Waterloo, IA - 12/14/13 - Tomczak Bowl VI

Mark it on your calendar if you haven't yet folks.  Saturday, December 14, 2013.  The premier Tecmo Super Bowl tournament of Waterloo, Iowa returns.  Tomczak Bowl VI.

Last year marked the first time we opened it up to the masses and the response was tremendous.  52 players hailing from numerous states ventured to Spicoli's Bar & Grill in Waterloo for what was a spectacular display of raw Tecmo prowess.  In the end Luke C. proved victorious and took home what most have called the greatest Tecmo trophy ever assembled.

In 2013, the competition should be even more fierce.  Or is it fiercer?  More fiercer? Whatever, it should be fucking insane!

64 man double elimination mayhem is what's in store this year for a solid cash prize PLUS a newly crafted trophy that will be even greater than last year's.

Aside from great Tecmo play and a sweet trophy, Tomczak Bowl VI will once again have raffle prizes, although nothing may top the sweet VHS copy of SI's Year in Sports video from 1991 we gave away last year.  We'll also probably have some sort of drink special again too.  Last year every participant got two free drink tokens which went even further when Happy Hour kicked in and everything was 2 for 1.  I believe our group drank them dry of their Stone IPA.  Well done gentlemen!

I know December seems ages away still but I wanted to get this posted now so folks can start making plans in their calendar.  This will give you a valid excuse to get out of that shitty Christmas party you don't want to go to!

I'm incredibly pumped for this year.  This could become a solid warmup event before the Big Dance in Madison only a few months later.

Less than a week and we already have 19 registrants.

The latest to sign up are the Burkhardt brothers (8-Bit, adversity, gridiron) who proved to be tough competitors.  Andy B. (adversity) wound up placing 3rd, beating Travis R. (moulds33).

Had a guy from New York tell me he was trying to get things lined up, any hotels that are cheap and safe I could recommend to him??

Yeah I got a message from him too.  I sent him some info.

It probably would be faster to list the 1-2 hotels that's aren't safe if that even exists.  One of the pros of living in the midwest.

Yeah Waterloo has some sketchy parts.  For hotels I'd say either go for the ones near the mall along LaPorte Rd, or the casino hotel, or go over to Cedar Falls and pick one of the hotels off Highway 58.  I'd probably avoid anything in downtown Waterloo.

We're trucking right along here.  We now have 28 registrants.  I just added links on the List of Registrants page.  If you are listed on Tecmo Madison's competitor database I have linked you to your page of results there.  This will let folks see how you fared in past tourneys and gauge their competition.

If you find an error with one of the links let me know.

Also I have updated the Team Tiers for 2013.  For the first time in Tomczak history we're including all 28 teams.  We've dropped the Raiders from Tier 1 to Tier 2 and now have 6 teams each in Tiers 2 through 5.  We will still determine the tier for each match using a die.  But taking a page from the Madison rules we will now make the winner of the coin toss pick both teams from the tier.  Loser would then get first pick of the two selected teams.

I thought about this and I'm gonna go ahead and say yes to calling the same matchups twice.  Only because with the tiers you're limited on the number of combinations you can pick anyway.  If you somehow roll Tier 1 for the third time and have had to pick teams all three times you really start hamstringing yourself on options.  Also I'm not gonna have the manpower to really keep tabs on who's picked what each time anyway.
