While surely we are all preparing for our Super Bowl parties tomorrow, there is another Super Bowl just around the corner.  The Detroit Tecmo Kumite 2, is just one week away!  The tournament will take place at Bookies Bar & Grille, 2208 Cass Ave, Detroit at 9:30 AM, next Saturday, 2/8/14!

If you haven't been a part of any of our prior tournaments, or any others throughout the country, they are just an absolute blast.  There are some really great dudes that play this game, and the level of enjoyment and camaraderie is second to none.  This obviously is a triple elimination, random draw tournament.  To encourage some of those not fortunate enough to advance deep into the tournament, we have a little something extra for you!

* The first 16 individuals knocked out of the tournament, will compete in a single elimination bracket, and we will crown an eventual champion.  The winner of this losers bracket will earn their $20 prize money back.

* We also have a contest that EVERYONE will be participating in throughout the entire day.  The contest will be announced the morning of the tournament, and there will be a prize granted to the winner of this contest as well!

TOURNAMENT CHECK-IN

Please arrive by 9:30 AM to pay your entry, and check-in for the tournament.  If you are bringing any equipment, please arrive by 9:15 AM to help set up.  The tournament festivities will kickoff at 10:00 AM.  Please be sure to go over the tournament rules:

We may not have time to go over the rules the morning of the tournament.  Please email if you have any questions whatsoever.  The rules link is above.

EQUIPMENT

There are currently 32 participants signed up for the tournament!  To make the tournament run smoothly, and as timely as possible, we need as many people chipping in with equipment as we can possibly get.  As of now, I think we are going to be ok on the NES consoles, and TSB carts, but we definitely still need some small TVs!  If you are able to bring one, please do so!  Anything from 19'-27' I presume would be fine.

PARKING

Bookies Bar & Grill is located at 2208 Cass Ave, Detroit.  It is just about 3 blocks WEST of the Fox Theater and Comerica Park.  There are a handful of parking options nearby.  Many streets offer free 2 hour parking.  These streets include: Cass Ave, Elizabeth (the most spots), Columbia, and Grand River Ave. to name a few.  There are also a handful of paid lots nearby as well, on Elizabeth, the Fox garage on Columbia, and another garage on Elizabeth near the Fillmore Theater (Woodward Ave).  I suggest the free 2 hour parking spots on any number of those streets.

The World Series of Tecmo Super Bowl tournaments will be taking place in just 5 short weeks, in Madison, WI on 3/8/14, with over 200 participants!  This will be the 10th tournament the Holzbauer Brothers will be hosting.  They do such a great job, and it is surely a spectacle to be taken in.  Visit their site: www.tecmomadison.com and tell them we sent yah!

If you aren't fortunate enough to make it to Detroit for the Kumite II tomorrow, you can catch the live feed on twitch.tv

twitch.tv/mort1237

Action begins at 10 AM EST!

Due to the random nature of the way this tournament works, there should be high quality match-ups each round.  We will do our best to feature games that will be interesting to the online community.

I'll be watching in the afternoon once I get back from a bowling tournament I volunteered for in the morning.  Sucks donkey balls I can't go, but that's the way it is sometimes.  Just don't draw Reg vs. Ones for the first matchup like you did last year for Reg vs. Me... dick!  ;)

What a day.  Attached is the spreadsheet that has all the games with teams and scores.  The first player listed chose the matchup and the second player got to select the team.

Final Standings

1. Mort (Francis Buennagel) (1 loss)

2. toolie (Matt O'Toole)

3. Ones11fahzu (Matt Miller)

4. Joe Moskwa

4. tecmopsycho (Derek Ruble)

4. Regulator (Kyle Miller)

When it got down to Mort and me he had no losses and I had one (to Matt Miller earlier in the day).  I won our first game in a "Madison VI Redemption" NO/JETS game.  I scored with under a minute to play to win 14-13.  Our second game was also 14-13, but this time I (CHI) scored late just to make things look better, as Mort (KC) won pretty comfortably.  The last game was classic Mort pulling a rabbit out of his hat.  I had a 20-7 lead thanks in part to a fumble.  Mort scored with maybe 3:00 to play.  I faced a 4th and 1 with about 1:30 to play and I went for it.  I called a pass, Mort brought pressure, Ellard was wide open, and Everett overthrew him.  Wilson connects with Anthony Carter on a CC with time left only for the kickoff.  21-20.  Great game, and a great finish to a long day.

In the consolation bracket, Ryan Stewart beat Kevin Cabarello in the finals, but I don't know the details of that one.

Many thanks to O'Dell who carried most of the weight in getting this set up, to Megan who was there all day and managed the spreadsheet, and to Chas Claus and Joe Moskwa for their help in making things run smoothly.

Repeating a little of what O'Toole said, but, here is a brief recap.

Francis Buennagel holds off Matthew O'Toole to win the Kumite II title, 21-20, Vikings over Rams. The two played 3 straight, 1 pt. games. Mort came into finale w/O'Toole not having lost all day.  O'Toole got him in one of the contests, but Mort takes two of three to win it!  In addition to taking home the Kumite II trophy, Mort also won a Barry Sanders 1990 Starting Lineup, for having the highest rush total with the aforementioned Sanders.

The first 16 players out of the tournament, had a second crack at redemption.  Ryan Stewart took down Kevin Cabarello in the "Not so terrible" losers bracket.  Details are a bit foggy there ; )

The Kumite II ended up with 34 total competitors, and was just such an awesome time.  There were such great games all day long!

A tremendous thank you to Chas Clause, Matt O'Toole, and my lovely wife Megan for all of their contributions throughout the entire day.  We sincerely could not have done it without you!  A not so big thank you to Michigan craft beers in 32 ounce Mason jars.

What a classic tourney ran very well full of great players and ppl, feel like i can shed some light on the 2 biggest losers of the day!

Kevin called matchup

Ryan11p Chiefs 13

Kevin      Bears 10

Chiefs get the ball and drive down couple good runs but a big pass was the one that put the Chiefs in scoring position great D by Kevin hold Chiefs to a fg 3-0 Chiefs

Bears take over long drive mainly running put Bears in fg range and the fg is blocked by DT.

Chiefs take over and move slowly but a big grab by paige is good for a td 10-0 Chiefs

Bears take over short time but are able to move down and a big run by Neal right before the half puts Bears on the board 10-7 Chiefs at half

Chiefs get ball at half and go on another grinding drive but are held on 4th and 2 just outside fg range

Bears get the ball good field pos but are held to the fg 10-10 almost 4th qtr

Chiefs take over and and go on a drive that literally leaves about 12 seconds on the clock Chiefs take the fg and honestly if i didn't have Lowry wouldn't have made it 13-10 Chiefs

Bears get the KOR but thats it

GG
