  1. As the emcee of this year's tournament with no director responsibilities, I promise to be the same asshole to people complaining about the new coin flip rules as I was to the people complaining about the old coin toss rules. In my ceremonial role, consistency is paramount.

gats wants to lose the tosses because he cant choose his own but from the not ideal subset otherwise hed rather win it vs someone like regulator. To be clear I'm fine with the format. If I had great tapping my preferences would be different but as it stands 1. Vs an unknown I'd rather lose coin toss and get to choose team since its more likely their matchup selelection will have one team that I feel is clearly better. One minor caveat is the point differential as it can be less likely to rack up a big differential in certain matchups. 2. Vs a ~ even tapper I'd mostly indifferent as I'd feel confident using any team and thus would again rather aim to choose the slightly better team 3. Vs a great tapper or imbalanced style player I 100% want to win the match to a avoid matchups where tapping has more impact or matchups that are not the players strength. So for me id usually rather lose the toss early in the tourney and more often win it late.

I think this is a great idea. I think we should stream the coin toss process as well. Loser also has to take their shirt off in shame.

How about we look back last year when Tecmo Madison was going to end. Then fast forward to now, remember its back and stop complaining about a rule change, This whole thing has been thought out and compromised. I would be willing to bet that this rule would have changed regardless of who was running the tournament.

  5. Rik and I played these playoffs, game by game, in TSB. The Oilers subbed for the Texans. And the Falcons won the Super Bowl over the Chiefs.

  6. So here's the idea. You have N guys playing, where (N-1) divides 28 evenly. So this could be played with 2, 3, 5, 8, 15, or 29 guys. (Any number would work, but this ensures a balanced schedule). Each TSB28 game has 28 rounds of Tecmo games (potentially). Every round you play one game. Player 1 chooses his team first, then player 2 chooses his team. You can be each team only once. A win gets you 1 point, a tie gets you 0.5 points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the 28 games is the winner. The game can also end when one player has first place locked up. For example, in a 2-player game, the first person to 14.5 points wins (but this wouldn't be the case with more people). If P2 can choose a team different than whoever P1 chose then he must. If he cannot, then the game is automatically a draw (this could only happen in the 28th round). So it's simple, games could be uploaded to TPC, and all you'd need is a shared Google Doc to keep track of points and who has chosen which teams. Some interesting things about this setup are... 1. The dynamic of team choosing would be new and some out-of-the-box matchups would get played. 2. The best player wouldn't necessarily be favored, since his opponents would try and give themselves a leg up (team advantage) when they're P2. Conversely, a weaker player would play more games with a better team and would receive sort of a built-in handicap. But it's dynamic, because if that player starts to lead in the standings the other players would start policing him. 3. Games could be immediately conceded to save time; say I'm playing somebody and he takes SF as P1, I could, say, take IND and concede if I felt like not burning one of my good squads in an attempt to beat SF. Of course it would take some commitment from the players, but that goes with anything beyond basic TPC. You could also choose a subset of the 28 teams for a shorter game. Anyone interested in trying this out let me know and I'll try and organize it!

Bingo. I won 2 coin flips at Tundra out of 7?8? First one I took Ones' advice and deferred. Second was late in the tourney. I'd prefer to have my choice of team all day every day. Twice on Sundays.

What if we do a best of 7 coin flip, then play paper/rock/scissors best of 5? The winner of the coin flip series chooses their controller, the winner of flip #4 chooses the matchup, and the winner of P/R/S series chooses who sits in what chair and whether the TV is on mute or not (although its not said, criss-crossing controllers in Tecmo is a huge mind fuck advantage). Then the winner of the P/R/S first throw chooses the team. This to me seems cleaner. Thanks for the consideration in advance Dave.

  9. I call this one quite a bit, because I think most players will take PIT here, leaving me with PHX, who I'd prefer. But this is pretty even. Hard to score on either front, but I like the offensive advantage at RB a bit more than I like the D. But its first to 17. PS You have to answer my DET questions now.

Great topic.. i def wanna win the coin toss vs regulator and a few others but yes i definitely rather lose the coin toss 85% under the old laws. But with the new laws i wanna win it 100% lol... Vs reg if i lose the toss my chances to win are very low but if i win it then i say i have a 45% chance..

  12. Fascinating, I bank my Midwest Tecmo IX win on being able to call the last 5 matchups against opponents I know very well. It gave me an edge making sure I could utilize my skillset against theirs. The number one reason for anyone not being elite... is rooming with that sandbagging bastard @segathonsov!!! Step up your prep.

  14. Just to wrap up, thanks everyone for coming out. It was a lot of fun. I am definitely down to do it again next year. I absolutely love coming down to Portland. Congrats to Invader, Gripsmoke, and MAD MANYO for their respective finishes, as well as SuperSonics for winning the Outstanding Rookie Award and '91 Huskies for winning the consolation. Special thanks for RPW44, xavalepdx. SuperSonics, and LT56 for coming out to their first major Tecmo Tournament. I know its tough doing battle with us vets, but I hope you were inspired to come back harder next time or in the case of SuperSonics, simply just not have QB Browns eat a wiener... haha. GG man. You guys all brought tons to the table. Hope to see you guys, all the vets who brought their typical ruckus, and all the other NW players who couldn't make it out this time real soon. Manyo, you are in charge of the spring and summer and then I'm swoopin back in for PAC RIM SEPT 2. SAVE THE DATE.

Against an elite level player I'd more often prefer to call the matchup. Against a clearly inferior player I'd more often prefer to choose the team.
