NFTGL season X Episode 16

Dime generally gives the best pass coverage. In the early days of the NFTGL everyone played dime exclusively. Eventually, I started running goal line exclusively with New Orleans.

As time when on I also introduced what I called "The Hybrid" which I would run when Eric Allen got injured. The LBs and DBs outside of Eric Allen on New Orleans are terrible. What I would do was call goal line and audible to dime which would send a DL (Wayne Martin) to the MLB spot in dime... and I would use him as a LB.

For the most part the NFTGL was still (until recently) running goal line or dime.

Since then people have started running various other defensive formations. Carolina now runs Normal but audibles into Dime or Goal Line generally. Chicago either runs goal line (if Mark Carrier is injured) or Dime, but will occasionally call Nickel depending on matchups.

Basically what I've found is that different groups run different formations and styles. In the NFTGL most coaches like using a player in the DB slot, even if it's a LB, so they'll audible in some way to move the defensive players around. One of our coaches plays dime exclusively with the LB and plays extremely aggresively (Atlanta) and you can see the effectiveness of that style in his videos. It's kind of sick,

After playing in the TLL i've encountered a completely different play style though, where most of the guys run Nickel or Normal and use LBs almost exclusively.

In a nutshell, the audibles are used to 'maximize' player effectiveness in the eyes of each coach. If you watch my New Orleans games, you'll see me playing different variations of defense in every quarter now based on personnel. (I no longer have Eric Allen, the computer stole him from me and gave me CB Eagles... it still hurts to think about).. so I player normal, nickel and goal line, and audible either into Nickel or Goal Line.

It's a competitive league. Generally, the teams that win more are rooted against more. So you'll see Tampa Bay and New Orleans (the two winningest franchises in the league) are always rooted against the most, followed by Carolina.

The league as a whole loves watching underdogs win games and we root and cheer them on. Especially the biggest underdog of them all, the computer.
