  1. What a great time at KumiteV! Definitely our best tournament to date, with a beautiful spot overlooking downtown Detroit on the 3rd floor of Detroit Beer CO Two weeks prior to the tournament we sat at just 13 players, which was very discouraging to say the least with all we had done in preparation of the date. With walk ups, and further promotion we ended up with 31 players, each with at the very minimum, 5 games played, and sending many of them away with some great raffle prizes to boot! Matt O'Toole walked away with his 1st Kumite Cup title, after two previous runner-up finishes, and our first Michigan champion - which is just crazy to think about! Matt Diaz was our runner-up, with Rico and myself taking home 3rd and 4th place honors. Mark Nutter ousted Ryan McKay in the consolation tourney final on a JJ at the buzzer! Madison Tecmo Director, Dave Murray helped out the Kumite shipping over 3 Hyperkin RetroN 1 systems. They were so helpful in the tournament cause, as they nearly got us to 1/2 NES stations to Kumite participants, which would have allowed us to breeze through the tournament. We didn't quite get to the half way point, but the systems worked out awesome, as they seem to be much more reliable compared to some of the old Nintendo's out there. Louis B. and Nick C. took home RetroN systems as raffle prizes. So to Dave, thank you so much for that man! Lastly, a tremendous thank you to the great people at Detroit Beer Co for making us feel right at home the whole day. It can be a long day, and everyone there was just fantastic throughout, and for that we are so grateful, and hope to be back again next year! A big personal thank you to Matthew O'Toole, Chas Claus, and Jason Ley for your contributions to the tournament cause. We couldn't have made the day the success it was without you guys! See you guys in Madison, and hopefully next year at Kumite VI!

  7. Do you recall a price on that parking structure @toolie? Was it $10 for the day did we think? The Greektown parking structure is free, and is about 8 blocks away. The Detroit People Mover (public trans) has a Greektown stop, in the casino, for I believe $.75. That could definitely be a way to go for many. If bringing equipment however, you'll certainly want to swing by the venue, and at least drop it off. I believe there are meters right outside the venue, and other lots as well.
  8. We are just about a month away from Detroit's Tecmo Kumite V, on Saturday, March 4, 2017! If you have yet to sign up for the tournament, what in the heck are you waiting for?! The fifth rendition of the Tecmo Kumite will be the biggest and best yet! We are anticipating at least 40 participants for Kumite V, which will pay out at least 5 spots, including over $500 for 1st place - in addition to ample raffle, and consolation prizes! We have an amazing space, on the 3rd floor of the beautiful Detroit Beer Co, 1529 Broadway, in Downtown Detroit. For the first time, we'll be throwing an official Friday night pre-party, where we'll have some beers, rock out tons of Tecmo, and get everyone pre-registered for the tournament on Saturday. We have stepped up our raffle game in a big way for 2017! We will be raffling off the following items: an autographed Barry Sanders Detroit Lions mini helmet; an autographed Warren Moon, Haywood Jeffries, Curtis Duncan, Ernest Givens, AND Lorenzo White, Houston Oilers mini helmet; a paid entry to the SOLD OUT Tecmo Madison XIII on April 8; a TSB 25th Anniversary Edition NES cartridge, courtesy of Tecmopsycho; TSB hoodies courtesy of tecmobowlers.com; Mitchell and Ness retro snapback hats. For each paid entry, you will receive 5 complimentary raffle tickets. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased for $2 a piece. We'll also be hosting a Tecmo Kumite pre-party get together a couple of weeks prior to the tournament where we will be you signed up for Kumite V, raffle off a few items, and of course rock out some Tecmo! We are targeting Thursday night, February 23 for this event. Both THU 2/23 and FRI 3/3 pre-party venues TBD. If you are hesitant to PayPal your entry for whatever reason, this night will be for you, to get you signed up at the discounted rate, and you can get valuable Tecmo reps in against good competition. Stay tuned for this get-together announcement over the coming days. HOTELS AND PARKING There are many nice hotels options within a short distance from the venue, but they can be a bit pricy in upwards of $150 a night. Those places include the Greektown Casino Hotel, Atheneum Suite Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn, Double Tree, Westin Book Cadillac, Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, among many. If you want to stay somewhere nicer, there are options in the burbs, that are quite affordable, but