My Madtown Excursion - LONG

Finally finished my weekend recap. Pardon for the delay, wanted to make sure I got this right. Figured this needed it's own

I leave Friday around 10am to meet Manyo. He says that he's riding with Dave Murray and Bruddog to Sophie's Bakery to eat, but then says they're closed and they're at Madison Sourdough. Sweet! Kinda stoked at meeting these wizards of Tecmo. I get there a bit hazy, and Dave is wearing this awesome Fett shirt. Introduce myself to these two gentlemen, chat for a while, and me and Manyo are off to the room to play. After a moment of clarity, we sit down and rock out quite a few games, only dropping one to him, but played me tough every one. Pretty soon, Bruddog and Dave show up and me and Bruddog played 2, him whooping me 1st 31-14, with my Cards fumbling to the Jets while he played awesome, just like I figured he would, while I win the next one in a CIN/KC matchup. Louis and Gats, Woodshed, Jimsocks show up. Truly great to meet Gats. Solid dude, and extremely polite. Upset I didn't get a chance to play him, really wish I did. And also Woodshed and Jim, I ended up playing Woodshed twice I think? Winning at least one, and splitting with Louis after winning the first, I call a Seattle/NE where I get some flak for calling garbage haha.  My memory becomes cloudy at this point, but I know Diaz, Kevin Cabarello, and Ryan Stewart show up. I introduce myself, instantly knowing who Diaz and Kevin were. Can't miss Diaz with the beard. I'm at a break at this point, and eventually Manyo and I head down to Badger Bowl, where we check in, and meet up with some more Tecmoers. Introduced myself to a lot of people I've gotten to know over the past year and was a truly awesome weekend - Knobbe, Matt and Joey Vogt (met Chris last year) Derek, Mort, Dotdon, Hake, Kweh, Hoigaard, the Tecmo Ninja, as well as Chet and Josh, Daboy... I get a Spotted Cow, and Josh and I play a tune-up game, which was sweet, because I didn't get a chance to play him at Tundra Bowl (damn you, Rico). I play as the Vikings against the Lions, and go to OT where he beats me 20-14. Was a really, really good game! We have a few beers and meet people for a while and eventually head back to the hotel, where more Tecmo was in store. The #315 crew..(kinda neat that its 513 backwards, by the way..) head down sporadically in between their tourney games where I play Chris Vogt and catch up with him. Kamp shows up with Odell and Toolie, and that was an awesome moment, finally seeing him in person after many many chats. Late night pizza was in order while more games are played, and I call it a night after eating, just chilling, talking with everyone.

Saturday morning rolls around, and meet up with some more people - Sega, Moulds, Luke Carlberg, Gamehigh, Kyle and Matt Miller, Rico, Troy Hansen, and others, after the opening ceremonies, I find out I got the 1 seed in my group. Wasn't expecting that, but I'll take it. First group play game my opponent Tommy calls CLE-GB, I roll with the Browns. QB Browns and Mack go into Good in the 2nd and stay there all game, I won 42-3. 2nd game I win the toss and call NO/ATL, a matchup Manyo and I played the previous day. I got the Saints, and shut down Jock's Falcons 21-0. I draw Adversity in the final, an opponent I am very familiar with. He calls MIN-MIA. Oof, 2 teams i really like. I said I'll defer. I ended up getting Miami, and after trading scores and him up 14-7 2nd quarter, a Marino INT leads to a 21-7 lead. I get ball and play great D to force OT, where I get the ball and Scott Mitchell of all people leads MIA to a comeback win. At this point, I'm just nuts, because I have achieved what I set out to do - make the 64 man bracket.

My first opponent is Ed Grams, or Edisaurusrex if you prefer. He calls a CHI-PHI matchup, where I watched Manyo defeat a guy in group with the Bears, so I figured why not? I roll with the Bears 28-3, Ed was a super nice guy too, and Orenga's posse was right next to both of us, which was loud. My next matchup is against the legendary Bruddog. Ouch. I also find out that this game will be on the stream too. Talk about pressure. He calls a MIN-WAS matchup, and I take the Vikings. We played a back and forth game, where I got a few breaks, such as an early fumble recovery for a TD, and him overthrowing WRs in the end zone. At one point I'm up 17-7..think 4th quarter. Brud scores and immediately I launch a bomb to AC for a TD. He scores again, but takes time off, and I get the onside and run it out. Was a truly excellent game! Now, onto the sweet 16, where I find out I have to play Orenga. Manyo watched this one, due to Tony knocking him out 2 rounds earlier...told me don't give him the Rams..I call the same matchup I just won with, MIN-WAS, and again get behind the Vikes. Orenga drops a monster JJ right away. I hit one myself, while he hits another before half time. Gannon comes in, and throws 2 picks in the 2nd half, but the Viking D steps up, only allowing 7 more points, while Gannon and Herschel lead the Vikings to a tie. In OT, I get the ball, and drive down behind Herschel, and score. At this point I'm beside myself, making the Elite 8! Never did I think I'd make it this far with a field this talented. To Tony and the posse, that was truly an amazing experience playing that day, one I'll never forget.

I play skunker in the Elite 8 in a PIT-DAL matchup, and lose 17-10 in another really good game! Babe to Nova, triple covered is all I'll say. :) Really, James played great, kept me off balanced on my play calling, and picked off Strom once, that was the play that won him the game. It was really great to meet him, especially him coming from Neenah/Madison. Onto my next game against Matt Vogt - elimination game. I've never beaten him in our 3 or 4 times we've played, but I felt I had a call that would work. Too bad he wins the toss and calls DEN/TB. I take TB and lose in a nailbiter 24-21. Wished Matt good luck, and finally was able to relax and have a beer and watch the final games. I meet some more people, such as Bontempo. We managed some pictures of HSTL, all the online guys(except Regulator, one of my 2 regrets this weekend, tried to get everyone). afterwards, I got on the live stream, Which was another great experience! Manyo gave me a lot of inspiration for this tourney, whether he knows it or not. Thanks bro!

Mort comes and gets me and Manyo, and we go to the Plaza and the Plaza crew is there. Had a few drinks, and had a blast hanging out with everyone while not around Tecmo! We had that weird situation where Blue Luigi appeared, Louis was all over like 6 women...classic! Louis, I am definitely hanging out with you at the bars more often! And Diaz was giving me a hard time by not talking to the two women by us. We hit Perkins afterwards and Manyo has to duck out early, due to his taxi situation. Sunday Odell and Toolie wake Kamp up and we sit and chat for a bit, and we all respectively go our own ways back to our jobs/families. I say goodbye to Diaz, Ryan, and Kevin while doing the Ric Flair styling and profiling strut. I get in my car and drive home. I get to about Beaver Dam (about halfway home), and it sinks in...did I really play THAT well yesterday?

Once again, thanks to everyone I met, talked to, shared a beer or "moment" with, and especially thanks to Chet and Josh, the entire Madison crew, for the spectacular time!! Was a weekend I'll never forget! #134
