournaments.  However, he does make mention that I am the first one to EVER take the Jets against him in this matchup, to my surprise.  However, on second thought, after being dismantled by the Regulator, he is probably right.  I should have taken the Cowboys, and not given him that type of run game.  Great game Kyle, you killed it man.  The Elite 8 is where I had myself going out in my bracket - to you, my eventual champion.  But alas, this is the double elimination portion of the tourney.  Despite being in the money, which I am happy about, we’ve still got a shot at this!

PDr_r6zWAe64rBoKKSyRlh_0_UaIj1okP5D9Oo37

Losers Bracket ( :cool::

I get Vogtcd who too just got his first loss, to Jimmy B.  This one goes onto the live stream of the tournament at www.twitch.tv/tecmobowl.  And btw, kudos to the entire broadcast team, as I caught a small portion of some streaming once I got home.  Kweh, Kevin C, and Ryanp did a great job on the broadcast!  Also, major, major kudos to Dave M. for making the trek from Florida despite being ill throughout the entire weekend.  The stream looked absolutely fantastic, and we are so very happy that you could do this for our entire community.  Thank you.

But onto the game:  Chris calls a WAS / TB matchup.  With a lot of consideration, I take the games’ best defensive player, and the much better QB in the contest in Haddix/Vinny and the Bucs.

We were able to minimize the Skins motion rush attack, while keeping a blanket on the potent WR threats.  Gary Anderson had a nice day, going over 100 on the ground.  In a tie game, early 4th, Vinny is able to elude the blitzing defenders on the called, pass 2 R/S, and finds Mark Carrier, who had a big day, to grab the lead 21-14.  I believe I then got a T.O.  Once I got RB Perkins into EXC. it allowed me to insert a speed component at WR2 in G.Anderson, who hauls in a shotgun timed JJ near the goal line to put this one out of reach.  Vinny also was extremely efficient, not allowing a ball to hit the ground on the day.  The game of attrition (conditions) got you in this one Chris.  Well played my man!

Losers bracket, Double Elimination (Final 6)

I draw Skunker, who had just lost to Chet in the double elimination portion of the bracket.  Just like the last game, winner moves on with 1L, while the loser is out, tied for 5th place.  Skunker calls a SD / CIN matchup.  I debate a bit, thinking about taking the better team in CIN, but finally I decide, I just don’t play all that well with Cincy for whatever reason, and find SD a bit more balanced, both offensively, and defensively in my mind.  A very debatable thought indeed.

Skunker plays a great ball game.  I definitely had my share of poor breaks in this one, with dropped balls, at least a fumble or two, but I feel I was still outplayed, and Skunker was deserved of the W.  GG my man.

3Fjzu-mGV8OMSOAOkRXKKrEzjHSBUTk3pDOZpLoh

I am out of the tournament, but I am extremely happy with how my day went.  I gave myself the best shot at this thing, maintaining sobriety the entire day, something that many of us have found hard to do at these tournaments in the past.  I also placed in the money for the first time in tourney play, which was real nice.  I played my ass off, and gave it all I had.  Tying for 5th place in a 256 player field, full of tremendous talent, was certainly a great feat, that I am very proud of.

The crowd, including myself for really the first time all day, were then able to enjoy a real treat.  The KC / MIA game between BigMv, and Skunker was just an absolutely amazing contest, which saw BigMv hold on late for the 21-20 victory.

oUBCJs7s4I6ZaDj-acw_c1WyAKIwau23jkoI7nrN

Then there were just 3.  BigMv gets Chet, and for once, can’t out-juice his opponent.  As discussed on the car ride home, this has got to be a difficult transition to have to make, playing a style that differs so drastically from your normal playing style.  Chet is able to take out BigMv 23-10, KC over CHI.

The rematch was set.  Regulator and Chet take part in their 3rd straight Madison championship.  Chet won the first two, but Regulator was on a mission all afternoon, already beating Chet in his previous contest, and dropping Chet into the losers bracket.

The two go at it with a SD / DEN matchup, certainly a theme of the afternoon.  Regulator plays spirited ball, especially defensively, allowing Chet and the Charger offense just 28 total yards.  Kyle would not be denied.  It was his day.  Regulator takes down Chet (his 3rd try in as many years) 14-0, earning his first Tecmo Madison championship.  You were a beast all afternoon, and I’m so happy for you man!  Congratulations Kyle!

What an amazing afternoon.  Thank you so very much to everyone that was involved, from the tournament participants, to the people who throw this great party, year in and year out:  Jon Bailey, Larry, Murray, Chet, Josh, Orenga, the COD, Erin, Jamie, Chet’s GF, and anyone else I may have forgotten.  You guys are truly amazing, and we are all ever so grateful!

Before we all disbursed for the Plaza, “Online Garbage” were able to snap a couple of awesome photos, with too many names to be mentioned.  One thing of note however, is the HSTL online league’s presence at the tourney.  The HSTL is online Tecmo’s longest running league, which began back in 2000-2001 I believe, and is currently beginning it’s 29th season.  Of the current 28 owners, an astounding 14 of us made it to the tournament, including numerous HSTL alums.  Many of us gathered to be a part of the images below.

The day had taken a toll on us.  Toolie and I were absolutely exhausted, yet we still made it over to The Plaza Tavern, a post-tournament ritual, for a couple hours of good friends and beers.  The Plaza was the home to the first 4 Madison Tecmo tournaments, and is definitely still a big part of the tournaments tradition.  It was awesome hanging out with all of you for one last time, until next year.  It was especially entertaining listening to Josh explain the value of the rare Gannonball Run coins that were used during gameplay.  Some people might tell you stocks, and bonds, or gold and silver, but the rare Gannonball Run coin is surely the thing of the future!

Awesome, awesome time guys.  Thank you so much.  Hopefully the #Tecmo XI #CliftonHanger isn’t too harsh!

Despite the very lengthy recap, there is a ton I assuredly left out.  However, I just wanted to make sure I added a little blurb about meeting Bruddog (within the PART 1).  You can find this excerpt just below the portion with Murray...
