    I care!! Am I the .5?

I understand completely. Heck, I'm not sure I've ever qualified myself as more than a lucky "participant" (not competitor, not player, etc.) I started studying it out of college boredom and writing nostalgically (word?) about my childhood with it before I realized it was a "thing" and went to check it out. It's probably not the smartest thing to only play Tecmo once a year, and play it at Madison, but I still have a helluva time and am lucky to have rubbed shoulders with some of the names above. I'm generally sore about missing this year after basking in these recaps, just had too many things bumping up too close to each other, but as long as some of the rumors I've heard about aren't true I'll make my triumphant return as 8th seed in Group ## next year!

None of these are the official seeds. I used an SRS (Simple rating System http://www.pro-football-reference.com/blog/?p=37)  method to come up with a power list from tecmo tourney's 8-10. Then based on that and my own subjectivity/personal biases I came up with these seeds

    #1 SEEDS
    Chet H.   (holzy11)
    Jon J      (daboy)
    James T (Skunker)
    Matt V    (Bigmv)

The heavy hitters. Chet is the odds on favorite with no Regulator and is the #1 overall seed. by quite a large margin. The difference between chet and another #1 seed is the same as the difference between a #1 and a #6 seed. Daboys might be one of the best to have not won so I'm looking for a deep run from him this year. He had chet on the ropes in Tecmo 9 and was about 14 minutes fromt he finals when chet returned a kick for a TD right before half that swung the momentum in the game. Matty V like DAboys was one win away from a finals appearance taking down skunker in an EPIC battle before falling to Chet. No shame in that and he's posied for another deep run

    #2 SEEDS
    Jeff B.
    Peter K. (moonwalk)
    Troy H. (PrimeTime)
    joeygats

Jeff B has wins over mort and daboy in his tecmo resume but faltered in the round of 32 last year as Odelle bested him by 14 in  HOU v GIA matchup. It's been a couple tourney's for moonwalk but he had wins over Bontempo and Louis only to fall to Regulator... like most everyone not named Chet have. Troy H had a solid win over Adam (Garbage)  in Tecmo X but also fell to the Tecmo wrecking ball Regulator last year. in the round of 32. Gats was cruising along last year in pool play and played Regulator and Chet tough in some practice games. Hwoever a controller malfunction helped to contribute to a first round exit. A winner of multiple online titles gats wants to get last years bad taste out of his mouth and make a finals run.

    #3 SEEDS
    Francis B. (mort)
    Jim B. (Air Bontempo)
    Josh A. (Coconuts)
    Matt D. (Mattrick Swayze)

Mort going down in the round of 64 was one of last year's stunning surprises. The former champ narrowly lost to an unknown in the round of 64
and struggled in kumite. Can the Mort magic return? Two time champ and always dangerous Bontempo made another deep run last year besting sonofpatbeach and chris vogt before losing to who else...Regulator. My tourney run ended last year to Coconuts in matchup call I wish I could have back. Coco would beat orenga and posse before falling to two of the #1 seeds Skunker and MV in the final 8 double elim. Diaz  rounds out the 3 seeds thanks to a deep Kumite run before falling to Regulator and a deep run in Texmo X before falling to chet.

Had a hard time with seeds 4-8 as I feel they are fairly interchangeable.

    #4 SEEDS
Seth B. (Virtuoso)         - Last tourney was Tecmo IX where he lost to Mort
Matt M. (Ones11fahzu) - Known as REg's bro. Has made some deep runs and is famous for his slow down style

Josh H. (sonofpatbeach)  - Co founder and former champion beat daboy but lost to Bontempo in the round of 16 in Tecmo X

    #5 SEEDS
Eric O. (tecmodell42)       -  The cause of Regulators (X beers deep) only loss between Tecmo X and Kumite
Eric G. (VikingMoe)          - New to Tecmo X last year  made it to the round of 32 before falling to arncoem
Dave B. (bruddog)           - Finally makes the madison trip last year but falls in a tight game to final 8 represnetative Coco
Derek R. (tecmopsycho)  - One of the top tappers but even better tapper chet ended his run last year

Matt O. (LuckyTool)        - A former repeat HSTL champion lost to Mv in the round of 64
Chris V. (vogtcd11)        - Vogt bro number 2.  Trying to repeat last years final 8 run before falling to Bontempo and odelle

