The Kumite III will be moving from downtown Detroit, and into the suburbs - as it's just simply easier for many of us.  The tournament remains a triple elimination, random draw tournament, but we've added one component to that.  The main thing that will really be changing with the tournament format is the total number of games played.  In an attempt to speed up the tournament, and also get a few of you to hang around longer to watch the finale; Once we are down to 8 or less competitors, the tournament will be a single elimination format, with competitors previous records wiped from the slate.  The last player remaining will be declared the champion.   And just like last year, we are also planning on conducting a minimum of one additional side tournament for those knocked out prior to the top 8, which will be be single elimination competing for a prize.

To make this tournament run as smoothly as possible, we need one NES playing station per every four tournament competitors.  So as always, we need all the help we can get from small TVs, NES consoles, TSB carts, controllers, A/V cords, RF switches, power adapters, extension cords, power strips, etc.  Anything that you can help out with is so greatly appreciated, and do not forget to label your equipment!

Register with pertinent info: [email protected], and please let me know if you have any concerns or questions.  See everyone in January!

DETROIT TECMO KUMITE III:  TOURNAMENT RULES

1. Tournament Format – Every player in the tournament will play one game per round. A random draw will determine each player’s opponent for the round. A player is eliminated from the tournament when they have accumulated three losses. (NEW RULE) - However, in an attempt to speed up the tournament, and also get a few of you to hang around longer to watch the finale; Once we are down to 8 or less competitors, the tournament will be a single elimination format, with competitors previous records wiped from the slate.  The last player remaining will be declared the champion.

2. Byes - If there are an odd number of players at the start of a round, then one player will receive a bye (this will be determined through the random draw). Any player who has previously received N byes will be ineligible for another bye unless all other remaining players have also received N byes.

3. Team Selection: Each game (including who is Player 1 and who is Player 2) will be determined by a random draw at the start of each round. For each game, Player 1 will choose the matchup (i.e. the two teams). Player 2 then selects their preferred team.

4. “One Matchup Once” Rule: Players may only select a particular matchup once throughout the entire tournament. For instance, if Player 1 selects Packers/Browns, this person cannot call that exact matchup for the rest of the tournament. Player 2, however, is free to select that matchup later in the tournament.

5. Customizing Playbooks and Lineup Changes: Customizing playbooks is permissible. You may access your “change” screen (screen where you check player conditions and make substitutions) only twice per half. This helps speed up the games.

6. WR/TE at RB. Playing with a WR or TE at RB is strictly prohibited. A WR or TE is able to play in the RB2 slot, but ONLY a RB can receive direct handoffs or pitches. The only time a WR or TE can run the ball is on a reverse. Outside of this: RB, WR, and TE are interchangeable.

7. Ties: Ties are not permitted in this tournament. If a game ends in a tie after overtime, a new game will begin, and the first player to score in the new game is the winner.

8. Lurching: Lurching is strictly prohibited. If you want to rush with a DL, you must either go outside the offensive tackles or “popcorn” someone on the offensive line. You may not simply go around your blocker and dive. Note that this rule does not apply to LBs.

9. Nintendo Malfunctions: If there is an equipment failure in the first half, games will be replayed from the start. If equipment malfunctions in the 2nd half, only the second half is replayed. In that event, the scores from each half are added together to obtain a final score. If the game was uncompetitive or the equipment malfunctioned due to human error, the tourney organizers reserve the right to declare a winner without replaying any portion of the game.

10. Tournament Disputes: Eric O’Dell and Matt O’Toole are the tournament referees. They will decide all disputes unless one of them is a player in the game. If one or both is a player in the disputed game, Joe Moskwa or Chas Claus will resolve the dispute.

11. Equipment: Tournament competitors are encouraged to bring any and all equipment they are able to, including: NES, TSB cart, controllers, ac adapters, RF or RCA wires, extension cords, power strips, and most importantly small sized televisions. Please keep in mind, we may be in need of said equipment for the duration of the event. ONLY basic NES controllers are welcome, no turbo, etc. If you plan on bringing any equipment, please plan on arriving 30 minutes in advance to help set up. We thank you in advance for anything you are able to assist the tournament with!

