I look forward to playing all the guys I play online but finally get to in person, as well as the consistent Madison tourney powers, especially that hail from Wisconsin and surrounding areas. Also would LOVE play both Holzy bros and thank them heartily before trying to wax the 8 bit gridiron with their hineys.

The online geek juice will be flowing like fine wine.  It'll be awesome to hang out with all of you mugs, just a few short weeks away!

(FOR MADISON CREW)

I'm curious what the lurch ruling would be in Madison? This is a very nice play with a lot of gray area for interpretation.

Under Madison rules the first two are lurches.  The third is not.  The video I believe is right under Madison rules.  The gray area really gets gray when the DL1 or DL3 try to break up an up the middle run or other pro form run.

Is the full 256 expected to be filled?  Taking longer than I expected even with the downtime of the payment tool.  Hope the lack of hotel space and the increased cost isn't scaring people away.

256 is the maximum number of players that we can accommodate. That's not necessarily the number of guys we expect to play in March. We expect that number to fall somewhere between last year's number (224) and the maximum. Once we update our numbers, we will have 204 confirmed/paid as of today, with a month and a half remaining before the tournament. So this is the least of our concerns at the moment.

A few things:

1) Brian R (ChaosRison) and I will be in Madison on Friday night and are looking forward to getting some pickup games in. We're staying at my buddy's place on the east side, which is about 5 minutes from that Super 8 on Hayes Road that a bunch of people are staying at. Hope we can join for the pre-tourney tourney Friday night.

2) I'm still dying for some of the historical stats from Madison Tecmo as far as how often certain teams are selected, team winning %, etc.

3) In prep for the tourney, I just spent my Friday night watching The Cannonball Run for the first time.... (Controversial statement ahead)... Who's going to give me 90 minutes of my life back?

cmon man, at least 30 of those minutes were gratuitous cleavage shots (80's soft porn)... you really want those back?

Now that sonofpatbeach put together a nice win in Green Bay, he's now walking into Madison like the first lady:

I'm obviously Spoelstra in this image. Still trying to figure out who Ray Allen, Dwyane Wade, and LeBron are in this situation...

Umm....no. Winning a tourney of ~30 guys, while fun and a great way to get some practice, in no way makes me confident about making the Elite 8 in Madison. Too many great players. I'd be happy duplicating last year's Sweet 16 appearance before heading to the Plaza for some beers/pocket pizza with Owen Good.

So gentlemen, if there's ONE player you'd like to face in play at Madison, who would it be and why?

id like to avenge losses to "sonofpatbeach" (I wanted to puke in my mouth when qb bills fumbled and gave him an easy scoop and score..I got outcoached in the game..., "artvandely" (got outplayed in the game) and of course id love beat mort (lousy brian blades c.c.). Id pick mort if it just one . Edited by red98sethuthut

TCB is truly a bad movie, which is amazing considering it has an all-star cast (Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Sammy Davis, Jr., Farrah Fawcett, Dean Martin) and a fabulous premise (who can drive across the country fastest). Great idea, poor execution. Like the way Orenga plays Tecmo. The PG rating is partially to blame. It doesn't even crack my list of Top 5 Burt Reynolds movies: Deliverence, Boogie Nights, Smokey and the Bandit (inspiration for Tecmo V: Ickey and the Boomdog), Gator, White Lightning.

We hope you find The Gannonball Run more enjoyable than The Cannonball Run.

I figured I'd get some kind of grief for the first lady reference.

What is Plaza Pocket Pizza?

Last year, my wife bought an entire pizza at an establishment near the Plaza, but they wouldn't let us bring the pizza in. So we ate half of it out in the cold, and I stuffed a few pieces in my jacket pocket. I completely forgot about the pizza, until an hour or so later, when Owen Good said "damn, I'm hungry." At which point I reached into my jacket pocket, took out a piece of pizza, and said "Enjoy!"

(FOR MADISON CREW)

I'm curious what the lurch ruling would be in Madison? This is a very nice play with a lot of gray area for interpretation.

http://youtu.be/YeGu2N-YirE

This seems to come up every year in advance of the tournament. One thing we want to make clear is that, for the purposes of our tournament, we need to define a "lurch" more broadly than in a typical game of Tecmo because we can't be trying to provide interpretations on the spot in the ~450 games that take place at our tournament.

For that reason, anything that looks or feels remotely close to a lurch will be classified as a lurch. Keeping that in mind, the third scenario in your video is prohibited by our rules: the defender neither went around the tackles, nor did he engage himself with/"popcorn" an offensive lineman.

In the 9 years of our tournament, I believe we've needed to rule on a lurch ONCE. This is because we've kept the interpretation broad, and guys have (wisely) avoided the impulse to "outsmart the rules" and try things like this. And when a guy does lurch, oftentimes it's a novice who doesn't know he's breaking the rule, and someone (either an opponent or someone watching the game) just telling him "hey, that's not cool" after he does it once takes care of things. We thank those of you who have helped the tournament police itself over the years by doing this.

If a guy does something like this to you in the tournament, you have two options: (1) Notify him that it's a lurch, and he can't do that again, or (2) Put your controller down, and find someone from the TecmoMadison team. We will make rulings on a case-by-case basis, and hopefully we won't be required to make a ruling at all. What we will not do is make rulings after the game: if a guy does it to you multiple times in a game, it's your responsibility to inform him/us as it's happening.

Fair warning: we will not be generous to guys who try to skirt either the letter or the spirit of the rule, or take advantage of a novice who doesn't realize that what you're doing is prohibited. Just because your opponent doesn't notice it doesn't mean that spectators won't notice it.

Who is coming from North of Madison?  I'd like to get a ride i'm in Oshkosh.  How much do the cheapest hotels end up running you?  I have the choice of driving myself but then staying sober and driving home or getting a hotel.  Also my place in Oshkosh would be free to stay at before or after the tournament for anyone willing to give me a ride.

Sometimes, at the darkest of moments, is when you need the help of the Gods the most.  The Tecmo Gods.  You know that it is a longshot, but you pray anyway.  You give sacrifice.  The momentum is slow at first....a cancelled meeting, a postponed project deadline....then it begins picking up....soon you realize it IS the Gods at work---and you understand the Tecmo Gods have something in store for you.  Something great.  A meeting/trip is cancelled.  A gift is given, and well received.

And, before you know it, the Tecmo Gods have fulfilled your fantasies.  I thank the God Council--Steve Atwater, Tim McDonald, and David Fulcher.  You have moved mountains larger than Reggie White in excellent.  You have obliterated foes like an excellent Craig Heyward vs. the Colts.  I won't let you down.  I cannot.

See you March 8.   #livechicken   #jobu

Announcement

After years of discussion, we are officially implementing "Madison Madness" this year. Those interested in predicting the participants for the Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, and Championship can, for a small fee, enter a competition to determine the best Tecmo prognosticator. Real-time results/standings will be made available after each round so that each contestant knows where he stands. This will undoubtedly create rooting interests, particularly in games played in those last couple rounds. Payout will depend on number of contestants.

More information will be posted as the tournament approaches, but there will probably be only a small window in which to submit your predictions electronically, likely Wed (3/5) to Fri (3/7). We can't take predictions any sooner, as the tournament field may change, and we can't take them any later because otherwise it'll be too much work for us on tournament day.
