Tecmo Bowl Kickoff *Updated*

Alright guys, so im new to the forum, but have been playing Tecmo Bowl for as long as it has been in existence. Like you guys i LOVE this game.

so, for the upcoming season i have been working on updating the rosters, numbers, skin colors and jerseys.

Also since i have a flashcard with cheats, so i have a way to set player ratings at whatever i want. ( playing with the super Colts is hilarious.... first time ive ever won 201-0 8) ) Im currently waiting for the Madden ratings to come out so i can use that as a standard. Once i am finished (should be by preseason) im going to upload the .sav file so anyone else you using flashcards can have a completely updated Tecmo Bowl in the palm of your hands.

I hope there is still a community out there for this game as i will be back to update what im doing as frequently as possible. So without further ado, here is update #1:

- All Jerseys/team names are finished. Im pretty proud of how close i got. Although you have to make sacrifices to get it right in game, they really only affect the cut scenes. I like the addition of the jersey styles... that helped with teams like the titans and bengals.

Side Note: The Bucs and 49ers jerseys are almost identical with the color options that are given, so I gave the Bucs their throwback orange dreamsicle jerseys. Unrelated i gave the chargers their powder blues, cause those are some awesome unis.

-The rosters are about 30% done, it will be hard to finish them completely until training camp.

finished just the Dolphins early roster last night.

just wanted to let you guys know after all the ratings are altered this game will play much faster and hit a lot closer to home to the snes version. The teams already look a lot better and i just played a Bills vs Dolphins game and with the correct rosters it feels better to play. I really think this will have a great outcome.

The game really does play good with decent ratings. I don't know why they screwed the ratings and stats up.

They really made the abilities unreadable on Throwback as well.

ill be making all the changes to the depth charts when preseason rolls around. They have made it easy to shift people around in this game, so even if the charts are a way you dont like them you can shift them yourselves.

on a separate note... just finished the early rosters for the Jets and Pats.

The AFC East is now complete :D

Nice work. I been wanting to buy this game for a while to play on my old DS. When I do get that chance, I will make sure to check your stuff out

just a heads up... if you want to play my file you need to get a flashcard. Its a card that basically overrides the firmware of your DS. I suggest Acekard 2i. They support the card continually with new updates and it now has 3DS functionality. This is especially awesome because it allows you to do things you could never do before on your DS, like play homebrew games and put applications on it. You also get all of your games for free (you can download torrents or go through websites like filestube.com). If you get a high capacity micro SD card (which is inserted into the flashcard), for example an 8 GB one, you can store something like 50-60 games on your fashcard depending on the size of the game (the size of games range anywhere from 16mb to 256mb... there are only a few rare games that are 512mb )

heres a link to the Acekard website. http://www.acekard.com/

heres a link to where you can buy it. http://shoptemp.net/...Acekard-2i.html

Trust me it is welllll worth the money you save in buying games.

*EDIT* So i decided to throw in a short tutorial on how to set up your flashcards for anyone who doesnt know or understand. ill also explain how to get my (future) .sav file on your cards so you can play it!

step 1 - Buy the Card of your choice. If you check out the second link above, you will see there are a ton of cards there to chose from. I recommend reading the reviews to learn which card will work best for you.

step 2 - Buy a MicroSD card. I suggest getting a brand you trust and 'splurging' on a high capacity (4GB-32GB) card. If you are buying it for your old DS a 4GB card is big enough. If you also plan to use it on your 3DS you might want to look in the 16 GB range.

*NOTE* for the rest of the tutorial ill be using an the Acekard 2i as my example.

step 3 - Download the Firmware. For the Acekard 2i go here: http://www.acekard.com/download.php and click on the link that looks like this Download AKAIO 1.8.9 <--- this link works btw. (for any other card, visit that cards webpage. There should be a firmware download available)

step 4 - unzip the firmware file. Using a program like 7zip, which is a free download that can be downloaded here: http://www.7-zip.org/download.html , right click on the file and unzip the contents to any location you see fit.

step 5 - Load the firmware on to the MicroSD card. After unzipping you should see 4 files, two folders labeled 'Games' and '__aio' and two files labeled 'ak2ifw_update_14_DSL.nds' and 'akmenu4.nds'. Insert your MicroSD card into your computer and open up its folder. It should be blank. If it is not, format it. Drag and drop all 4 files onto your MicroSD card.

