  1. Thanks man.   Looking to improve me amateur stream this year based on the suggestions from last year.   I've added a ground loop isolator from a suggestion from @Neerrmand and USB powered hub from a suggestion from @davemurray.    Not sure if anyone knows who that is?     Anyways....   Will be streaming for those that would like to watch.    Good luck gents!

I should probably add the link to the stream.

  2. Based on the info I've read from others on here I made a probability chart for reference.  Odds may not be exact.   Please excuse the crudity of this model. If something does not look right let me know and I can update.

It the cut scene does not come up below are the APB odds.  " If the cut scene does come up it uses 50APB" or 20.3%

Updated the below chart based on Bruddog's HSTL discord post. Thanks Bruddog!

Just a friendly heads up related to streaming from last year, for some reason, the night before the Internet held up when we did the casual games streams/testing, but once the place filled up day of the tournament, it got worse.  I'm guessing a lot of Tyler's(bar owner) patrons have the wifi password.  Your mileage may vary of course, but I had to use a very low bit rate, and the day of the tournament last year, it wasn't stable enough most of the day.  If you have a dedicated alternative method for Internet like a 4G LTE jetpack, that might be a more stable option.  You could also just record locally, then upload later.  Otherwise, you'll end up with a bunch of smaller video files with gaps in between.

    Best of luck everyone!

Thanks for the heads up!   @trojan1979    I used a hot spot at Tundra bowl and it worked a lot better.   Don't have the ability to do that this year.  =(    I'm going to stop by Boomers today and check it out.    If someone has the ability to setup a hot spot on their phone it would probably work a lot better.   Uses a lot of data though.   But when it's for Tecmo it's all worth it, right?    If anyone has that ability hit me up!

  4. Yeah I thought so too.   Tried a different NES and different cables.  When you hit reset like 3x's on the NES it will go away for a few mins but then comes right back and never goes away until the next resets.  Seems like something with the actual adaptor.   When I add the cable splitter to a TV it's not on the TV just the laptop capture screen.   Very odd.

  5. Any more recommendations on USB capture devices?    The one  I bought has a green line down the middle that won't go away.  Does it on multiple NES systems.    Support said they don't know what it is.   Looking to buy one that works right.

USB Capture with free green line down the middle.

I see this one recommended but is now over $50 and takes 2-4 weeks shipping.  Could buy a used one If I had too.

  6. This works!   Thanks for the rom!   Now when I play flash80 maybe he'll stop wining about how I got the better team.    Ha!      Although, having away and home uniforms would make it much better to play against someone.   Either way this is good stuff!  Thanks again.

  7. Congratulations Rico!   We're surprised you won too!    j/k   You played well and deserve it.   Thanks to Jon for taking time to coordinate the event.   Also a special thanks to his wife and family for supporting a game we still love even though they don't always understand our Tecmo craze.    A shout out too to all those that traveled to support it as well including GBLAN!   Looking forward to the next one.   The first one is the hardest and they only get easier, right?    At least that's the story were sticking too.

An emulator's CPU impact and a capture card's impact are not going to be nearly the same. If your emu is choppy, this is most certainly a CPU issue.

I think some of the lag was cuz I was playing the game online while trying to stream.  Probably a recipe for disaster without a faster connection.  To do a better test I'll have to setup the capture card and try it again.  Trial and error!  Thanks again for the help!

There are two MAJOR components when it comes to streaming, both of which cause disconnects. Your computer's CPU and the internet connection. Secondary is the graphics card.

If the CPU can't handle everything on screen (cameras, capture, etc) it will stutter and cut out. You have to meticulously monitor your frames and set your FPS according to that. This is job #1. Once you are settled on a good FPS you move on to your connection. In most cases you won't know the actual speed until you get to the venue. If you know you are using Wifi it is safe to assume that you are going to be getting less than 1mbps upload, which is FARRR from ideal. You'll need to either lower your FPS again to compensate for this or start to remove on-screen items.

Another thing to consider is screen resolution. NES output is 240p so you can lower your canvas resolution substantially and get away with a higher quality stream at a lower FPS.

A lot of words to say that this is not a science and requires tons and tons of testing and retesting. My audio sync still isn't great and I've been doing this for years. Go figure.

Thanks for the tips!   I did some testing last night and the CPU utilization was low so I think that's ok.  I set the camera's FPS to 15 which is pretty low.   I was mainly messing with the bitrate and it seemed like the max I could do was 700.  Folks said the camera looked fine but the game was a bit choppy.  Watchable but not great.

Brutopia's fps rate was ~56 so was getting some lag for sure.   Will do more testing.

Audio seems to be my biggest issue to.  Get a screeching noise in background.  Think it's reverb from all the video games going at once.  (this was NHL 95 on gens streaming)

Screeching noises sounds like feedback from the microphone.   Speakers close to the microphone?   Just a guess.....

  11. What internet speeds have folks been successful with hosting live events via Twitch?    I have 1MB upload speed at home and it worked well once I turned the bitrate to around 1000.  Once we get more views I'm assuming that will affect the hosting server and not our local site. Folks online recommend much higher upload speeds however I don't think Tecmo needs HD quality.   Any input would be appreciated.
