Take that, Cowboys!

I finally did something I've wanted to do for a long time - shut out the Cowboys in a DEF Only challenge. 26-0.

I am using the Cardinals and beefed up their defensive backfield. I use Seth Joyner and dime defense exclusively.

Their stats:

182 total yards

125 rush - 57 pass

8 1st downs

Troy Aikman - 15% completion percentage

Emmitt Smith - 86 yds on 32 carries or 2.69 yds a carry

Five sacks, 2 FF, and 2 INT

Technically, you did NOT do it IF you "beefed up" anything! If you altered the players' ratings to your advantage then it's tainted... says the Cowboys fan and Tecmo purist. It's like people saying they went undefeated and only reset the game a couple of times?!! It's ridiculous. :D

By "beefed up" I mean that I played the free agent market. I did not jack up anyone's stats and I play on a cart.

And notice that I said it was a defense only challenge. I was not allowed to play offense or advance the ball on special teams.

I hope that makes you feel better.

emmitt and barry are insane in that game when they move into good/excellent. They can literally turn into the Tasmanian Devil and spin move through your helpless defenders

Lawd have mercy the Cowboys on this cart... :D

Great job. Nice to see them thrown down. Especially by a team has lackluster as the Cards. For the ultimate defensive test i think you should try to beat them with the Jets.

Hmmm, got an idea...

Just got done playing a DEF Only season with the Giants and beat Dallas in the first game 14-7 despite DAL having zero turnovers.  It always helps to play the stud teams in the first game when they all start out in average condition.  I held Emmitt to 87 yds rush on 35 attempts.

The second game didn't go quite as well.  I was down 14-13 with under a minute left in the game when I stuffed Moose Johnston up the middle.  He fumbled and I suddenly had visions of running it back for a TD or just running it into FG position and stepping out of bounds to stop the clock.  Instead, Emmitt picks it up and smokes a crack rock all the way to the house.  If I had been ahead at that point there would have been some Tecmo RAGE!

I need to get you playing online man...

I've never played the defense only challenge as i'm always looking to test out pass and run plays on offense... but it sounds like a lot of fun.

What are the basic rules you use for defense only challenge?

You may not advance the ball on offense.  Once you get the ball you must either punt or kick a FG.  You may not advance the ball on kickoff or punt returns.  You may not reset the play call to get COM to use the other playbook.  I think that's about it.  I play with fumbles, no injuries, and 5 min quarters.

Yeah, fair catch every time - or down it in the end zone.  On rare occasion your returner catches the ball straddling the goal line.  In those instances you can't fair catch and you can't down it.  So I just dive forward.

It had been awhile since I'd beaten Dallas in a DEF Only Challenge, so I was looking forward to facing them in a season with the fantastic Redskins D.  I got off to a hot start with a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.  The highlight was my DBs triple-teaming Emmitt out in the flat (which is usually alarming!).  But Troy chucked it over there anyway, Stanley Richard picked it off, Emmitt went splat, and Richard trotted in from 47 yards out.

Ken Harvey never got excellent, but neither did Emmitt.  One thing that drove me crazy is that Kevin Williams caught every-fucking-thing.  He might be the most over-attributed player in TSBIII.  No way should they have made him that good.

With 50 seconds left in the game I was up 16-6, but Aikman hit KW for the TD.  Then they converted the 2-pt conversion to get within two.  They onsides kicked it and recovered.  I wasn't scared until I saw KW running free on the first play from scrimmage.  Troy hit him for a big gainer to get them in FG range.  Emmitt ran a draw, which I easily sniffed out, but it put the ball right between the hash marks with under 30 seconds.  They go for the FG and I'm sweating it.  But they run a fake!  LOLOL

Problem?  Yep.  They maintain possession with just under ten seconds.  They try to select another FG attempt, and I say, "the fuck you will!"  I kinda sorta cheat and keep selecting CHANGE from the drop down menu to run the clock to zeroes.