    #7 SEEDS
Tony O. (AverageTSBPlayer)  - Owner of the biggest home field advantage at Madison. Run ended with losses to Mort (IX) and coco(X)
Jimmy V. (lillefty)                   - Vogt bro #3 is looking to shake the rust off after an early round exit in Tecmo VII after dominating round robin.
Kevin M. (buzzsaw)               -  Big wins came back in Tecmo VII. Got punded by REg in Tecmo IX and didnt make it out of round robin last year.
Luke C. (Luke C.)                 -  My first practice game on Friday of last year. Solid competitor. Losses to daboy R32 in  IX and Vikingmoe R64

    #8 SEEDS
Louis B. (red98sethuthut)     - Mort's bro Louis who seems to play better live had his run end vs Chris Vogt in the round of 16.
Isaac W. (disastamasta142)  -  4 time Ari. tourney champ and runner up to myself in the L.A tourney is primed for his first madison appearance
Nick G. (Gio)                         - Gio gave me all I could handle in my round robin matchup. With a year of online tecmo under his belt and his tough defense he will be a hard out
Ryan S. (Ryan11p)               - Ryan stepped up his game big time last tourney before falling hard to Arncoem.

(After some more thinking, I thought I'd do a more comprehensive guide to a Madison First Timer. So, this is my advice to the world of rookies)

The Comprehensive Guide to Being a Madison Tecmo Rookie

Hello. If you're reading this, you're likely signed up for Madison Tecmo XI: Apocalipps Now. Congrats. Many of you have played in this grand championship before, but there are plenty who have not. For those who have not, here are bits and pieces of collected wisdom for anybody making their debut. Before we get to the point by point gibberish, this needs to be said-

You're not going to win the tournament.

Seriously man. I know you're good and I respect that. But you're not going to win the tournament.

But, but, but, but... No. You're not going to win the tournament.

I cannot stress this enough. You're not going to win the tournament. On the morning of Tecmo XI, there are probably 225 or so (give or take) of the 256 contests whom you could look in the eyes as they arrive and tell them with a straight face "You have absolutely no shot to win this thing." (And that's not me trash-talking by any stretch. Believe me, I'm very firmly one of those 225 guys on the outside). What I've found in my X number of years in this tourney is that the guys who come in truly believing they'll be crowned champion, despite never having played in Madison (let alone another tourney), tend to be the jerks that everyone remembers. I've always believed that we will never see an unknown or first-timer come in off the street and win this tourney. If you're making your debut and you're psyching yourself up and dreaming of raising the trophy, the faster you get that out of your head, the faster you'll actually enjoy the experience.

"The experience" is the key phrase here. Outside of those 20-30 guys who could conceivably win the tourney, the real draw of Madison is the experience of it. Until you see a swarm of 400+ people surrounding 30+ televisions for 12 hours, you can't yet appreciate the electricity or the IMMENSE PRESSURE of playing in these games (this isn't you and Smitty from college drinking a 12er and playing a 7 game series on a Wednesday. Your heart will be pumping from the moment you arrive). For those of us who can't win, there's a list of 7 "Goals" you should follow on March 7:

    1) Have fun. There are 256 pretty cool guys (give or take who all love playing the same game that have gathered together. Embrace that. Talk to them. Buy someone a drink, chat about strategy, past tournaments, yadda yadda yadda. The most important thing you should take away from Madison when you wake up on Sunday was "Damn, that was a lot of fun."

    2) Pay attention. So, you're a rookie. You're not going to win (have I mentioned that yet?). But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to walk away from the tournament as a better player. When you're not playing, watch other games. Examine the playbooks people use. Keep a vague tally of matchups you see called that make you go "Hmmm, interesting. I may try that one." See how guys hit hot routes on called plays. Watch some of the better defensive players in the tournament and pay attention to who they use on defense and the angles they use to stop plays. If you liked how some guy played and want to emulate their style, wait until some point in the day when you see them not deep in conversation and then introduce yourself. Tell them you admire their play. Pick their brains, ask questions. Don't get clingy (nobody likes a tagalong), but use those 12 hours of Tecmo to take in as much advice (and booze) as possible.

