Grogan passing season

Starting a season vs. COM and trying something out. Every offensive play must be a Grogan pass. Here's the rules I'm using.

Default playbook, runs never used.

Grogan must be in at QB, and he must pass the ball every time. No runs. No deliberate sacks taken (though he's so slow and it's confusing to decide which stopped and covered reciever

you want to throw the interception to that it happens). Not sure what to do if there's an injury.... probably play out the game with Wilson then reset the next game till Grogan comes back. Maybe even reset upon injury. That pass 1 is an insta-sack so he's probably gonna get hurt as some point.

Defense is played as normal, except on fumbles or interceptions you can't return them.

Punts and kickoffs are run OOB, but you're allowed to take it out to the 20 yard line if you can.

No punting and no field goals.

Of course through the first 4 games I'm killing them still, but I have already thrown 5 interceptions and am only completing 58% of his passes. I have a feeling this is going to be extremely frustrating later on.

HOW bout if grogan gets hurt....you must always punt the ball and/or kick FGs, make your defense win those games until grogan is healed! :D

Because later in the season when all your recievers are covered, using fgs and defense to win would be much easier

Though it's been a while since I played COM on original rom, I'm going at this challenge.

Default NE Playbook.

No QB runs.

No punts, no FG, no runbacks of any kind (well, maybe to 20 on kickoffs).

Pretty much how you're doing it, Tupa.

I'm 4-0 so far:

week 1 (colts)
28-13
44% 226 4/1
fryar 3/113

week 2 (browns)
30-10
64% 313 4/2
fryar 6/203

week 3 (steelers)
28-14
58% 371 4/1
fryar 6/187

week 4 (oilers)
28-24 (down 24-7 at half)
41% 310 4/0
dykes 3/166 (all jj TDs)

The first game was weird, I could of done better. The last game against the oilers, COM juice must of kicked in. I was down 24-7 at the half. Hart-Lee-Dykes pulls in 3 50+ yd JJ TDs...Grogan gets the victory.

Total after 4 games:

43/83, 16 TD, 4 INT, 1220 yds, 150.6 rating

You have open guys until you are about +7 win/loss. I'm 9-2 right now, just got handled easily by the Jets after throwing 4 INT. Also lost to Buffalo week 10, Darryl Talley got all cracked out on a fumble return really hurt on that one. It's so hilarious the rainbow jjs to Fryar, and the bonks on the head of short recievers. Then there's the wide open streaking recievers that Grogan decides throwing 10 yards behind them into the middle of the field would be a better idea. Man Clifton really killed me, I think he had 3 int but for sure 2. The last one he intercepted my deep bomb to Marv... he was covering the stinkin' top reciever??

I got through 2 games last night. Upped the rom speed a bit...and I'm using my laptop keyboard, not a controller, which makes things a little more difficult.

Went 2-0 (won by only 7 each game). 28-21. 28-21.

Grogan: 31 for 70, 754 yards, 8 TD, 3 INT.

On two consecutive plays, he overthrew Cook and Dykes. Overthrew a wide open Cook on a post pattern by 10 yards, then followed it up by overthrowing Dykes by literally 30 yards. I knew he was bad, but c'mon......

Seriously, maybe it's happened... I'm sure I would've remembered. But c'mon, I just got shut out vs. the comp. I was inside the 10 a couple times but when you can't even jj and they're all covered you're just screwed. I don't think I've been shut out even on a juiced rom. I was really sure I'd be able to get a bye till now.

well, I've lost a lot of sleep and etc, but I'm 12-1 (got shut out by the jets 0-14), and just clinched the division.

after 13 games, here's Grogan:

3900 yds, 47 TD, 18 INT, 175/306 = 57.1%, 12.7 avg, 129.5 rating

allen 5 td

stephens 7 td

fryar 17 td

dykes 12 td

comments: lippett aint bad. original TSB vs COM is easy as fuck.

I wish I had that 1st Jets game back - I kicked their ass the 2nd time.

Grogan never got hurt!

John Stephens was the only player to get hurt all season (he is a fumbling bitch, but a valuable asset to Grogan's 4th down/red-zone passing attack.

Can I win it all???

I finished yesterday but was too tired to write about it. Once again I got to see the other team's Super Bowl rosters on my screen. Unfortunately I played SF in the SB but couldn't pull out the W. I was pretty proud of my first two playoff victories though. I had been playing buck's rom using lbs on defense and getting killed. Then I realized using dbs was the way to go, so when I started playing the comp in this I was being mainly Lippett. My lb heavy defense dominated in the playoffs, even vs. SF, but they just got too dang many field goals because Grogan couldn't complete anything!

