Are you loading everything via ajax?

Page loads, I mean. It seems as if you're using a single page solution. I only looked on my iPhone, so I couldn't tell for sure. If so, I wondered why. If not, then carry on.

Yeah, I loaded it up on my desktop machine and saw it was running normally. Carry on, nothing to see here but a nerd interested in the technology behind the scenes

Thats ok because until you asked, I did not know what Ajax was, nor did I know that I was using a single-page solution.

You're actually not using a single page solution, on my phone it was happening so fast I wasn't seeing the postback happen. I was impressed you were trying new technologies...not since you're not, I remain unimpressed.
Kidding, of course. I think it's great that guys like you and TDO can do what you can having no programming background...

I had some programming knowledge from junior high using BASIC on an Apple IIe but that was about it.
When I first started running a league in 2008 I hadn't even heard of php and had just learned how to make a web page in word. TDO put one of partyman's stat pages with the sql database for me to use, and I ran with it. Initially I asked an IT guy from work for help when I got stuck but mostly I just learned by doing it myself.
My code is still pretty sloppy compared to real programmers but I'm getting there!

Yeah, you learn sooner or later to abstract your stuff to classes and write for reuse, and also to separate your front-end from your business logic...every PHP programmer starts off writing shit like:
You are logged in as:
// Hey mr. hacker, please use sql injection to get some important info out of my user table!!
print mysql_fetch_assoc("select name from user where userid = $userId");
?>
And ends up writing
$userModel = new userModel();
$name = userModel->getUser($userId);
$template->setVariable('name', $name);
?>
--------Template-----------
It's an evolution. Keep up the good work man...

This might be one of my bests:
if ($commish != 1){
die ("access denied");
}
if ($commish != 1){
die ("access denied");
}

I see nothing wrong with the above. Here's the django template equivalent that is in production on my site. *starts sweating*
{% if myteam.iscommish == 'Y' %}
<tr>
<td colspan=5>Administrate your league</td>
</tr>
{% endif %}

There's not really anything WRONG per se...though it really depends on where you're setting $commish...rather, how you're setting it.
I think the funnier thing is that instead of failing gracefully, he just die's the script...

true, I do see a little too much of php developers putting too much business logic in the display layer.
I did get a kick out of the die() in the if and especially if that's in his template. Fortunately in python/django by the time information is passed back to the template it'll either fail silently or it wont have much damage on the application.
ahhh I love being a web developer with shared interests on a tecmo site

I don't like using third party CMS' in general...Wordpress is pretty solid, but in the end, I prefer to write my own stuff. The only third party framework I use is barely a framework, and that's LightVC. It's a View-Controller platform that lets you write your own model. Think of it as CodeIgniter without the bloat. It's so damn lightweight, I don't feel the slightest bit dirty using it.
http://lightvc.org/
I code professionally in .NET, though been doing some PHP stuff as of late for one of our clients, and it's been fun. I started off doing PHP early in my career, but there are more, higher paying jobs in .NET in my area, so that's what I do. PHP is still my first love, though...it's come such a long way and you can't argue with its performance.

Well yeah, of course. Most MVC frameworks in general are based on OOP...

i'm pretty sure M (model) in MVC implies that there is some sort of object / data relation map somewhere in there.
Not to totally nerd up this nerd fest but just thought i'd bring it up.
Now... how many little "tools" your web framework gives you to use OOP in all aspects (class based views) out of the box is going to dictate your choice i'm sure. It's been stated before but django is pretty sweet right away and it's built for imo the best programming language of alllll time

Model just means its a model of your data...doesn't have to be an object, but usually it is...

Ah some fun little discussions which are over my head and out of my league (literally
)
I set a cookie when someone logs in. If the cookie queries back to the league owners/users table and determines it's me or to whomsoever else I give powers, then $commish gets set to 1 and the page lives instead of dies.