about a 25 minute drive north. Two stand out as values, and are within a mile or two of the venue: Holiday Inn Express is $117 a night, and the Crown Plaza $135 a night. Source: hotels.com. Below URL shows distance from Detroit Opera House, which is right across the street from Detroit Beer Co. The Fridaynight pre-party will be held, ideally at the same venue, but at worst, in the same relative vicinity of the tournament venue Saturday. https://www.hotels.com/search.do?resolved-location=NEIGHBORHOOD%3A1664822%3AUNKNOWN%3AUNKNOWN&destination-id=1664822&q-destination=Downtown%20Detroit,%20Michigan,%20United%20States%20of%20America&q-check-in=2017-03-03&q-check-out=2017-03-05&q-rooms=1&q-room-0-adults=2&q-room-0-children=0&sort-order=DISTANCE_FROM_LANDMARK&sort-lid=1657618 The Detroit Opera House is right across the street from Detroit Beer Co. 10. Most of the city is safe, just like any other city. I will possibly post some hotel info in the coming days, but all of the casinos would be decent options, but expensive. Greektown Casino is the closest, followed by MGM, and Motor City Casinos - all of which are within about a mile of the venue.

Tournament day entry will be $40 day-of on Saturday. Doors are at 10:00AM, with kickoff at 11:00AM sharp. FORMAT: We have slightly tweaked the tournament format for Kumite V to what we are calling a "Swiss-Buffalo" format. There will be a 5 to 6 round "Swiss-Style" format for the preliminary rounds, which pits similar records against one another each proceeding round. This will help minimize the time it generally takes to complete the preliminary rounds, and the day as a whole. After the Swiss rounds have completed, the player pool will be divided into an Sweet 16 "Buffalo-Style" finale, where you will select your choice of team, for the duration of the tournament, or at least up until the Championship game, TBD. As per usual, we will also hold at least one consolation round as well. EQUIPMENT: Tournament competitors are encouraged to bring any and all equipment they are able to, including: NES, TSB cart, controllers, ac adapters, RF or RCA wires, extension cords, power strips, and most importantly small sized televisions. Please keep in mind, we may be in need of said equipment for the duration of the event. ONLY original NES controllers are welcome, no turbo, no dogbone, etc. If you plan on bringing any equipment, please be sure to label your equipment, and plan on arriving 30 minutes in advance to help set up. We thank you in advance for anything you are able to assist the tournament with! DETROIT TECMO KUMITE V: PARTICIPANTS PLAYER / HOMETOWN BIG NUTT... UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OH CHAD E... MILWAUKEE, WI TECMODELL42… WATERFORD, MI TECMONINJA... OH ULTIMATE WEAPON... N.RIDGEVILLE, OH DETROIT TECMO KUMITE V: TOURNAMENT RULES (changes for Kumite V in red) 1. Tournament Format: We have slightly tweaked the tournament format starting at Kumite V to what we are calling a "Swiss-Buffalo" format. There will be a 5 to 6 round "Swiss-Style" format for the preliminary rounds. For the first round the matchups are totally random. For subsequent rounds, matchups are chosen (by an algorithm) that pit players with similar records against each other (e.g. in round two, winners will play winners and losers will play losers). After the Swiss rounds have completed, the top 16 players will advance to the "Buffalo-Style" Sweet 16 finale, where you will select your choice of team, to use through Sweet 16, Elite 8, and Final 4. Championship Game: For the championship game the players will play a MIN-DET matchup for all the marbles (Herschel vs. UTC Commissioner William White). The winner of a coin toss will get to get his choice of team OR his choice of controller, with the coin toss loser getting his choice of the other. Consolation Brackets: Depending on the number of competitors, there will be one or two consolation brackets (single elimination) for the players that do not qualify for the championship bracket. The format for these brackets will be Buffalo Style. The winners of these brackets will receive a their choice among the raffle prizes. More on Swiss Format below. 2. Byes: No ONE PLAYER will exceed more than 1 BYE for the duration of the Swiss (traditional group play) rounds. 3. Team Selection: The coin flip winner can choose A) which controller they want or who has to call the match-up. The coin flip loser will get his choice of the other option. Whichever player calls the match-up, the other player will get their choice of team. Ex1: Matt wins toss and takes P1. Eric calls PHX-PIT. Matt takes PHX. Ex 2: Matt wins toss and takes P1. Eric wants Matt to call. Matt calls MIN-WAS. Eric takes MIN Ex 3: Matt wins toss and calls KC-MIA. Eric takes P1 and MIA. Ex 4: Matt wins toss and wants Eric to call. Eric calls SD-DEN and takes P1. Matt takes DEN. 4. “One Matchup Once” Rule: Players may only select a particular matchup once throughout the entire tournament. For instance, if Player 1 selects Packers/Browns, this person cannot call that exact matchup for the rest of the tournament. Player 2, however, is free to select that matchup later in the tournament. 