Anyways, I went 12-4 and got a first round bye. I sure thought Buffalo beat me twice and finished with the same record, does the game just go by points on tie-breakers? Anywho....

12-4 449 for 243 against

1st in offense 5664 yards (all passing)

1st in defense 2684 yards 1327 pass (1st) 1357 rush (7th)

Grogan finished 9th in passing:

237 of 403 58.8% 14.0 avg 63 tds 24 int 136.9 rating

George Adams for some reason was in excellent a lot and had 12 tds

Fryar had 42 catches for 1045 yards but only 3 tds

Marv Cook did the heavy lifting with 66 catches for 2527 yards (38.2) and 29 tds, he's really the only one fast enough to zig zag away from juiced defenders for scores.

Played the Oilers first and won 23-10

Grogan: 52% 265 yds 2 int

McMurtry had 2 catches for 93 yards, big end of half jj score

Avenged my Bills losses AFC Championship even though I was nervous at the outset. Final score 35-14

Grogan 66% 417 yards 1 int

Marv had 4 catches for 150 yards.

Then my SF matchup. Grogan threw a quick pick and Montana CCed to Rice for a quick score, but the XP was blocked 6-0. Grogan kept throwing ints, Lott and Waymer were really everywhere, and Millen even got me once. They missed their two first half field goals from inside the 20 and the last play of the half I hit Marv for the 80 yard TD for a 7-6 lead. I felt that gave me a chance. I only threw one int in the second half, but Grogan had his worst game of the season at a horrible time.

I started the second half with amazingly only the short guy covered and the line even held for me on a streak to Cook, but Grogan overthrew him by about 40 yards. Hardly ever open, when I did get a good throw off he'd throw it oob, even on jjs. He kept throwing oob low on the bottom jj to Fryar on t-form pass 3. ugh....

Well, with my 3 and outs and a few Rathman runs, the Niners wound up hitting their 3 field goals while I could get nobody to catch a ball when it happened to be inbounds.

SF 15 Pats 7

Grogan 20% for 153 yards and 4 int

Joe Montana 25% 17 yards 0 int

Tom Rathman 8 runs for 104 yards

Passing strategies:

Ok pass 1 is my basic goalline play. If the TE is open, great. If not top and bottom wr are probably screwed, so if rb is covered you wait for him to run then throw. The defender won't int it, but will jump to block the pass instead, allowing the rb to trot in for the score. Problem is he doesn't always take off running. If only one defender is on him you can run into him and throw him then throw to the rb. If you get tackled before you can throw... oh well it would've been an int anyways... :D Also this play is great for long jj bombs, as only the top wr goes deep, so no defenders are able to run up to support like they can on pass 3.

Pass 2 seemed to get the most guys open, but if they're all covered they're static except for the deep wr, so you just have to bomb it if that happens. Middle rb2 is open quite a bit even on max coverage.

Pass 3 is my base jj play. If top wr is open, you better have a long field because unless he runs way past where your rb is running deep the defenders will recover in plenty of time to cover him. Not as bad on that rb, if he's open you can usually hit him when he gets about halfway down the screen. If they're covered and short rb option is also covered then you hit your bottom jj wr.

Pass 4 I don't like, so I don't use it. I really need to learn it I suppose so I can use that run 3 in playbooks sometimes.

that's crazy that you threw for 900 more yards than me. only 5 more TDs though. and my NE def only gave up 10.88 ppg to your 15.1 ppg.

anyways,

I won the motherfucking superbowl vs SF. I had to go thru the oilers and raiders (I HATE the raiders DL).

here's the playoff breakdown (hart lee dykes gets a couple game balls):

vs oilers

21-10

grogan 56%, 308, 3 TD, 2 INT

dykes 2/103, 2 TD = ~70 yd JJ TD, ~30 yd diving end-zone TD

stephens 1 short TD

8 first downs

Lippett intercepts Moon in 4th quarter (when game was 14-10).

--------

afc championship

vs raiders

21-7

grogan 52%, 247, 3 TD, 3 INT (2 in 4th quarter)

dykes 3/94, 3 TD

2nd quarter defense: jackson fumble, lippett interception

dykes: diving TD first drive, jj TD 2nd quarter, jj TD 3rd quarter

raiders don't score until last minute of game

---------

super bowl

vs 49ers

for some reason they ran the ball a lot. they kicked two FGs on me. grogan was in EXCELLENT. see screenshot below.

