  1. The best of three went insane right at the get go. I began by using two pro form plays with sanders. Calling them exclusively till Matt caught on I drove down to his twenty. Then he took me off guard by guessing run on third and short. I decided to settle for a field goal. Only to have it promptly block. After a couple of plays the fumbles began. Over the next few plays when ever I hit the ball carrier there was a fumble. Each one would be recovered by Matt but there had to be four in a row. Then after an exchange of three and outs I would make my first mistake. The score was 0-0 and Matt controlled the LB. With the wr's all open on pass two i decided to take whatever clark would get. Only to see a JJ int as Fulcher had crouched in to the perfect spot. I picked up the d to defend the short field and held him to a fg which I blocked. I would then drive for 7 with the key play being a cc catch to clark in front of fulcher. I then tapped off fulcher just in time and knocked off two defenders and juked down the field for a td. During the extra point I noticed that he could no longer get in with James Francis. Matt returned the favor in the second half as he drove down for a td. We might have exchanged 3 and outs but somewhere I would get the fg from a long distance. Only to have Matt answer it with about 40 on the clock. It looked like overtime would ensue. Yet I did have the ball at the fifteen with 10 seconds to go. I decided to put sanders at the top wr, gray at the bottom wr and clark to tight end. All game i had noticed he guessed mainly run and run and shoot passes. I had gone to the first pass pro form. It went unguessed and even better Matt choose James Francis. The CPU did not send Fulcher deep. There was no pass rush in time and I winged it. Sure enough once again JJ in the endzone as Sanders came down with the game winning td. In game 2 I had a chance to eliminate Matt. Yet now I began to make mistakes. This game I started with all pass plays to throw him off guard. Then hoping he would bite on going for an int I tried to decoy him on pass 4. Except he didn't bite, stayed on the deep wr I wanted and picked me off. Then on offense Brooks began to break contain. This pattern ensued as he went up 7-0. Undaunted I returned to a more balanced play call. Yet it was tough sledding. I barely managed to gut out a td to tie it up. Only to quickly see my lead vanish as he got a td then held me to a three and out. I would just barely hold him to a late field goal. In the second half it all fell apart for me. I got the opening kickoff return and fumbled it away. Matt settled for three this time but now I felt pressure to score quickly. In mere moments with the ball back Fulcher took it away and then I could not stop him till the redzone. Then I did manage to score once more but it was never close again. My defense would contain but not stop. That game I could not move the ball at all and though I held in the redzone the field goals added up to make it a 26-14 loss. Then as Matt took a break I began to think of a game plan. I just could not rely on any big plays or the running game. Instead I was going to have to take what was assured. Since I knew he would guess a lot of run it meant short passing and qb sneaks. Meanwhile on defense all I had to do was get a couple of guesses and keep him off balance using mostly Mike Coffer. It started great. Just as I planned I began to move the ball with relative ease. Mostly on wide open passes, qb sneaks and the occasional sanders run. Then on defense I began to figure out how to hold him on downs. Slowly I began to press and it unraveled for Matt. As the defensive pressure increased so did the constant qb sneaks and scrambles. I would go up 14-0 in the second when a big break came my way. Only i can't remember what it was but I suspect it was a short punt. This put me in range for a field goal to make it 17-0 at the half. At that point I came out strong in the third going up 23-0. Eventually I would go up 31-0. At which point again I would like to clarify I observed the squares to see if I could land the game on one of the make a wish squares. Having squares for the finals was a great idea and I hope we can try it at Madison. Seeing it would take a lot of work to get on a wish square I just messed around and punted. Then Matt made one big play to get inside the 10. Yet this was just not his game as I shut down his team in four straight plays. With a minute to go i chose the pro form run up the middle to run down the clock. Only to find myself Lurched. "That was my one" Matt joked. It was a good joke and a reminder it is all in good fun. I highly doubt I could ever repeat a performance like that on him anytime soon. In fact now I worry about our next game cause as I said after wards we seem to be exchanging games. Hopefully if we do meet again it will be the Madison finals. Though I will do my best to prove that fate wrong. Anyways I then took home my reward of a couple hundred bucks and an awesome trophy. Another high light was the small solid one piece trophy. Instead of the nightmare of a time I had getting that Madison trophy into my bag then getting it back together again. (Hint Hint). Not to mention it look so cool on my desk. I can't wait for Madison and the next Cleveland tourney too. Which I would love to play in again.
