    Coin Toss Selection

For sake of clarity (Knobbe or mods, please move to a better location so this doesn't completely run a tournament thread off the rails) here is the basics of the Madison rule change rationale: The tournament organizers and committee members have fielded two very different complaints/comments/opinions etc before, during, and after the tournament. They are: 1. I hate choosing a matchup, that's the worst part 2. I hate not being P1 This lead to the bizarre situation in the last 3 tournaments where people would rather lose the toss than win it. Losing the toss would allow a player to have P1 *and* avoid choosing a matchup - the best of all worlds (to a 50%+1 degree of participants). To take the comparison from above, a person would be able to "lose" every coin toss and still feel like that came out ahead by playing P1 and not choosing a matchup, while a person would be able to "win" every coin toss, go 0-2 and never pick up P1. After discussions with people way, way, way smarter than the committee, we decided that the net positive opinion result - being P1 - should be coupled with the net negative result - picking a matchup - to simplify the coin toss process and not end up with some confused participants, which has also happened in past tournaments. Our thought process was coupled with the following thought: the matchup isn't the main point of the coinflip, its the P1 v P2 conundrum. 99% of people who choose a matchup tend to call an even matchup no matter what the situation - very rarely do you see something bizarre like 49ers v Cowboys or Oilers v Seahawks, most matchups are of the Raiders v Bear/Green Bay v Browns variety, evenly (ish) matched teams. Therefore, the importance of matchup to 2 players who have never seen each other (or even those who have seen each other 1000 times) is not as important psychologically as being P1. Since matchup is neutral (in most cases) the next important part of the process is choosing your preferred team. If a player - lets call him Tony O (actually, let's call him T. Orenga) - really prefers a team like the Rams and the coin toss winner chooses a Rams - Vikings matchup, Orenga would jump at the chance to be his preferred team which means he might not care which controller he has in his hands. If you rank the preference of the various things to choose in the game of Tecmo, the rankings would probably go like this: 1. P1 controller 2. Team choice 3. Matchup for the game Since P1 v P2 choice is the top "prize" for most tecmoers, we just made it the default prize for winning a 50/50 coin toss. Since the second most preferred prize is team choice, we made it the default runner up "prize" for losing the toss. Since the "winner" benefits the most and the "loser" benefits next, the third choice goes back to the winner. Now, as much as I would like to rant about symmetrical v asymmetric and zero-sum v non-zero-sum game theory, I think I've revealed enough about the rule adjustment instituted for a different tournament on a thread about a tournament a friend of ours is running.

I'm open to talking this over during the next week. If picking the teams is considered an advantage, then the process of rolling for tiers would negate this. On the flip side, I'm not looking to over-complicate things. Less complicated rules >>>> minor statistical advantages

Sort of a large blade cut here as I do not mind people giving me feedback for the tourney but I get it though because cheese and Jerry Rice guys. Maybe instead of golden showering all over each other wait for me to chime in about my own tourney. #Topical BTW, the link to Tecmo Madison was actually there to give them credit for coming up with rules, not as the goto

I keep forgetting that you were sitting at the registration table during the last 12 Madison tournaments.

  6. I recently joined a CRT collector group on Facebook, and the general consensus I've seen is that even when HDMI modded NES or Retrousb AVS via HDMI connected to high end gaming monitors with less than 1ms input lag and features like gsync, there is still a noticeable delay, albeit minimal when compared side by side to an analog powered CRT. The thing about digital is that it essentially means, information has to be processed by your display in order to render it. Even if it's lighting fast, there is still a delay created by said processing. This is why we see additional lag introduced by emulators, it's another layer of processing. I could be wrong here, but it's really the kicking game that seems to be the most obvious game play mechanic affected by all of this. Perhaps a rom hack that changed how the kickoff and punt meters were treated, such as changing the location of the arrow, or meter to be one frame behind the indicator. I know this would create a whole new challenge on deployment of all of this, but it could be worth exploring as CRT's are a dying resource. Bruddog is that even possible? Who knows what the future will bring with digital technology. For now I'm sticking with CRT's as long as I have enough of them, and can still get them.