5. Customizing Playbooks and Lineup Changes: Customizing playbooks is permissible. You may access your “change” screen (screen where you check player conditions and make substitutions) only twice per half. This helps speed up the games. 6. WR/TE at RB: Playing with a WR or TE at RB is strictly prohibited. A WR or TE is able to play in the RB2 slot, but ONLY a RB can receive direct handoffs or pitches. The only time a WR or TE can run the ball is on a reverse. Outside of this: RB, WR, and TE are interchangeable. 7. Ties: Ties will be permitted for Kumite V based on the new "Swiss-Buffalo" tournament format. More on this below. 8. Lurching: Lurching is strictly prohibited. If you want to rush with a DL, you must either go outside the offensive tackles or “popcorn” someone on the offensive line. You may not simply go around your blocker and dive. Note that this rule does not apply to LBs. 9. Nintendo Malfunctions: If there is an equipment failure in the first half, games will be replayed from the start. If equipment malfunctions in the 2nd half, only the second half is replayed. In that event, the scores from each half are added together to obtain a final score. If the game was uncompetitive or the equipment malfunctioned due to human error, the tourney organizers reserve the right to declare a winner without replaying any portion of the game. 10. Tournament Disputes: Eric O’Dell and Matt O’Toole are the tournament referees. They will decide all disputes unless one of them is a player in the game. If one or both is a player in the disputed game, Joe Moskwa or Chas Claus will resolve the dispute. 11. Also, do not forget to label your equipment. We thank you in advance for anything you are able to assist the tournament with! 12. Entry Fee, and Prizes: Tournament entry fee will be $35 PayPal in advance to: [email protected], or $40 day of, upon check-in. Cash and raffle prizes for will be ample, with the winner taking home the Kumite Cup! SWISS FORMAT Preliminary Rounds (Swiss Format): The preliminary rounds (five or six) will be run in a Swiss format. Results will be entered into a Challonge.com Swiss Style Tournament that will be created the day of the Kumite. Each round players will face a unique opponent (there will be no repeat opponents in the preliminary rounds). For the first round the matchups are totally random. For subsequent rounds, matchups are chosen (by an algorithm) that pit players with similar records against each other (e.g. in round two, winners will play winners and losers will play losers). The schedule for the subsequent round will be generated as soon as the final score from the current round is entered. Each player receives one point for a win and a half-point for a tie. If there are an odd number of competitors then one player each round will receive a bye. Byes are treated like wins and the player receiving the bye is awarded one point. For all rounds after the first, the scheduling algorithm awards the byes to players with a low point total. At the end of the preliminary rounds the players will be ranked using the following criteria. Total Points; Points Earned vs. All Players with the Same Total Points; Median-Buchholz Score (see description below); Point Differential. The Median-Buchholz Score for a player is the sum of their opponents’ total points with the highest and lowest of these scores discarded. Hence if six games are played by Player X and his opponents’ point totals are 4, 3, 3, 1, 1, 0 then his Median-Buchholz score would be 3+3+1+1=8. It’s essentially a strength of schedule metric. If you receive a bye then this score will be lower as there will be one less figure in your sum. SWEET 16 Single Elimination. The top 16 seeded players after the preliminary round advance to a single-elimination “Elite 8: Buffalo Style” championship bracket. The games are laid out in a standard fashion (1v16, 2v15, etc), but for this stage players will draft a single team that they will use until the championship game. For this portion of the tournament the following teams may not be chosen: San Francisco, Buffalo, New York Giants. The player ranked #1 gets first choice, the player ranked #2 gets second choice, and so on. The choice of controller for each game will be determined by coin flip. ***
  12. Giving free entry to the tournament winners of the past year is a really great idea. Would love to make it out this time around!