  2. This was a great tourney. lot of fun, good bar, great players, prizes, surprises and very well ran. I hope we can do it again next year. Here is my best attempt at a recap. The bar was a typical corner bar serving food while giving up the back area for tecmo. It set up for four tv's in the space of about a large living room for tecmo. Just enough room to slowly but steadily get on our way for tecmo. We immediately drew lots for seeding where I got A6 and Lou B 5. Soon side B became the side of doom as both Matt and Nick joined Louis in side B. Meanwhile I was facing off against a field of people that included a cincy tourney intrant in Jay, a couple of locals and others who would be very surprising in the skill they would display on side a. Then once everyone arrived came the moment I was dreading. The random draw which I felt could only go bad for me. If I got say the 1 pick everyone on here would feel I had practically won the tourney at the draw. Yet at the same time even with my experince the teams left at 14 would take a lot of work to win with. So I let a couple guys go then hearing a few middle numbers and 13 I felt confident. I reached in got a ball and couldn't get my hand out of the box. I got another ball pulled back and to my relief I had the number 4. Then after announcing it I moved my thumb and noticed this odd line next to the number 4. It was a one. I had really drawn the last pick. Next to me a stunned TK with 13 looked equally bummed out. I told Louis and Toolie it looked like I had to earn this one unlike the week before. I hardly paid much attention as side B drew, Louis didn't either and ended up getting 5 on the last draw, toolie got 8 or 9 and I was carefully debating teams like the rams, skins, fish, Den, TB, SD and such. Suddenly it was my turn to draw as I took my sheet and began crossing out. Sf, Buf, Hou, NYG, KC, Chi but suddenly I see cleveland, arizona and Pittsburg. Also taken was Philly, SD, Rams and washington. Leaving a choice of Detroit or Cincy. I decedied to take Sanders and Gray instead of Cincy and Fulcher. It was a game changer to have such great teams left. i figured a couple guys had just taken teams they liked figuring they would not do well or felt they had some advantage which was not there. I never expected any of the lower level teams to get far against the powerhouses. Moments later Louis got hou to drop to 5 and toolie had a smiliar choice and took cincy. Nick would end up with Philly. The tourney got underway as Louis began to romp to an easy opener against mia and toolie dominated early with fulcher. Meanwhile I played bryne in my first game who had Washington. Suddenly I had a flashback to a previous slaughter house as he decided to opt with the original playbook. Thoughts of the week before made me think it was time to go for the rushing title. Then after a few JJ's and some bad offense on my part I was down 13-7 at the half. In the second half I would score 14 unanswered in the third. But it would take two stands holding Bryne to a field goal before I sneaked out with a 21-16 win. Flashbacks to my start at Chi ensued. Meanwhile I looked up for one of many shockers of the day. Someone on side B was giving a beatdown up 55-0 against the 49ers. He ran up 395 with Anderson and I kissed any chance of the rushing title aside. Later one of the tourney hosts would abuse the cards original playbook to go for at least 60+ points. Any chance of bonus money was long gone as often I had to rotate my rb's to wr to get passes to work. Then came several confusing issues. In his second game Louis one a tight one against sd while I sat next to him. Which confused the Dan the tourney host to thinking he had put us in the wrong bracket. Ever since a kid I hate to be confused with Louis which only worsened the situation. But luckily it was cleared up. But the incident is a reminder of one thing during a tourney. The guys running it are very busy and need you to help them out by reporting the results asap. Yet this was a minor incident in an otherwise great performance for Dan. More confusion and annoyance ensued as one of the few onlookers was a little toasted and kept pointing out his buddy would beat me for a 100 bucks in a one on one game. Hearing about my past wins got him a little randy about taking my title. Confused I though he was in the tourney and told him if we matched up then we would play but I had to focus on the tourney. Then he again and again pointed this out. His buddy was cool about it and wanted to go one on one for a beer. I'm not against a friendly wager but the tourney comes first. With only 4 tv's and so many games and my focus to win the tourney I told them maybe afterwards. Not to mention the fact I don't drink and play at the same time during a serious tourney. Again flashback to multiple bad starts like Chi and even then I was sluggish. Luckily I had some red bull in the car and dunked half of it after game 1. Game to was against Jay (Giants) who was one of the organizers and who was in the cincy tourney. At the time I had completely forgotten our last game, his name though he seemed familiar. He would get off to a bad start falling behind 16 nothing at the half. A safety near halftime then I got the ball and got another td. Up 23 to nothing Jayson got it going getting two td's to make it a closer game. Once again I wasn't playing the greatest but I was at least ahead most of the time. My third game was one of two blow outs. I defeated Eddie's Buffalo Bills 51-7 or so. It was close early but I would break out to 21-0 at the half then have a wild 3rd where QB bills threw an int and Thomas fumbled. I briefly entertained the points lead but I had started the