(Notice how the "Goals" haven't yet mentioned anything about your own gameplay?)

    3) Win a game. This should be the base goal of every player in the tourney. Win a game. 25% of the field will go 0-2. If you win a game as a rookie, you should walk away from the day feeling proud, regardless of how the rest of your tourney played out.

    4) Win 2 games. So you won a game. Nice job. Think about what worked for you in that game and what didn't. Make an adjustment and try to win a 2nd game. I mentioned 25% of the field will go 0-2. Important to note that another 25% will go 1-2. That means if you can win 2 games, you finished ahead of 50% of the field. That's nothing to scoff at for a first timer. It's a huge deal, actually. Walk around with your head held high.

    5) Make the bracket. You have to go either 3-0 or 3-1 to make the final 64. Assume that roughly 40-45 of those spots can be written in pen (we all know who they are), so that leaves between 19 and 24 or so spots truly up for grabs. A large bulk of those will be claimed by guys who don't have the capacity to win the whole thing, but have previous Madison experience, so they overcame the intimidation to make the cut. If you can claim one of those last remaining spots as a rookie, you need to be very, very proud of what you accomplished.

If you don't make the bracket, who cares. Stick around and watch the games, make friends, enjoy the atmosphere.

    6) Win your own "Super Bowl." This goal falls under both Pool Play and Bracket Play. The 225 of us who cannot win the entire tournament have to focus on smaller, step-by-step battles. We won't make the championship, but there's a really good chance you are going to play someone who's in that elite category. That's your Super Bowl. That's the big one. If you can knock a big name out, man, who gives a shit if you win it all at that point, ya know? You ruined so-and-so's day! You're a giant killer! A couple years ago I faced off against Chris Vogt in the opening round of 64. I KNEW that was my Super Bowl. I played that game like a motherfucker and came up 4 pts short. But I felt good afterwards (mostly because Chris is a solid human being and that made for a really fun game), because I got a chance to go heads-up with a big name and I took him to the wire.

We all know who some of the big fish are, so no need to name names and start little turf wars about who is "a name" and who isn't. That's not the point. The point is you'll just KNOW when you're about to go up against a monster. That's your Super Bowl. Embrace it.

    7) The last and final goal, Don't be a jerk. Tecmo is a Gentleman's Game. This isn't the Madden Nation tour bus on ESPN from a few years ago where guys swing their dicks in each others' faces after scores. Celebrate properly when something good happens, don't flip out when something bad happens. That's Tecmo. We've all been there. Shake hands after the game and move on. Have fun. Both in playing the game and enjoying the surroundings. In past years, the Herd Mentality of the collective group can tell who the jerks are. Don't be one of them.

Hopefully this all helps and doesn't come off as too preachy. Just know that, as a rookie, the experience and atmosphere is the biggest thing you'll take away from this. I started playing in this tournament many years ago when I was still a Milwaukee/Chicago guy. I've lived in New York for 3 years and have gone back every single year. Not because I think my name can be etched in the Hall of Champions, but because it's fun as hell. Hopefully you'll walk out of the Badger Bowl on Saturday evening feeling the same way.

Like any Tecmo tourney, this is always a test of time and motivation.  Having the tourney in early January allows me to get the place at Barrys for $0 but trying to plan something between Thanksgiving and Christmas is a major boner killer.

Thanks to the Nebraska guys, especially Moulds for helping out with a lot of the equipment, Luke for providing the trophy, and just for showing up as a tourney with no one there would pretty much suck. Typically I'll have some guys say some unprompted nice stuff throughout the day and that really helps with the motivation level as well.

There are some upsides to not hosting 60+ people....the logistics aren't as complicated.

However, I would like to host that type of tournament once.  Next year will be my attempt to do so.  If I announce the tourney in August/September, then you will know I'm serious.

Finally, we raised over $800 for the Husker Greats Foundation. It's a small local charity run by former Husker athletes and barely any of the money goes to overhead.  It also is what I consider to be Tecmo related.

For those who have to go through the significant other, and a rigorous conversation, in order to gain access to this trip we all call "Tecmo Heaven," I have a strategic, yet probable, way of convincing them to give you the green light. I've been fortunate to be a part of the last three Madison tournaments, despite my daughter's actual birthday being March 9.  She turns 5 the Monday after Tecmo XI.

