  1. Yeah, it's going to be a fun task. I have pretty good data on all the players except Dave (The Shark) Watski. I didn't see anything on him from the most recent Madison player profile update. If you have some extra data on him, I'll take it along with any other player data you are willing to share. I would like to do a live seeding show, just waiting on filling these last two spots. Also, what is Flo's longest run at Tecmo Madison? Even though I'm high on Flo as a local legend, The Burning Mort crowd didn't seem to respect him as much.
  2. That wouldn't be a problem Hank. Are you guys 100% not able to come? Or do you want until the end of the week to see if you guys can figure it out?
  3. This is going to be a fun format. I knew it wasn't to going to be for everyone hence the 20 player max. I'm glad some of the elite players are taking the challenge. In a year when Tecmo tournaments and enthusiasm is at a all time high, I figured it was worth a shot to do something completely different. My thinking in creating this format was the inclusion of things I like from different sports and leagues: Superior vs Inferior 4 team divisions in the NFL, the NBA Draft Lottery, the NFL / NBA / Fantasy Drafts, and Cinderella teams in the basketball NCAA Tournament (whether it ends up being elite player with mid-lower tier team or good player with high tier team or neither). Also, by keeping it small, all players will have a chance to get on the stream during the live team draft. I'm looking forward to running this tournament and I'm pleased to see the enthusiasm and buy in from the players attending.
  4. This Tournament is proud to be sponsored by both Michael Anthony's Pizza and local video game store, Play it Retro! 3rd and 4th place just got a lot more interesting. Here are the new prizes: 3rd Place -$50 Gift Card, Play it Retro -$20 Gift Certificate, Michael Anthony's Pizza 4th Place -$25 Gift Card, Play it Retro -$20 Gift Certificate, Michael Anthony's Pizza
  5. Change to controller rule: 10. Competitors are allowed to bring their own controller, but it has to be an official Nintendo rectangle controller, official Nintendo dogbone controller, or the official Hyperkin Cadet NES controller. I have become aware that a few players like to use the Nintendo dogbone controller. Since it is an official Nintendo controller and it has no turbo buttons, I have no problem with it. I also added the Hyperkin Cadet NES controller to legal list. It has no turbo buttons, and after using it for a while it is one the best, if not the best 3rd party controller.
  6. Ha ha! Louis, I'm interested in the all-around event for sure and to see a Bills game. I would love to be the all-around champ. I'm not sure the likelyhood of me making it this go around since me and my wife just had a baby in June, but I will at least touch base with her to see if it's a possibility. If I get the ok, I'll also to talk to Mort to see what his plans are in getting there, possible car pool and what not.
  7. TecmoBo, if we can build a Chicago local tournament scene with newer players and you can figure an easy way to calculate the X-factor at a tournament, I would be willing to give it a try in the future. Although as Bruddog said, it may be confusing for newer players. I would say the incentive would have to be higher then just seeding as well. Maybe cash prize for first seed based on record and X-factor. That being said, after putting work into a tier system / guide for newer players, I don't know if a tournament system revolving around newer players is the best idea. The people that play in these tournaments have to first have desire to play, then willingness to put in effort to get better, and lastly a belief they have a chance at winning or placing in a tournament. What I have seen here in Chicago is players at least have some nostalgia for the game and desire to play, but aren't ready to put in effort to get better, and don't believe they have a chance at winning or placing in a tournament. Maybe if we can get a local circuit going at different bars for casual play, we can work at helping players improve and hype up tournaments like Madison, Tundra Bowl, and whatever tournaments we do here. An event like this may be an opportunity. This just popped up in my Twitter feed this morning: Check out Chicago Tecmo Super Bowl Meetup http://meetu.ps/c/3vdsP/zQCmY/a
  8. This is the custom board that will be used at the October 14th tournament to fit the needs of the format. It is still a work in progress as I have to add some graphics, logos, and stuff like that. Anyways this is how it was displayed 8/22:
  9. Yesterday we had 20 people come out to the Free to Play Cash Prize Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament. Out of the 20 people, 11 players tested their Tecmo skills in the tournament. I decided if we had 12 players or less that we were going to have a double elimination tournament and that is exactly what we did. 5 of the players were experienced Tecmo guys and the other 6 were semi-experienced to completely new to the game. This is what we learned from yesterday: - Flo has proven himself to be the best Tecmo Super Bowl player in Chicago. He beat Mort in the $50 Challenge back in May and went undefeated in the double elimination tournament yesterday. Congrats to Flo winning first place! - TecmoBo has some serious skills! His top 16 at Tecmo Madison was no fluke. He took second place yesterday splitting games with Mort in tournament play and beating myself and Joseph (Green Majik). It looks like we have a healthy rivalry brewing between TecmoBo and Mort after they also met in tournament play at Madison XIII. - There were some issues with the stream. Back in May the stream ran flawlessy for almost 5 hours at Michael Anthony's Pizza. This time around, live viewers were reporting some lag among other issues. Not too sure if it was the WIFI, Capture Card, Hyperkin Retron 1 HD, updated Elgato software or just the computer. Has anyone tried using a mobile WIFI Hotspot for live stream at tournaments? - The success of the October 14th Tournament in Chicago will rely heavily on the interest of the Tecmo community in the Midwest. Mort and I put in a considerable amount of resources into inviting in newer players and trying to build a local scene. Mort paid for a Tecmo Super Bowl Meetup Group in Chicago for 4 months that produced about 30 new faces to the group. That being said, Zero of those people showed up for the event in May (Mort's $50 Challenge) and none of them migrated over to Tecmobowl.org to find and show up to