game with the Philly-ari game going to the fourth with the eagles already in the 60's. In other news Louis raced out to his best start ever winning his first three games. Including a tough matchup against Nick's eagles. Setting up a matchup with toolie to determine who would be assured of at least 50 dollars. Then Louis began to falter. Through some sort of deal with a demon Lou has a new found tapping speed that is out of this world. Yet his inexperince on defense with CB1 caused trouble as toolie picked up plenty of good yard runs on the ground. Toolie's d frustrated moon and it was 14-0 cincy in the second. Then Louis put together a drive to about the thirty only to have a fg blocked. Yet now his d picked up steam and he would hold. His next drive got to the seven but he did not have much time left. Lou decided to take 3 points and hope one more stop would do it. In the second half drew hill shone and Louis quickly got a TD on the board. But toolie would answer with a td. Undaunted Louis began to abuse coverage catches to Hill and dump off passes to McNeil. Stingy d made it a long drive but Lou managed to get back within 4 with about 3 minutes on the clock. WIth about a minute left he even held Toolie on the 40 and got the ball back with 26 seconds but close to the endzone. The final JJ attempt would not even come close as Moon misfired. Lou played a great game I felt confident he could place in the money with a win. In my fourth game I would play a battle against Jayson (KC). It just seemed KC could blow up every run without too much effort. Worse my plan to run my plays at DT back fired as blockers vanished and DT always would come back to get me followed by 2-7 guys. Even moving Sanders to wr would not alieveate the defensive pressure as the coverage was excellent. It forced me to move the ball slowly and sneak a lot with Peete. Meanwhile Paige was making my defense look bad. I would go down 14-13 at half time cause DT had even blocked an extra point. In the third I knew it would take defense and a miracle to keep Paige from catching the JJ over me. Luckily I managed to first take a lead on a long time consuming drive. Then I managed to call plays Paige went deep on to off balance him. Finally there where several breaks. Earlier he had been up 14-6 with the ball only to fumble. Later on he threw an int and I think he went for a fourth down to end up short by a few inches. More luck went against him as Paige didn't jump on a jj attempt and meanwhile I completed a big pass deep to open my lead to 13. That would prove to be enough. But I was still worried about the rematch. This tourney had plenty of suprises. Jayson's play with KC was excellent but nothing prepared any of us for the run TK went on in the losers bracket with the steelers. His defense was amazing as he slowly began to gut out win after win. His all shotgun offense using all curls mistfied several people. Even without his primary defensive weapon, the lurch he would defeat Jay's Giants. In that game we learned he expected unlimited luruching and used all shotguns to limit the effectiveness of the Lurch. Yet still he was a good enough player without it. Then to my shock he took down Jayson to meet me in the side A final game. Of course his luck was running out I told myself. I would simply run all my plays at woodson and pick him off. All curls was no mystery to me. After all, I used to play tpc against sconnie and he used and abused it with minn back in the day. I was going to win and there would be no need for a second game. Meanwhile Louis was in a struggle with Nick and began to fall behind. He would not be able to come back and it set up what turned out to be a grudge match from back in the day between Toolie and Nick. However, I had my own problems. I just couldn't keep the Steelers running game under control at first. All curls was still taking bites out of me. Yet as he got closer I would stone wall him forcing him to kick fg's. But on offense his d was incredible. If he had only gotten Chi he might have had a chance to go all the way. But with pittsburg he could not break through. 7-6 at half was not what I pictured at the start of the game. It became a war of attrition. Eventually I would have to use the arrow trick to get some big gains in the second half. and bust out to a 14-6 lead. Yet TK would quickly drive down and seem on his way to at least one more fg. Then I finally got white near the ball and picked Brister. Yet on offense I found I could now do very little without risking a turnover. So I gutted out a few plays and punted to count on defense to slow him. Yet his next drive he would get a fg that made it 14-9. At this point I would stop him two more times but I just could not get my offense going. Yet now pittsburg finally became an impediment to TK as he could not move the ball quickly enough to get anywhere close to the endzone. Settling at the end for a jj attempt with brister it was caught near the thrity. But the wr was double covered and subduded easily. I was going to the final against Toolie. Nick and Toolie had apparently once played a whole season with their respective teams and met in the super bowl as college students. It had been a close game but Matt won. As Nick put it from that day foward Matt became the better player. This game turned into whitewash quickly. Which turned into a best of three final matchup.
  3. then my advise to you and anyone trying to get a tourney going is to run it by some radio guys, video games stores or anyone else who can advertise for you. good way to find people. or win stuff on the cheap. more tourneys the better. for all you know one tourney in vegas could spawn a set of west coast tourneys.
