Last year I was about 15% away from making an updated version of the original TSB game, using Cx_ROM's 32-Team version. I had completely changed the graphics of the game (including movie intro et al). I'm looking to finish the version of the game I was working on, and was wondering who would be interested to help out, if anyone? I'm going to eventually write some details as to the point of the ROM, as I see it (open for expansion, of course)--but it's original intention was to simply clean-up some aspects of the original gameplay, and update them.

Anyone who is familiar with my old ROMs knows I'm detail-oriented. This ROM isn't meant to be as much as a pain in the ass as those other versions.

A while ago I posted wanting to do a big, group effort. After a great deal of thought, with so many 'chefs in the kitchen,' I don't think that idea was plausible. Let me know if you're interested to help, and what you'd like to do (with prerequisite knowledge in-tow)! Give me a general range of your interest.

I can do many jobs like beta tester, playbook assistant producer, idea guy, yes man, but nothing truly helpful.
Just think of me as the Brick Tamland of the team!

People would be surprised how helpful they can be if they're open and willing to take direction. I will count you in on the team, FC, as I organize myself.

I'm throwing together Offensive Lines. Not sure how helpful that would be.

How modded will this be? If this is fairly unmodded/traditionally rated rom, I'd be interested in helping/making it the "TecmoBowl.org Official Rom"

Grapple hack is a must!
What other hacks are you putting in?

I'd be interested in a clearer explanation of "clean up original gameplay." That's pretty open-ended. Are you just going to fix things that are "wrong" with the ROM, as in return speed, PC/PA, conditions fix, scores at each quarter, etc? Or, does that include grapple hack, remove JJs, etc.

You'll never please everyone, but if you're looking for something like how the original game should have looked had it gone through another round of rigid testing, that might be a start...

Hell, you might be giving people a new base ROM to start with in the process...

I'm glad people are engaged. I'll pull out my ROM from last year and denote every change I've made (or others) to CX_ROM's 32-Team ROM. We'll see what we all like and what we don't. We'll debate it some. Delegate some projects. And then we'll get to some work. :)

Sound good?

See, I'd be completely against removing defensive diving. I wouldn't consider that something that was "broken" in the original game.

I like the original form too much to want to change it up drastically. Otherwise, we're just creating another edit of a ROM. I think the focus of this project should be a clean, base ROM with some minor alterations. Then again, what do I know, I don't even really like the TSB as much as TSB1 or TB...

Quick Answers:

- I've played the game without Defensive diving and I've found it to be very cool (for lack of a better term) in balancing out some mechanics of the game. But, again, I agree with TT that defensive diving is something that anyone who has played and loved TSB has accepted long ago. Changing it might not be the best idea, regardless of if it changes the mechanics of play from a pass/rush perspective that benefits balancing out the game. This is the kind of shit I'm talking about when it comes to debating the finer points. I highly encourage everyone who wants to input their thoughts to play the various hacks out there and refresh yourself about the benefits and doubts.

- I agree with TT entirely. I'm not looking to change the game much. My 'custom defenses' of yesteryear will not be making the cut for this game. Not the intention. What I'd likely do is continue changing up how the natural defensive reactions play out when selecting a specific play. Fixing it, for instance, to provide the better pass coverage when picking a pass play, or visa versa for the runs. Subtle changes to clean up the programming selection of defensive reactions.

My general rule is if you play the game with someone who knows nothing about hacking, will it more or less be the same game? The HP hack is one that comes to mind...the only ones you couldn't fool with that hack are super tappers...they'd be like "I've never lost a tapping battle!" I'm not sure how I feel about that hack. I'd almost opt for not including it and then let anyone else include it if they want...

I prefer the No Diving hack, but agree that it shouldn't be included.

Hacks I would include
PA/PC
Grapple
Player 2 conditions (for man vs man)

Others up for debate
Conditions change every play (not sure why, but I love this one)
Quickness for INT/FR
KR & PR use their own MS.
COM QB throws quicker (for man vs com)

I totally agree with TT again. Part of me thinks that the HP hack should only be a slight boost. In its current state, it's pretty cut and dry. Black and White. You have more HP, you win. I'm thinking of subtly upping it. Giving a small boost to HP, but not clear-cut making a higher count win. See what I mean?

Subtle changes.

RE: Bodom. Thanks for the post. That's the kind of cut-and-dry listing of hacks I'm looking to debate. Let's just get to the core of the matter. We could easily figure out what we want and don't want (using polls or whatever) pretty easily, I think. I have 85% of the fucken graphics of the game already changed.

This thing could be out there as soon as the draft is over if we make it so.

I agree with your inclusions (save for grapple):
PA/PC
Player 2 conditions (for man vs man)

But I would add as must haves:
Stats after every quarter
Quickness for INT/FR
KR & PR use their own MS.

As for the ones remaining in your up for debate, I'd argue that "com throws quicker" and conditions change every play might be ones to leave up to the editor of a custom release...

Love the debating. I want more. From more people! But, this is how it's done, gents. Good on us. We'll make a collaborative ROM if it fucken kills me.

Instead of throws quicker, how about just updating the QBs willingness to run out of the pocket / ability to take a sack. I think TT is right, making them 'throw faster' will change the plays. But making them avoid sacks / rushing out of the pocket more will, I believe, enhance the plays that should happen.

In terms of fixing tecmo errors:

1. The passing ability/ pass control hack
2. Fixing player 2 conditions

are probably the only real ones that should be applied. I'm not entirely sure the KR/PR thing was an error.

I only like the KR/PR MS hack if there are dedicated kick and punt returners. Otherwise people just put in the fastest person and it defeats the point and teams lose some of their identity. Obviously a punt returner has about zero impact in Tecmo. Even over a large number of games.

Don't need stats after EVERY quarter. At halftime seems like enough but even that is not a big deal.

TOP hacks:
1. INT return hack - this is one of my personal favorites given how many other big plays you can have in tecmo. I never understood why returning an interception more than 10 yards was like a feat of god.
2. HP hack- Of course I'm biased and like my version of the HP hack which is random+HP+ about 10% tapping. It's just my own opinion that button mashing being important is kind of silly for a sports game.
3. QB's fumble more- This at least increases the penalty for incessant qb scrambling and taking sacks somewhat. Honestly the ease with which qbs can scramble over and over and not get injured and rarely fumble is one of the dumbest things about the game. Qb's FUMBLE a lot on sacks in the nfl. One out of every 5 sacks results in a fumble in the NFL vs like 1 in 20 for tecmo. LOL