  13. OMG. How am I missing this thing? Damn you second child. Damn you! BTW, the video had me pissing myself. Nice work!
  14. Amazing photos! What type of place was this held at? This is exactly that kind of place we are looking to host our Detroit tourney!
  15. Thank you so much to DT, and the Buennagel's for putting on such a great show. The tournament format is so unique, and the newly added Buffalo Six Pack was a great addtion to add even more intrigue to the day. I would also like to extend a big shout out to all of the other individuals that help this tournament to run as smoothly as possible, including Neerm, and Kevin C. for having better handwriting than Louis. We got kicked out of the bar at about 1am on Friday night, so the staff could close up shop. However, that was not the case. Kevin was the last one to leave, and was blindsided by 7 or so randoms playing Tecmo in our upstairs quarters of the establishment, until nearly 4am. He stayed with all the NES gear to make sure that there was no foul play involved. You are the man Kevin. I can't make it out to your tournament in Columbus, but given your commitment to the Tecmo community, I am sure it will be an awesome time. Also a special thanks to John for the live stream feed. The HDMI output from the NES, made for an incredibly clear stream, that I was in awe of the whole day. I didn't get a chance to catch any of the stream just yet, but I look forward to doing so soon! Lastly, a special shot out to DT for letting Toolie and I crash, for showing me the Buffalo late night scene, and for shipping out my pillow I had forgotten in his car! Oooof. Keep an eye on the mail bub. You might have something special on the way for you, to pay homage to the good times. Thanks so much brother! And I guess, one more last.... Congratulations Morty on a great run, and yet another title! The championship round, Bills/Giants matchup was a nice touch, and the game we played was crazy fun, full of back and forth action. I really enjoyed it man, and kudos to you on a great day! Hope to see you all at the Detroit tourney next winter/spring-ish. 'Til next time gents!
  16. What does the most recent field look like? Can someone post. Thanks. See y'alls tonight!
  17. agreed. 25,000 online games X 20 min. per game comes out to 8333 hours. take into account his youth, and admitted lack of previous console play, it doesn't really come close to 60,000 hours.
  18. I hate to be critical, cause it truly was a good article, and I'm sure I can speak for many, that we are so appreciative of him and his story. He and I talked at the Plaza for a while, about what the lead would be given how Gats didn't want to give his name. He went as far as to consider leaving out the outcome type of stuff because of it, which I thought may have been a good idea. I thought it was strange leading with that particular story of him remaining anonymous, when there are certainly a number of storylines that could have portrayed Tecmo in a better light, and make for a better story. In addition, I plan to make it a commitment to contradict the stories' sentiment, that this is, as we know it - The end of Tecmo. #LongLiveTecmo
  19. I'm not a part of the North Dakota contigent, but like to think I'm a close friend. I believe the game is called Slappsies, and not Slappies. Food for thought.
  20. I'm in gents! I will try to get the rest of the Detroit crew in on this as well! See you Saturday, April 23!
  21. Yeah, that was my thought. Plus, with free entries, there will be tons of people on it. If it were to be a pay pool, it would limit the amount of individuals in it, and increase the prize.