step 6 - Download games. download games from torrent sites like piratebay.org or isohunt.com. you can also find them on sites like filestube.com . They should be in .nds format. so if you download mariokart for instance it will read something like 'mariokart.nds'. just a reminder, the file name can be anything, it does not have to be the name of the game. *sidenote* when downloading from torrent sites, most games are packed into zipped files... just unzip them as you did the firmware file and the .nds file will be extracted.

step 7 - Put the games on the MicroSD card. Drag and drop your .nds files into your 'Games' folder.

step 8 - insert the MicroSD card into your Acekard 2i. The fourth picture here shows the slot on the card in which you insert the MicroSD card http://www.aclickbuy...86-thickbox.jpg . It should 'click' into place. then insert it into your DS turn it on. where your games would usually start from on your DS main screen it will read 'Acekard 2i'. Press on that and it will load your card. press on the SD card option and you will see your .nds files as little game icons. Soooo.... GET TO GAMING!

Thats it! enjoy

For anyone that wants to upload my .sav file when it is ready, this Part is for you

step 9 - Download the .sav file. In order to use my .sav when i upload it to the site, you will download it and save it anywhere on your computer.

Step 10 - Insert the MicroSD card and open up your 'Games' folder. Drag and drop my .save file into your 'Games' folder. When you load games on your flashcard it will automatically create a .sav file of the same name as your .nds file in your 'Games' folder. Rename my .sav file to have the same name as your game. so if your file is called 'TBK.nds' and my file is called 'omabada13rosters.sav' just rename 'ombada13rosters.sav' to 'TBK.sav'

step 11 - Pop the MicroSD card back into your Acekard 2i and insert it into your DS. Turn on the DS, load the Acekard 2i and start tecmobowl: kickoff. Once in the game you will see all my updated rosters and ratings.

Enjoy :)

Refer back here when the file is complete.

I finished the Ravens and Bengals today.

Note: Ed Dickerson is now Ed Dikerson. The language filter on the game wont let me put his name in properly.

If Im not mistaken, isn't there a hack to bypass the name filter?

There might be on the snes/nes/sega versions, but i dont have any cheats to do that on the DS. If you know how or know of a cheat pack i can load onto my card with that feature, it would be greatly appreciated.

Alright, The AFC North is complete!

Sorry its taking so long. either way i cant finish it until the all the Madden ratings come out, and i likely wont be releasing it until mid-to late preseason to make sure the depth charts are as close as possible.

A couple more side notes.

- With teams that feature FB's i have them in the second RB position. Teams that feature two backs will not have a starting FB.

- The Browns return specialist (J.Cribbs) is one spot higher on the depth chart at WR so i could include him in the game. I decided he was more important to return kicks than Browns Rookie/Back-up WR Travis Benjamin.

- Big Bens name is too long for the editor. i took out a bunch of vowels, but it should sound the same if you read it out loud

- Players like Mendenhall and James Harrison are on the PUP list. I dont know if they are coming back this season or not, so i included them as back-ups. I figure they are too important to keep out of the game all together.

- Mike Wallace is a RFA, he is starting for the Steelers in the game now, but if it changes in real life, ill make the adjustment.

- For those of you who hate the new music, i found out that you can unlock the old school music by winning the tecmo bowl, so im working on that too. (breezing through with SUPER Colts haha ;) ) there are a couple of other unlockables i will attain that will be included in the .sav file.

If your still following this, Thanks!

nice work man.

thanks! im glad there are some people following this.

BTW guys i also would like to point out that there are some pretty stable DS Emulators for PC out there. So if anyone has interest and doesnt have a flash card or a DS Check out google, torrent sites and other download locations.

FINISHED The AFC SOUTH!! Im starting to roll a little faster on the rosters, now that the Madden ratings are coming out (none of the ratings have been adjusted yet). I should have the AFC complete soon.

Once i get all the team rosters finished, i might load an early version of the .sav file to show you guys the discrepancy between a normal rated team and a team with full stats and how that will impact the end result. If i do this i will expect feedback on the rosters and Jerseys. If you guys want a pre rated version let me know.

could i play this on my wii

unfortunately, no. But you can download a DS emulator here: http://www.ndsemulator.com/

I wanted to let you guys know that i have started changing ratings on AFC QB's (the ones who belong to rosters ive finished) There are 8 QB stats in this game... I list them and how i used the Madden stats to make it work.