Mind you, this is in the car during a trip with my mom, my fiance, my fiance's niece and my 4-year-old daughter this past Saturday to see Santa Claus at a local mall. Also mind you, I hadn't officially asked for the green light ... yet.

Me: "Mom, did you know it is Tecmo Super Bowl's 23rd birthday today?"

Mom: "No way?! Are you serious? That means you're getting old. It came out that long ago?"

Me: "Yeah. Hard to believe, huh?"

Mom: "When is the Madison tournament? Are you going to go again?"

Me, looking at my fiance: "It's March 7 this year. They are having another tournament. I'm pretty excited."

Fiance, looking at me (and I know it's about to get serious): "Jenna's birthday is the Monday after."

Me: "That would be perfect. We can have her birthday party on Sunday, March 1. She'd love to get her presents early. She's still young, and she still may not know the true difference of when her birthday party is, just as long as it is before her actual birthday if her actual birthday falls on a week day. Which in this case, it does."

Fiance: "I just don't know how long we can keep having her birthday party that far away from her actual birthday."

Me, with a soft tone because others are in the car: "I definitely understand that. I think we can work out the best of both worlds with me enjoying a fun weekend with my brother (Matt), and Jenna getting the 5-year-old birthday experience  early this year. I don't want to miss out on an important brother bonding moment like this being the fact that there's been an ongoing fear of it being the final one."

Fiance: "We can have Jenna's birthday party on March 1."

Have the Tecmo Madison talk with others in the car or in the same room. Odds are, you can control the tempo and conversation. I understand that others have different circumstances. But this is always a hard one for me. But regardless for me, a fourth straight visit, five overall, to Tecmo Madison has been confirmed by the significant other herself.

The Place Beyond the Wasteland (Part 3)

“When I came to you, brothers, I didn’t come with excellence of tapping or of wisdom, proclaiming to you my testimony of the Fontenot of Youth. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. I knew your faith wouldn’t stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of the Tecmo gods. We speak their wisdom in a mystery, the wisdom that has been hidden in the great prairie where the woolly mammoths roam, which the Tecmo gods foreordained before the worlds for our glory.”

    - Skansi’s first letter to the Cornelius, 1200 yrs BLT (Before LT)
    _____

We barreled down the great dirt road at breakneck speed. I learned much of the North Dakota culture, and heard tales of great men like “Onion” and “Smells,” who apparently weren’t the same person. Just at the point where I could smell the second site in Davenport, our caravan was stopped by a crossing train. I saw several Tecmo hobos (“Tecmobos” as the ancients call them) on the boxcars. Hardened men, with their best years behind them, and scores of worse years laid out before them like so many railroad ties, stretching endlessly eastward.

I called out to them that they were passing through fertile Tecmo territory, and they needed to disembark before reaching the Wasteland. But I was speaking to ghosts: their eyes were deader than Mosi Tatupu’s as they lumbered past us. My spirits only recovered when we reached the second site in Davenport: a former deer processing plant. I knew then that one of two things would happen when I entered that building: (1) Our bodies would be butchered, and sold as venison to the starving hordes in the Tecmo refugee camps of the east, or (2) We would enjoy the greatest Tecmo venue we’ve ever seen, and all the mysteries hidden therein.

I walked into the plant with no hesitation, for in my heart I knew the truth. This was the place to which Paul Skansi was referring, all of those ages ago. We entered the holy site to much fanfare, and after drinking a few Nordeast beers, the North Dakota clan immediately screened their brilliant “Is there anybody out there?” and “Designers” documentaries.

Shortly thereafter, we were treated to groundbreaking Tecmo player cards, and a tour of the ancient Tecmo hall of fame, where “the wisdom that has been hidden” had laid undisturbed for centuries. The museum’s artifacts were painstakingly preserved, and when I tried to take a picture of the famous “#EatShitOrenga” towel, I was ushered out by one of the curators who curtly informed me that flash photography was damaging to the precious items inside.