the Free Tournament we did yesterday. We created a Tier List System and Guide to help along newer players and it has for sure, but none of those players signed up for the paid tournament on October 14th (as of right now). So if you are within 4 hours driving distance of Chicago, then the October 14th Equalizer Touranment is for you. It starts at Noon and will most likely finish up before 7pm. It's a one day non overnight trip. We would love for you guys to come out, play, and help us grow the Chicago Scene. - Apparently Pete Stoyanovich on the Dolphins can't kick a 69 yard field goal by distance. When I was playing Flo, I was about to make the score 10-14 at the half and get the ball back after halftime, but Stoyanovich came up short on the field goal with 5 seconds on clock. Flo then JJed for a TD to take a 21-7 lead on me. Sour Grapes! @bruddog Have you seen this happen even if Stoyanovich is in bad condition? - The Tecmo Vets like the flexability of the Tier List. Mort likes to use a lesser teams versus newer players and Flo loves that Tier 2 call, so he can use QB Eagles. - Finally, the Chicago core group of Me, Mort, Flo, Jeff (TecmoBo), and Joseph (Green Majik) are motivated to make Chicago a great experience for the Tecmo Community. I appreciate these guys for what they helped out with and contributed to the tournament yesterday. Also, even though they probably won't see this, I am appreciative of the friends and local acquaintances I have that came out and played in the tournament yesterday and the event in May as well.
  10. Awesome! It will be good to meet you. More talent added to the field to keep us on our toes.
  11. There has been an update to seeding in this tournament after group play. Point differential is no longer a determining factor. This is to discourage Tecmo beatdowns and to have a more exciting seeding process. There will be a draft lottery for seeding based on your record after group play. It is based on the four possible record outcomes: Record - 0-3 - 20th seed will be selected here, then seeds will continue to be selected until there is no player that was 0-3 left Record - 1-2 - Seeds randomly selected until there are no players that were 1-2 left Record - 2-1 - Seeds randomly selected until there are no players that were 2-1 left Record - 3-0 - Seeds randomly selected until there are no players that were 3-0 left, 1st pick will be last player selected After the Draft Lottery, the Team Draft will follow: Determined seeding for the single elimination playoff creates the order for players to choose their team for the remainder of the tournament. (Tier 1 is excluded) For example, the first seed chooses their team first, then the second seed, third seed etc. 20th seed gets last choice of team.
  12. Free to Play Cash Prize Tecmo Super Bowl Tournament When - Tuesday August 22, 2017 Where - Michael Anthony's Pizzeria - 6434 W. Ogden Ave. Berwyn, IL 60402 Time - Registration 6:30pm to 7:15pm, Kickoff Time 7:30pm Buy In - Free to Enter Format: -Single Elimination Tournament -Size depends on attendance -Tom, Flo, and Mort will be the 1,2, and 3 seeds as we are putting up the prize money. Everyone else will be seeded accordingly based on our knowledge of the attendees. We are gearing this tournament towards the local Chicago players to introduce them to the Tecmo Tournament scene at no risk, but anyone is welcome to come play, including Tecmo veterans. Prizes: 1st - $100 2nd - $50 Rules: 1. Tier list for all games. Winner of coin toss is player 1 and chooses tier. Loser of coin toss is player 2 and chooses team from tier player 1 selected or a lower tier. Winner of coin toss chooses team second from tier originally chosen or lower tier. 2. 49ers are allowed in group play with limitation. Either Joe Montana or Jerry Rice has to be on the bench. They cannot be on the field at the same time on offense. You can switch them in and out once per quarter and an additional time at the end of half / game. 3. We will not keep track of teams used. Choose the team that best suites you under the tier list guidelines. 4. Customizing Playbooks and Lineup Changes. You are allowed to change your selected team's playbook before each game. Checking the change / substitution screen is allowed during gameplay. Once per quarter for each player is the recommendation. 5. WR/TE at RB: A WR/TE cannot carry the football unless it is a reverse. You can insert a WR or TE into a RB slot for lead blocking purposes, but he cannot carry the football. To further clarify, players such as Ernest Givins, Ricky Sanders, and Andre Rison cannot carry the football unless it is a reverse. 6. No ties for single elimination playoff. If a game is tied when regulation concludes, competitors will proceed to OT. All OT’s will be 5-minute sudden death periods. If no one scores in the first OT, the second OT will be only the first quarter in a new game. This process will be repeated until a winner emerges. So that one competitor does not start with the ball in every OT period, the receiving team (i.e. team that gets the ball first) shall alternate beginning with the second OT period. 7. Defensive Lineman Lurching is prohibited. In this tournament, lurching is defined by user controlling a defensive lineman, not engaging a blocker, then diving at the quarterback or running back. If you go around the offensive line, you are allowed to dive at the quarterback. Going through the offensive line is permitted with a defensive lineman, but diving at quarterback or running back would be considered lurching. 8. Nintendo Malfunctions: If there is an equipment failure in the first half, games will be replayed from the start. If equipment malfunctions in the 2nd half, only the second half is replayed. In that event, the scores from each half are added together to obtain a final score. If the game was uncompetitive or the equipment malfunctioned due to human error, the tourney organizers reserve the right to declare a winner without replaying any portion of the game. 9. Tournament Disputes: Tom Stahnke and Francis Mort Buennagel are the tournament referees. They will decide all disputes unless one of them is a player in the game. If one or both is a player in the disputed game, Kyle Floetl will resolve the dispute. 10. Competitors are allowed to bring their own controller, but it has to be an official Nintendo rectangle controller. Live Stream: The Retro Sports Gamer Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_b9V5HP0eJZyLuhuEmDf_g Please contact me at [email protected] if you have any questions about the tournament. Thanks!