Run Speed - Direct copy from Madden stats

Rush Power - Trucking+Toughness+Strength divided by 3

Max Speed - Direct copy of Acceleration from Madden stats

Hit Power - Direct copy from Madden stats

Pass Speed - Direct copy from Madden stats

Pass Control - Throw Accuracy Short+Throw Accuracy Medium+Throw Accuracy Long divided by 3

Pass Accuracy - Direct copy from Madden stats.

Avoid Rush - Elusiveness+Awareness+Agility divided by 3

Ive completed the Pats, Steelers, Texans and Broncos QB's and ive got to say Brady feels like brady, same with the rest. They are a little too good at running out of the backfield, but im going to wait until i have the ratings for defensive players to see how much it will alter that.

The AFC preseason rosters are FINISHED!! Finally!

it takes a long time to do them, about 35-45 minutes per team and even longer when im multitasking, but i really want to get deeper into the ratings so im trying to knock out a division a day. The Full QB and RB Madden ratings have been released, so here is my to do list, organized by priority.

- Start and Finish the NFC rosters. Some players are done, but the numbers and skin colors still need to be fixed.

- Continue working on QB stats. only have about 6 teams QB's rated so far.

- Formulate RB stats.

- Work on RB stats, while waiting for more ratings to release.

- Beat Tecmo Bowl Kickoff season, while going undefeated and winning the Tecmo Bowl. This will unlock 'Tecmo Joe', the classic Tecmo Bowl music and give me Special Skill points to use.

*SIDE NOTE* The sp. skill points are for things like 'rocket pass' and 'super juke.' I want to make sure i get the players characteristics right. So P. Manning will have 'realease at the last second,' Brady will have his stats raised in the 4th, Ben Roethlisberger will have an evasive maneuver...etc.

i do have a question if anyone knows. I read that the skill points are earned through something called an L stat. If the stat is over 3000 you get 1 point and if its over 5000 you get 2. I consistently get 2 having a super team, but im not sure if those skill points are only usable for the team im playing with, or if i can spread them to every team...? if anyone has any idea or experience with this let me know.

Man ombada, I hope this all pans out for you. This is a monumental task, even using the stylus. I was going to attempt this about three months ago myself, but just couldn't motivate myself. The ratings scale they use(not being old school) scares me. I definitely would love to try this when you are done. It'll be a first, for sure. Good luck with the rest of the project. :)

thanks man, I really appreciate the enthusiasm and hope youll stick around to see this thing through.

im really excited about getting this together. When this came out even until right before i started working on this, i had tried to find an updated roster somewhere for the game but almost always came up empty... the few times i did find rosters they were half assed attempts, so i decided to do it myself. I see potential in this game given the time is put it to make it a what we all really want, an updated, portable version of one of our favorite games ever.

i dont foresee myself stopping or having any problems except for those player skills. im not quite sure how to accumulate skill points yet. Im kind of fuzzy on the whole thing, and i wont really know until i finish the season. Im really excited about unlocking the old music. This new music kind of wares thin after a while, a problem i never had with the classic music.

anyway, onto business. I completed the NFC East preseason rosters!!!

There were a bunch of name problems in this division. some were shortened or had vowels taken out depending on the length of the name and placement of the vowels. Unfortunately i couldnt get the roman numeral for 3 to fit in RG3's name box, i decided the extra F in Griffin was more important than the 'III' so i left it out.

Im going on a visa run soon and i will be taking my DS, so i fully expect to have the classic music unlocked by tuesday, at that point i will be able to check out the skill points and how that mess works.

only 3 more divisions left!!!! Then i can get back to the attributes and really test this game out. I cant wait.

ill keep ya posted!

I just remembered something... for anyone who has the game on DS without a flashcard, you can get my rosters and attributes by trading with someone who has a flashcard via wi fi. The person could take back the crappy teams, then reload my .sav to his card.

Soooooo..... I just did something super sweet. I learned how to make my own numerical codes and lets just say sp. skill points will no longer be a problem :D

Im super duper happy about this. Now i can give any skill player any characteristic because i have unlimited special skill points. I will not have to play through numerous seasons to get those attributes, so this cuts down the time it would take me to release the .sav.

WOO!

Is this the code where you hold the right and left trigger buttons at the same time? Or something like that.