---------

after completing this challenge (although I lost one game), where else is there to go? ricky proehl reverse only?

It's funny that Tecmo made a 'face' (and a damn fine likeness) just for Grogan - the shittiest QB on the game.

That card is 89 Topps?

I have no idea, actually. Just pulled it from google images. I thought it was funny that it matched the tecmo face to a T.

My grogan passing season.

Record 13-3

Blowout loss to Oilers. Got CC'd to death and groan threw 3 picks.

Last second loss to Bills. CC in endzone to win it.

Last second loss to Jets. CC in endzone to win it. 10-9 Grogan throw 3 picks.

PF 464 (29)

PA 134 (8.37)

TEAM DEFENSE:

#1 TOTAL 2477

#1 PASS 1362

#2 RUSH 1115  Lost by 6 yards to saints. Gave up too many garbage runs late where i didn't care.

Grogan:

206-383 53.7% 5190yds (13.5) 64TD's (16.7%) 27INTs (7%)

Fryar

56-2195 (39.1) 30TD

Dykes

27-948 (35.1) 7TD

Stephens

44-701 (15.9) 9 TD

Cook

Allen

27-330 (12.2) 5TD

Adams

15-230 (15.3) 1td

Tatupu

13-159 (12.2) 2td

Pass 2 and 3 seemed to be the best plays although the number of times grogan overthrew dykes on the pass 2 play was obscene. Pass 4 can work if you try timing route passes bu that's pretty dangerous with grogan. Pass 1 is always worrisome because of the autosack.

Fryar 5-279 4TDs

Kreig 33% 110 1 int

Rd 2 Raider with excellent BO, good schroedy, excellent long, good allen, good anderson....UH-OH

Stuffed bo early almost o the point of safety. Was calling the run 2 sweep all game long. For good reason. I was

right in guessing my lb would be too slow for the run through the tackles stop. the one time i didn't call it and tried to

that i could never catch up with bo.

Still Grogan made things interesting early with long and most of the Raiders DL all in my grill grogan was spraying everywhere. Still I hold Raiders to FG after turnover on downs. Grogan to Frya got their mojo working and put the game in hand. Forget to call bo run and its 21-10 whoops. Then i make a gaff and LB jump ints my pass. UH-OH. Hold to another FG and its 21-13. good drive capped off by a montanaesque pass to Cook in the back of the endzone slant with two defenders diving. Allen rips off an 70 yarder as i make a mistake in run coverage.

Final 35-20

Amazingly I darw the DEadskins in the final as the blowout the 49ers

Game was a little to close at times. 21-14 at one point but I held on defense and then threw a beautiful pass 4 jj to fryar to put me up 28-14.

Rypien did dick except spring clark on the wr reverse. Forgot qb comes to help block. Deadskins rushed 13 186 again mostly on a few long carries.

Completed this a few weeks ago, but my post got wiped when the board went down.

Went 13-2-1 in the regular season. First round bye. Lost to the Jets twice. Tied with the Oilers. Beat the Bills when I was down by 2 scores with 50 seconds left.

Grogan: 210-415, 4903 yards, 54 TDs, 26 INTs

Fryar: 50-2067, 24 TDs

Stephens: 52-844, 8 TDs

Tatupu: 41-554, 4 TDs

McMurty: 15-462, 4 TDs

Adams: 21-285, 5 TDs

Cook: 9-227, 2 TDs

Allen: 15-222, 4 TDs

Martin: 5-206, 2 TDs

Dykes: 2-36, 1 TD (was in bad for about 14 weeks)

Sievers: absolutely nothing (played maybe 2 games)

1st playoff game vs. Kansas City... Grogan's first pass of the game is an interception. Lowery went 1/3 in the first half, keeping the score close at 7-10. Okoye scored to open the third quater, but Grogan-McMurty hit right back with a cross field, back of the endzone pass, 2 defensive players diving but unable to make a play. McMurty scored again on a JJ in the 4th, giving me a 21-17 lead with 2 minutes left. KC drive down the field and get to my 25. A pass into the endzone that I assume will be a covered catch is... JUST too long. Pats win. Grogan has 243 yards, 50%, 3 TDs and an interception. McMurty is the hero with 3 catches for 103 yards, 2 TDs.