FUCK YOU DALLAS - I WIN!   HAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA

Ugh - Dallas reamed me in the second matchup 24-7.  Only bright spot was a sweet INT return by Darrell Green.

The worst part was that through 12 games I'd held teams to 214 total rush yards.  In this one game Emmitt and Moose both went over 100 for 254 rush yards.  And that little fucker Kevin Williams caught all five targets in coverage.

HA!  Beat them again!

My best record with Green Bay is 12-4, so I was hoping to improve on that.  Going up against Dallas I didn't have much hope.

But early in the game I blocked a punt and then tackled the punter to set up a pair of field goals.  Dallas came back and missed a FG then made a FG for a 6-3 game at half.

In the 3rd quarter disaster struck - Kevin Williams made a STOOPID 62-yd punt return down to the 2 and then Emmitt put it in to give them the 10-6 lead.  I tackled the punter in the end zone for a safety to make it a two-point game, then got another punt block to set up another FG giving me the 11-10 lead.  In the 4th I tack on another FG and it stays that way for the 14-10 victory.

Michael Irvin caught everything in sight, but on four occasions Kevin Williams couldn't catch the ball in single coverage.  That saved my ass.  Novacek and Johnston also came up empty on passes in traffic about five times or so.  Also, Dallas called the easiest runs to defend as Emmitt had just 71 yds on 30 carries.  I didn't get any turnovers, but those punt blocks were a godsend.

Hopefully my season holds up!  I think I still have a couple really tough matchups left including the Niners.

The most common way to score in DEF Only Challenges is in the punting game.  Tackling the punter in FG range is the most common.  My guess is that I tackled their punter, blocked their punt, or they stupidly faked a punt in FG range.

I actually had 13 points, so I'm guessing three field goals and two safeties.  Had I scored a TD it would likely have been via turnover, you're right.

I usually average about 2-3 blocked punts for TD a season.  Blocked FG for TD are extremely rare.  I think I've only done it three times ever.

Nice. I need to do a full season defense only challenge. I get like 6 games in and get bored, lol.

If you get bored then don't do it!  I'm the opposite.  Regularly beating teams 70-0 using offense is not my idea of fun.  There is no challenge and no thrill.  You can pretty much do anything you want if you try.  Want Pat Chaffey to lead the NFL in rushing?  Just keep calling his number.  Want Jeff Cothran to lead the NFL in rushing and receptions?  No problem.

I dont do that on offense.  I will fine tune plays in my play book for the NFTGL Vikings.  I am always trying new angles on my plays whether its a quick throw, or testing timing on routes.  I need as much practice with that for the upcoming NFTGL XI season as I do on defense, so Ill sometimes do 15 minutes quarters and work on both.

Just finished a DEF Only season with the Iggles.  Went 15-1 including a season sweep of Dallas.  My one loss was to Denver.  Elway smoked my ass for 75% completions.  Rocked my fucking world all game long.

Anyway, I took a break after the Denver loss, so I can't recall how my first victory went.  But in the second game I went out to a chunky 13-0 lead after the 1st quarter thanks to a Byron Evans strip-sack fumble return on my bitch, Troy Aikman.

Emmitt was in either Good or Excellent a couple of times, but he never really broke loose.  The daggers came when my guys would leave Kevin Fucking Williams wide open.  I was clinging to a 16-14 lead early in the 4th when Aikman hit Irvin for a big first down in coverage.  I blew it by missing the gap on the sack attempt.  A few plays later Dallas was down to the 4, but I called the Emmitt run play two consecutive times.  Emmitt didn't give a shit, he just LOL'd into the end zone.

Somewhere in there I got a safety, and after tackling their punter I hit a FG to make it 23-21.  Finally, a big break.  Kevin Williams fumbled the punt return and Jeff Wilkins picked it up and took it in, with a spin move, even.  Emmitt finished with 57 yards on 32 carries.

Always fun to beat Dallas.