  4. why not. Name: Morty McFly Team: Packers Number: 47 Position: ILB Face: Black dude with a lot of hair.
  5. still 4th place isn't bad. nice job buddy and great job running the tourney at the same time.
  6. its a good matchup cause the saints just seem to be able to take advantage of all the jets weaknesses. As i nearly discovered the hard way.
  7. cool. i'd love to watch a good finals game even if it is on web tv and not live.
  8. The tourney was great. I won. Lou made it to the second round before falling and stratis in the third round. There was a lot of people in a little bar at BW's BBQ but a great time. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. More importantly there is a lot of local interest in tecmo. Several signs of future tourney's from the radio station, gaming store and us in a more traditional grass roots way. Can't wait to get the ball rolling. But first its off to cleveland next weekend.
  9. the third qualifier had a lot of people, more tv's and a few good suprises. The number one score of 93 points scored went to Louis. my best was just a mere 84-3. Straits made it despite a very bad game of 56 points when the cpu screwed him over. Still he then broke out to score 77 points. Anyone above 70 should easily make it to the finals. Also I met a former TPC player in bildosagins who I think qualified for the international tournament at BW BBQ on Friday. Yes the radio guys have been calling it that for the last week. Its amazing how tecmo brings guys and beers together. I saw the kid who lived behind me when growing up for the first time in 10 years. He scored 70 so I think he will be in as well. Also there seems to be a lot of interest in tecmo here this tourney is showing. Might be possible to jump start a better tourney. Or just one more excuse to drink. In bad news we learned there will be no playbook changes in the finals. Wr will be allowed at rb. Most of the people playing do not like the rules but supposedly time is all important compared to the two minutes it takes to make a proper change. I doubt one final appeal for a change will do much but in the future I've been told this might change. I hope to use this tourney to get momentum going to play tecmo. Also i can finally give away all those koozies I took from the cincy tourney to help promote tecmo, this site and get people to play and have fun. The finals are just two days away. And it turns out Lou and I may set a record to play in consecutive tourney's as we just signed up for the Cleveland tourney.
  10. louis, myself and stratis are interested if these spots are still open.
  11. it might have been a bit more serious if it had been jets or that level versus san fran with no playbook changes. It does get guys playing but getting the score up doesn't take much. A few onsides kicks, lucky breaks and calling a pass play proven to get open time after time. Most of the game i just call the third shotgun and throw to Thurman. A few of the guys might have some promise. Yet i have a feeling few of them have done much to practice for man on man play. So I feel like a kid about to steal candy from a baby. With the background thought that if I lose to anyone but lou and stratis I may not be able to show my face anywhere ever again.
  12. day to of qualifying had to have at least 40 people. A lot of participation do to constant radio advertising, word of mouth and other internet advertising is making this a good event. Lou broke 70 with 71 which should easily get him in. Or anyone on here who might be interested. The finals have been updated to allow playbook changes but they will also allow a wr to have running plays. Lesser of two evils in my book. Finally I again have a strong feeling there will be another tourney at some point. Oogie games, which runs it is a retro gaming company that does good business and has ran other tourney's. The turn out today was incredible and a lot of people plan to return or go for their first try at the final trial. Hopefully we can build some momentum from this and bring about a very good buffalo tourney in the future.
  13. Lou and i went to the first qualifier. I had an event high 84. one higher than the runner up. Lou topped out at 63. The final field and rules will not be set till the final qualifier. There are some changes to the basic information they gave on the tourney. 1. the qualifier is Buf vs Dal, cpu is Dal. it goes by points scored with differental being a tie breaker. 2. no nose tackle use allowed. no playbook changes in either event though that might change for the final. 3. the final field is not the top ten at each event but rather the top 32 overall. 4. they will be doing a coinflip matchup selection just like madison. one person picks matchup and the other team. 5. Strong indication of this tourney to happen annually. This is as i suspected a first time go around to feel things out. The guys there showed a strong interest in tecmo and other tourneys. So hopefully a bigger buffalo tourney is on the horizion. 6. They didn't use original systems and instead used three in one consoles for snes, sega and nes. Very modern wide screen tv's are the norm unlike most tourney's where the action is on older televisions. As for qualifying in case anyone has two days open i'm guessing 70 points will more than assure entry. Lou and I plan to go to the final qualifier at the macroons which is closer to our home in Cheektowaga. The final will be very near Ralph Wilson stadium. The first bar was next door to the Ralph. Cazumel's is downtown. Again I doubt I have much interest on here but the guy running it wants to do a tourney every year. Also how about the growing popularity of tecmo tourney's with three tourney's in two weeks. Two on consecutive days and all in the winter. A time of year I originally thought would make a tourney very hard if not impossible.