12. Entry Fee, and Prizes: Tournament entry fee will be $20 per participant. Cash prizes for places TBD based on participants, with the winner taking home the Kumite Cup!  One participant per every 10 will earn cash a prize is a strong rule of thumb at the Kumite however.

O'Dell and I are already having planning sessions about knocking off Mort, the defending champ.  Lou has mentioned his new job and girlfriend have been distracting him from Tecmo, but I'm betting on him being there...

Just got approval from the boss.... err... I mean, my wife, everyone knows that!  :)  I'll be headed up to Northern Indiana Friday Night for some study time with the Miller boys and up to Day-twah on Saturday morning.  It's been a heck of an 18 months with NO TECMO TOURNEYS!!!!  It's time to

One of my favorite Reg posts (from the Kumite I thread):  "Want to hear some Tecmo dedication? My wife is 100% anti video games. She knows that I have wanted to buy a PS3 for some time now. Friday night we went out to eat and to deter me from Detroit and Madison trips, she says "You're going to hate me." I ask "Why?" She responds "I know you have wanted to get a PS3 for a while now, so if you skip your tecmo tournaments, I'll let you buy one. What's it going to be?" I respond without a moments hesitation "tecmo." She seethes and proceeds not to speak to me for the rest of the night. I feel no remorse and even some satisfaction. :)"

I see she's pulled the heavy artillery (baby on the way) to put the kibosh on Madison!  Glad you can still make Detroit.

Posted are the team breakdowns from last year's tournament (one game is missing and I don't want to recount to find it).

Most popular teams: DAL (15), DET (14), DEN (13).

Undefeated teams: MIA (4-0), IND (1-0, a 6-3 slobberknocker in round 5, O'Dell over Kevin Cabarello).

Best win % (min. 5 games):  PIT, GB, SF all were 4-1

Worst win % (min. 5 games): PHI, ATL both went 1-4

Craziest matchups (just like, my opinion, man):  DET/HOU, DAL/NYG, BUF/CIN, NYJ/SF, NYJ/DET

can you post any info on some nearby hotels please?

There are a ton of hotels in the vicinity of the bar, which is very close to the Palace of Auburn Hills.  This link should give you an idea of what's available.

http://www.hotels.com/search.do?resolved-location=CITY:1448817:UNKNOWN:UNKNOWN&destination-id=1448817&q-destination=Auburn%20Hills,%20Michigan,%20United%20States%20of%20America&q-localised-check-in=01/23/15&q-localised-check-out=01/25/15&q-rooms=1&q-room-0-adults=2&q-room-0-children=0&sort-order=DISTANCE_FROM_LANDMARK&sort-lid=1672067

The Pistons are out of town that weekend and I don't see any events scheduled for that weekend.  Maybe we should have held the tournament there.  Maybe if we get a bit bigger in the future...  Looks like hotels nearby can be got for as low as $55 (right now anyway).

At last a reason to visit Detroit.

I love this concept so much. It sounds like a blast. I'd want to go just for the sheer number of Bloodsport references being made.

Alas, I'll just settle for that lowly tournament in Madison and it's boring old rules.

Ahem...

Would you like to one-day trip this with us? Me, Matt and Joey plan on leaving at like 5 a.m. in order to get up there before kickoff and so that I can set up a livestream. Maybe you could meet us near I-75 so we could pick you up and cruise straight there. We will be heading back home that night after the tournament.

Sup. This is my first post in the forum EVER. I just wanted to inform the Tecmo public that on January 24th, i'll be bringing more rowdiness to the Auburn Hills area then Dennis Rodman. I plan on letting Dave Krieg deep balls loose like Vinnie "The Microwave" Johnson. I'm going to be more excited to be there than Rick Mahorn at the site of a fight breaking out.