While the above post referred only to ATL-SEA, Two of the best Roms to simulate today's DAL-G.B game with are, tecmonster [Tecmonster's Tecmo Super Bowl 2017] and tborg [Tecmo2017_rev2]. Here's an example of what I got when I first simmed the latter: TBORG reveals OT/tie; demands replay in the USA!

Can't get enough game-time action? I tell you what: GET OFFA YOUR COUCH, GO POP IN TSB 2016-17 QBV JUICED, AND GET BACK ON YOUR COUCH I've run four such SIMs - all, close / entertaining affairs - and here's the latest result: How was it won, you say? Well, on a 3rd down, time-expiring Matt Ryan/Julio 60-yd hookup. That's how. booyakasha.

  11. I've been busy with a new job, but I still tinker now and then. Prolly be March before I can give it my all. It will be here by start of preseason next year. There are major graphical bugs I have to fix. But I know where it's happening so it's just a matter of finding time again. It's gonna get finished... I Promise!!

  14. I mostly play TSB on NES but wanted to get a take from others on the Bo Jackson character. Obviously Bo Jackson is one of (if not the) best players in TSB but I was wondering if he is equally rated (speed, power, etc) in the original game (TB)? And if equally rated in the game is he equally dominant? In full disclosure I am working on a written piece about the character of "tecmo bo" and want to get all the background on any differences/similarities between the two version (TB vs. TSB). Any help is MUCH appreciated. Cheers. On a side note, can someone send me a link where I can look over the specific rating(s) of Jackson in the two games?

  15. HP has nothing to do with MAN vs MAN grapples in TSB. Bo makes the Raiders a top team, but very weak QBs and so-so defense make them not quite as elite as a few other teams. Few DBs can stop the SF passing game, and SF also has a top 5 D with Lott and Waymer. The passing attack of HOU is even more ridiculous, and Dick Johnson is better on D than anyone on the Raiders. The Giants are almost certainly better, because while they have no one great player on offense, pretty much EVERY position has an above average player. And their D has LT leading the best front 7 in the game, and a couple of good DBs. BUF and CHI are also up there. It's also the reason why PHI is not the best team in the game. QB Eagles puts them in the running, but they have little going on elsewhere.

  16. TSB Bo's not unstoppable. I am not afraid of him, within reason. Like, I can totally shut him down with PHI defense, for example. But you have to play "bend but don't break" defense, because if you get caught slipping, you might be toast. and yes, force RAI to pass with Silver Spoons.

  17. Since I play very little TSB, I have a question. Random people laud TSB Bo as this unstoppable machine, yet the top TSB players around here always have the Raiders ranked around the 5th or so best team. Tells me the best of the best aren't THAT afraid of him. How do TSB stop him? Or does Schroeder just suck that bad that they take their chances calling a decent amount of Bo's run?

  18. I'd have to say TSB Bo, but ONLY because Tecmo screwed up a bit on the original..... In the original Tecmo Bowl, a programming error causes Bo to be somewhat pedestrian compared to Payton and Dickerson. Since LA is the only team in the original with a 2 back set, LA has no top WR. As a result, the top outside LB is unblocked on Bo's run play. Where Bo feasts on a defense is when the controlled defender has a blocker coming for him and Bo is on the loose. Wilber Marshall and Carl Banks stifle him easily from that TOLB position. But if you know what you're doing, even slow TOLBs like Simon Fletcher for instance can prevent him from gaining those big 20 yard runs. I guess normally I would say Original Bo, but he's shut down pretty well with the blocking scheme issue. Probably more info than the OP wanted, but the truth shall set you free. Or in this instance, the truth shall corral Bo Jackson.

  19. Bo only has 31 HP in TSB. In the original, he's a popcorn machine AND very fast, so I give him the edge in TB.

  20. There's still a couple of layers to edit but the players will have faces on the player data screen again. This is not how the final screen will look, but just letting every one know we're still at it!