  14. The Buffalo tournament is being ran by 103.3 WEDG fm in Buffalo. As such its a different format. Basically to make the tourney you need to qualify against the computer. Run up the score on the cpu as much as possible. There are 3 qualifying days. Where the top ten point differentials go on to the finals. (I know many on the site will think this is a terrible way of going about it but considering the short notice and trying to target local players I expect it to work well for a first tourney.) If your interested qualifying is this Thursday (5-7:30pm), next Thursday (5-7:30pm) and the Wednesday (5-7:30pm) before the main tourney. Then the main tourney on the Friday the 28th from 8 pm-10 pm. The grand prize is two tickets to Myrtle beach. This probably excludes everyone on this site from playing. The short notice doesn't help. I'm hoping the next tourney either run by them or me will be much better. However if you can make the times Lou and I plan to go to the first qualifying event. We'll post details on how much they let us get away with. We figure you can lurch, hopefully change books, maybe change the cpu's book, set an ideal match up. Where going to be as cheap as they allow us to get into the real tourney. Anyways if your close enough to be interested we'll try our best to give you as much info as possible so you can make the real tourney. If not well at least I (or Lou) may have something to do on our vacation time after all. Full offical details are here.
  15. another update. this tourney will happen. not sure how good it will be to travel too. I don't know much but here is what I've learned. Its going to involve a qualifying day just to get into the tourney which of course eliminates any serious travelers outside a few hours of the buffalo area. It will be very soon. Most likely occurring by the end of the month just before if not the same week as the Cleveland event. Proceeds are going to charity so the prize may not be a cash prize. There will be a prize for winning. This station gives out some really cool shit for its promo's. There is no clue on what game play rules will be. It might be anything goes. Team selection might be anything. (which is not a bad thing for those with less experience or those with more experience). Supposedly a real live radio announcement is coming on Monday. Lou and I will be listening when we can. Which is difficult for me as most of my work shift overlaps the 3-7 show this will be announced on. Still despite some misgivings this I have a feeling this is going to be a good tourney with a fairly large local turnout. With any luck it will be a annual event if it goes well. Which may eventually lead to a better format for those from outside the WNY area.
  16. beefman tried to put together a vegas tourney a couple of years ago. he had connections in vegas and a lot of interest so it could be done. but i think part of the reason it fell apart was financial issues and vacation time. I'd love to do it but it would have to be planned out a year before and I'd have to be sure of the participants before I bonned up the money. Better off with regional tourney's in various cities imo.
  17. finally got an update. this tourney is most likely going to happen. planning stages are taking them longer but they will have final details sometimes soon. when i know the final details i will pass them along.
  18. As of now I know nothing more of this other than hearing commercials for a week on this channel about an announcement yesterday that did not come. I've emailed the show several times but I'm getting no response as of yet. As soon as I learn anything I will post again.
  19. The Shredd and Ragan show. 103.3 FM in buffalo is hosting a tecmo super bowl tourney. Details to be announced on Jan 3rd. looks like we got a buffalo tourney in the making. I've already heard about three commercial's for it in the past 24 hours. Its a very popular rock/alternative show and there talk show has been a top draw for the drive home for years. This should hopefully draw a lot of local people. I'll post any links as I learn more. Hopefully I'll get on the show on the 3rd too.
  20. still got a couple spots open. Lou, stratis and I might be interested. I know louis and I can make it. gotta get ahold of stratis. well guess i should have scrolled down. oh well. always next time.
  21. anyone going to be in chicago tommorrow. Lou and I are getting there around 2 pm and after we check in near midway airport we have nothing to do but play tecmo and wait for the bus to the tourney sat. anyways if your around friday and want to hang out. email me at [email protected] or text 7163926900
  22. just scheduled my flight and sent the email for louis and me. can't wait.
  23. so it will be a tourney. now i'm in for sure. i like the ryder ideal but it sucks if you don't have a strong team. hopefully you can still do a small ryder team event on your own. in the future if skils and interst grow a real full grown ryder cup would be fun. as for a tourney in chicago i can't wait.
  24. i'm interested. team is a question. team buffalo has 2 members. but lou and i had planned to jump ship to the team from the old country (southern Ohio).
  25. all right. we are going to give this thing a shot next sat around 1 at AJ's lounge in buffalo. i know there are a couple guys in the area so if your interested come on out to buffalo. email me or post here if you want to learn more. my email is [email protected]