2nd playoff game vs. Houston... the uncoverable Jeffries scores early, then I get picked off in the redzone on 4th down with everyone covered. Turns into a tactical int, as I get a playpick safety the next play. 2-7 Houston. Then one of those crazy plays, that even after hundreds of Tecmo game still surprises you. I'm at about my own 20. I get playpicked on pass 2, and I try to dump it off into the flat, a play which is always either a complete pass to the RB or an incomplete. Well, Ray Childress, one of the blitzing players, jumps up and snatches it away. He takes it in for the score. 2-14 Houston.

Grogan is in bad and really launching moon balls. The WRs have no chance. As time runs out to end the half, I hit Tatupu at about the 10, and he takes it in past three diving defenders. I'm back in the game at 9-14. 2nd half I get picked off straight away, then White scores. McMurty makes a great diving catch on a 4th and 10, and Fryar scores on the next play to make it 16-21. With four minutes to go, Grogan fumbles. Jeffries scores again, double covered in the endzone. 16-28. Going into JJ mode, it's just not happening for Grogan. Game over. Grogan has 275 yards, 51%, 2 TDs and 3 ints. Tatupu was the leading receiver with 7 catches for 98 yards.

Fun!

I just found this challenge a few days ago and thought I'd give it a try. I just finished and thought I would post my results. I have to admit that this was one of the most fun and challenging seasons I have ever played. I went 13-3 and I was in a first place tie with MIA going into the last week. I had to beat Cin in order to get a first round bye or else I was going to have to play as a wildcard. Luckily I beat Cin pretty easily(I refused to throw it to Fulcher) in order to win my division. Here are Grogan's stats for the regular season.

att 378

comp 194

td 63

int 28

int% 13.5%

yds4922

avg 13.0

comp% 51.3 %

rating 123.7

I got lucky and for all but a few quarters Grogan was not in bad condition.

In the second round of the playoffs I drew the Bills, which I beat twice during the regular season and I wound up winning 21-3. I had 50% comp. 250yrds and 2 ints. I was able to rely on my def and pass play 4/2. I was able to hit stephens several times during the game.

In the AFC championship game I played KC. I won 21-10. I was able to shut down their team by picking run2 and using tippet and reynolds whenever they chose run1. The only play that they hurt me on was pass 1 (I couldn't get to the QB in time. I also lucked out because none of their stars where in excellent condition.Grogan's stats: 42%, 295 yds, 2 ints. Dykes came up huge for me because I found I could hit him on the streaks if I moved Grogan to the top of the screen and made him through it downward. I hit him on a few bombs using pass2 that way.

In the Superbowl I had to play the Gia. (they beat Chi in the NFC champ. game). I was glad to play them because I thought I could handle them even though their entire secondary was in good/excellent and Simms was in excellent. I was right. I won 9-7. I got lucky and kept picking run 2 and then either sacked simms or forced the fumble whenever the pass 1/3 were called on the rest I relied on my def to hold. Luckily they picked a lot of pass 1/3. 25% 177yds 5 ints. Two of those were bombs that turned out to be kinda like punts but its tough to pass against an almost maxed out gia. secondary.

Overall I enjoyed this challenge and am looking forward to during a few more of them.

Bringing an old thread back from the dead, but I just finished my own Grogan Challenge and thought I'd post my results. Same rules, all passes, no changes, no kick return/punt return past the 20. Shit got INFURIATING around weeks 10-14.

Finished 13-3 (Lost to NYJ, MINN, and I can't remember the 3rd. Jets kicked my ass late in the season when I was getting overconfident. Vikes got me 10-7 when I threw 5 picks. Kicked the Bills and Dolphins asses both times I faced them.)

I'll need to go back and pull the team offense/defense stats, since I noticed a lot of people posted them here, but here are my player stats:

S. Grogan - 211/448 (47% comp.), 5234 yds, 62 TD, 29 INT

M. Allen - 52 rec, 696 yds, 9 TD

J. Stephens - 59 rec, 798 yds, 11 TD

I. Fryar - 58 rec, 2619 yds, 32 TD

H. Dykes - 21 rec, 639 yds, 7 TD

M. Cook - 21 rec, 482 yds, 3 TD

No injuries, and I rarely used pass 4 (where I assume some of those Receivers are the 3rd and 4th guys I see popping up on these stat lines) so I never ended up throwing a pass to anyone else.

Bout to start the playoffs. This was actually a really fun (if sometimes maddening) challenge. I think my worst game was something like 29% complete percentage and 4 INT. Just overthrew EVERYTHING.