After devouring four Sloppy Ivy Joe’s, I was ready to resume our quest for the Cup. As a strange Wastelander in gym shorts explained the process of baking tasty cakes while eviscerating me in Tecmo, I found myself hoping for many things, but chief among them was that my teammates could vanquish their opponents in the finals singles round. And vanquish they did. Our squad went 7-1 in the final session to finally lay claim to the elusive Tecmo Ryder Cup.

As we took the stage to receive the cup, I found myself thinking of Art Vandelay, “the man who hides behind the corn” in the ancient tongue, and the dangerous trek he took to be there after being abandoned by his lesser, timid tribesmen. I also thought of Team Minnesota captain QB_Browns (“wrong-way rubber of teammates” in colloquial wasteland terms) who left his family alone in the darkness to be there. And I thought of all the other intrepid travelers who joined us that day, against all odds.

It was then that I realized this was much more than a competition for the cup. More importantly, it was a celebration of Tecmo and of life, of history preserved and legacies forged, of mysteries seen and unseen, of the peaceful prairie and the great woods beyond.

    So began the kegstands.

The Place Beyond the Wasteland (Part 2)

“There are two eyes in the human head – the eye of mystery, and the eye of harsh truth – the hidden and the open – the woods eye and the prairie eye. The woods eye looks for closeness, complexity, and darkness; the prairie eye for distance, clarity, and light.”

These words from the late essayist and Tecmo explorer Bill Holm, who perished in the wasteland in 2009, haunted me on my overland journey to North Dakota. Flat prairie land crawled all the way to the horizon in every direction. The familiar trees and hills of my homeland had been devastated by a massive glacier here, millions of years ago. Could such a prairie, on the fringe of unspeakable darkness, be a beacon of light? Could this place, teetering on the edge of madness and calamity, provide clarity? I would have my answers soon enough.

I was retrieved from the airport by Dr. Frolf, who as luck would have it, spoke my language. He was driving some sort of extended buggy that he referred to as a “molester van.” I never did learn which branch of medicine he practiced, but his calm demeanor and friendly smile put me at ease. He provided me with a tour of the city of “Fargo,” the name serving as a literal warning to all that approached: “Go…..Far.…” Indeed we did.

He drove me to a place called Leonard, where the first half of the Ryder Cup would take place. The bulk of the journey was over a primitive dirt road. When I arrived in the remote outpost, I was overjoyed to see my teammates had arrived safely, though I learned later just how harrowing their journey through the wasteland was. The Cup started with videos of far-flung members of the Tecmo tribe, from the turbulent Buffalo lands to Lincoln, and even my own daughter made an appearance. Up to that point, I had assumed these brutes were Tecmo savages only focused on survival. But once I saw the unveiling of the Tecmo flag, as well as the Tecmo playing cards, I began to realize just how sophisticated their culture was.

As tournament play started, the One Who Rolls in Refuse (TOWRIR) struggled mightily. Just then, the tribe presented us with a magic potion known as Yukon Jack, procured via bartering with Canadian barbarians on the hinterlands. Once I drank the potion, my head began to swim, and I began to lose control of my cognitive Tecmo functions. The next few hours, I stumbled through my games in a Kerins-like daze of fear, mediocrity, and grunting. At one point, I saw a wild man drop his pantaloons outside the building to expose a warning message written on his fanny: “Eat Shit Orenga,” it read. He vanished as quickly as he appeared.

Luckily for the team, the Rikster, or “The Bearded Beacon” in the native Tecmo tongue, was able to hold off relentless attacks from our opponents, and keep us in contention. At one point, he summoned the spirit of Andre Waters (learned in this tutorial), who rose from the dead to deliver an INT and fumble recovery TD to Chet ("he who checks down" in the the ancient language).

After this, the North Dakota tribe announced a new “garbage” round, where only the Seahawks, Patriots, and Colts could be used. Were they not aware of TOWRIR and his ability to sustain his Tecmo offense for months on refuse alone?  The North Dakotans appeared to share our taste for garbage Tecmo, but couldn’t wallow in the filth long enough to hang with Madison in this round.

With the standings tight, it was time to take a break, and head to the second site. I hopped in a pickup truck with the natives, who drove me down the great dirt road toward Tecmo immortality.

Because people have been clamoring for them, today will be a bonus card day. Maybe one more later on, too.