  13. If you want to have a NES / SEGA Olympics that also includes non sports games, this is what I would go with: Nintendo (NES) - Tecmo Super Bowl (random selection, single elimination tourney) - RBI Baseball (random selection, single elimination tourney) - Super Mario Bros. (1st level time trial, no pipe entry) Sega Genesis - Mortal Kombat (random selection, single elimination tourney) - Street Fighter 2 (random selection, single elimination tourney) - Sonic 2 (1st level time trial) This list of games has mass appeal and is balanced. There's two sports games, two fighting games, and two platformers. The sports games are going to take the longest to play, but that's ok because they are both on NES. I'm assuming you would have access to more NES systems than Sega Genesis, so having more systems and games will help move things along with those two sports tourneys. By having two fighting games on SEGA, you really don't need that many systems or copies of the games. These single elimination tournaments will go by much quicker. You probably could get away with only two Sega Genesis systems at the event. Another key thing about this list of games is they are not expensive to obtain. All $10 or under except for Tecmo Super Bowl (and I'm sure getting copies of this game aren't a problem). I would keep the point system simple like you said, but give fourth place a point as well. So basically, it's 4 points for 1st, 3 points for 2nd, 2 points for third, 1 point for fourth. You can still keep your prize payout allotment the same for the overall standings as: Prize pool for Gold (55%), Silver 2nd (30%) and bronze 3rd (15%). I still would love to see an All Sports (4 Major American Sports) NES / SEGA Olympics sometime in the future. Game list would look like this: Nintendo (NES) - Tecmo Super Bowl (random selection, single elimination tourney) - RBI Baseball (random selection, single elimination tourney) Sega Genesis - NBA Jam (random selection, single elimination tourney) - NHL 94 (random selection, single elimination tourney) If there was an influx of systems available or if it was a two day event, I think this list of games would include all retro sports gamers alike: Nintendo (NES) - Tecmo Bowl - Tecmo Super Bowl - RBI Baseball - Baseball Stars Sega Genesis - NBA Jam - NBA Jam TE - NHL 94 - NHL 95

  18. Yeah, Mort let me know you had a copy. Glad you like it.
  19. Winner of the Coin Flip is Player 1 and gets choice of Tier Loser of Coin Flip is Player 2 and choses team first from the Tier Player 1 chose or a lower Tier Player 1 chooses team from Tier originally chosen or a lower tier We are proposing to use this Tier List during any events or tournament we run in the future. It aims to do a few things: - Educate newer players on what teams match up well against each other - Educate newer players on the best offensive and defensive player on each team as well as their most desirable attribute - Creates greater matchup flexibility - Allows players to focus on using favorite teams in each tier - Allows players to practice using a minimum of 10 teams (2 from each tier) to prepare for a tournament. - Gives a quick guide for Field Goal Kicking Range for each team for experienced and newer players alike If you would like me to send you the Tier List file in the original size as a PDF or JPG, please email me at [email protected]
  20. We had a great turnout yesterday for our first Chicago meet up at Michael Anthony's. We had over 30 people coming in and out throughout the course of the night. We had 6 guys there that have played in Tecmo Tournaments, and a lot of local friends who came to check it out either by personal invite or hearing about it on facebook. We ended up with 7 TV's hooked up with games. 3 Nintendos with Tecmo Super Bowl, 2 Super Nintendos (one with 4 player NBA Hangtime and one with NBA Jam TE 2K17), 1 Sega Genesis with 4 player NBA Jam TE, and 1 NES mini for people that weren't as interested in sports games. Mort ended up going 7-1 in the $50 challenge taken down by Flo and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Congrats to Flo! It was really a great time. We played from 6:30pm to 11:30pm on a TUESDAY. If anyone is interested in meet ups like this in Chicago let us know as we will have more in the future. Thank you to everyone who came out and Special Thanks to Mort, Joseph, and my brother Matt for bringing their TVs and equipment. If you want to check out the live stream from the event, here it is:
