@buck You should watch Oliver Stone's documentary "The Untold History of the United States". You'll love it!

I will try to watch it.  Thanks for the tip.  Though I am not a huge fan, Stone is (was) quality.

A. It better not be one of those shows that tries to argue some garbage that Abe Lincoln was gay or whatever.

B. And if it is a communist/socialist propaganda film, beware - I have read the Communist Manifesto, so I can discern.

I think feminists should be protesting this:

For, they should realize that men are doing THEIR thing.  (Sweeping, that is.)

so, I borrowed an old VCR so I could bust out a couple of boxes of random VHS tapes that I've kept over the years....anyways, I found a tape with a JAX v IND Monday Night football game (2000 season) - and here's the random thought....

remember Dennis Miller on MNF?  lol.  not bad, in retrospect.

also, I just watched a bit of this game, but I came across a commercial advertising SEGA NFL 2K1 (featuring digital versions of Randy Moss and Duane Rudd pounding his head on locker), but remember the days when Madden had competition and we had choices?

long live TSB.

so the "march for science"....have some random thoughts....1st my quick background - I have BS and MS in electrical engineering.  I have had more math and applied physics classes than anyone I know.  I make a living being a scientist, working with radiography stuff.  I will say that I know only the basics of biology, basically cells and chemistry, and some radiation stuff.  but I have not memorized tons of shit (nomenclature) regarding biology.

anyways, here goes:

biology (science) says life begins at conception.

biology (science) says what gender a person is.

these two things are facts, scientifically verifiable and undisputed.  however, current culture says we are supposed to IGNORE SCIENCE on these points, right?  for these two things, regarding life and gender, our personal BELIEFS trump science.

however, things that science is unable to prove or verify, things like the beginnings of the universe and/or life (evolution) - and possibly its end ("climate change") are supposed to not be questioned and taken as some kind of fact.

how can a country like ours be so hypocritical regarding science?  we are supposed to ignore scientific facts on one hand, and on the other hand, we are supposed to take some leap of faith regarding scientific theories and hypothesis.

I hope this does not get too political, but I am talking about science, culture, and hypocrisy.

First of all, I have a ton of respect for the profession that you chose to go into and the amount of schooling you had to go through to get where you are now. Such a useful field, and so much math and sciences involved. I don't think that I could ever do that (nor do i have the funds to do all of that either....)

Secondly, my Ethics teacher (who is awesome, and I think that you'd like him a lot) actually took what you said a step further, and said that life simply "continues" after conception. He also gave a really good breakdown of why abortion could be considered unethical too, if you're interested in hearing about that too.

Thirdly, I guess I'm not the only person who has noticed this hypocrisy. Of course, this cuts both ways too. I do believe that climate change is happening in some form, because I believe that the evidence supports it. Of course, I'm not sure that the evidence says that people actually have anything to do with it and that there's anything that people could do to stop it. For all we know, the cause of climate change could just be natural processes. Anyways, the point is, from what I've seen, people who deny climate change usually (and this isn't directed at you) don't bring up facts to support their arguments. Rather, they talk about what they believe and such.

one tweet from the "march for science" organization (that was deleted)....

Quote

“Colonization, racism, immigration, native rights, sexism, ableism, queer-, trans-, intersex-phobia, & econ[omic] justice are scientific issues.”

errr...uhhh....what?

My imagined super villain is a moderate thinker who is driven mad by the righteous fallacies of his contentious left and right extremist counterparts, forcing him to reluctantly pursue a nihilistic and destructive path. The tragedy is in this villain having shared more in common with the average person than the ones who drove him mad.

In short, it unnerves me greatly to see men performing this sport:  Because they're doing woman's work.

Thank you for your time, and I hope you all have learned something for the day...

I won't go into details about this, because it's filled with the kind of sh*t that sends this forum into a tizzy, but I have a foreshadowing for you all: I work at a national nonprofit in New York that has been participating in a training initiative called "Anti-Oppression" training. I imagine this form of training will be coming to an institution near you soon enough, if it hasn't already, and especially if you work at a nonprofit. This kind of initiative has been making the rounds in New York for the past few years.

For a few hours every month, I get to hear how my demographic (white, straight, male) is the devil, with no concern for deliniating between the real culprit, toxic white male supremacist culture, and your everyday white male culture that by-in-largely supports equality initiatives. I recognize the need for the this kind of training ('specially for the older folks), but in my experience, the tactics that have been used come from a very aggressive activist approach that does not concern itself with the inherent sensitivities that the initiative tackles.

It's as brutal an experience to participate in this "training" as you can imagine, and it's done more to push me to a socially centrist perspective than the ardent leftist perspective that it originates from.

the only cult-ure that we need to be concerned about is the culture that beheads and murders other cultures, just based on culture alone.
